From the Author
If you've picked up this book, the chances are that you and I share two characteristics. First, we're both moms. This common identity suffuses our lives with much of their color and vibrancy. Despite the inevitable stresses, it's a primary source of our zest, our buoyancy, our resilience. Second, we both happen to be, for one reason or another, going it alone as parents. This is not a commentary on our parenting ability or potential for success, or even an implied negative. Based solely on your own private, highly personal experiences with this aspect of your parenting, though, the chances are that you can testify to an added dimension of pressure and complication moms working in tandem with supportive husbands might never suspect.
Our children, circumstances, temperaments, backgrounds, and outlooks vary as much as those of any moms. We struggle along on ADC or enjoy the advantages of a PHD, tread water to maintain a precarious living standard or float along with relative ease.
And the explanations for our singleness are fully as diverse. We range from divorcees (with varying custody arrangements); to widows; to never-married women who have entered motherhood through pregnancy, adoption, guardianship, or foster-parenting; to single grandmothers, aunts, or sisters bearing shared or sole responsibility for children. And the list goes on.
My number-one goal in this book is to relate to you as mom to mom. In so doing I've chosen to use observations and personal stories, both from my own childhood and from my experiences as mother and grandmother. Since I make no attempt to provide in these meditations a composite picture of me, I feel it only fair to explain myself briefly. I'm the single adoptive mother of three grown daughters: Amanda (husband Doug), Angela (ex-husband Walter), and Khristina. Walter maintains custody of his and Angie's three children: Walter Jr., Rebecca, and Tavis.
My experiences with parenting three "special needs" daughters have been interesting. I've made no attempt to be comprehensive in relating the details, inserting them only in snippets as they connect to the topic at hand. If the particulars of my anecdotes and examples don't apply to you personally, it's still my hope that our shared mom factor will provide the commonality we need for my thoughts to reach and touch you at a meaningful level.
I've provided a brief summary statement ("takeaway") at the end of each weekday's meditation--something to carry with you throughout your day, possibly during those otherwise idle moments while you're sitting in traffic or waiting to pick up a child. The Saturday material offers you an opportunity to "wrap up" the points you've internally packaged and pondered during the week: an invitation to review the five "takeaways," a chance to "tuck away" an additional encouraging verse related to each of them, and a "give away" for each day--a suggestion for how you might pass along insights from the week to other single mothers with whom you might cross paths.
God bless you, Mom!

The content seemed good, but I couldn't read it

The content seemed good, but I couldn't read it. The book looks like it was printed on a dot matrix printer that was running out of toner! Unbelievably bad. What a waste of resources.

Superficial Devotional, Poor Structure, Hard to Read Print
By Sara K. Fleagle
The book is very cheaply made and the print is difficult to read. I found many spelling and other grammatical errors in the devotional on just the first few pages. It seems to be heartfelt, but lacks substance. I also don't like that it is arranged Monday-Sunday, with a decotional on each day for 12 weeks. This forces you to start on Monday (which I did, even though I received the book on a Thursday and was anxious to begin then). The book is written by a single mom, but the arrangement and structure of the book is not good. Unfortunately, there's a lack of devotionals out there for single Christian moms. I would not recommend this, it is heartfelt but too superficial.

The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought to You by Pop Culture, by Nathan Rabin

Nathan Rabin viewed pop culture as a life-affirming form of escape throughout his childhood and adolescence. As an adult, pop culture became his life. Head writer for A.V. Club for more than a decade, Rabin uses specific books, songs, albums, films, and television shows as springboards for dissecting his Dickensian life story in his acclaimed memoir The Big Rewind.

Rabin writes movingly and hilariously about how pop culture helped save him from suicidal despair, institutionalization, and parental abandonment during a childhood that sent him ricocheting from a mental hospital to a foster home to a group home for emotionally disturbed adolescents. A fun book about depression, The Big Rewind is ultimately a touching narrative of a motherless child’s search for family and acceptance, and a darkly comic valentine to Rabin’s lovable, hard-luck dad.

With comic dissertations on everything from The Simpsons to The Great Gatsby, and from Grey Gardens to Dr. Dre, The Big Rewind chronicles Rabin’s improbable yet all-too-true journey through life, and its fortuitous intersections with the dizzyingly wonderful world of entertainment.

From Publishers Weekly
Rabin, a writer for the Onion's arts section, endured a dysfunctional childhood marked by parental abandonment, a stint in a mental hospital and an adolescence spent in a group home and a drug-ridden co-op house. And in this memoir, he views his life through the blurry lens of formative cultural influences. His episodic narrative recounts a sarcastic, insecure youth's gonzo misadventures with a cast of freaks, misfits and aloof or cruelly promiscuous girlfriends, then moves on to adult run-ins with air-sick celebrities, bored prostitutes and nutty Hollywood types. Convinced that cultural tastes reveal the soul, like a My Space page, Rabin opens each chapter with an earnest (though rarely incisive) appreciation of some favorite in a personal canon that ranges from rap albums to The Great Gatsby, and intrusively peppers his writing with pop culture references. There are, alas, limits to the evocative power of pop culture references, and the author's arcane allusions—Susanne and Jack's relationship was like a gender-switched version of the star-crossed duo in the Stephen Malkmus song 'Jenny and the Ess-Dog' —test them. Rabin's vigorous, smart-assed prose sometimes brings the sideshow vividly to life, but it's marred by self-conscious fanboyism and labored jokiness. (July)

Review
“[The Big Rewind is] written with [Rabin’s] trademark humor, quirkiness and self-deprecation. It’s an homage to pop culture." —USA Today

“Nathan Rabin had the kind of childhood that aspiring memoirists dream of.” —TimeOut New York

“With his uncanny grasp of cultural zeitgeist, Rabin could unseat Chuck Klosterman as the slacker generation’s vital critical voice.” —Heeb Magazine

Review
"Nathan Rabin's life reads like a fanboy's collision with Dostoyevsky. This hilarious, sad, truthful memoir is compulsively readable -- a page-turning soap opera about a child abandoned by his mother; loved by his wise, thrice-divorced, painfully crippled, often unemployed father; shuttled through foster homes and asylums; and yet with an invincible sense of humor that led him to contribute briefly to the original Onion in Madison, then leave over 'creative differences,' then rejoin the paper as a film critic for its A.V. Club for the last decade, and star on an AMC program named Movie Club with John Ridley with an optimistic dreamer as his producer and fellow critics who ranged from a darkly Marxist intellectual to a skinny blonde who used the word 'Shakespeare' as a condemnation, while surviving a romantic relationship with 'O,' a sadomasochistic intellectual grad student whose hyperactive sex life only occasionally involved him. He chronicles his adventures with a cross between utter shamelessness and painful honesty, and he is very funny."-- Roger Ebert

