I'm not a nice guy, but I try to be...

Such is the basic worldview of Mike Harmon, former SEAL and accidental medieval warlord. A lot of us in the uglier parts of the US military are there to channel our demons into something for the betterment of society. When your sole talent and love is plotting the deaths of your fellow men in as messy and artistic a way as possible, yet you're socialized enough as a human being to know it's "wrong", you might as well go where you're hunting for the betterment of mankind. I read this one right on the heels of Ringo's We Few, and saw elements of the conflicted Prince Roger in Mike. I know what it's like to want to kill someone so bad I could taste it, yet knowing it's just not cool to do so. Finding an outlet for those energies now that my active infantry days are drawing to a close would be nice. Too bad there's no valley of the Kildara out there for the rest of us old soldiers.

While it's a novel that deals with the ugly truth of the international sex trade, it's true that Mike has his own kinks and falls into situations where he gets to exercise them. My wife, a conniseur of such fiction, rates one scene in particular rather highly.

The trigger pulling portions aren't bad, but often soft on some of the details. SPR's aren't really explained for what they are, and I think there's too much use of the H&K MP-5, then again I'm not an admirer of any 9mm SMG for beyond room use.

The disclaimer in the front of the book, often overlooked, actually contains one of the funniest lines in the book.

And i got to say, that the tradition and style of John Ringo's writing kept me up all night reading the book on my computer.

Choosers of the Slain is a continuing book about Mike Jenkins and his "life" and his effects on people who enter it as well as those that affect him. In Ghost, After retiring from the service Mike starts to use his college benefits and performs a daring rescue of American women held hostage, he gets his reward on the death of several "bad" people and lives a life of luxury and travels the world where he ends up in Georgia. "Kildar" begins with him purchasing a valley filled with farms and tenants. The tenants are special in that they are a people different from the local population, i don't want to give too much away, but after training these people and doing a few local missions, "Choosers of the Slain" begins with more plots and intrique. From senators and pimps the action doesn't slow down.

Ghost, i purchased on a whim, my first e-book purchase. My second was Kildar, and now i bought this one as well. I can't wait to read the next installment, as there seems to be plenty of potential story lines John can go to from here.

Brain candy

Yes, this book is brain candy. Potato chips for the mind. So what? Not every book has to be freakin' "War and Peace". Mr. Ringo gives us the ultimate adolescent fantasy -- a super-warrior with a harem, his own band of warriors, all the weapons & gadgets he wants, Presidential support, his own brewery, and millions of dollars. (Having read what I just wrote, I feel a strong urge to shout, "Dude! Chicks and money and guns! And beer!Awesome!" I'll try to restrain myself. Heh.)
While the sex scenes are a bit overdone, the novel itself is quite enjoyable. I read it while stuck in an 8-hour plane ride; and I must say it was very entertaining. If you want a fast-paced, action-filled story that'll keep your interest, this book is for you.

Even with the cold metal of the gun's barrel pressed hard against her temple, Jasmine's feet would not move.

"I want you out of my house."

Jasmine wanted to plead for her life. Beg for forgiveness and give him at least one hundred of the good reasons she had for telling her husband all of those lies. But her lips, like her feet, were frozen with fear.

"I said get out of my house."

The venom in his voice turned her fear into fight. And she fought with her words. "Please, Hosea, please forgive me for not telling you the truth before. But I'll tell you now; I'm forty-three, not thirty-eight."

The gun cocked.

She dropped to her knees and cried. "And I didn't tell you that I was married before because -- "

Hosea pushed the metal into her skin.

"Please," she begged more. "Please."

He pulled the trigger.

Jasmine screamed. Shot up straight in bed, her skin dripping with the same sweat that drenched their satin sheets for the many nights that this nightmare invaded her sleep.

"Darlin'?"

She heard the calm of her husband's voice, then felt the warmth of his arms. "Darlin', it's just a dream." The kisses he planted on her forehead were meant to soothe, but that didn't work.

"It's all right, darlin'," Hosea kept saying. "Just another one of those bad dreams."

He's wrong, she thought as she settled back in bed. This was not just a dream.

Even as the rhythm of Hosea's sleep breathing returned, Jasmine's eyes stayed wide open. She knew if she surrendered to unconsciousness, Hosea's words would come back. And those words -- far more than the gun -- made fear rise like bile within her.

