Paula Deen's Savannah Style, by Paula Deen

With its lush gardens, stately town houses, and sprawling plantations, Savannah is the epitome of old Southern style, and who better to give you the grand tour than Paula Deen, the city’s most famous resident and anointed Queen of Southern Cuisine?

In this gorgeous, richly illustrated book, Paula Deen shares a full year of Southern living. Whether it’s time to put out your best china and make a real fuss, or you’re just gathering for some sweet tea on the porch at dusk, Savannah style is about making folks feel welcome in your home. With the help of decorator and stylist Brandon Branch, you’ll learn how to bring a bit of Southern charm into homes from Minnesota to Mississippi. For each season, there are tips on decorating and entertaining. In the spring, you’ll learn how to make the most of your outdoor spaces, spruce up your porch, and make your garden inviting. In the summer, things get more casual with a dock party. Sleeping spaces, including, of course, the sleeping porch, are the focal point of this chapter. In the fall, cooler weather brings a return to more formal entertaining in the dining room, and in the winter, attention returns to the hearth, as Paula and her neighbors put out their best silver and show you how they celebrate the holidays.

Paula loves getting a peek at her neighbors’ parlors, so she’s included photographs of some of Savannah’s grandest homes. From the vast grounds of Lebanon Plantation to the whimsically restored cottages on Tybee Island, you’ll see the unique blend of old-world elegance and laid-back hospitality that charmed Paula the moment she arrived from Albany, Georgia, with nothing but two hundred dollars and a pair of mouths to feed. And she isn’t shy about giving you a window into her own world, either. From her farmhouse kitchen to her luxurious powder room, you’ll see how Paula lives when she’s not in front of the camera.

Packed with advice and nostalgia, Paula Deen’s Savannah Style makes it easy to bring gracious Southern living to homes north and south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

From Publishers Weekly
The Food Network queen of buttery Southern fare departs from publishing cookbooks to present—with help from Branch, her personal assistant and creative director—a photo-laden guide (photos by Deborah Whitlaw Llewelyn) to her style of home decorating. Like Deen's food, the decor she highlights is welcoming and comfortable, and often over-the-top (music rooms complete with harps and grand pianos; oversized crystal chandeliers). She covers plenty of topics applicable to many readers, such as porch livin', the practical use of slipcovers, and collecting. There's not a house in Savannah that doesn't lovingly display a collection of plates, pottery, canes, ceramics, crafts, or anything that takes our fancy, she explains. The frequent Brandon's Style Secrets sidebars scarcely offer secrets, but they do contain nuggets of fun and time-tested wisdom: For your [holiday] flowers, use several tiny bunches instead of one big expensive arrangement. You will get the same look for less money. Though reading Deen's accent (nothin'; havin'; fixin') isn't as charming as hearing it, the prose is friendly, and the volume offers a warm invitation to those who want a peek at how Deen and her fellow Savannahans live. Savannah tour
By wogan
This is a book for either fans of Savannah or of Paula Deen or luscious pictures of rooms that would fit into the southern lifestyle with porches and entertaining. It is really a small `coffee table' book.

It has no recipes, so do not expect them.
The book is divided into 4 seasons, although what passes for winter in much of the rest of the country is not applicable to Georgia where it is relatively snowless. Paula introduces some rooms in her home and some of her furniture designs in different houses around Savannah. There are hints from Brandon Branch her assistant and designer. There is also a source guide.
If you are buying this book by mail just be sure that it is what you want - about 200 pages of pictures of rooms and furniture and accessories and how to live the good life of Savannah.

Eye Candy!!
By Melinda
I got this book for myself for Mother's day (Ok so that was the excuse I used to spend the money!) and I am so glad I did! This is the kind of book you want to read with a pen and a pad of sticky notes handy. I made notes, flagged pictures, and found several good inspirations for making my own home more "gracious" and inviting!

To begin with, I just love Paula! I am dying to be invited to a dinner party at her place! (Paula - call me!) I love her family, her spirit, her food, her guts, and her style. This book bubbles over with all of it!

Visit the South, no matter where you live!
By A. Pohren
Paula Deen, a household name, has an infectious and brilliant smile that dares anyone not to smile back and become wrapped up in her Southern hospitality. Ms. Deen's flare and talent for delicious food has delighted people and brought homestyle and unforgettable meals to tables all over the country. Now, with her newest book Savannah Style, people are brought into the world so dear to Paula Deen, as she invites readers and fans into the cozy and homey decorating style of the South. With gorgeous photos and neighborly narration, this is a book sure to delight those looking for inspiration to decorating or those looking to escape into the beautiful world of the South.

