Blair Hardman brings competent and generally pleasant—if not particularly animated or memorable—delivery to this practical collection of tips and tricks. The content itself—divided into 50 minichapters—proves ready-made for the audiobook format. Listeners with short commutes can sample a tidbit or two on each leg of their journey and not find the listening disjointing, though the concluding sections devoted to the nuances of cross-cultural persuasive communication may not be quite as easily digested as the more general findings and insights. Fans of Freakonomics and The Tipping Point form a built-in audience for whom the relevance of the material will likely trump any concerns about the dry presentation. Review
""Yes!" is the single best introduction to and distillation of research and wisdom on how to change people's minds, including your own." -- Warren Bennis, Distinguished Professor of Business, University of Southern California, author of "On Becoming a Leader" and coauthor of "Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls"

"This easy-to-read summary of the social-psychological research on persuasion really does tell people how to get to 'yes.' Since we are all selling something, including ourselves, all the time, everyone can, and will be, reading this amazing book." -- Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and author of "What Were They Thinking? Unconventional Wisdom About Management"

""Yes!" is the "Freakonomics" of social psychology. This book changed my way of looking at the world. This thinking is the real deal. Don't miss out!" -- Daniel Finkelstein, Comment Editor, "The Times" (London)

"If you had a team of bright guys looking for research that you can actually use to improve your effectiveness, and they wrote it up for you with wit and style, putting it in nifty little reports of three to five pages, would that be useful? YES! This book is the trifecta: first-rate research, lively writing, and practical advice. Read it, enjoy it, use it." -- Dale Dauten, nationally syndicated King Features columnist and author of "The Gifted Boss"

Pretty good but why not read the masterpiece prequel first?
By Houman Tamaddon
If you haven't read "Influence" by Robert Cialdini then I would strongly recommend skipping this one for now and starting with that one. Cialdini's original book was one of the best psychology books I have ever read. This one is more like a sequel and like most sequels, it is not as good. In Cialdini's "Influence", he talks about 6 weapons of influence:

1) Reciprocity
2) Liking
3) Social Proof
4) Authority
5) Scarcity
6) Commitment and Consistency

This book consists of 50 short chapters where these weapons are at work. Very entertaining and insightful, but I felt that the authors violated some of their own advice by having so many chapters and not organizing them in any particular way. For example, the chapters each demonstrated one of the weapons of influence at work and perhaps the book should have been organized more formally into 6 parts with each part representing one of the weapons. I was very entertained but I am not sure if the book will have any long lasting educational value unlike "Influence".

This is a quick read and I highly recommend it AFTER you have read Cialdini's "Influence".

Dale Carnegie's Classic How to Win Friends - Turns Scientific
By James East
Much like the Dale Carnegie classic, one could consider this the scientific version with current and updated studies and field tested facts. Though many will probably purchase this book primarily due to Robert Cialdini's authorship based on his polymath classic "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion", I had to rate this book (in my view a sequel) at only 3 stars. This somewhat lower grade is mainly due to the fact that it is very hard to surpass oneself after one has published a masterpiece (no disrespect to the other co-authors). Regardless, this book still holds its own and the stories are fast moving with heavy doses (50 to be exact) of social influences, such as:

1) Social Proof Studies
2) Reciprocation Tendency
3) Authority Respecting
4) Commitment & Consistency Response
5) Scarcity Reaction, and
6) The Liking & Loving Response

If you have previously read Influence, you will like this book. If you have not, this book is a good introductory start on the subject matter of social influences. If one really likes this subject and wants to pursue it in more depth, please also refer to other fine books on the subject such as,

How We Know What Isn't So: The Fallibility of Human Reason in Everyday Life by Thomas Gilovich (very good),
Mean Markets and Lizard Brains How to Profit from the New Science of Irrationality by Terry Burnham (Hidden Gem),
The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making by Scott Plous (Classic), or
Poor Charlie's Almanack The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger by Charles T. Munger (Charlie's Insights).

Good reading and enjoy :)

Like Chocolate Cake
By Michael P. Maslanka
That's this book. Just like chocolate cake. Rich with loads of wisdom. Each chapter is only a few pages long but you get told what you need to know, clearly and without a lot of pointless throat clearing. Get the goods on social proof(people do what the majority do even if it is bad; the Petrified Forest in Arizona plastered the park with signs saying that many people removed wood pieces and that was bad only to find theft bumping upwards;change the signs to show those who take the pieces are isolated individuals and theft spirals downward); understand that you must value your contribution or its value will be lost(do a favor for a colleague and she says thanks and you say your welcome and there is zip value; tell her you are glad to do it because it helps with her business development efforts and thus she remembers, don't and its useless history to her; you value it, she won't); understand that people act consistently with their affirmative commitments, not their silent agreement( restaurants that ask people to call if they need to cxl a reserfvation don't get co-operation but those who ask a question, "Will you agree to call if you must cxl?"get loads of it); learn to take a negative and make it a positive(yes our products cost more than xyz firm, but they last longer; couple the negative with a positive that relates to or negates the negative). There is lots more. All of it good stuff. I don't care for the title but this is the way business books should be---short, to the point and useful. Sweet.

Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, by Jeff Guinn

Forget everything you think you know about Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. Previous books and films, including the brilliant 1967 movie starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, have emphasized the supposed glamour of America's most notorious criminal couple, thus contributing to ongoing mythology. The real story is completely different -- and far more fascinating.

In Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, bestselling author Jeff Guinn combines exhaustive research with surprising, newly discovered material to tell the real tale of two kids from a filthy Dallas slum who fell in love and then willingly traded their lives for a brief interlude of excitement and, more important, fame. Their timing could not have been better -- the Barrow Gang pulled its first heist in 1932 when most Americans, reeling from the Great Depression, were desperate for escapist entertainment. Thanks to newsreels, true crime magazines, and new-fangled wire services that transmitted scandalous photos of Bonnie smoking a cigar to every newspaper in the nation, the Barrow Gang members almost instantly became household names on a par with Charles Lindbergh, Jack Dempsey, and Babe Ruth. In the minds of the public, they were cool, calculating bandits who robbed banks and killed cops with equal impunity.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. Clyde and Bonnie were perhaps the most inept crooks ever, and their two-year crime spree was as much a reign of error as it was of terror. Lacking the sophistication to plot robberies of big-city banks, the Barrow Gang preyed mostly on small mom-and-pop groceries and service stations. Even at that, they often came up empty-handed and were reduced to breaking into gum machines for meal money. Both were crippled, Clyde from cutting off two of his toes while in prison and Bonnie from a terrible car crash caused by Clyde's reckless driving. Constantly on the run from the law, they lived like animals, camping out in their latest stolen car, bathing in creeks, and dining on cans of cold beans and Vienna sausages. Yet theirs was a genuine love story. Their devotion to each other was as real as their overblown reputation as criminal masterminds was not.

Go Down Together has it all -- true romance, rebellion against authority, bullets flying, cars crashing, and, in the end, a dramatic death at the hands of a celebrity lawman hired to hunt them down. Thanks in great part to surviving Barrow and Parker family members and collectors of criminal memorabilia who provided Jeff Guinn with access to never-before-published material, we finally have the real story of Bonnie and Clyde and their troubled times, delivered with cinematic sweep and unprecedented insight by a masterful storyteller.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Journalist Guinn (Our Land Before We Die), in this intensely readable account, deromanticizes two of America's most notorious outlaws (they were never... particularly competent crooks) without undermining the mystique of the Depression-era gunslingers. Clyde Barrow, a scrawny kid in poverty-stricken West Dallasin the late 1920s, stole chickens before moving on to cars, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Buck. In 1930, he met 19-year-old Bonnie Parker, and during the next four years Clyde, Bonnie and the ever-revolving members of the Barrow Gang robbed banks and armories all over the South, murdering at least seven people. Bonnie, who fancied herself a poet, wrote, Some day they'll go down together, and they did, in a Louisiana ambush led by famed ex–Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. With the brisk pacing of a novel, Guinn's richly detailed history will leave readers breathless until the final hail of bullets. 16 pages of b&w photos. (Mar.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
All those who read Guinn's account of Bonnie and Clyde were impressed by the unprecedented level of detail he brings to the story. But a few seemed to think that all of Guinn's data got in the way of the chase. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel admitted that the level of detail posed the book's "only problem," while acknowledging that "the legend still stands under its own power." Indeed, reviewers were generally pleased by Guinn's ability to add new layers to Bonnie and Clyde's brief, hardscrabble lives and to shed new light on their impulses without weighing them down. Reviewers were particularly interested in the idea of the duo as heroes of the Great Depression, with obvious anxiety that that era might not seem so distant these days. Yes, reviewers are prone to provide enthusiastic reviews for a newspaper's books editor; yet Go Down Together is still a strong book.

From Booklist
Almost 75 years ago, the four-year murder and robbery spree of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow ended in a hail of bullets on a desolate Louisiana road. During those four years, the Barrow Gang held up a few banks, knocked over numerous grocery stores, killed several police officers, and successfully cast themselves as latter-day Robin Hoods struggling against an unjust social order. This work strives, successfully for the most part, to strip away the sensationalism and view the couple and their exploits accurately. Less lyrical than Paul Schneider in Bonnie and Clyde: The Legend behind Their Lives (2009), Guinn, an investigative journalist, uses a conventional narrative approach and utilizes primary sources effectively. Here, Bonnie is revealed as a petite, intelligent, but frustrated young woman whose thirst for excitement made her vulnerable to a more worldly and big-talking Clyde. Despite her image as a gun-toting moll, she apparently never fired a shot at anyone. Guinn describes Barrow as an almost comically inept thief who was physically weak, belligerent, and out to avenge himself upon a “system” that he believed mistreated him. For both crime aficionados and general readers with an interest in the era, this book is of great value. --Jay Freeman

Simply the Best Book on Bonnie and Clyde
By Greg Rickard
I just finished this book for the second time, and I enjoyed the read better than the first one. I've long been an enthusiast of 1930s crime books and articles and have read almost everything I could find on Bonnie and Clyde. There are several books about the couple: many of them simply rehash what's been said time and time again; a couple written by B&C family members are obviously biased toward the two criminals, sometimes outright lying; a few, however are excellent, offering new information gained from primary research and a fresh perspective. Guinn's book tops them all. His research is meticulous, and he leaves very few questions unanswered--if any.

His covers every shootout, big and small, with great care to get the who shot whom, who missed, how bad were the wounds, etc. correct. It is a huge plus that the man is a very good writer. He brings the events to life--even the ones you've read about many times before. I guarantee that you will find bits and pieces throughout the entire book that you never knew--regardless of how much you think you know about the pair.

The climax is, of course, the ambush in which Bonnie and Clyde are gunned down. There's a good chance you've read about it and/or seen it depicted in film and on TV. As good or far-fetched as other accounts may be, Guinn gets it right. From the weapons each of the six posse members used, where, precisely, they were positioned: how many feet apart--Guinn has done his homework and has left nothing uncovered--to who fired first, whose bullet hit which victim and, perhaps most importantly, who fired the final shots into an already dead or dying, Bonnie Parker.

Guinn goes further than researching their lives, crimes, and era; he offers keen insight into what Clyde or Bonnie was probably thinking at a certain juncture, why a life was spared or taken, what was running through Frank Hamer's mind before, during, and after the ambush. The author brings everything together and does a remarkably fair job throughout. He leaves no detail out, narrating each moment of each crime to let us see the ugliness, senselessness, and tragedy. And he shows the monster that Clyde Barrow often was. But he also reveals Barrow as a man who cared deeply for his family and Bonnie and who, at least in his own mind, lived by a moral code. Guinn offers no excuses for Bonnie and Clyde.

Was society partly to blame for Barrow's decision to become a career criminal? Before you answer, read the chapters about Clyde's incarceration in Huntsville prison and how he lost one job after another because of his past crimes. There is no easy answer, and Guinn knows this. He allows the reader to make up his or her own mind.

I recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested any facet of crime and/or the Depression era. It is, for now, the last and best word on the Bonnie and Clyde story.

Bonnie & Clyde
By Alicecain36
This book was bigger than what I was expecting so it took me longer to finish but I loved every minute of it. I feel that a lot of research went into the book - it started with the family life of Bonnie & Clyde, took us through their outlaw life and death, then followed through with each posse member and what happened to them after the ambush, also with family members. Also a nice section of pictures. I would recommend this book.

Relevent and Griping
By Craig T
I didn't have a particular interest in Bonnie and Clyde. I don't think I have seen the movie starring Warren Beatty. So, I read this one for no good reason other than it was there.

I loved it. Although I haven't seen the movie, I certainly pictured Warren Beatty whenever I came across anything having to do with Clyde Barrow previously, as I am sure most of us did. Not anymore; Clyde was about as far from Warren Beatty, and their lives were as far from glamorous, as it gets.

If you are extremely liberal, you could make the case that society created Bonnie and Clyde. But, that would be a cop out. Because while society had a lot to do with what Bonnie and Clyde became, many people, thousands, if not millions, have gone through the same ot worse and did not become cold-hearted killers.

Even though the story is "old," and I didn't know it well, I felt like I was being let in on something brand new, that I was hearing, as the subtitle says, the "true, untold story" for the first time. Some have written that too much detail was provided. I don't agree at all. I never felt it got bogged down in detail. The detail was comforting because it reassured me that the story was true. I did not want to read fiction. Maybe it is partially because I recently read "Mornings on Horseback" by David McCullough and felt the level of detail in that book was excessive and detracted from the story. Regardless, I felt the level of detail in Go Down Together was just right and the story fascinating.

In light of our current, or just ended, recession, all of the focus lately on the Great Depression, new Charles Ponzis roving about (see Bernie Maddoff), and the greatest disparity between the social classes in the United States since the days of Bonnie and Clyde, I found their tale to be relevant and griping.

God Is Not a Christian, Nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu...: God Dwells with Us, in Us, Around Us, as Us, by Carlton Pearson

The author of The Gospel of Inclusion continues to rouse organized religion as he raises controversial issues and provides enlightening answers to the deepest questions about God and faith.

What is God? Where is God? Who is the one true God? Questions such as these have driven a thousand human struggles, through war, terrorism, and oppression. Humanity has responded by branching off into multiple religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam—each one pitted against the other. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

In God Is Not a Christian, nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu . . . , the provocative and acclaimed Bishop Carlton Pearson follows up on his celebrated first book, The Gospel of Inclusion, to tackle these questions and many more, exploring new ideas about God and faith and putting forth the stunning assertion that God belongs to no particular religion but is an ever-loving presence available to all. For these beliefs, Bishop Pearson lost his thriving Pentecostal ministry but was catapulted instead into a greater pulpit. His readership has grown through appearances on national television and an extensive speaking schedule. With the world in the midst of a holy war, there is no better time for the wisdom of Bishop Pearson to reach a global audience.

Bishop Pearson’s many loyal fans, along with new readers, will surely welcome this provocative and eye-opening exploration of a deeper faith, one that goes far beyond any fundamentalist way of thinking, be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Simply put, Bishop Pearson dares to tell the truth so many others are too afraid to face.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Many readers will recognize Pearson as the one-time protégé of Oral Roberts and himself a dynamic and popular preacher ordained by the Church of God in Christ. Pearson fell out of favor when he openly advocated a universalist approach to salvation and was subsequently disowned by Roberts and by virtually every other evangelical or Pentecostal he had worked with. In this stirring and surprising work, Pearson goes the next step, completely distancing himself from his Pentecostal roots and aligning himself with the New Thought movement, an American spiritual philosophy that emphasizes the power of thought to affect circumstances. The author's passion jumps off each page as he attempts to guide his readers along the tortuous path that led and informed him. He argues for an open and loving faith experience, as opposed to the "cult of myths and secret rites of initiation" that he perceives Christianity to have become. Pearson will anger his old friends with this book, but he will likely make some new friends as they join him in his quest for spiritual clarity.

Review
"At the heart of this remarkable book is a compassionate voice offering wisdom-guided revelations from Bishop Pearson’s own inner exploration of scripture, the nature of God, and the realities of human existence." -- Michael Bernard Beckwith, author of Spiritual Liberation~Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential

A Critically Important Book!
By Craig Bergland
Bishop Pearson is a man of courage, vision, and integrity. In this follow up to The Gospel of Inclusion he addresses the cause of most of the wars throughout history: The tendency of religions and their adherents to believe that they are the official representatives of God, and that God is in fact a "member" of their religion. This book is so important and so impressive that, after reading the Kindle edition, I was moved to purchase a hard copy of it so that I could read it again and make notes in the margins. It is an antidote to tribal religion in all its forms, it is a corrective to practices of exclusion and oppression in the name of God, and it captures the current re-formation of Christian spirituality with the insight, passion, and sensitivity that have become hallmarks of Bishop Pearson. do not miss this book!

Great book for all seekers of Truth!
By Tivette
I discovered Bishop Pearce through an on-line search for something that led me to something, which led me to a YouTube video of him preaching to a congregation which was amazing! And later through downloading some of his sermons from the latest church: [...]

I really admire this man and his commitment to God, to go through all the challenges his life-long indoctrination put before him as he was deeply spiritually awakened and called to a much higher place in order to really serve mankind and be a true channel of God. This book and the one before tell of a very important and very human journey that many are making right now as we awaken to a higher calling on this planet and our work to transform it.

His books offer much and should be savored. This is a great book for all seekers of Truth--enjoy!