In her nightmare, Hosea was as cold as the gun he held. As cold as he'd been on the day, about eighteen months ago, when he'd actually told her he'd wanted nothing more to do with her -- right after she revealed that he wasn't the father of their daughter.

For the millionth time Jasmine wished that her lies had ended there. But they didn't. And she knew if her secrets were uncovered her nightmare would turn into reality.

This dream was a sign, a warning -- she was sure. She'd had it two or three times over the past year. But in the last two weeks, the ghost of her deceptive past haunted her with an almost daily vengeance.

She knew the reason why -- it was because in ten days she and Hosea were renewing their vows.

"I want us to stand before God again," Hosea had told her when he first came up with the idea. "I want us to recommit."

Her eyes had widened with surprise. "Baby, don't people wait until their tenth or twentieth anniversary to do that?"

"There're no rules." He'd embraced her. "What's most important is the reason why. And with the way we started..." He'd stopped right there. Jasmine had closed her eyes and remembered the wonder of their first six months of marriage, and then the beautiful birth of their daughter. But when Jacqueline was barely twenty-four hours old, Hosea had walked away -- from both her and the baby. Yet God's grace had found its way to her through Hosea's heart.

"I forgive you" was all Hosea said when he came back to her. He'd held her and Jacqueline and explained that it was God who had put them together, so they were divinely obligated to work through whatever challenges they had.

From that day, he'd loved her, claimed Jacqueline as his own, and together they'd lived in matrimonial bliss. But in the middle of her heaven, she wallowed in hell, terrified that one day the rest of her lies would be revealed.

Now, the fact that Hosea wanted to renew their vows so that they could start afresh made her tremble in terror. How could she stand before God -- again -- and pretend that all was well?

I've got to find a way to tell Hosea.

But even as her spirit longed to stop the lies, she didn't have the faith -- or the guts -- to tell the truth. It was too risky; she could lose Hosea, this time for good. No, she couldn't take that chance. Her secrets would have to stay tucked away in the dark, and she'd just pray that they never came to light.

TWO

The mission: to keep all of her secrets hidden.

And there was only one person Jasmine knew who could make sure that task was accomplished.

"Good to see you, Mrs. Bush." With his thick Lithuanian accent, the doorman greeted Jasmine as if he hadn't just seen her last week.

She waved to Henrikas and scooted into the elevator. Although she, Hosea, and Jacqueline had moved away a year ago, this Park Avenue building still felt like home. A minute later, the apartment door opened before she even had the chance to knock.

"I thought you were coming yesterday." Mae Frances spoke in her signature grumpy tone. But her eyes sparkled.

"Hello to you, too, Nama," Jasmine said, calling Mae Frances by the name that eighteen-month-old Jacqueline had given to the woman who, just three years ago, had been nothing more than the cantankerous old lady who lived across the hall. But now, Mae Frances was part of their family and the only grandmother Jacqueline would ever know.

Jasmine kissed her cheek, then swept into the apartment. She stopped, a déjà vu moment -- back to the first time she'd entered this space. She'd been shocked when she'd walked into this drab apartment that didn't match the woman who was always drenched in diamonds and furs and who was chauffeured through the city in a limousine. She remembered her pain when she discovered that it was all a façade, that Mae Frances was a woman living in poverty with a prideful heart too hard to ask for help. Mae Frances had been an unsaved soul whose eternal doom had already begun right here on earth.

But that was then. Now there was no darkness inside Mae Frances's residence. Today, the sun's rays pressed through the massive windows framed with designer drapes that Jasmine had bought and Hosea had hung. The aged, raggedy furniture was gone, replaced with the chic pieces that had once graced Jasmine's apartment.

"What are you grinning at?" Mae Frances grumbled, standing as erect and elegant as a dancer.

"Your apartment looks good."

"Umph." Mae Frances smoothed the new silk skirt that Jasmine had bought her last week before she settled onto the sofa. "I'm just holding this furniture until you and your husband move. You need to get out of that penthouse and find a home with a yard for my granddaughter." Her eyes scanned the room. "Then I'll give you back all of this fancy stuff -- I don't need it. What's this ugly color, anyway, aqua?"