Divided into sections by Seasons, readers will delight in such topics as "Porch Livin'", "Courtyard Gardens" and "Wicker" in the Spring; "Eat-in Kitchens", "Sleeping Porches" and "Family Memories" in the Summer; "Comfort Rooms", "Book Nooks" and "Powder Rooms" in Autumn, as well as "Holiday Decorating", "Live-in Kitchens" and "Cozy Bedrooms" in the Winter. Keep in mind that this is a very small example of areas covered within Savannah Style. Interspersed throughout the book are "Brandon's Style Secrets", which are incredibly informative and will help spark even the most novice of decorator with ideas galore. One of my favorite areas was the "Sleeping Porche". I adored the photos and the idea of this was just the neatest. Of course, as a huge book and library lover, the section titled "Book Nooks" was delightful for me as well. There are so many aspects and areas that I loved about Savannah Style that this is truly a treasure to revisit again and again.

Sit back in a comfy chair, grab a tall, cold glass of sweet tea and settle in to a tour of sweet southern bliss, with Paula Deen's Savannah Style.

From Publishers Weekly
In their history the Boston Celtics have hung 16 NBA championship banners from the roof of their home arena, the last won by the 1985-86 team. The team ended the 1984-85 season by losing the seventh game of the final series, and those in charge felt the loss was a result of the weak bench, thus forcing the five starters to play too many minutes. So, in an unprecedented move, management got rid of all the bench players and restocked the team, their major acquisition being backup center Bill Walton. He joined Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson to form a team that went 67-15, with a 40-1 record at home, and, of course, won the championship. May, who covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe, makes a convincing case here for judging the team the best in NBA history, not so much for the talents of its players, which were considerable, but because of the dedication to teamwork and the lack of ego of the players. This careful analysis of the season is also a thorough portrait of each of the team members going back to childhood. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Whether the 1985-86 Boston Celtics were the greatest NBA team of all time is certainly debatable, but there is little doubt they were the best of a long line of outstanding Celtic squads. May (The Big Three, S. & S., 1994) argues here that although Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Dennis Johnson, and Danny Ainge formed a potent starting five, it was the bench, led by Bill Walton, that lifted the team to championship status. As for the team's place in history, he contends "they played at a time when the competition was never better and the game was not yet contaminated by the ravages of expansion." How such a surfeit of talent came to be assembled and blended in a cohesive unit makes for an interesting study. For popular collections.?William H. Hoffman, Ft. Myers-Lee Cty. P.L., Fla.

From Booklist
What was the greatest basketball team ever? Though many sports fans may opt for the team of the moment, many seem to settle on the 1985^-86 Boston Celtics. May, who covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe, re-creates that decade-old season from the point at which the team--fresh off a non-championship season--decided to retool its bench. The frontcourt, with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, was Hall-of-Fame bound, and the Dennis Johnson^-Danny Ainge backcourt was the equal of any in the league. But there was no bench. The best aspect of the book is May's detailed account of the machinations the team went through to rebuild their bench with the acquisitions of Bill Walton and Jerry Sichting. Once the pieces were in place, the Celts blew through the regular season and the playoffs on their way to a league record sixteenth championship. Injuries and age kept the team from recapturing the magic, but for that one season . . . Excellent reading for NBA fans. Wes Lukowsky