"I'm not as interested in anything as much as Nathan Rabin is interested in everything."-- Chuck Klosterman

"Rabin writes like the secret love child of Woody Allen and Lester Bangs: honest, erudite, neurotically manic, and very funny."-- Neal Pollack

"The Big Rewind is heartbreaking and hilarious. Based on the incidents in this book, it's amazing Nathan Rabin is still alive, much less one of the sharpest pop culture critics around. I just hope he's learned his lesson about dating loonball polyamorists."-- Rich Dahm, co-executive producer of The Colbert Report

"Nathan's memoir is your memoir is my memoir. You will experience moments of sour disagreement, followed by, 'Oh wow, me too!' A book that reads like a conversation. Terrific."-- Patton Oswalt

"Rabin begins each chapter dissecting some piece of pop ephemera and then shows how this work of film, music, or literature relates directly to a messed-up period of his life. Ultimately, underneath all of the quirky structure, mewling apathy, and caustic wit, Rabin tells a sweet tale of finding one's place in life. That he ends up using his love of popular driftwood as a catalyst for his reviewing career (and gets to meet celebrities!) is the frosting on the cake. Give this to fans of The Catcher in the Rye and Reservoir Dogs." -- Booklist

"[Rabin] has packed [The Big Rewind], like a cannon, full of caustic wit and bruised feelings. The result is a lo-fi, sometimes crude book that is nonetheless more effective (and affecting) than it has any right to be."-- The New York Times

"An edgy and funny memoir about a childhood that wasn't so amusing."-- The Boston Globe

Confessions Of A Culture Vulture
By Bill Slocum
[A Vine Review - Thanks, Amazon!]

Nathan Rabin may be a first-time author, but I know him well from reading his A.V. Club articles and the enormous discussion threads they spawn. His discursive, caustic, and quite funny writing style has a gift for transforming a long and pointless afternoon into something longer and just as pointless, only far more entertaining.

As a critic of today, Rabin's the kind of guy who can break anything down into popular entertainment references, so it almost makes sense that when he decided to tell the story of his life, he organized it into chapters referencing famous books, records, and films.

His stay as a boy in a mental institution? He's reminded of the book "Girl, Interrupted" - and careful to point out, not the later film adaptation.

Various relationships with girls are prompted with chapters spotlighting Rabin's takes on Rod Stewart and Jean-Luc Godard. Living in a hippie co-op in Madison, Wisconsin prompts a reference to "Freaks", the Tod Browning cult film. "My fellow co-opers were the stuff of Lou Reed songs," he explains.

Movies became for Rabin a channel of expression and a shelter from the storm: "Movies afforded the rewards of human interaction with none of the terrifying hazards of actual human contact," he writes. Real life has teeth, and Rabin often felt its bite.

I've seen this done before with songs alone, which do lend themselves to this kind of subjective treatment. Movies don't, and Rabin struggles to find the same connecting strands that come more easily from a song like "Maggie May". When Rabin uses "Apocalypse Now" as a basis for comparing a mildly domineering authority figure in Rabin's life to the terrifyingly unhinged Col. Kurtz from the film, it's a sign he's really pushing for significance.

More problematically, not every episode he writes about is as interesting to us as it is to him. There's three chapters alone on Rabin's brief, unsuccessful attempt at being a movie critic on TV, something he writes about with the minute, gory precision of the Starr Report.

When something does click, though, it often clicks hard, like his meeting the woman who gave birth to him, then left him alone for 20 years. When he meets her again, he finds her utterly unconcerned about the emotional damage she has left, and nutty enough for Rabin to realize he's grateful to have escaped her notice.

"Every Mother's Day I'm struck with an urge to send Biological Mother a card but I've yet to find one with a message like 'To a Mother Who's Disappointed Me in Every Conceivable Way.'"

"The Big Rewind" is hardly a disappointment of that order. It's structurally deficient, yes, but otherwise often engaging enough to read through quickly and wonder, if this was another A.V. Club posting, what the discussion thread would look like.

El Pollo Loco's Revenge
By Nick
What do El Pollo Loco, mental institutions, Siskel & Ebert, crazy moms in sweat pants, awesome music, long lists using commas instead of semicolons, and being Jewish have in common?

Nathan Rabin's The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought to You by Pop Culture.

I should stop there, but I won't. I don't read a lot of autobiographies since they're usually stuffy "look at what an amazing person I turned out to be, one that you envy and now live vicariously through, since you just spent $30 to read about me" memoirs by people that I don't care about.

I don't care about Nathan Rabin, either -- actually, we're basically best friends now, just like Nathan and Topher Grace -- but this book made me laugh so hard a few times that I had to wipe tears from my cheeks. The guy's had an amazingly sad and entertaining life. He writes about it in a honest and humorously self-depreciating manner that makes it easy to relate to his life and his personal failures and accomplishments, but mostly his failures.

I enjoyed that he ties each chapter of his life (figuratively and literally) in with a song/album and/or a classic book or movie. Being the same age as the author, I found myself suddenly being sucked back to various parts of my youth and remembering exactly what it felt like to be alive when, for example, Nirvana was first blowing up and ending abruptly or watching MTV as NWA helped rap start to veer away from raps about gold chains and women to raps about guns, drugs, and women...and gold chains.

The honesty and bluntness of Nathan Rabin's autobiography impressed me incredibly. There were times when I blushed, because at points I felt like I was reading stories from my own embarrassing encounters with women and other social situations. Some of the things he decided to include about his personal life were both touching and largely a lot more information than I needed to know about a stranger; in a very sincere way it helped to make his story one that's easy to find solace in as a recovering geek/nerd/self-conscious person. I'm not sure if that's the result he wanted or not.

I honestly didn't want to put the book down, but sleep and various tasks involving the use of both my hands made that impossible. Buy it. Seriously.