Jasmine didn't bother to answer. She'd come to learn that this was just Mae Frances's way. Her tone, her words had nothing to do with her heart.

"I'm just doing this as a favor for you." Mae Frances continued her rant. Still, she was stiff, but her smile matched the light in her eyes.

"And we thank you."

They both knew she'd given Mae Frances the furniture. But while the woman Jasmine had come to love like a mother had changed much over the years of their friendship, her pride still remained. So, Jasmine let her keep her dignity and went along with whatever role Mae Frances wanted to play on any given day.

In an instant, Jasmine's smile was gone. "Do you have the information?"

Solemnly, Mae Frances nodded and handed Jasmine a slip of paper.

She took a moment before she glanced at the note: Kenny Larson. And next to her ex-husband's name was a number with a 678 area code.

"How did you get this?"

Mae Frances waved her hands in the air. "One of my connections."

Jasmine shook her head. She'd grown closer to Mae Frances than anyone besides Hosea. But still, her friend was a mystery. She had no idea how Mae Frances always had the hook-up. It was one of her connections who had helped Jasmine almost get away with keeping her daughter's paternity a secret. Dr. Jeremy Edmonds, an Upper East Side ob/gyn, had twisted the truth, making sure that Hosea believed Jasmine's lies -- all for a fee, of course.

Mae Frances stopped Jasmine's memories. "You need to make this call."

"What should I say?"

"Find out his intentions. Make sure he has no plans to mess up your life." Mae Frances tilted her head. "I still can't believe you were married before."

She nodded. "Kenny was my high school sweetheart. I was a cheerleader and he was the star of the football team, on his way to the NFL."

"Hmph. Guess that didn't happen."

Jasmine shook her head. "He got hurt in college. Messed up all our hopes of becoming rich and famous. We never even got close -- he ended up being nothing more than a numbers cruncher."

"So explain to me why you never told Preacher Man?" she asked, referring to the name she'd given Hosea the moment she'd met him.

"I don't know why," Jasmine whined. That was the truth. She had no idea why she'd told that lie. It made no sense now. But back then, when she was determined to become Hosea's wife, she was convinced that the lie was necessary; sure that Hosea -- a minister -- would never consider making a divorced woman his wife. She knew now that she'd been wrong. But what she wasn't so certain of was what Hosea would do if he found out. Even if he could forgive her for the lie, would he forgive how -- and for how long -- she'd hidden the truth?

That's why she had to make this call.

Jasmine's heart pressed hard against her chest as she dialed. She wasn't afraid of her ex -- just of the secret that he unknowingly held.

"Hello."

Jasmine didn't know why a woman's voice surprised her. "May I speak to Kenny?"

"Who's calling?"

None of your business was what Jasmine wanted to say, the Jezebel rising in her. She wondered what other words she could say to make this woman -- whoever she was -- even more insecure. But then, Jasmine remembered; she was no longer the woman who went after another woman's man.

"Tell Kenny it's an old friend."

And The Truth Shall Set You Free

There are very few sequels that I really enjoy. There are even fewer three- peats that I enjoy, but author Victoria Christopher Murray pulled out all stops with Too Little,Too Late. Jasmine Larson Bush is back and is still trying to help God with all her schemes and lies. Only, this time Jasmine's schemes and lies not only affect her life with her husband, Hosea, but they follow her across the country and Brian, her baby daddy, becomes caught up in the mix. But, as always, God shows up and reminds her that He is in charge and does not need her help.

In June 2006, Jasmine and Hosea are living the good life. They have overcome the many obstacles that caused division in their marriage in the last book. As the couple head to the altar to renew their vows and start anew, Jasmine still has a few secrets she cannot quite tell her husband. When Hosea announces that the family will be moving to Los Angeles for three months, Jasmine is worried, but confident her secrets will be safe.

Also in June 2006, Alexis follow her husband to what she suspects is a secret rendevous. Can their marriage survive when Brian's secret come to light?

In August 2006, the couples meet, and not under the best of circumstances. Hosea and Jasmine agree to meet with Brian when Alexis happens upon the scene. What she sees sends her world spiraling out of control.