WELL WRITTEN

THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE AND DOWN TO EARTH BOOK. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT DOES A GOOD JOB GOING THROUGH THIS EXCITING SEASON WITH THE CELTICS LAST CHAMPIONSHIP. IT DOESN'T WASTE TIME AND STAYS ON TARGET ALL THE WAY. A GOOD INSIGHT ON MANY OF THE PLAYERS. ALSO A GOOD BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT HOW SOME TRADES WERE MADE. ABOVE ALL I ENJOYED HOW EACH MEMBER WAS BROUGHT TO THE TEAM AND HOW EACH CONTRIBUTED TO THE ULTIMATE GOAL. A VERY GOOD READ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An incredibly courageous project, and a correct thesis!!!
By A Customer
I consider myself among the top handful of 1980s Celtic votaries, and as a former college basketball player from the 80s and student of the history of the NBA, this book was one of the most thrilling publications to which I have ever been exposed. I have a tape collection that includes about 35 of the 100 playoff and regular season games the 86 Celtics played, and I have maintained for years that this is the greatest team to ever grace a basketball court. After living through so many painful Bulls championsips, capped by that revolting, 72-10 1996 season and all of the associated "Best Ever" pronouncements, I would, and still do, argue to friends and foes alike that the best teams of all-time were situated in the mid-1980s. The very best among the best, I argue, were the 85-86 Boston Celtics. Seeing May's book for the first time was like finding a beautiful resting place amidst a turbulent, seemingly endless sea of hostile waters, which, under this analogy, took the form of publications, paraphernalia, and television broadcasts extolling Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O'Neal, the Chicago Bulls, and the current NBA in all its shocking ineptitude and lack of substance.
The reading is wonderful, and the memories the reading inspires are gratifying, especially when supplemented with the 86 Celtic game tapes I so greatly treasure. In short, May's book brings to life a much better era for the basketball purist, an era whose chief exponents, the 80s Lakers and Celtics, were represented at their pinnacle--by no matter of coincidence, the pinnacle of the sport of basketball itself--by the 85-86 Boston Celtics. Peter May, this is a breakthrough book that needs elaboration: perhaps a more thoroughgoing, analytical piece devoted to comparing the 80s NBA champions to their 90s counterparts, advancing the thesis that the 80s champions were the better teams.
I would like to meet Peter May and express my appreciation to him directly for his wonderful project. I would also like to be! the individual charged with the duty of writing the successor, analytical piece discussed above. A great book about a team for the ages. Thank you, Mr. May.

Fun to relive the great season
By Chris
Peter May's book about the 1985-86 Celtics is a great way for Celtics fans to experience the franchise's greatest season for a second time.

I was only 9 years old during that basketball season, meaning it was the first Boston sports championship I could really comprehend. I have vivid memories of watching those playoff games with my parents -- the Ralph Sampson fight with Jerry Sichting, the stunning home dominance, Bill Walton's impact off the bench, etc.

But it was great, years later, when I was old enough to fully appreciate what that team had accomplished, to get a view from the inside. May has covered the Celtics for a long time, and he told some great anecdotes while presenting the season in a nice narrative. Because basketball teams only have 12-15 players, I felt like I knew them all when I finished the book.

It's hard for me to say how a casual NBA fan, or a non-Celtics fan, would feel about this book. It's a book about one season and very little else; there are no cultural issues or prolonged looks into NBA history. But readers will learn more than what they got from watching the Celtics that season. It's not a classic by any means, but Celtics fans over the age of 30 would love it, and those under 30 will enjoy getting a closer look at the superstars -- including the original Big Three -- their parents have spoken so highly about for so many years.

The Perfect Mate

Deb and I had flown into Raleigh, North Carolina, to do one of our Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage seminars. Usually during my weekend events I speak for up to six hours or more, so if I am not careful I can overwork my voice. In preparation for an event, I try to limit my jabbering and generally turn down any requests to meet with people, do interviews, and so on. However, the Friday morning before the start of the Raleigh event, my good friend and host pastor, Steve Coronna, asked if I would join him and his wife Connie on the set of their TV program, Making Your Marriage Work. My reluctance to do three television programs on the day of a seminar was mitigated only by my friendship with Steve.

The plan was to leave the hotel at 9:15 a.m. and drive to the studio to meet them. I am not exactly a morning kind of guy, and being true to form, I slept in as late as possible and began to shower and get dressed only at the last possible minute. After I shaved and combed what hair I have left, I went to get a fresh pair of underwear out of my suitcase. However, I could not find any. Since I am a typical man and unable to find something even if it's right under my nose, I did not panic, but simply called out to my wife, who was now in the bathroom.

"Hey, Debbie, where are my underwear?"

"They're right there in the front of your suitcase," she answered.

"No," I retorted. "I looked. There's nothing there."

Exasperated, Debbie shot out from the bathroom to the suitcase to try and find what I had obviously missed. After a few moments, however, she started to giggle and said, "Well, I guess we didn't pack any."

Didn't pack any?! I started to panic. No underwear?! My mind began to race: I have people to meet; television shows to tape! I don't have time to deal with, 'I guess we didn't pack any.'

Perhaps yesterday's undies, I thought, switching from panic to resolution mode. A little gross, but it seemed like a plausible plan at the time. Then I realized my drawers were lying wet on the bathroom floor and there was no time to dry them out. I had to go now if I was going to be on time.