A Heartwarming Tale of triumph over adversity (TM)
By Kristine Lofgren
I didn't know anything about Nathan Rabin prior to picking up this book, and although I enjoy The Onion, I hadn't read anything that he had written there. But I love pop-culture, and I nabbed this book up based on the words "The Onion" and "Pop-culture" from the book's description. That's how easily swayed I am.

Having finished this book, I can safely say that now I know oodles about Nathan Rabin. Most importantly: that Rabin is a witty, engaging and highly amusing story-teller (and that he rarely agrees with the Oscars). From the first page, this book had me hooked. Weaving a story from Rabin's turbulent youth, through the triumphant bonding with his father over Chipotle coupons and landing firmly in an Ebert and Roeper audition, (all tied up a with pop-culture touchstone bow) I couldn't put it down.

This book is dark, sarcastic and incredibly, intelligently funny. It is safe to say that anyone who enjoys The Onion, grew up with Nirvana or simply likes their humor dark, whether you know Nathan Rabin or not, will love this book.

The Wettest County in the World: A Novel Based on a True Story, by Matt Bondurant

Based on the true story of Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two granduncles, The Wettest County in the World is a gripping tale of brotherhood, greed, and murder. The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Howard, the eldest brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; Forrest, the middle brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father's business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.
White mule, white lightning, firewater, popskull, wild cat, stump whiskey, or rotgut—whatever you called it, Franklin County was awash in moonshine in the 1920s. When Sherwood Anderson, the journalist and author of Winesburg, Ohio, was covering a story there, he christened it the “wettest county in the world.” In the twilight of his career, Anderson finds himself driving along dusty red roads trying to find the Bondurant brothers, piece together the clues linking them to “The Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy,” and break open the silence that shrouds Franklin County.
In vivid, muscular prose, Matt Bondurant brings these men—their dark deeds, their long silences, their deep desires—to life. His understanding of the passion, violence, and desperation at the center of this world is both heartbreaking and magnificent.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This fictionalized tale of Depression-era bootlegging from Bondurant (The Third Translation) enlists the help of Winesburg, Ohio author Sherwood Anderson to investigate Bondurant family lore. In 1928, a pair of thieves accost Bondurant's real life great-uncle Forrest at his Franklin County, Va., restaurant. They're after a large cache of bootlegging money and end up cutting Forrest's throat. The story of his survival and his trek to a hospital 12 miles away has taken on mythical proportions by the time Sherwood Anderson arrives in Franklin County in 1934 to research a magazine piece on the area's prolific moonshiners. Soon after Anderson's arrival, two anonymous men appear at the same hospital, one with legs meticulously shattered from ankle to hip, the other one castrated, with the by-products of the deed deposited in a jar of moonshine. The arc of the story lies between the attack on Forrest and that on the two men. Bondurant endows his gritty story with all the puzzle-solving satisfactions of a mystery. It's a gripping, relentless tale, delivered in no-nonsense prose. (Oct.) ""

From Booklist
This family saga follows the Bondurants, bootlegging brothers runnin’ stills, runnin’ loads, and runnin’ from the law in Depression-era Virginia. The book is mainly narrated through the experience of the youngest Bondurant, Jack (in truth, a grandfather of the author), and his family’s moonshine enterprise supplies the action in a plot that evokes the culture of distilling and distributing white lightning. To optimistic Jack, bootlegging is both a bond to his older brothers, Forrest and Howard, and a means to make cash to impress a girl. Forrest, by contrast, is taciturn and suspicious: the world is violent, and he meets it on that ground. Tender of the stills and imbiber from same, burly Howard is always ready to take on the Bondurants’ enemies, corrupt law officers. Wending through this conflict in flash-forward mode is novelist Sherwood Anderson, who plumbs the Bondurant story a few years after the brothers’ climactic confrontation with the county sheriff. Descriptively gritty and emotionally resonant, novelist Bondurant dramatically projects the poverty and danger at the heart of the old-time bootlegging life. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
"Bondurant tells a distinctively American story. The gritty, suspenseful narrative gripped me and wouldn't let me go. It also touched my heart in all the right ways. Matt Bondurant's writing is as full of beauty as it is of verve and grit. Thank God it's legal to write so well." -- Lee Martin, author of River of Heaven and The Bright Forever

"In his scintillating new novel, Matt Bondurant explores a crucial period in the history of Virginia and of his family. His gorgeous, precise prose brings to life an amazing cast of characters, including Sherwood Anderson, and the often deadly battles of Prohibition. The Wettest County in the World is a remarkably compelling, highly intelligent, and deeply moving novel." -- Margot Livesey, author of The House on Fortune Street and Eva Moves the Furniture

"Bondurant endows this gritty story with all the puzzle-solving satisfactions of a mystery. It's a gripping, relentless tale, delivered in no-nonsense prose." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Interweaving the bleak portraits of Walker Evans, the charged landscapes of Annie Dillard, and the breakneck plotting of Cormac McCarthy, Matt Bondurant mines his own family history to offer a novel that's both a gritty, fast-paced tale of bootleggers and car chases and a timeless hard-knock ballad, a myth fixed in the amber of one small community's imagination. The Wettest County in the World is a suspense story dashed to tintype smithereens, each one a jewel." -- Elis Avery, author of The Teahouse Fire

"Brilliantly conceived, and so close to home, this novel proves Matt Bondurant's burgeoning talent -- a book for thirsty American readers to guzzle down, a book for all young American writers to admire." -- Alan Cheuse, author of The Fires

"Bondurant writes fiercely and passionately. Severe violence, thrillingly rendered, pervades this book, which will remind readers of hard-hitting Southern writers such as Cormac McCarthy and Larry Brown. ....The story Bondurant has to tell is riveting, detailed and historical. His knowledge of Southern culture is as deep as his ancestors' knowledge of making whiskey. We are aware from the first page that we are in the hands of a remarkable storyteller." -- San Francisco Chronicle

"Bondurant is a nimble writer, especially when it comes to depicting gore and guts. His descriptions of the warped and wounded (a man lying in a hospital bed with "skin blanched like boiled meat; the bedding stained with a yellowish fluid" can leave a reader queasy, but the liveliness of his writing makes it hard for even the most lily-livered to look away.....Bondurant's prose is lyrical.......who can deny the power of a narrative so deeply rooted in childhood imaginings, when a mild and quiet grandfather hung those brass knuckles on the wall?" -- New York Times Book Review