From Publishers Weekly
Sensible Melissa Romney-Jones proclaims to her enamored American client, Jonathan Riley, "I like to think I'm a vintage girl. A proper 1950s woman's woman," to which Riley responds: "A proper 1950s man's woman." Crackling with Brit chick wit, Browne's first novel stars a spunky whirlwind in search of love and money. Melissa, after losing her job as a London estate agent, starts the Little Lady Agency to attend to the social needs of single men. This requires Melissa to don a blonde wig and become Honey Blennerhesket, a posh "Mary Poppins in silk stockings." Running the new agency leads to the successful channeling of her inner glamour goddess and romance with Jonathan, but then she wonders, does he love Honey or Melissa? "Little lady" is a term that sounds as retro as Melissa's yearning for old-style romance, but her struggle to empower herself and deal with her feelings regarding the men in her life is as satisfying as free champagne. Browne's dead-on take revitalizes a genre already littered with worn-out Jimmy Choos and tattered miniskirts.

From Booklist
Brown's charming debut finds Melissa -Romney--Jones losing yet another job, this time to layoffs due to a company merger. Out on the town with friends, Melissa runs into an old school acquaintance who is working for their old etiquette teacher as a companion for wealthy men. Melissa looks up the teacher and begins to schedule dates, but she's horrified to discover her old teacher is in fact running an escort service. Melissa quickly gets out of the business, but she's taken with the idea of a chaste version of it, and starts the Little Lady Agency to help socially clueless men and those merely in need of dates. Using the name Honey, Melissa accompanies one man to a family party, and helps another dump his girlfriend. She lands her biggest client in handsome American Jonathan, who just happens to be running the company she used to work for; but Melissa starts to wonder if she's losing her objectivity when she finds herself falling for Jonathan. A warm, winning tale. Kristine Huntley

Excellent and CLEAN!
By K. Williams
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's been a while since I've found a book that I couldn't put down. Part of that may be how well I identified with the main character. The most pleasant surprise for me was how clean the story was. I enjoy reading the chick-lit beach books, but I don't like all of the sex that a lot of them have. This one was fantastic. I can't wait to read her next one; I hope it's an equally fun, clean read.

REFRESHING, WITTY, AND JUST PLAIN CUTE!
By Onie Wheeler
I bought this book on impulse at the airport due to its cute cover and the synopsis of the book and the book's author on the back of the book.

I know this statement is very puerile and vapid, but like the book's author, I collect red lipstick and etiquette books.

When I got back from my trip, I put it on my novel shelf since at the time, I was reading more "disturbing and deep" biographies and poetry that left me depressed.

Due to my reading too many depressing books (Sylvia Plath's books and poems are hardly high comedy), I decided to pick up this book in order to cheer myself up.

I found the book to be charming and I was also glad to find a contemporary book that was not full of graphic sex or violence.

I just love Melissa and her alter ego, Honey.

I was rooting for Jonathan and Melissa through the entire book.

And her father! What a jerk! I think his character is a great antagonist for poor Melissa!

I love the descriptions of Melissa's sisters. Allegra, the wilder sister and Emery, the vapid and shallow younger sister.

I do wish that Melissa's mother's character would be more developed, but I suppose that might stray from the author's intent.

I won't spoil the book's end, but it was cute and a paradox in all the right ways.

OK, this is not supposed to be "War and Peace" or even a Jacqueline Susann novel (Susann's novels are great, but always depress me).

The only "down side" I found at all is I do not like the title at all -- it gives the book a Old Lady flavor and it is far from that!

"The Little Lady Agency" it is just girly lit and fluffy as clouds on a beautiful summer day!

If you want a fun beach read or a feel good girly book, then I think you will love this.

Now I am off to order the sequel from Amazon: "Little Lady Big Apple"!

Oh yes, how about that Roger Trumpet's foul breath?

It was just okay.
By R. Hofmann
I thought the premise sounded interesting, but the book was at best, okay. Why do authors have to make it so obvious where the book is going from page one. Are there no surprises?? I try new authors, and every now and again, find one who can write. But most are disappointing. Their skills are poor; they lack creativity; and they are criminally boring.

TURN ON. TUNE IN. DROP DEAD.

If you're just joining us, welcome to radio station WVMP, "The Lifeblood of Rock'n'Roll." Con-artist-turned-station-owner Ciara Griffin manages an on-air staff of off-the-wall DJs -- including her new boyfriend Shane McAllister -- who really sink their teeth into the music of their "Life Time" (the era in which they became vampires). It's Ciara's job to keep the undead rocking, the ratings rolling, and the fan base alive -- without missing a beat.

For Halloween, WVMP is throwing a bash sure to raise the dead. They've got cool tunes, hot costumes, killer cocktails -- what could go wrong? Well, for starters, a religious firebrand ranting against the evils of the occult preempts the station's midnight broadcast. Then, when Ciara tracks down the illegal transmission, the broadcast tower is guarded by what appears to be...a canine vampire? And behind it all is a group of self-righteous radicals who think vampires suck (and are willing to stake their lives on it).

Now Ciara must protect the station while struggling with her own murky relationship issues, her best friend's unlikely romance with a fledgling vampire, and the nature of her mysterious anti-holy powers. To make it to New Year's in one piece, she'll need to learn a few new tricks....

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In Smith-Ready's espionage farce sequel to 2008's Wicked Game, Ciara Griffin and her vampire DJs face another threat to their Maryland radio station 94.3 WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock 'n' Roll. When the Family Action Network (FAN) disrupts WVMP's Halloween broadcast by pirating their signal and jamming it with antivampire rhetoric, Ciara swears revenge. Under the aegis of the International Agency for the Control and Management of Undead Corporeal Entities, Ciara turns spy and infiltrates the cult's fortress, armed with her wits and her vampire-healing antiholy blood. Aiding her are a crew of hip vamp buddies and vampire dog Dexter, whom she rescues after finding him chained to a cross outside a FAN enclave. Smith-Ready pours plenty of fun into her charming, fang-in-cheek urban fantasy, which frequently skirts the edge of parody. (May)