Only two options lay before me: a) go au naturel with no restraints -- freely, as it were; or b) do the unthinkable -- wear my wife's underwear. As I pondered the options, a pair of my wife's undies caught my eye. They were made of simple cotton, and, were it not for "Victoria's Secret" stamped all over the elastic band, they almost looked like a pair of men's skivvies.

Dare I? I mused.

Now, every man I have ever shared this story with has told me they would have chosen option "a," and never option "b," even under threat of death or bodily harm. For most men, wearing women's underwear is not an option -- there are way too many conflicting implications. But I just could not see spending my day underwearless. I can't handle that much freedom in my life. I would have found it extremely distracting.

So, option "b" it was. I quickly slipped on my wife's undies, finished getting dressed, and headed out the door, giving what I had just done very little thought.

About five miles down the road, it started to dawn on me that I was sitting in a pair of underwear that had "Victoria's Secret" imprinted over and over again on the waistband. I thought to myself, Good grief! What if I'm in an accident? I imagined myself lying on the side of the road while the medics tried to remove my pants to save my life. I saw myself fighting them off, screaming at the top of my lungs, "Let me die! Let me die!"

Soon I was at my destination, and I tried to focus on taping the programs to be aired over the next three weeks. You can imagine the irony I felt as I looked into the camera and threw out a challenge for the men in the audience to be real men, not the all-too-familiar men who live in a virtual world of TV, video games, and computer porn -- yet all the while I was sitting in a pair of women's underwear! It was a struggle to concentrate on what I was saying.

After the taping, while we were waiting to be seated for lunch, I could hold my secret no longer. I leaned over to Steve and Connie and told them I had a confession to make. Few things get people's attention like an open confession, so they gathered close to me as I whispered the events of that morning. When I finally got to the part where I revealed I was standing there with them in a pair of my wife's underwear, which I had been wearing all morning, Steve screamed and tried to get as far away from me as possible. (Did I mention guys have issues with this kind of thing?) He continued with lunch only as long as I agreed not to touch him. He also asked me to never mention his name when telling this story. (But, hey, what are friends for?)

The Moral of the Story

I reveal this self-deprecating story to illustrate a point. If you are going to survive unexpected circumstances and disappointments, you are going to have to be willing to change, to adjust, to work with what you have, and to commit to doing things you normally wouldn't have chosen to do. Despite our best efforts and intentions, life doesn't always turn out the way we have hoped and planned. This is especially true when it comes to relationships between men and women.

Love can be deceitful. It starts out so easily. In fact, it is the ease of the relationship that convinces us that the other person is "the one." We are so comfortable with them. They are incredibly easy to talk to. We can just be ourselves around them. With seemingly no effort at all, we experience a sense of joy just by being around them.

"It is so easy," we reason, "this person must be the one!"

"Yes," your romance-starved heart answers, "this is it -- true love is always easy!"

So we take the plunge, we make the big commitment, we promise, "Till death do us part." And we know it's right because it's easy. Easy is always a sign from God that things are right. Right?

But after the "I do's" have been exchanged, life kicks in. And guess what? It ain't easy.

Men and women begin their journey believing that fate has caused them to meet each other, and then they date and end up at the altar. They think that since they have spent so much quality time with each other, they truly know each other. They know what to expect and, therefore, feel the relationship is safe -- they have discovered the perfect one. However, due to the intoxicating nature of the dating process, people don't know each other nearly as well as they think.

So when life hits, shock and awe set in. Shock because the differences that attracted them to each other now repel them. Awe because they are now frustrated and angry and feel that their whole marriage is simply awful.

We read in the Old Testament, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick." Simply stated, when things don't go the way you hoped they would, it is easy to get "heart sick" -- to lose your oomph, to want to quit and get away from what disappointed you. But that is a mistake.

The truth is that such lofty ideals of romantic perfection actually work to make people's marriages worse, not better. Since these ideals are rarely if ever realized, dissatisfaction rules the day. You were smoking marital ganja if you expected marriage to be a life filled with constant waves of joy, where every morning birds sing you awake and little bunnies help you sweep the floors as the chipmunks wash the dishes.

It may be a hard pill to swallow, but it doesn't take the ladies long to discover that -- though they were worshiped and coddled like beautiful princesses during the dating experience, and though they married the guy expecting to step into a long life of being the object of worship and coddling -- it doesn't last. Generally, women end up feeling as if they are the property of the Pumpkin Eater (who, according to Mother Goose, has his little woman neatly tucked away in his pumpkin shell, there to keep her very well). Women discover that their Prince Charming is more pauper than prince, and the man of her dreams morphs into looking more like the monster from her nightmares.