Will the lives of these two couples ever be the same? You have to read Too Little, Too Late and find out the answer. Be prepared because there are some jaw dropping moments that will have you screaming, gasping and laughing out loud. I loved how Victoria wrote this novel in three parts. Jasmine and Hosea's story, Brian and Alexis' story and then the story of Jasmine, Hosea, Brian and Alexis. Also, it is always a pleasure to read about Mae Francis, a wise woman with a past like Jasmine's, who has made a complete turnaround. I highly recommend this book.

You Made Your Bed, Now Lie In It!

Jasmine marries, Mr. Hosea Bush, a minister, who has accepted Jasmine's devilish ways. Hosea stuck with Jasmine through good and bad times and accepted the past as the past as they tried to maintain a healthy marriage together as a family. Jasmine's daughter, Jacqueline, was the main reason that Hosea stayed with Jasmine. When Natasha reappears in Hosea's life, all hell begins to break loose. She begins to intimidate Jasmine with her little skills and tactics to gain Hosea's love. Jasmine is no fool, though. Game always recognizes game!

Brian Lewis, the father of Jasmine's child's, has problems with his wife, Alexis. She thinks that he is being unfaithful to her. Brian is forced to prove to her otherwise, and that may entail digging up old secrets from the past.

"Too Little, Too Late" by Victoria Christopher Murray is an excellent read. It is one of the best sequels I've read! This book is definitely a page turner and I will be looking forward to more of Murray's books in the future. Keep up the good work!

Victoria Christopher Murray has come again with a new and improved Jasmine! Or has she really improved? Jasmine and Hosea have returned with a stronger love complete with baby Jacqueline and the infamous dry witted Mae Frances. This power couple has really grown in their ministry although Jasmine is still battling the old man as her past lies continue to haunt her. Hosea has accepted Jacqueline as his very own flesh and blood child while his love for Jasmine grows stronger each day as he witnesses the changes in her growth as a Christian.

Upon the renewing of their vows, the family has to temporarily move to California and it's stirring up mayhem in Jasmine's equilibrium with the close proximity to Brian Lewis, Jacqueline's biological father. In the midst of this storm, Jasmine faces one of her toughest trials, an adversary that is even more devious than she was in her past! In his quest to assure Jasmine of his love and loyalty to her and their wedding vows, Hosea is also battling the demons of the flesh as passionate memories of his past relationship with his old flame, Natasia Redding.

Too Little Too Late is a must read for an update of the latest drama revolving around the legendary Jasmine Larson Bush! I thoroughly enjoyed the unveiling of Jasmine as well as the insight of Hosea as being a full blooded man as well as a man of GOD! She challenges you with the thin lines between love and hate, lies by omission or commission. Ms. Murray also shows you the ease with which one may get caught up in evading small pieces of information that quickly builds until there is a definitive wall blocking what was once open and honest communication in a relationship. Ms. Murray gives Christian Lit an enlightening as well as inspirational voice that is not intimidating, restricted, or too monotonous. The scenes are intense and have you anticipating each page as each layer of the characters are revealed. The characters are easy to relate to, the situations are most definitely believable, and the reactions are real which in my opinion classifies this as an excellent read!!! Great job Ms. Murray!

Mystery, Intrigue & Romance

Storm Syrrell returns from Gold of Kings for another thrilling mystery, penned by the "Gentleman Adventurer," Davis Bunn. She's still an antiquarian, this time desperate for cash. She should refuse to work with the mystery client who asks her to track down a non-existent antique with miraculous healing powers. But her desperation pushes her to take on this deep-pocketed client. There's grave danger, adventure, and international travel, crafted by Bunn with authenticity and action. And romance. If she can live long enough.

Bunn serves as Novelist in Residence for Regent's College at Oxford University. He also teaches creative writing programming for Oxford. He speaks at writers conferences around the world. Fast paced

Davis Bunn brings back the cast of Storm, Emma and Harry in "The Black Madonna" and sends them all over the world in chase of various ancient religious icons. It is full of international intrigue, mystery and suspense - who are the good guys, who are the bad guys? I was guessing through a lot of the book, Russia, Poland, England, America, who is behind the sudden outrageously high priced items at auction. Will it tear Europe apart when its discovered that the Black Madonna in Poland has been replaced with a fake? Who bombed Harry? Who wants Storm dead? This book will keep you on your toes to the end!