From School Library Journal
Once a con artist on the run, Ciara Griffin now operates as owner as well as overworked, underpaid marketing manager for a small radio station with DJs of the undead variety. On Halloween, the station's "live" nighttime broadcast from a local pub, The Smoking Pig, encounters problems almost immediately when the midnight broadcast of DJ goth queen Regina is preempted by the broadcast of a religious screed warning about the wages of sins. WVMP has been targeted by a group called Family Action Network (FAN). Mortal Ciara and her undead friends must also contend with a government agency offering to help, though its sincerity may not be genuine. Matters of the heart afflict Ciara and her immortal boyfriend, Shane. Several believable, captivating characters abound, including a sweet-natured vampire dog named Dexter. This terrific sequel to Wicked Game is by turns funny, sexy, and gripping. For urban fantasy fans.—Patricia Altner, BiblioInfo.com, Columbia, MD

Angieville: BAD TO THE BONE
By Angela Thompson
Reading Wicked Game was definitely a highlight of my summer reading last year. It easily made my Best of 2008 list and I've been looking forward to the sequel ever since. And let me tell you--you want to get a hold of this book. And if you haven't read Wicked Game yet, now's the perfect time to do so as the mass market edition was recently released! That way you'll be primed and ready for this rockin' sequel.

Ciara's life has changed just a little bit since she first came to WVMP as a part-time marketing intern. She is now, for all intents and purposes, the station owner. What that means is she is on the clock 24/7 taking care of her little flock of vampire DJs, spinning PR as the vamps spin the tunes that are their lifeblood. She's working towards her degree, taking night classes at the local community college. She is also in an increasingly serious relationship with Shane McCallister--the station's resident 90's grunge rock expert. When a group of anti-undead religious fanatics comes to town determined to stop the signal, dismantle the station, and destroy the vamps for good, Ciara and the gang refuse to go gently into that good night.

This series is just so entertaining. I can honestly say I went in not knowing what to expect plotwise, and I finished it feeling like Ms. Smith-Ready took everything and everyone in exactly the direction they needed to go. I felt thoroughly satisfied and, more importantly, I cared about each of them more than before. Even Regina. Though Jim still scares the crap out of me and Shane should not let him anywhere near Ciara ever again no matter what kind of lousy shape he's in. I continue to be extremely fond of Ciara and so it was both heartbreaking and extremely gratifying to watch her deal with her manipulative, ne'er do well father, her growing feelings for Shane, a new undead pet, and finding herself suddenly homeless. And I do have to say that, within the larger UF world, it's nice to find one without a love triangle. I love reading about Ciara and Shane. They're flawed, messed up, in danger of going off the deep end in more ways than one. And despite all of this, they treat each other carefully. How often do you read about a human/vampire couple in which the vampire is the more vulnerable of the two? She takes care of him. She keeps him tethered to the here and now. It's freaking awesome. The good news? Pocket Books bought two more books in this series. The third one will be out sometime next year.

Wicked Game, the first book in the WVMP Vampires series, was one of my absolute favorite Urban Fantasy books of 2008. Waiting for Bad to the Bone to come out was torture! I needed more of these vampires (especially Shane) ASAP! The best part is that I didn't end up disappointed after all the waiting and hype I had built up for it. Each character, that Smith-Ready has created, has their own distinct personality with quirks, issues, and history. Making her vamps a taste of fresh blood in this genre where so many vampires are cookie cut outs from others.

One of the best parts of this series is the use of music to tie the whole story together. I love music because it's always been a huge part of my life, and it's great to see someone so knowledgeable in the subject use it to make each scene better. Shane still continues to be my favorite vamp with his grungy Kurt Cobain feel, although in BTTB we get to learn more about Regina, which is great since in Wicked Game she seemed so...uptight? mean? scary? Yeah, all those things. Plus, there is the way cool addition of a vampire dog. Ciara is still trying to figure out her relationship with Shane, and they definitely take some steps in a direction, I guess we'll see if that direction ends up being bad or good in the future! All I know is that it's great to have a heroine that's NOT a vampire slayer, monster hunter, idiot, or all of the above!

Bad to the Bone is a fantastic second book, and now sadly I must wait until 2010 for book three (no title yet). If you have not read Wicked Game and are a fan of the genre I don't know what you're waiting for! You are in luck as WG was just released in mass market paperback!

You can also visit Jeri on her website for short stories about the characters, play lists, quizzes, ways to get signed book plates for your books, and her always entertaining blog! She even has an a website for WVMP Radio with merchandise!

Delight vampire readers as well as dark fantasy lovers. Jeri Smith-Ready characterizations are realistic and edgy

Bad to the Bone by Jeri Smith-Ready
Urban Fantasy- May 16th, 2009
4 stars

Bad to the Bone will delight vampire readers as well as dark fantasy lovers. While many romance books glamorize the vampire, Jeri Smith-Ready characterizations are realistic and edgy. She explores the scarier and more serious aspects of being a vampire. In her world there is no black or white. As a result her series makes for exciting and fascinating reading that is unexpected as well as chilling.

Ciara works at a radio station where the big secret is that all the DJ are vampires. The radio station is under Control a secret agency aimed at integrating vampires into society safely. And this is important because these vampires are: volatile, compulsive and unpredictable. Because they are harder to control, which makes working around them very hazardous. These vampires are stuck in the period they are turned they are unable to evolve and grow emotionally or psychologically. And it gets worse as they get older. But having vampire DJs from each era musical era is the perfect `time warp' for listeners. And a `safe' haven for vampires who can't adapt to an every changing new world.

Ciara's life is difficult as she leads a double life, tries to market the radio station and protect the vampires and society from each other. Plus Ciara's relationship with the vampire Shane is a complication that only makes her life more confusing. When she gets pulled into a cult that reviles vampires things only get more perilous.

Jeri Smith-Ready's novels are always thought provoking and complex as I wondered how Ciara can navigate her life with so many difficulties. The main question in my upper most mind was how Ciara will end up long term in her rocky relationship with the enigmatic, yet earnest and charismatic Shane. He can't be `alive' and she doesn't want to become a vampire. It will be interesting to find out if or how the author resolves this dilemma. Jeri Smith-Ready also introduces the fascinating canine vampire which I hope will play a larger role in her next book as well as delving deeper into, David (my new favorite!) another fascinating character that I would love to read more about. This is a deep book that shows all points of view, not just the main characters. And that makes it more real and emotionally charged for the reader. If you haven't read her books before you must try this series, I highly recommend it!