Similarly, men get disappointed and offended, but only by the idea that we could ever disappoint a woman. "How can this be?" men reason. "Our moms always said we were perfect." And we guys hate to lose the "Prince Charming" label. The problem is that we can't begin to comprehend why being married would take anywhere near the energy dating did. We have won the girl. The girl said "yes." The boy said "I do." Everything seems set, so we assume we can now begin to redirect our attentions, formerly used to chase our bride-to-be, to new pursuits. There are new hills to climb, new wars to win, new seas to cross, and of course, video games to play. Sadly, many men think "I do" means "I'm done." This is because we generally approach relationships with a conquer-and-possess mind-set. And once men possess, we are ready to move on to new ground.

In a way, what we possess "disappears," kind of the way a new car disappears after we own it for six months, and we often cease to give those we love significant attention. We don't do it to be cruel, we just don't get why we would keep fighting and striving to secure something we already have. Sadly, the romantic chase of courtship gives way to the thoughtlessness, inconsiderate behavior, and even rude assumption of ownership. (I'm not saying this is right or that it has to stay this way, it just is for the average guy.) Our shock and awe in marriage have to do with the discovery that our wives no longer think we are the cat's meow. After all, we are men, the bearers of the magic that accompanies our gender -- endowed to us by the male penis.

Ah, wretched disappointment -- it makes us sick. And when marriages are filled with disappointed wives and offended men, it do...

My husband and I have been married for 32 years and have been to 6 marriage counselors and have read (me 8, him 2) at least 8 self help/marriage type books over those years. We were invited to go to a comedy show with a couple who had been given extra tickets. It was at a church and thought, "It must be a Christian comedian." We had no problem with that because we were Christians. We sat there the first 2 hours and laughed our butts off at realistic things men and women do. Then Mark stated, "Thank you for coming and we'll see you for the next session tomorrow at 10am." My husband and I looked at each other, puzzled and said, "We're in a married seminar!!!" We decided to come back, in which it still had much humor but more in depth - but the humor lighten our ability to hear the more in-depth stuff in the coming sessions. At the end of seminar Mark has you stand to face each other and look at each other in the eyes without taking them off (very hard to do with past hurts) and repeat after him - loving statements that broke down years of bitterness. Tears began to flow as we hadn't done that in many years, maybe only when we were exchanging vows and felt like we were exchanging vows all over again with eyes to see.

Of all the counselors and books we read, nothing has been so restorative and healing as this seminar. There is nothing like humor to pass through the walls of bitterness so easily and is more seen in the seminars than in the book or even the DVD of the seminars, as it doesn't show the entire seminar - but there are also details in the book that weren't in the seminar.

What Marks approach taught me more than anything is, I walked away with knowing how men think with a big, "Oh! so that's why you respond the way you do," instead of my usual thinking of my husbands lack of desire to communicate and understanding needs. My husband came away with understanding women's communication better and was not so threatened by my over communicating to him that made him feel inadequate. You learn that women (multi-taskers) have a brain that sees everything (kids, school, finances, work, sex, friends, parents, chores, past hurts, etc. all in one big room) and men have, what Marks calls, boxes in there brain. Each box has all the things mentioned in my brain, but theirs is separate and don't touch each other(with the mother-in-law box way, way in the back - ha) - AND one specific box that men love the most - THE NOTHING BOX (a place to escape all their responsibilities, - TV, newspapers, etc.). In others words, when I talk to my husband about all the things I listed at one time, he is overwhelmed and can't respond (in the way I would like). It works better to take out one box at a time and fully communicate about it. So, if I want to talk to him about problems with the kids - that's all we talk about (without accusations of what he is not doing) until coming to a conclusion and a plan. We take a break for 20 min.- hour or a day(s) then open up another box of specific issues. This has helped tremendously.

Some reviewers state this book is simplistic (and it is), but I like to think of it as - if you never really had a good grasp of simple math (multiplication, fractions, algebra) and find yourself struggling with calculus, to be tutored in calculus alone may take a long time to understand concepts - but if you go back and get the fundamentals of math down pat, you can progress through more difficult math easier. I wish I would have known the fundamentals about how women and men communicate before getting married. Would have saved many years of hell knowing how to not push the wrong buttons or say the wrong things that hurt and how to motivate - and I read "Men are from Mars and women from Venus," but this book states some of the same precepts with simplicity to understand better.