Nightmare on the Naktong

It was seventy -five miles from Hill 202 near Sachon to the town of Miryang, now threatened by an estimated 7,000 enemy troops, who had waded across the shallow Naktong River, towing crude rafts loaded with heavy weapons, vehicles, and supplies. By August 8, an entire reinforced North Korean regiment had established a bridgehead on the east bank of the river, which was the last natural barrier between the Communist army and Pusan.

Over the next few days, the NKPA had steadily broadened its foothold until most of its crack Fourth Division -- the same unit that had shared in the capture of Seoul, then routed Task Force Smith -- was on the American side of the stream, opening a yawning gap in U.S. lines. The gap was in a cluster of rugged hills, where a sharp bend in the river surrounded a thumbshaped strip of land on three sides to form a topographical oddity that the Americans called the Naktong Bulge. Unless the gap could be closed, the main supply route between Pusan and the inland city of Taegu, headquarters of General Walker's Eighth Army, was in danger, and Taegu itself might be overrun.

In his first attempt to dislodge the enemy troops, Walker ordered the recently arrived Second Infantry Division's Ninth Regiment, commanded by Colonel John G. Hill, to join elements of General John Church's 24th Division to create Task Force Hill. In addition to his own regiment, Hill was placed in control of all 24th Division units in Church's southern sector -- giving him a force equal to three full infantry regiments -- and ordered to assault the enemy bridgehead.

To Walker's distress, however, the attack by Task Force Hill on August 11 met a reception hauntingly similar to those encountered by previous Walker task forces. The attack lost its momentum and dissolved in confusion when the North Koreans attacked at the same time. Hill tried twice more, on August 14 and 15, but his troops ran into a stone wall of resistance, and bad weather deprived them of air support.

During this interval, the enemy had spirited more than 100 machine guns, considerable artillery (including a number of American 105s seized at Taejon), and even several tanks across the river. Entrenched in the high ground and with superior weaponry, the NKPA force was simply too strong, and Hill was forced to break off the attack and take up defensive positions east of the enemy stronghold.

By now, Walker's patience was frayed to the breaking point. He minced no words when he told Church, "I'm giving you the Marine brigade, and I want this situation cleaned up -- and quick!"

On their arrival at Miryang on the afternoon of August 15, General Craig and his men confronted stakes that could not have been higher. The consensus among high-echelon UN commanders was that if Miryang fell, neither Taegu nor Pusan could be held. Walker himself pledged to fight in the streets if the enemy got into Taegu.

"And you'd better be prepared to do likewise," he told one field commander, whose reticence and excuses brought Walker to the boiling point. "Now get back to your division and fight it! I don't want to see you back from the front again unless it's in your coffin."

Meanwhile, by August 15, more than 400,000 Korean refugees had crowded into Taegu, and the ROK government, fearing its security could no longer be guaranteed in the city, packed up and moved to Pusan.

In addition to the precarious situation at the Naktong Bulge, Walker faced serious problems all across the front. The First Cavalry Division, charged with anchoring a tremendously wide section of the front west of Taegu, had repulsed repeated NKPA incursions across the Naktong farther to the north but remained under heavy pressure from the enemy. In the far southwest, although the Marine attacks had left NKPA forces weakened and disorganized, Army lines continued to develop leaks after the Marines' hurried withdrawal from Sachon. On the east side of the peninsula, the ROK Third Division was forced out of the secondary port of Pohang-dong and evacuated under cover of American air and naval forces, then relanded farther south. With NKPA troops only a few hundred yards from its runways, the U.S. Fifth Air Force abandoned Yonil Airfield, its only base on the east coast, and moved its desperately needed F-51 squadrons back to Japan. The entire eastern front looked to be hovering on the verge of collapse.

If there was any small shred of hope remaining, it lay with the Marines. As a British military observer attached to the 24th Division observed in a wire dispatched on the morning of August 16, as Craig's brigade prepared for its new mission,

"The situation is critical, and Miryang may be lost. The enemy has driven a division-sized salient across the Naktong. More will cross the river tonight. If Miryang is lost...we will be faced with a withdrawal from Korea. I am heartened that the Marine brigade will move against the Naktong salient tomorrow. They are faced with impossible odds, and I have no valid reason to substantiate it, but I have the feeling they will halt the enemy....