Enticing, Graphic, Americana, and Utterly Brilliant
By Burgmicester
I am a sucker for good historic fiction and this is an excellent slice of Americana from the red clay dirt of Virginia: Franklin County, to be exact. The story starts in 1918 with the introduction of the Bondurant family and the trials of the day - the great influenza epidemic. From there the story jumps to 1934 (current timeframe) and then to and from 1928 as it brings the background into the story. This is done very nicely and the story is brought together from several angles using the real life reporter/writer - Sherwood Anderson (author of Winesburg, Ohio - now available from the Guttenberg Project public domain), as way to tell the story from the present tense. Anderson mentions that he has had run-ins with Hemmingway and Billy Faulkner - and as I read this story, I couldn't help but to see Bondurant's attempt at a similar style to Faulkner, but with an updated and more modern flair. The characterizations are rich and peeled back like an onion to reveal layer after layer of the main characters' history and development. The author also uses a technique that I haven't seen - there are no quotations to delineate the verbalizations between characters. Not unlike some of the masters of the past, Bondurant has established a writing persona - i.e. Faulkner's use of not identifying the character and making the reader use their own identification through the conversation.

Matt Bondurant calls this a work of fiction based on fact from his family's legend - thereby giving the reader a glimpse into the Bondurant family tree. The time frame are the years just before prohibition has been extinguished, and the moonshine business is in full swing in Franklin County with the Bondurant brothers thick in it. There is a little of everything in this book and the author concisely tells the tale in about 300 pages. But the story is not just told to the reader, it is described in terrific detail with sometimes graphic and sometimes beautiful prose. As you are grabbed by the story, it is nearly impossible to put down this book.

The author has researched his subject material very well indeed. His depiction of this era is superb and the wording paints the mural so well the reader is visualizing the entire surroundings. You are in Franklin County and watching the events, not reading them. This is a brilliant work and well worth the time to read it - and it won't take you long, as I just couldn't stop until it was finished.

This is a slice of time in America that we can only read about and Matt Bondurant is able to give us this period of time and allows us to leave our current life and live within this one. Often people will ask why I read so many books, and I'll say that with a good book, I can be transported into the story, into a time that I never saw, or into a place that I'll never visit; this is one of those books. This not just a good book; I rarely give out 5 stars, but Matt Bondurant has earned all five of them with this potential classic.

Great Material, Not So Great Presentation
By Aderyn
During Prohibition and beyond, Forrest, Howard, and Jack Bondurant (the author's great-uncles and grandfather) decided that one way to keep their families going through the worldwide Spanish flu epidemic, Prohibition, the Great Depression, and a crippling drought was to found a moonshine dynasty. The infamous Bondurant brothers were major bootleggers in Franklin County, Virginia, which Sherwood Anderson, covering a story there, called "the wettest county in the world."

Although the material that Bondurant has to work with reflects a fascinating period in America's history, I found his presentation of it somewhat dry (no pun intended!) and often confusing. He chooses to use a straightforward prose style that minimizes punctuation; for example, quotation marks are eliminated altogether and commas nearly so. This style can be intrusive even in the best writers' hands (Cormac McCarthy comes to mind). There is, after all, good reason why punctuation was standardized to begin with: Remember your primary teachers telling you that it is meant to help the reader? It's true, for this reader at least.

Also, the novel jumps around in time, from 1918 to 1934 to 1928 to 1929 and again to 1934, back to 1919 then to 1930, and so on. To a limited extent, this approach helps pique the reader's interest, as when, for instance, we meet two of the Bondurants' competitors in the hospital, appallingly mutilated, while in the reader's mind the Bondurants are still just simple farming folk. Because the timeframe moves so frequently and randomly, though, the reader finds himself often disoriented and struggling to piece together the story. I repeatedly had to flip back to check what year it was and work out whether some earlier event was part of the foundation for what was happening now or whether it hadn't occurred yet.

Sherwood Anderson serves as a sort-of narrator, staying in Franklin County to do research to write about what was happening there. For the most part, this helps the novel, bringing to it an unenlightened point of view that parallels the reader's own. However, the frequent references to Anderson's testy relationship with other authors of his time, the building of his new house, and other details of his life outside of Franklin County add needless minutiae for the reader to sort through and allocate to their places in the story; ultimately, they have none, and seem to be mostly just an English major showing off.

I had a difficult time getting to know and care about the book's characters, at least partly because of the effort it took just to follow their stories. It wasn't until nearly the end of the book that it began to matter to me how any of it turned out. One of the parts I liked best was the brief author's note at the end, because by then I finally knew everyone and was interested in what had become of them. I wish the author had made this happen much earlier.

Death in the Afternoon
By Best Of All
To dismiss the infamous Bondurant brothers as simply country bootleggers would be selling them short....and risking your life.

They had carved a nice living as moonshiners in Franklin County, Virginia, but that is not even half of the story. Each played a role in the criminal success story due to very unique personalities; Jack was always angling to strike it rich through a big score, Howard was a haunted veteran of World War I who enjoyed drinking the hard stuff as much as marketing it and Forrest was a tough as they came - he had a deep neck scar to prove it - once walking nearly 12 miles in the snow to receive medical assistance for a slit throat.

But when the trio refuses to pay "security" money to police, it leads to an even more wild ride in the turf wars where only the strongest could survive to fight another day, where the battles during the waning years of the Great Depression included shootings, knifings, beatings, shakedowns and brutal types of revenge that were fates worse than death for men.

Author Matt Bondurant chronicles these turbulent times of his grandfather and two granduncles in this novel that is based on the true story of their lives and the ripping apart of the veil that covered the lawlessness through a 1935 conspiracy trial which took down many players, but found journalist Sherwood Anderson chasing the shadows of the brothers to get to the heart of the story while attempting to break the county code of silence found within this vicious game.

Through dialogue and gripping scenes that are not for the faint of heart, Matt Bondurant brings to life an era where big city gangsters may have captured the national headlines, but these rural areas packed a gangland cruelty that was especially brutal. And that Matt Bondurant is talking about family makes this story even more compelling.

Prologue

Charleston, South Carolina, 1978

"Well, look what we have here. The prettiest little suspect in Charleston County." The fluorescent lights cast a sick, yellow shadow on the cheeks of the man who'd just entered the interrogation room.