Blaze: A Novel, by Richard Bachman

Once upon a time, a fellow named Richard Bachman wrote Blaze on an Olivetti typewriter, then turned the machine over to Stephen King, who used it to write Carrie. Bachman died in 1985 ("cancer of the pseudonym"), but this last gripping Bachman novel resurfaced after being hidden away for decades -- an unforgettable crime story tinged with sadness and suspense. Clayton Blaisdell, Jr., was always a small-time delinquent. None too bright either, thanks to the beatings he got as a kid. Then Blaze met George Rackley, a seasoned pro with a hundred cons and one big idea. The kidnapping should go off without a hitch, with George as the brains behind their dangerous scheme. But there's only one problem: by the time the deal goes down, Blaze's partner in crime is dead. Or is he? Includes a previously uncollected story, "Memory" -- the riveting opening to Stephen King's new Scribner hardcover novel, Duma Key.

From Publishers Weekly
Written circa 1973, this trunk novel, as Bachman's double (aka Stephen King) refers to it in his self-deprecating foreword, lacks the drama and intensity of Carrie and the horror opuses that followed it. Still, this fifth Bachman book (after 1996's The Regulators) shows King fine-tuning his skill at making memorable characters out of simple salt-of-the-earth types. Clayton Blaze Blaisdell has fallen into a life of delinquency ever since his father's brutal abuse rendered him feebleminded. King alternates chapters recounting Blaze's past mistreatment at a series of Maine orphanages and foster homes with Blaze's current plans to follow through on a kidnapping scheme plotted by his recently murdered partner in crime, George Rackley. Blaze talks to George as though he's still there, and the conversations give the tale tension, with Blaze coming across as a pitiable and surprisingly sympathetic contrast to prickly George. Despite its predictability, this diverting soft-boiled crime novel reflects influences ranging from John Steinbeck to James M. Cain. Also included is a previously uncollected story, Memory, the seed of King's forthcoming novel Duma Key. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Blaze—Clayton Blaisdell Jr.—is a big dummy, very big: six-seven, 270. But not exactly very dumb. He was a smart little boy until his drunken father threw him downstairs three times in a row. He relearned to read a bit, mostly comic books, but was thereafter an otherwise learning-challenged ward of the state with a horrendous dent in his forehead. Now a mid-twenties adult, he has just lost his bosom buddy and partner in petty cons, George, who still speaks to him somehow, especially about the big score, the one to retire on. Blaze realizes that George isn't really haunting him; in fact, Blaze possesses an excellent, though highly selective, memory. In honor of George, he decides to do the big one, the kidnapping of a wealthy couple's baby. He succeeds, albeit imperfectly enough that the state cops and FBI know whodunit within a day, and he surprises himself by bonding with the infant, which for readers makes the hunt for Blaze an Alfred Hitchcock–like exercise in moral ambivalence. It's impossible not to root for Blaze, especially since Bachman flashes back copiously and with maximal sympathy to the damaged man's past. Stephen King, who "buried" Bachman in 1985, here revamps a 1973 manuscript by his alter ego that he says is something of an homage to James T. Farrell, Jim Thompson, and Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Powerful and moving, it's a worthy tribute, especially to Steinbeck. Olson, Ray

About the Author
During the years 1966-1973, Stephen King was actually two men. Stephen King wrote (and sold) horror stories to magazines such as Cavalier and Adam, while Richard Bachman wrote a series of novels that would not be published until the early 1980s and were then collected as The Bachman Books. Bachman died of pseudonym cancer in 1985, shortly after another of his novels, Thinner, was attributed to Stephen King; but a sixth Bachman novel, The Regulators, surfaced in 1995 and was published simultaneously with Stephen King's Desperation, to which it bore a weird resemblance. Blaze -- both brutal and sensitive -- was the last novel written during Bachman's early period. It is his legacy.

King's proceeds from Blaze will be donated to The Haven Foundation, which supports freelance artists.

Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. His recent work includes End of Watch, the short story collection The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, Finders Keepers, Mr. Mercedes (an Edgar Award winner for Best Novel), Doctor Sleep, and Under the Dome. His novel 11/22/63—a recent Hulu original television series event—was named a top ten book of 2011 by The New York Times Book Review and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller as well as the Best Hardcover Book Award from the International Thriller Writers. His epic series, The Dark Tower, is the basis for a major motion picture from Sony. He is the recipient of the 2014 National Medal of Arts and the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, novelist Tabitha King.

Blaze burns bright! Early, and great, King tale.
By Beam Me Up
Back in 1988, when I was researching my book, THE STEPHEN KING COMPANION, I spent time at the Special Collections at the Fogler Library at Orono, Maine, where the original, typed manuscript of BLAZE had been deposited, along with a number of other unpublished novels. This was what King calls a "trunk" novel, meaning it's a book that he never published; he wrote it and put it in the trunk, thinking it was unpublishable.

Well, when I read it, page by page, from first until last, I felt differently: Unlike, say, SWORD IN THE DARKNESS (a novel about a race riot), which is another trunk novel by King, BLAZE shone with a gritty kind of storytelling that marked King's early fiction. Clearly a homage to John Steinbeck's novella "Of Mice and Men," the story centers on Clayton Blaze Blaisdell, who is party to the kidnapping, along with his party George Rackley; Clayton, whose checkered past -- in and out of orphanages and foster homes -- strikes a sympathetic tone with the reader, as he finds love (albeit one-sided) where he least expects it: the infant he has helped abduct. (You may recall the famous Lindbergh kidnapping in all this, as I did.)

The most difficult thing in fiction is to make the bad guy seem sympathetic, but King pulls it off. In spades. Just as we feel for Lenny in Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," so, too, do we feel for Clayton, who is a criminal on the run; he has stolen the infant but, in the process, has stolen our hearts, as well. That is the art of fiction, the art of storytelling, and King's always had that gotta-read-the-next-page-to-see-what's-happened quality.