"These Marines have the swagger, confidence, and hardness that must have been in Stonewall Jackson's Army of the Shenandoah. They remind me of the Coldstreams at Dunkirk. Upon this thin line of reasoning, I cling to the hope of victory."

When the Marines reached Miryang, however, they were dragging their heels rather than swaggering. To a man, they were drained, hungry, caked with dirt, and red-eyed from lack of sleep. Many of the troops had had to march most of the previous night after a promised convoy of trucks failed to show up, and the forced journey, after days of heavy fighting, had been an ordeal for everyone. "By that time," recalled PFC Ben Wray, a native Texan and a BAR man in the First Battalion's Second Platoon, "we looked and felt like an old horse that had been rode hard and put away wet."

During the withdrawal from near Sachon, the situation had been so hectic that Colonel Harold Roise, commanding the Second Battalion, received his only orders for the move scribbled on a scrap of paper. The terse message, written by Colonel Joe Stewart, Craig's operations officer, and left with a fleet of parked vehicles, read simply, "These are your trucks. Move to Naktong at once."

After all this, Miryang proved to be an unexpectedly pleasant surprise.

Compared to the sun-baked, unforgiving hills they'd just left, the picturesque village was the closest thing to paradise the Marines had seen since leaving the States. To Colonel Robert Taplett of 3/5, it looked like "a heavenly oasis" and "an ideal spot for a picnic," and Saturday Evening Post writer Harold H. Martin, embedded with the brigade, called it "the most beautiful bivouac in all Korea."

"Our bivouac area was in a cool grove of trees on the grassy banks of the Miryang River, which would soon be our bedroom, bathroom, and laundry," Taplett recalled. "Everyone looked forward to our first night of uninterrupted sleep, a dip in the river, a change of clothes, and our first hot meal since leaving the USS Pickaway."

After a dozen days of living and fighting in the same field dungarees, Taplett and his troops were, in his words, as dirty and smelly as "a herd of goats." They took to the river in droves while dozens of native women, recruited by unit supply officers and paid with wages of cigarettes, washed grimy Marine uniforms and laid them out on the riverbank to dry.

Medical officers tried to warn the Marines that the pristine-looking stream might harbor potentially dangerous contaminants, but the warnings were ignored. Even normally cautious Navy corpsman Herb Pearce joined in the splashfest. But, as he observed later, "My enjoyment of the swim was lessened somewhat when I got out of the stream and discovered that some Koreans were busily skinning a dog in the water just around the bend from us."

The Marines realized that their interlude of rest and rehabilitation would be brief and that another brutal ordeal loomed ahead. On August 16, barely twenty hours after their arrival at Miryang, they received orders to move west about twenty-four miles to the area of Yongsan, a village less than ten miles from the Naktong. This would be the jumping-off place for their attack.

Intelligence reports indicated that the enemy was almost ready to break out of his Naktong salient, seize Miryang, and split UN forces into northern and southern halves. Miryang lay astride the double-track railroad over which vital supplies flowed between Pusan and Taegu. If Communist forces gained control of the rail line or cut it, Taegu would be cut off from supply and reinforcement.

That night, Fifth Marines commander Colonel Ray Murray met with Colonel Harold Roise, whose Second Battalion had been chosen to lead a frontal assault the next morning on Obong-ni Ridge, part of a jumbled mass of high ground held in strength by the NKPA. Roise's battalion would be followed by Taplett's 3/5, with Colonel Newton's 1/5, which had been badly battered in the fight for Sachon, in brigade reserve.

"Obong-ni Ridge sprawled across the Marine front like some huge prehistoric reptile," wrote Marine historian Lynn Montross. "Its blunt head overlooked the main supply route...and the elongated body stretched to the southeast more than 2,000 yards before losing its identity in a complex of swamps and irregular hill formations."

The ridgeline included half a dozen dominating peaks (identified by number, from north to south, as Hills 102, 109, 117, 143, 147, and 153), several smaller hills, and a succession of steep spurs, separated by deep gullies that ran all the way down to a series of rice paddies on the plain below. It presented a vast, demonic puzzle for the men of the Second Battalion's D and E companies assigned as the first Marines to climb it.

"You must take that ground tomorrow," Murray told Roise. "You have to get on that ridge and hold it. Understood?"