Eileen Stafford straightened in the uncomfortable wooden chair and met his gaze. "Where's my lawyer?"

"He's comin', sweetheart. He's comin'. Mind if I sit down?" Across the table, he yanked out the other chair, flipped it around, and spread his legs around the back. "You remember me, don't you?"

As if she could forget the man who'd tried to blind her with a flashlight, cut her with handcuffs, and insult her from the front seat of his squad car.

She sat silent. Because anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

"We met the other night out on Ashley Bridge." He lifted thick black eyebrows and crinkled his forehead, all friendly and social.

She glared back at him. "Pretty convenient, you and your partner just cruising along looking for people driving away from crime scenes."

"Oh, now, honey, you know what happened. Someone saw you running and called the cops. While we were following you lead-footin' out of Charleston, Ms. Sloane's body was found." He held out his hands to imply that this happened all the time to a good cop.

Or a very bad one.

Didn't he realize this case was so flimsy you could see through it? She'd seen the murder; she'd witnessed it! She knew who did it, yet she sat here, sweating, waiting for a lawyer who was supposed to be here hours ago. When he came, she could tell him who pulled the trigger and who put that gun on the passenger seat of her car -- a gun she'd never touched.

But would she have the nerve to tell the truth? To take on the most powerful man in the county? The thought made her stomach roll.

"Why'd you do it, Miss Stafford?"

She bit her lip to keep from saying a word.

"It is miss, isn't it?" Hazel eyes dropped to her chest. "Sure it is. I've seen you around the courthouse. You're a flirty little thing. Real friendly with all the lawyers and judges. You're a legal secretary. Just like...the deceased."

"Which makes me smart enough to know I get a lawyer before I talk to anybody."

He chuckled, propping his elbows on the table and locking his hands into a little shelf for his chin. "And smart enough to know that the South Carolina legal system don't always work as right as it should."

She fought a quiver, unwilling to let him see her fear. "I'm not going to talk to you, Officer."

"Then how 'bout you listen to me...Leenie."

Oh, God -- only one person on earth called her that. Which meant whatever this cop was about to say was a direct message from him.

"Listen real careful, okay?" His look made her heart wallop against her ribs. "I'm gonna offer you a fine deal."

"A deal?" Or her worst nightmare? The man who had destroyed her happiness, forcing her to make a decision she would regret until the day she died -- that man could do anything. He could lie, cheat, steal, and, oh, Godamighty, he could kill.

"Real simple, this deal. You tell your lawyer exactly how you killed Wanda, how you were hidin' right there in that alley, just waitin' to pounce on the gal who'd taken your place as the prettiest legal secretary in the courthouse, and -- "

"I wasn't waiting for -- "

" -- and we'll make sure you don't have to sit in the hot seat." One corner of his thin-lipped mouth slid up. "You know what I mean by the hot seat, don't you, Leenie?"

"There hasn't been an electrocution in this state since 1962."

"Capital punishment is alive and well in the state of South Carolina, darlin'. In the hands of" -- he bared straight, shiny teeth -- "the right judge."

Eileen closed her eyes. She'd known this was coming. Ever since she'd hidden behind that brick wall in Philadelphia Alley and watched her former lover put a bullet into Wanda Sloane, she'd known she couldn't run far, and she couldn't hide for long. Not from him.

"It's a simple deal. You tell the lawyer just what happened, Leenie. And in exchange..." He shrugged, as if the rest were obvious.

"Say it," she insisted hoarsely. "You have to say it."

He leaned close. "Sign the piece of paper pleading guilty... and nothing will happen to your baby."

She knew it.

"I don't have a baby."

That statement would be the truth in a deposition. She didn't have a baby. She'd had three. But he didn't know that. No one in Charleston knew that.

"You have a child," he said in a patronizing tone. "'Course, you sold the poor li'l fatherless bastard. But anyone can be..." He took out a handkerchief, blew his nose, let the unfinished sentence hang in the air. "... found with the right people pulling the strings."

She stared at him.

He folded his hanky and stuffed it into a breast pocket. "And you know, sweetheart, those black-market babies are not always the healthiest. They've been known to just die in their li'l cribs."

That murdering, lying son of a bitch. Would he kill his own daughter?

Of course he would. He was capable of anything. He bought cops like this sleazebucket, bought juries, bought witnesses, bought loyalty. Hell, he'd bought her.

But he only knew she'd gone to the farmhouse on Sapphire Trail to have a baby. No one except the nurse, the lady who owned the place, and one of the sets of adoptive parents knew she'd had triplets that night eight months ago.

Three tiny, helpless baby girls who were all sold to strangers. He only knew of one, but she didn't know which one. Any of those tiny babies could be his victim, unless she...

"Make this deal." Impatience edged his voice. "Or she dies."

Right now, her daughters were safe and loved. And marked. If they ever found one another, would that tell them the story of what their mother did and why? All that mattered was that they lived. Her life was worthless without them, anyway.

"Okay," she said in defeat.

He pushed away from the table and sauntered to the door with a lazy, cocky grin. "I heard you were a very smart girl, Leenie. Guess it's true." He pulled the door open, and she heard him say, "The suspect is ready to bargain."

Eileen dropped her head into her hands. Maybe someday, her babies would forgive her for selling them to strangers. And if they ever discovered who gave them birth, maybe they'd understand why, eight months after they were born, she'd shouldered the blame for a crime she didn't commit.

Roxanne St. Claire wows us again!
By L. R. Shook
THEN YOU HIDE by Roxanne St. Claire is the second in the "Bullet Catchers Trilogy." Able to stand alone, you won't want to put down this story of suspense, intrigue, murder and of course a fantastic love story. Once again Ms. St. Claire wows us with her prose, keeping us on the edge of our seats until we've turned the final page.

Wade Cordell isn't really a Bullet Catcher - at least not yet. So far he has worked only contract jobs for them but now they want him to be a permanent part of the team. But Wade is just not sure that is what he wants to do with his life. While he's making up his mind he takes an assignment that lands him in the Caribbean. It is supposed to be more vacation than work. It seemed simple, find Vanessa and bring her back to meet her birth mother. He finds out fast enough that this is no vacation.

Vanessa Porter is looking for her best friend. He disappeared a month earlier and her gut is telling her that something is definitely wrong. She takes a vacation from her high-powered job with a investment firm and tries to follow his path. The only friend she's had in years she won't stop searching for Clive until she finds him. Even if a hunk who qualifies as an "11" on her scale tries to stop her!