I get dis-heartened with reviews that take a specific tree out of the forest (A specific view of the author on one point) to say THAT tree doesn't meet my needs and make the whole book (forest) a reflection of that one tree (does that make sense?). None of us have absolute truth and are on different levels with different needs. If it doesn't speak to you personally.......move on to something that does. This book could help many couples that may turn it away due to negative (not objective) review. I understand we live in a free country with the right to our opinion, but wish we could do this without taking out a very small section of a subject, to reflect it not being as good as we think it should be and not recommending it or tearing it down - or not even finishing the book, seminar or DVD series before reviewing it without trying it. (Not all negative reviews did this). It's like your child stating, "I hate that food," in which you ask, "Have you ever tasted it?" "No," "Then how do you know?"

For instance - I read reviews that made me ask, "How did they get that out of this book?" But as I said, "We're all in a different place."

QUOTE FROM REVIEWER: (this one is from a reviewer stating they are only half way through the book and DVD series) "For example, he talks about how women multitask and men "just can't multitask" and, according to him, that's why the wife finds herself simultaneously making dinner/checking homework/unloading the dishwasher and setting the table/answering the phone/packing the kids up for soccer while the man reads the newspaper. His solution -- accept that your husband can't multitask!"

RESPONSE: This is not a fully accurate overall view with many statements being a humorous poke, by the author - AND most (not all) men aren't multi-taskers. They may be able to do it for a day or a week, but would be exhausted at the thought of this being their everyday life. And I'm not stating that men can't do more than one thing at a time - they can, but it is usually on one subject (box) as they can handle many different aspects of their job, but not be thinking about grocery shopping and what to cook tonight, picking up the kids, did the trash get taken out on trash day, is a friend upset with me, etc (you know what I mean), their focus is on the job box. As mentioned above, men don't see all those things to be done, or don't see a need to get it all right and done all at once (multi-tasking) and will retreat into their "nothing box," but Mark doesn't leave it there - He gives you advice on how to get your husband to help (not nagging or saying nothing - being the martyr, but positive reinforcement, appreciation, respect), as us women WILL take on all that multi-tasking, wearing ourselves out and getting bitter because he sits there reading the newspaper not seeing you need help. He thinks, "If she doesn't require me to help, I'd rather escape to my nothing box (Newspaper, tv, etc.). So, REQUIRE IT with a reward of appreciation - not a demand only, etc (Don't we all want that) and he will help more often. He also advises husbands to respect, appreciate and to help (for most husbands and men - a way to have a more fulfilling sex life, stating that foreplay is an all day thing, helping your wife not be exhausted at the end of the day). Too long to go into.

Another review states she came away with feeling all the responsibility was on the women. I read the book as 60% of the responsibility fell on the man. Yes, much adjusting of communication falls on the women because she is born to see all things that need help, nurture and TALK, and if she understands how to communicate properly, the man will get on board and be responsible for much, if he wants to be happy (and doesn't happen over night if you have years of nagging and him not listening, to overcome). Nothing new here in the book, just stated in way that is more easy to grasp - But I think it is a very good book to start with on relational problems for both men and women because it hits the core of how men and women think so you can have a clue how to communicate and make each person feel valued and loved. It has to start there before you can work on hard sensitive issues.

Never give up on marriage (that's not highly abusive). It is very blessed when you can overcome or move past issues and we all have them.

Should be required reading for all couples!
By E. Schmidt
I preordered this book directly from "Laugh Your Way America," and have been reading it for the past few days. I was married for nearly 22 years, and was widowed last year. I'm in a new relationship now, and this book looked like a good resource for getting a better understanding of what it takes to be a successful, happy couple (it doesn't always happen naturally). This book is insightful, witty, and really does explain some of the basic differences between men and women. If you want a better understanding of the opposite sex and how those differences can affect relationships, this is THE book for you!

Thank you, Mr. Gungor!

By Someone's Mom
We're doing the series in a group at my church and currently we're about halfway through the video and discussion series. Here's my problem with the book/course: I'd estimate that about half of the couples doing the program kind of want to 'tweak' a marriage which is rusty, and occasionally problematic, while the other half of us showed up wanting to fix a marriage which at times feels desperate -- you know, the "go days without speaking to each other, how the heck did I ever end up with you in the first place, is that all there is to life" situation. "Laughing your way" is pretty good for helping the first group, but pretty darned near useless for the second group. In other words, there's a pretty big difference between being pissed off at your hubby because he leaves the toilet seat up and being pissed off at your hubby because he hates your children who also happen to be his stepchildren. Obviously, fixing the first situation is significantly easier than fixing the second.