In King's fiction, the character comes first; the story then comes out of the character. King's modus operandi has always been that if you grow to care about the character, the story will mean something to you; but if the characters in the novel aren't sympathetic, you won't care about their fates and, by the extension, the book itself. So King starts with compelling characters believably motivated and pursuing their own ends.

What most readers probably don't know is that King's royalties on this book go to fund one of his foundations, set up for indigent creators who find themselves in dire financial straits due to no fault of their own. The Haven Foundation is the beneficiary of King's sales, and it's the only foundation of its kind. It's also King giving back to the community that supported him, which speaks of King's enormous generosity. (Wouldn't it be nice if the publisher matched King's donation dollar for dollar? Then the publisher could give back to the community, as well.)

At the Amazon discount, you can't afford NOT to buy this book if you're a King fan or you're a fan of good old-fashioned storytelling. And, as a bonus, your purchase will help, indirectly, freelance writers who these days are the true mavericks, the last of a dying breed. (Long story here, and this isn't the time or place to talk about it.) Suffice it to say that fans who want a taste of the early King will find their appetites more than satisfied with this relentless and unstoppable storytelling engine that propels the reader from first page to last: BLAZE is a meteor cutting a bright swath across the heavens, and you'll find a lot to mine in this early but wholly satisfying story by America's storyteller, Stephen King.

Bachman (King) does it again!
By R. W. Huff
This will only be my opinion, but I think this is one of the best Richard Bachman books by King. I feel that the Long Walk is the best Bachman book. Blaze comes in a close second. I couldn't put it down. Everytime a chapter ended I thought "I've gotta see what happens next." I have read a lot of reviews talking about feeling sorry for Blaze. I was curious how anyone could feel sorry for a child kidnapper, but found that I also felt sorry for him. Especially at the end.

To me the story was well paced, and flowed evenly. There wasn't a lot of description to bog down the story, but just enough to keep you going. King does a great job of not telling when the time period was while still telling you that it was in the last thirty years.

After finishing the book I felt sad. Also I thought a lot about the book for several days after finishing it. Not many books stick in my mind like that. So to wrap this up, I really feel this is an excellant book! If you want a great story that doesn't require reading seven-hundred pages, then you really should give this book a try.

Just when you thought there were no great, early King books left to read.....
By Ron2112
So by the time you read this review, you will likely have seen many other for this book relating how this came to be published as a "lost" Bachman book. And that really says it all. This story has that precise tone that reads like every other book King has published as Richard Bachman (with "Thinner" being a possible exception). Nice tight, gritty story-telling here -- and with the verbose, flacid "Lisey's Story" being the last King book released prior to this one, that comes as a welcome surprise.

This book could easily fit in as the fifth novel of "The Bachman Books" collection. The tone most nearly matches that of "Road Work" and "Rage." So if you like either of those, this is a sure bet. I think it was somewhere in the introduction where King cites "Of Mice and Men" as an influence here, and that influence is definitely apparent. Although with a distinct "King twist" to be sure.

If you are a fan of the old stuff, you owe it to yourself to pick this book up.

I, Sniper: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel (Bob Lee Swagger Novels), by Stephen Hunter

Four famed '60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. Under enormous media scrutiny, the FBI quickly concludes that Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock, whose ninety-three kills were considered the leading body count tally among American marksman in Vietnam, was the shooter. But as the Bureau, led by Special Agent Nick Memphis, bears down, Hitchcock commits suicide. In closing out the investigation, Nick discovers a case made in heaven: everything fits, from timeline, ballistics, and forensics to motive, means, and opportunity. Maybe it's a little too perfect.

Nick asks his friend, the retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, to examine the data. Using a skill set no other man on earth possesses, Swagger soon discovers unseen anomalies and gradually begins to unravel a sophisticated conspiracy -- one that would require the highest level of warcraft by the most superb special operations professionals. As Swagger penetrates the deepest secrets of the sniper world and its new technology, Nick stands firm in the face of hardball PR initiatives and an inflamed media calling for his ouster.

Swagger soon closes in, and those responsible will stop at nothing to take him out. But these heavily armed men make the mistake of thinking they are hunting Bob, when he is, in fact, hunting them.

I, Sniper will satisfy Stephen Hunter's legions of fans and win him droves of new ones with its signature blend of brilliant plotting, vivid characters, razor-sharp dialogue, and extraordinary gunfights. And when Swagger and the last of his antagonists finally face each other, reenacting a classic ritual of arms, it is clear that at times there's nothing more necessary than a good man with a gun and the guts to use it.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bestseller Hunter keeps Bob Lee Swagger, his home-spun, hard-charging hero, doing what Swagger does best in his sixth novel to feature the former Marine sniper: thwarting the authorities, staying loyal to a disappearing code of honor and hunting down evildoers who deserve everything they get. When a sniper shoots dead Joan Flanders (think Jane Fonda) and three other victims associated with the 1960s peace movement, the FBI decides the killer is the most famous sniper in America, Carl Hitchcock, who's gone nuts and decided to up his total number of kills. Swagger soon realizes that Hitchcock, a fellow ex-Marine and Vietnam vet, is innocent, while the real killer, who's using cutting-edge, electronic sniper gear, is still at large. After two inferior Bob Lee Swagger books, The 47th Samurai (2007) and Night of Thunder (2008), Hunter is back at the top of his game. He's the best on the subject of guns and what damage bullets can do to human flesh. (Dec.)