The sparks fly between these two from their first meeting and you'll be as hot as the Caribbean sun while waiting for these two to finally get together. And boy when they do, I'm surprised the pages weren't smokin'.

Ms. St. Claire has another winner here! The story is gripping and drags you through the beautiful Caribbean on a deadly chase and a race against time. I loved FIRST YOU RUN but THEN YOU HIDE blew me away. The story is excellent and the sex is scorching. Trust me you will want to take this book and hide so you can finish it in one sitting as I did. Excellent job Ms. St. Claire, I am waiting with bated breath for the next book in this dynamic trilogy.

SUN, SURF, SEX AND SUSPENSE - NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER!
By KATHLEEN IRENE PATERKA
Sun, surf, sex and suspense - Bravo! Fans of Roxanne St. Claire will surely applaud her latest read - THEN YOU HIDE - proving once again she's Queen of Suspense. The second in her trilogy of Bullet Catcher adventures is guaranteed to keep you reading through the night for the ultimate "who-done-it" conclusion. Vanessa Porter, a 31 year old Wall Street high flyer, is in the Caribbean, but not to take advantage of the sunshine. She's on a mission to track down her colleague and best friend, who mysteriously disappeared while on vacation. Meanwhile, Bullet Catcher Wade Cordell is on a mission of his own. He's been assigned to track Vanessa down. Seems Vanessa is the only chance in helping solve a thirty year old mystery and save a woman's life - a convicted murderer who happens to be her birth mother. Ms. St. Claire treats her readers to 349 pages of a wild ride in the Caribbean sunshine with this latest Bullet Catcher adventure! Be sure and watch for the last book of the trilogy - NOW YOU DIE (available September 2008). Mine is already on order.

Even Better Than All The Rest
By Romance Fan
I'm a fan of the Bullet Catchers, and this book was, in my opinion, the best of a really good series. This time, the author paired a hard-edged heroine with some real pain in her past and a super sexy gentleman hero who actually believes in commitment. I loved these two together! The story takes place in the Caribbean Islands, and starts off with action and never lets up. The plot twists come fast and furious from the beginning to the end. Like the first book in the trilogy, the Bullet Catchers want to find the daughter of a woman in jail who needs a bone marrow transplant to live. And that's where the similarity to the first book in the trilogy ends - this story is completely stand alone (something readers will like, I think, so they don't have to read the first one, but it's good, too) and these two characters go on an entirely different kind of adventure. The sex is steamy, the bad guy was a total surprise and there are a couple of secondary characters that are unforgettable. I can't wait for the last book in the trilogy - and it's out in August. I love Lucy!

Without Fidel: A Death Foretold in Miami, Havana and Washington, by Ann Louise Bardach

From the award-winning reporter and go-to source on Cuban-Miami politics Ann Louise Bardach comes a riveting, eye-opening account of the last chapter in the life of Fidel Castro: his near death and marathon finale, his enemies and their fifty-year failed battle to eliminate him, and the carefully planned succession and early reign of his brother Raúl.

Ann Louise Bardach offers a spellbinding chronicle of the Havana-Washington political showdown, drawing on nearly two decades of reporting and countless interviews with everyone from the Comandante himself, his co-ruler and brother Raúl, and other family members, to ordinary Cubans as well as officials and politicos in Miami, Havana, and Washington. The result is an unforgettable dual portrait of Fidel and Raúl Castro—arguably the most successful and enduring political brother team in history.

Since 1959, Fidel Castro has been the supreme leader of Cuba, deftly checkmating his foes, both from within and abroad; confronting eleven American presidents; and outfoxing dozens of assassination attempts, vanquished only by collapsing health.

As night descends on Castro's extraordinary fifty-year reign, Miami, Havana, and Washington are abuzz with anxious questions: What led to the lightning-bolt purge of key Cuban officials in March 2009? Who will be Raúl's heir? Will the U.S. embargo end?

Bardach offers profound and surprising answers to these questions as she meticulously chronicles Castro's protracted farewell and assesses his transformative impact on the world stage and the complex legacy that will long outlive him. She reports from three distinct vantage points: In Miami, where more than one million Cubans have fled, she interviews scores of exiles including Castro's would-be assassins Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles; in Washington, DC, she reports on the Obama administration's struggle to formulate a post-Castro strategy; in Havana she permeates the bubble around the fiercely private and officially retired Castro to ascertain the extent of his undisclosed medical condition.

Bardach delivers a compelling meditation on one of the most controversial, combative, and charismatic rulers in history. Without Fidel includes never-before-published reporting on Castro, his family, and his half-century grip on the largest country in the Caribbean while assessing how his departure will forever transform politics and policy in the Western Hemisphere—and the world.

Excellent Information, unbiased account
By S. Reed
Ms. Bardach's knowledge of Cuba and Fidel is unsurpassed. She presents a reporter's view: unbiased and crisp information exposing a failed system run by a prideful dictator who refuses to let go. She makes the point that all of the players are getting too old for this, it is time to move on. Everyone should read this book, particularly younger generations of Cubans on both sides of the water that want to connect with lost family, culture and history.

The flawed arguments that continue to lead to Cuba-USA detente.
By Kevin M Quigg
This is a great analysis of why Cuba and the USA have not mended fences. The US has reached out to former enemies in the Soviet Union, Red China, North Korea, and even Vietnam. They have relations with these nations, even though there is distrust. The Cuban regime is a different matter. 20% of the Cubans have emigrated out of Cuba and form a resolute block on making common cause with the Communist regime in Havanna. These aging Cuban Americans have prevented a foreign policy reapproachment with Cuba.

Two have to tangle in this deceit, and Fidel Castro has still wielded the nationalist bat against the American "Empire". He continues to stir up trouble, even though his country is shattered economically. Fidel will not live forever, but his rage against America continues to influence the policy of his brother Raul.

The author has written a down the middle review of what troubles Cuba-American relations. Both sides have to give to receive. In the process of giving, there could be real economic and political changes in Cuba. However, the Fidelistas need to give up the government, and the Cuban American community has to overturn these rotten laws Washington has enacted.

I felt this is a needed book of reform for both Washington and Havanna. Change can help heal the rift in Cuban American relations.