My husband hates the series. The word he keeps using is "simplistic" -- it's all that Mars vs. Venus stuff which most of us already know anyway, and the series doesn't go deep enough in terms of actually identifying resentments, nor is it biblical despite the fact that it's used at many churches.

And at the risk of getting all "shrewy feminist a la Kate gosselin or Hilary Clinton or something", I sometimes find that he tends to emphasize altering behaviors over actually looking at the situation and thinking about whether or not it is actually unjust or inequitable. For example, he talks about how women multitask and men "just can't multitask" and, according to him, that's why the wife finds herself simultaneously making dinner/checking homework/unloading the dishwasher and setting the table/answering the phone/packing the kids up for soccer while the man reads the newspaper. His solution -- accept that your husband can't multitask! However, that still leaves the problem of the fact that there are six tasks that need doing and the woman is frequently doing five of them to the man's one. See? There it is again. He never addresses the underlying resentment issue.

Also, he seems kind of fixated on sex as the solution to many marital problems, basically stating that if people are kind to each other and therefore they end up having more sex, then their marriage will improve. On some level, it's a bit condescending -- suggesting that women who've been married twenty years have no idea what men are like or vice versa. I'd argue that this is kind of the "bridges of madison county" of marraige books -- simplistic, feel good, and if you've never read a book before, you might like it. But then again, you might have lower expectations than some of the serious readers or connoisseurs of self-help books. YMMV.

Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan, by Doug Stanton

From the New York Times bestselling author of In Harm's Way comes a true-life story of American soldiers overcoming great odds to achieve a stunning military victory.

Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators, and overjoyed Afghans thronged the streets. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn. During a surrender of six hundred Taliban troops, the Horse Soldiers were ambushed. Dangerously outnumbered, they fought for their lives in the city's immense fortress, Qala-i-Janghi, or the House of War. At risk were the military gains of the entire campaign: if the soldiers perished or were captured, the effort to defeat the Taliban might be doomed.

As the Americans struggled to hold the fortress, they faced some of the most intense urban warfare of our time. But until now the full story of the Horse Soldiers has never been told. Doug Stanton received unprecedented cooperation from the U.S. Army's Special Forces soldiers and Special Operations helicopter pilots, as well as access to voluminous after-battle reports. In addition, he interviewed more than one hundred participants and walked every inch of the climactic battleground.

This exciting story is filled with unforgettable characters: brave Special Forces soldiers, tough CIA operatives, cunning Afghan warlords, anxious stateside soldiers' wives who do not know where their husbands have gone, and humble Afghan boys spying on the Taliban.

Deeply researched and beautifully written, Stanton's account of America's quest to liberate an oppressed people touches the mythic. The Horse Soldiers combined ancient strategies of cavalry warfare with twenty-first-century aerial bombardment technology to perform a seemingly impossible feat. Moreover, their careful effort to win the hearts of local townspeople and avoid civilian casualties proved a valuable lesson for America's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan.

Horse Soldiers is a big-hearted and thrilling read, with an epic story that reaches not just across the cold mountains of Afghanistan but into the homes of small-town America, and confirms Doug Stanton as one of our country's preeminent storytellers.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this absolutely riveting account, full of horror and raw courage, journalist Stanton (In Harm's Way) recreates the miseries and triumphs of specially trained mounted U.S. soldiers, deployed in the war-ravaged Afghanistan mountains to fight alongside the Northern Alliance-thousands of rag-tag Afghans who fought themselves to exhaustion or death-against the Taliban. The U.S. contingent, almost to a man, had never ridden horses-especially not these "shaggy and thin-legged, and short... descendents of the beasts Genghis Khan had ridden out of Uzbekistan"-but that was not the only obstacle: rattling helicopters, outdated maps, questionable air support and insufficient food also played their parts. Stanton brings each soldier and situation to vivid life: "Bennett suddenly belted out: 'It just keeps getting better and better!' Here they were, living on fried sheep and filtered ditchwater...calling in ops-guided bombs on bunkers built of mud and wood scrap, surrounded by Taliban fighters." In less than three months, this handful of troops secured a city in which a fort had been taken over by Taliban prisoners, a tangle of firefights and mayhem that became a seminal battle and, in Stanton's prose, a considerable epic: "Dead and dying men and wounded horses had littered the courtyard, a twitching choir that brayed and moaned in the rough, knee-high grass."