The Dark Days of 1950

Bill Sloan has written another commendable story of combat. This time he covers the opening months of the Korean War when South Korea and especially the US were unprepared to repulse an invasion from the north. The signs were there but were ignored by MacArthur in Japan and by Washington. The author has chosen the first three months when the US was slowly coming up to speed, throwing in reinforcements piecemeal against the determined NKPA.

Before beginning his war coverage, the author describes how Truman and Johnson in the five years since WWII had gutted the Armed Services, especially the Marine Corps which was on life support. He goes on to depict the Army as poorly trained and equipped as well as low in morale. To make matters worse, the non confrontational ways of Acheson in regards to China and Soviet Union only encourage Stalin to help train and equip North Korea to invade the South.
Mr Sloan's battle coverage begins with the fall of Seoul and continues down the peninsula toward the important port of Pusan. In between Seoul and Pusan, you'll read about the battles for Suwon, Osan, Kum River, Taejon, Kumchon, Yongdong, Sanju, Sachon, Kosong, Obong-ni Ridge, Taegu and the Naktong River line, also called the Pusan Perimeter.
These were days when US Forces, both Gis and Marines, suffered heavy casualties and by August were almost pushed into the sea. In September there was a reversal when MacArthur landed at Inchon and within two weeks recaptured Seoul, saw the Pusan breakout and the full fledge retreat of the NKPA back to North Korea. MacArthur wasn't satisfied with regaining the 38th Parallel; he talked Truman into attacking the North with the objective of combining the two countries into one democratic one.

The battle coverage of the select engagements was good, descriptive. Using many sources including primary documents as well as interviewing 56 veterans, Mr Sloan was able to present many first hand experiences that added to the tactical details, giving greater depth to the book. The book closes with a brief summary of the rest of the war that includes UN forces invading the North, the Chinese counterattack, the dragged out negotiations as well as the present day circumstances. There is closing remarks on Truman and MacArthur as well as a discussion on whether the war had merit or if it is appreciated by the current generation.

Even though I really liked the book and eagerly recommend it, I couldn't give it five stars. The author provides too small of a window into the war, specializing too much which gives an incomplete view of the battle. I understand that was the author's intent but if this is the only book on the Korean War you read, you will have an incomplete picture of it. It can't compete with the full coverage books from Clay Blair, Bud Hannings and Roy Appleman. Secondly, there are only a few large scale maps of the peninsula. It would have been helpful to have a detailed map of each engagement covered; it certainly would have helped to follow the action. Also provided are photos and an extensive Notes section, Bibliography and Index.

Fast Paced Accurate Read

Bill Sloan again does an excellent job with his treatment of the first few months of the Korean War. There are many fine books out there that give the Army's view of the first disasterous months of the Forgotten War. Sloan justly gives them credit in his extensive notes(Blair's "The Forgotten War"; Fehrenbach's "This Kind of War"). Kudos to Mr Sloan for his written work on the First Marine Brigade's efforts to stem the tide and greatly backstop Walker's Eighth US Army. The action sequences and insertions of valorous deeds by young Marines do the Corps proud. This book is written in the same gritty factual fast paced style as Sloan's efforts describing the Okinawan campaign in "The Ultimate Battle."
As an Army veteran it always pains me greatly to read about the initial painful efforts of the US Army's attempts to halt the initial onrush of NKPA forces into South Korea. Sloan provides a succinct overview of those weak initial efforts and the causes that led to the post-war draft Army's weakened condition. The Marines as a fighting force have never been equaled and were much needed during this trying time. Sloan's book is an excellent example of the perils of unpreparedness by our nation for armed conflict, but also a shining example of the fighting spirit of volunteer forces who are aptly supplied and ably led.

Even if Laura Barnett's cool, blond, telegenic beauty is mostly due to plastic surgery, her decade of ambitious, small-town newscasting triumphs have blessed her with the coveted job of co-anchoring the national news. Add to this her perfectly dedicated academic husband David, her infant daughter Sophie, a tony Manhattan apartment, a nanny she can trust, and a salary large enough to make designer dresses a wiggle instead of a stretch, and it's a wonder that Barnett has a gripe. But whine she does: about no one appreciating her talent, hollowness of fame, and the tension of dealing with a glossy public image that she can't control. Then who should show up among her throng of stage-door admirers but the annoying Jack Pierce--a bony twerp in a seersucker suit who took the fall for what may have been a murder committed in self-defense by Barnett when she had a different face, different looks, and a different name. After pestering Barnett, he vanishes at about the same time as Barnett's daughter. I was very impressed by this book. A book has to have characters that hold you, and make you feel right along with them... this book certainly does the job. An excellent read for the book lover that doesn't want to put the book down.