The best journalist to write about Cuba, period
By John Radanovich
Forget the ranting/tiresome political stances and how they polarize discussion of Cuban affairs--on either side of the argument, and both sides of the Florida Straits as well as both sides of the Atlantic. Ann Bardach's research and writing about current realities and ancient historical disputes over Cuba are unmatched by any American (and probably all European writers on the topic as well). I've followed her writing for years, and have known the inside edge of these issues, too. From what I know of her examination of Cuban issues (not what I *believe* is any bias she would have), I can say without hesitation that Ms Bardach has no ax to grind whatsoever. She is the old-school journalist who cares only for uncovering a story, confirming sources, and then carefully reporting the truth without any bias for politics.

BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes, by Shirley O. Corriher

Great day in the morning, BakeWise is out! You are holding the book that everyone has been waiting for. Sure enough, Shirley did not hold back—it's all here. Lively and fascinating, BakeWise reads like a mystery novel as we follow sleuth Shirley while she solves everything from why cakes and muffins can be dry to génoise deflation and why the cookie crumbles.

With her years of experience from big-pot cooking for 140 teenage boys and her classic French culinary training to her work as a research biochemist at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Shirley manages to put two and two together in unique and exciting ways. Some information is straight out of Shirley's wildly connecting brain cells. She describes useful techniques, such as brushing puff pastry with ice water—not just brushing off the flour—making the puff pastry easier to roll. The result? Higher, lighter, and flakier pastry. And you won't find these recipes anywhere else, not even on the Internet. She can help you make moist cakes; flaky pie crusts; shrink-proof perfect meringues that won't leak but still cut like a dream; big, crisp cream puffs; amazing French pastries; light génoise; and crusty, incredibly flavorful, open-textured French breads, such as baguettes and fougasses.

There is simply no one like Shirley Corriher. People everywhere recognize her from her TV appearances on the Food Network and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with Snoop Dogg as her fry chef.

Restaurant chefs and culinary students know her from their grease-splattered copies of CookWise, an encyclopedic work that has saved them from many a cooking disaster. With numerous “At-a-Glance” charts, BakeWise gives busy people information for quick problem solving. BakeWise also includes Shirley's “What This Recipe Shows” in every recipe. This section is science and culinary information that can apply to hundreds of recipes, not just the one in which it appears.

For years, food editors and writers have kept CookWise, Shirley's previous book, right by their computers. Now that spot they've been holding for BakeWise can be filled.

BakeWise does not have just a single source of knowledge; Shirley loves reading the works of chefs and other good cooks and shares their information with you, too. She applies not only her expertise but that of the many artisans she admires, such as famous French pastry chefs Gaston Lenôtre and Chef Roland Mesnier, the White House executive pastry chef for twenty-five years; Bruce Healy, author of Mastering the Art of French Pastry; and Bonnie Wagner, Shirley's daughter-inlaw's mother. Shirley also retrieves "lost arts" from experts of the past such as Monroe Boston Strause, the pie master of 1930s America. For one dish, she may give you techniques from three or four different chefs plus her own touch ofscience—“better baking through chemistry.” She adds facts about the right temperature, the right mixing speed, and the right mixing time for the absolutely most stable egg foam, so you can create a light-as-air génoise every time.

BakeWise is for everyone. Some will read it for the adventure of problem solving with Shirley. Beginners can cook from it and know exactly what they are doing and why. Experienced bakers find out why the techniques they use work and also uncover amazing French pastries out of the past, such as Pont Neuf (a creation of puff pastry, pâte à choux, and pastry cream in honor of the Paris bridge) and Religieuses, adorable “little nuns” made of puff pastry filled with a satiny chocolate pastry cream and drizzled with mocha icing to form a nun's habit.

Some will want it simply for the recipes—incredibly moist whipped cream pound cake made with heavy cream whipped slightly beyond the soft-peak stage and folded into the batter; flourless fruit soufflés (puréed fruit and Italian meringue); Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, rolled first in granulated sugar and then in confectioners' sugar for a crunchy black-and-snow-white surface with a gooey, fudgy center. And Shirley's popovers are huge.

From Publishers Weekly
It's not surprising that James Beard Award-winner Corriher (CookWise) once worked as a chemist. Her no-nonsense approach to cakes, muffins, breads and cookies shows her deep knowledge and understanding that baking is, above all things, a science. This hefty collection of more than 200 recipes offers amateur and expert bakers alike clear, numbered steps and a plethora of information on ingredients, equipment and method. Invaluable troubleshooting sections solve pesky problems on everything from pale and crumbly cookies to fallen soufflés. With a sense of expertise and ease, the author showcases recipes from the basic (cherry pie, fudgy brownies, baguettes) to the more specialized Bordeaux Macadamia Crust and Bourbon Pecan Oatmeal Cookies, focusing on the reasons for each step (e.g., "using shortening limits the cookie's spread"). Astute references to a variety of chefs, cookbook authors and restaurants add a knowing punch to this solid collection that's sure to please bakers of all skill levels.

Disappointing followup to Cookwise
By Joseph Adler
Shirley O Corriher is one of the best known food scientists in the world. She's a frequent guest on "Good Eats," and is often consulted by professional chefs. Her first book, Cookwise: The Secrets of Cooking Revealed is one of my favorite cookbooks. Alton Brown said about this book "Finally, Moses has come down the mountain with another five commandments." With this history and pedigree, I expected great things from this book (and ordered it months ago). It would be difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to live up to these expectations. Sadly, this book does not.

There are many things to like about this book. It is a very detailed book, and provides a lot of background about each recipe. It's well organized, with chapters devoted to Cakes, Puff Pastry, Pies, Cookies, and Breads. And it provides a lot of good information about baking: how to tell if a recipe will work, what purpose different ingredients serve, useful and novel techniques. However, this is not a very good book of recipes.

After getting this book, I plunged right in, making her recipe for "Blueberry and Cream Muffins." The recipe promised moist, delicious muffins. They were really delicious, but the texture was oily and gummy. I tried the recipe a second time, carefully measuring every item, checking my oven temperature with a thermometer, and made a second batch. The second batch was slightly better, but was still greasy and gummy. I was surprised; how could the queen of food science provide recipes that don't work? I sat down and started reading the book from the beginning. At last, I realized what was wrong.