Review
“…Hunter is back at the top of his game.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“It’s a troubling moral position, of course, the idea of the sniper as a man of courage, and Hunter makes the most of it, demanding that the reader rethink common cultural assumptions about good and evil. Those philosophical underpinnings give the narrative depth, but finally, as all Bob Lee fans know, it comes down to 'straight killing time.' And so it does, in a ramped-up, high-tech High Noon finale that will leave even unsympathetic readers gasping. As always, Hunter makes it work with precise, detail-rich prose that strips the faux glamour from gun fighting and leaves only the skills of the combatants set against the horrors they wreak.”—Bill Ott, Booklist, starred review

“In his guns-a-poppin’ latest, Hunter pits his series hero against a nest of sharp-shooting vipers. [D]ust off the OK Corral. Even the somewhat squeamish, and even certifiable gun-dummies, may once again find chivalric, heroic Bob Lee just about irresistible.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Hunter's thrillers are always taut, exciting, and well written, and his latest is no exception. There's also a lot of gun and tech talk as Swagger uses decades' worth of skills to stay a step or three ahead of the baddies. Swagger fans will not be disappointed.”—Robert Conroy, Library Journal

"Stephen Hunter’s I, Sniper brings back one of the great characters in modern thrillerdom, Bob Lee Swagger, everyone’s favorite lethal, dour Southerner. I kind of want Swagger to meet up with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher one day, in a contest to see who could say the least while doing the most damage."—Malcolm Gladwell

A really interesting and worthwhile story....
By Robert Busko
I, like many others, gave up on Stephen Hunter. His last few books have left something to be desired, though, in all honesty, a lukewarm effort by Hunter is better than the best efforts of several celebrated authors. I Sniper is a return to the old Hunter. Fast paced, well developed plot, great characters, and suspense squared, I Sniper might make your palms sweat.

The story begins with the assassinations of four prominent and rapidly aging Viet Nam anti war protestors. One, Joan Flanders, a Jane Fonda knock off, is killed on the second page. The others happen in quick succession leaving the reader wondering where the story is going.

As the book moves on, the FBI feels the killer has to be a Viet Nam vet with an axe to grind and a very specific set of skills. The list of prospective suspects isn't that long and the authorities settle on Carl Hitchcock. But Hitchcock throws them a curve when he commits suicide. Bob Lee Swagger, a Hunter regular, doesn't believe that Hitchcock was the culprit and for reasons of his own decides to prove it but eventually finds himself in the real killer's sights

Hunter takes his shots (no pun intended) at the New York Times as well as the antiwar protestors as well. Interesting!

I Sniper won't disappoint the reader. With a mix of international intrigue and just plain down to earth imagination, Hunter delivers big time.

A five star read for sure.

Fun, Fun, Fun... Straightforward and Simple Storytelling
By Brian Baker
Is it "great literature"? No. Is it a puzzling whodunnit? No. Is it a classic Bob Lee Swagger tale?

Most definitely.

The top Vietnam War Marine sniper, Carl Hitchcock, seems to have gone off the rails, murdering liberal icons from the Vietnam era and ultimately taking his own life.

Enter aging Rusted Knight on Tired Steed Bob "The Nailer" Swagger, himself one of the top Vietnam Marine snipers, who doesn't believe Hitchcock could come so completely unglued, and who decides to look into the affair with the help and sanction of his FBI compadre Nick Memphis.

Swagger puts his life at risk - as usual! - to probe for the truth, coming up against political hacks, rogue killers, and a self-indulgent billionaire intent on burying the investigation in order to protect their own agendas.

This is a fun book chock-full of figures who will be easily identifiable to those of us who lived through the Vietnam Era, especially if you're a "gun guy" and/or a veteran yourself. Hunter clearly takes delight in skewering the liberals of the era (and those of the modern era), as well as paying homage to the real heroes.

Carl Hitchcock (Carlos Hathcock, the actual top Vietnam Marine sniper); "Hanoi Joan" Flanders ("Hanoi Jane" Fonda) and her ex-husband T.T. Constable ("T.T." as in Ted Turner), the "Times" (as in "New York"), several others. Part of the fun in the book - if you're a conservative - is in identifying the characters and enjoying this device.

Another thing that appeals to me is that Bob Lee doesn't suffer from Peter Pan Syndrome by seeming to be immune to the realities of advancing age, a shortcoming in several other series, most notably Burke's Dave Robicheaux and Crais's Elvis Cole characters (as much as I love those books). In both those series, the central characters are also Vietnam vets, but neither seems to age, somehow. That war ended for the US in 1975 with the fall of Saigon - almost 35 years ago - and even then we had very few troops in-country, and those were pretty much all in Saigon. That means that even the youngest person alive today who could have possibly been there would be at least 53, and the reality is that if the character saw field combat he'd be even older, as we stopped ground operations in 1972. We vets are a graying bunch. No matter how much I'm still a stud in my mind's eye, every time I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror, I'm reminded of the harsh reality of the situation!

So, if you want to read a fun book with lots of action, suspense, gun stuff, and conservative politics, this book's for you!

Better Buckle up: Bob Lee is back. He's angry and he's out for blood!
By Montana Billy
Bob Lee Swagger is back in the game and Stephen Hunter is at the top of his form. One of Bob Lee's fellow snipers is the prime suspect in a series of horrific shootings and the press and the public want him brought down. No need for jury and judge. The guy is guilty: Just put him away!
The deal is, the whole thing just doesn't sit right with Bob Lee. Once again, it's time to hunt. From the opening pages of this latest Hunter work to the edge-of-your-seat ending, readers are in for a fast, furious and violent ride. The characterizations are vivid and entirely believable. Bob Lee looks at things as black or white, but much of this story is colored in shades of gray. Things are not always what they seem, or are they?
As usual, Bob Lee is operating on his own much of the time. He's working for the good guys but they don't always see it that way. Some of the good guys actually may be bad guys. The opposition includes at least one very likable assassin. He even fools eagle-eye Bob.
Hunter is right on in development of his characters, and the gunfights and other action scenes are superbly believable. There is much in the story line that should please many, many Vietnam veterans. Members of the so-called gun culture will be delighted, and rightly so.Hunter gets guns right!
I like to ration myself to a chapter or two a night of Hunter's new works, stretching out the pleasure they bring for as long as possible. Sometimes I even manage to do that for two or three evenings. Impossible with "I, Sniper"! I went to bed, picked it up, read two chapters, got out of bed, went to the study and, several hours later, finished it.
Now I can take it again, a chapter or two a night.
Thanks, Hunter, but why couldn't the book have been published in time for Christmas gifts?