I can't agree with the other reviews ***SPOILERS***

First of all, I never got to like the main character - Laura / Marta. She's a great mother but not all that likeable to other people. Once I found out what she had done in Florida, that was it. I felt no empathy for her whatsoever.

I'm still not clear on why Marta felt she had to resort to prostitution as a teenager. Was it for the money only? Was it because of her mother? Was it because of her stepfather? This was never fully explained.

And, with everything that happened with Laura and David while going through their crisis and what is going on with Laura regarding work once her secrets are out, there was no ending! What happened? The author could have at least done a few 'epilogue' pages to wrap up the story lines.

Sorry, but I was disappointed.

I love Melissa Anelli, and I always have. I read this book when it was released in 2008 and really enjoyed her perspective on certain highlights from the Harry Potter fandom. I think the heat this book gets is from readers who don't expect it to be from her perspective; however, that makes it all the more enjoyable for because I've followed Melissa since she started hosting PC. If you love the HP fandom, try this book!

Wonderful Insight into the Harry Potter Community

When I first saw this book, I was completely unintersted in it. I love Harry Potter, but I didn't much feel like reading about the culture surrounding it. However, when B & N put up their HP displays for the release of the 6th movie, I picked it up for some in-store reading. Immediately, there is a connection between you, the author, and anyone who has anticipated a Harry Potter release or even a page turn. Melissa Anelli is easily identified with in her book, and describes an adult's obsession with Harry Potter in a very relatable way. This book has fascinating insight, that really helps you appreciate the opportunity fans have had to read this wonderful series.

Definitely an interesting look at the Harry Potter "phenomenon." I especially enjoyed the info on the internet and fans. It was also great to feel that excitement of book release dates again. However, I had little to no interest in the chapter about wizard bands. The writing itself is at times confusing and it sometimes screams that this is the author's first book. I would have thought editors could have helped with that issue.

That's Love

Trista Russell delivers a hot, spicy, scandalous, and sex-devouring story that doesn't miss a beat to its predecessor. I thought Sarai's amnesia was a bit far-fetched, but the author amazingly conveyed it by making the story believable. This was a difficult task. The only upset was Damian not making a full-fledged cameo. It would have been great if Sarai had the opportunity to confront that man that almost killed her once her memory was regained. Cherry's and Charlize's twisted plotting should have put them both up for Academy Awards. I didn't care for the cheesy ending to this book. Sarai's whorish antics brushed off by Tramel. He told her it didn't matter...I respected him more when it did. Nonetheless Trista Russell writes with such genius, her books are completely unpredictable...even to the most seasoned reader.

Ms.Russell does it again!!

Sarai is back from her near death experience,after being shot by her ex boyfriend Damian. When she comes out of her ten month coma she can only remember what happened from that point. Tremel who was wrongly accused of shooting Sarai has now lost everything even the woman since she doesn't remember them having a relationship. They must build a new relationship and try to forget the horrible past yet remember the good thoughts. The book brings in people from Sarai's past who want revenge and even though they remember her she can't remember them making their plans even better. Not her best book but I gave it four stars and an extra star for all the Miami references since that's my hometown too! Can't wait for her next book!

Dead Broke...The Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Lose....

Sarai Emery is back. Only Sarai, she was shot by her man Damian. When she wakes up out of her coma, a huge chunk of her memory is missing. Sarai still thinks she is in love with Damian, not remembering what he did to her, she also doesn't remember what she did for money or her new love Tremel Colton.
Tremel is determined to stick by Sarai's side until she remembers him. In the meantime he moves in with a sexy new landlord and things get hot and heavy.
Sarai who is trying her best to peice her life together makes bad choice after bad choice. Sarai gets in some dangerous and freaky situations. Hopefully she will come to her senses and her memory will return before she is not only BROKE but dead!!!