This book reads more like a set of magazine articles, or a good blog, than a cookbook. You can't just pick a recipe out of the middle of this book and expect it to work. The recipes in this book are examples of different techniques (like the muffin recipe), not well-tested, authoritative recipes (like in The New Best Recipe: All-New Edition). Shirley gives you the formulas that make recipes successful (ratios of flour, eggs, fat, sugars, and liquids), then often pushes the boundaries of this formulas to show what happens. A good example of this are the pound cake recipes. On page 15 "So that you can see that changes that I made, I have included the original recipe for The Great American Pound Cake; but do not bake it." The problem with this warning is that you'd never see it if you just flipped to the recipe for "The Great American Pound Cake," and would end up with a sunken, soggy cake. If you buy this book, make sure to read the whole thing before you bake anything.

The problem with this approach is that she has produced a book of temperamental, difficult recipes. The recipes are very sensitive to ingredients, techniques, and equipment. (For example, I use organic grade AA pastured eggs, which contain much more fat and protein and lower moisture than the grade A supermarket eggs that she recommends.) The results can be interesting, but they may not produce something that you want to eat. An additional problem with this book is that it reflects Shirley's own taste in flavors and textures. As noted above, she likes the texture of oily baked goods (I do not).

One final problem with this book is that she appears to have developed the recipes based on volume measurements for flour, but later converted these to weights. There are multiple recipes that specify weird weights of flour (like 3.2 ounces), leading me to believe that the recipes were developed with volume measurements and later converted to weights. As many experienced bakers know, the same mass of flour can take up very different amounts of space depending on how much it is aerated. I believe that many recipes in this book do not actually contain the correct amounts of flour.

I would recommend this cookbook to the serious baker or food science buff, but not the beginning cook. A better food-science related cookbook for the beginner would be Alton Brown's baking book I'm Just Here for More Food: Food x Mixing + Heat = Baking.

not for the faint of heart
By Seven Kitties
First, two tiny gripes: One, the photography. To keep this book from an astronomical price, it only has a single 8 page color photo insert, which means out of the 'two hundred magnificent recipes' you only get to get a visual on sixteen. And they're photographed at extreme macro levels against a chic stark background, which isn't helpful. Is that cream puff really the size of my head?

Second, several times she'll give a recipe with a kind of caveat, like Pop Corriher's Applesauce Cake. The idea is that she made it, didn't like it, and then sets about to 'fix' it, taking the reader along on the journey. Not only does this cut into the *new* recipes she could be offering, it sometimes seems kinda mean. I've decided if Shirley Corriher ever asks me for a recipe, say no, because she's going to savage it in her next book.

One of her fixes she explores in the poundcake section is, for example, different varieties of fats one can use in a cake--oil, butter, shortening, whipped cream, etc. She ultimately decides on a combination of fats and the addition of potato granules to the cake. Her explanation is sound, but this kind of cooking comes from the kitchen of someone who has minions to do all sorts of scut work for her--what I call the Many Little Bowls School of Cooking. Not likely to see me whipping that one up for a little snack for my coworkers!

But, and this is what is irreplaceable about this book for the hard core baker: I'm sure that that poundcake will be phenomenally good. Her discussion of the science behind baking is fascinating to read, and I started thinking about the structure of cakes a whole new way (I learned why, for example, my cookies and biscuits turned out so different after I left the South--turns out it was the protein content in the flour!). You learn about baking powder--not only what it is, but how the different chemical composition of different brands could make or break your baking. You learn about when to add eggs to a recipe, how to fix your cookies from spreading into one big glob and a host of other things you can apply even to your own, less persnickety recipes to make them stand out.

A valuable resource(the brownies, which I made just for *me*, with four different sweeteners, two kinds of chocolate and seven separated eggs--see what I mean about persnickety?!--are delicious) but the recipes may strike one as unnecessarily difficult. The interleaved information, never more than a few paragraphs at a time, makes it an adventure whenever you open the book.

Extraordinary!
By Tracy Rowan
At the risk of hyperbole, I must say that this is an extraordinary cookbook. Because precision is more important to baking than any other type of cooking, many books will give you a fast-and-dirty introduction to the basics. Corriher's introduction is no exception to this rule, but her introduction is a very nuts-and-bolts one, with tips on how ovens work, and similar information. It's within the chapters that things get really interesting.

Bakewise is divided up into chapters on cakes, and cake-like baking (muffins, quickbreads, etc.) puff pastry, pies, cookies and breads. At the beginning of each chapter you have a section that gives you an overview of what you will learn by making the recipes contained in it. For example, the cake chapter will teach you: "How to create your own perfect cakes," "How to spot cakes that won't work and how to fix them," "How to make cakes, muffins and quick breads more moist," "Even if you have never baked, how to ice a cake as spotlessly smooth as glass and looking as if it came from an elegant professional baker," and more. Recipes are then broken down into types, such as "Favorites" or "Elegant cakes." Finally there are the recipes, and here Corriher really goes to town.

She leads off with a classic, or very basic recipe, one which we all know, and probably have tried to make in the past. She discusses it, the theories and techniques behind it, and may even show you the process by which the recipe has been perfected. At the head of the recipe is a box that tells you what the recipe will show you. For example, the pound cake recipe which leads off the cake chapter will show you how excess sugar and butter will make this cake moister than a traditional pound cake, and explain why it's important to blend the flavoring with the fat (Fat is a flavor carrier.) or why you must always be sure to mix well so that there won't be any holes in your cake.

Finally you get to the recipe, and they are precise down to the last pinch of salt. Many include recipes for icing or filling or variations. Some, such as "Shirley's Version of Pop Corriher's Applesauce Cake" are the focus of a lesson on things like fixing over-leavened recipes which can lead to cakes which fall and become heavy. She discusses leavening thoroughly, how to read a label to find out what's in your leavener, how to make your own, and finally shows you how she fixed her father's cake recipe to ensure perfect results. She anticipates problems that can and will arise during baking, gives examples of recipes which could create those problems, shows how she fixed the recipes, and gives the reader a very good working knowledge which can then be applied to recipes from other sources.

You're getting an education with this book, not just a collection of recipes. Armed with what you learn from Corriher's recipes, you can go confidently to other sources, and be sure that you have the ability to create wonderful baked goods, no matter what. You can probably even create your own recipes after working with this book. Really, if you're at all serious about your baking, I cannot recommend a better book on it.