Review
"Doug Stanton's Horse Soldiers is as gripping as the most intricately plotted thriller. It is a masterwork of stunning military action, brilliant in-depth journalism, and powerful storytelling. Finally Americans can know how just a few dozen courageous U.S. soldiers beat the Taliban under the most extreme and dangerous conditions imaginable. I could not put this book down." -- Vince Flynn

"Horse Soldiers is a great read -- a riveting story of the brave and resourceful American warriors who rode into Afghanistan after 9/11 and waged war against Al Qaeda. We're hearing many of these stories for the first time -- and from those who waged a war worthy of Rudyard Kipling, James Bond, and Davy Crockett." -- Tom Brokaw

"Doug Stanton's Horse Soldiers is the story of the first large American unconventional warfare operation since World War II. My Green Berets were launched deep into enemy territory to befriend, recruit, equip, advise, and lead their Afghan counterparts to attack the Taliban. The Horse Soldiers succeeded brilliantly with a highly decentralized campaign, reinforced with modern airpower's precision weapons, forcing the Taliban government's collapse in a few months. Doug Stanton captures the gritty realities of the campaign as no other can." -- Geoffrey C. Lambert, major general (retired), U.S. Army, and commanding general of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne), 2001-2003

"Not just an epic war story, Horse Soldiers is a beautifully written, intimate portrait of the men and women who lived the battle on the fields of fire -- and at home, too. Their secret mission against the Taliban was intelligent, brave, and undertaken with great care for the good people of Afghanistan. Doug Stanton's superb account is an invaluable insight for policy makers and the public for years to come." -- Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea

"In the spirit of Black Hawk Down and Flags of Our Fathers, Doug Stanton plunges into the heart of a single mission and returns with a stark understanding not only of what happened but what was truly at stake. Through precise reportage and hauntingly rendered battle scenes, Stanton shows that we may ignore this 'forgotten' theater only at our own peril." -- Hampton Sides, author of Ghost Soldiers and Blood and Thunder

"Spellbinding...action packed prose. [Stanton's] gritty narrative is thoroughly researched and the details of military operations jarringly precise...The book reads more like a novel than a military history...the Horse Soldier's secret mission remains the U.S. military's finest moment in what has since arguably been a muddled war." -- USA Today

"Stanton packs a huge amount of research into a thrilling action-ride of a book... deserves a hallowed place in American military history...." -- Bruce Barcott, cover of The New York Times Book Review

"Horse Soldiers reads like a cross between an old-fashioned Western and a modern spy thriller." -- Parade Magazine

"Stanton has captured the inner workings of... Special Forces operations. A thorough recounting of the events told from the soldiers' point of view." -- Veritas, Journal of Special Operations History

Excitement personified
By Charles G. Irvine
Mr Stanton has created a fascinating narrative of the exploits of the US Special Forces in what was prewar Afghanistan.
The book title refers to the fact that our US SF needed to mount horses in order to stay with the Northern Alliance tribesmen they were helping to drive out the Taliban. Many of them had never before been on a horse. Really tough duty, especially on makeshift wooden saddles. The SF people are introduced by name, and you are given their bios, leading to the reader becoming intimate with all of them. A most interesting approach to telling the story.
I highly recommend this book.

a stunning account - The Charge of the 9/11 Brigade
By wogan
I was given this book by a friend, so I looked at it and immediately - sat down, started reading and finished it almost one sitting. Horse Soldiers is the impressive story of the US Special Forces team sent into Afghanistan after 9/11 to capture Mazar-I-Sharif. So the first action against terrorists of the 21st century winds up conducted on horse back, more accurately a cavalry charge much like Mosby's raiders during the Civil War. There is action, pathos and even a bit of humor as a group of Special Forces men who had only, for the most part ridden horses in summer camp ride into battle. There was so much that was captivating, I found myself stopping to read passages out loud to my husband.
If I was still teaching current history this would be on the reading list, and I know it would be well received. I will be surprised to not see this book become a movie, its tale is gripping and fascinating. The men in this story will make you proud of our service men, their bravery, courage and at the same time you will be intrigued and awed by the skill and methods of our modern military.
As one who grew up in the army and have always been near those whose hearts and souls are given to protect us - this is a stunning account that reaches the best of a story teller's writing, except this is true and will make those who read it, aware of, and thankful for the skill and bravery that is written of in this book .

An epic tale brilliantly told
By Joe Mielke
Horse Soldiers will take readers from the freezing interior of a high tech Chinook helicopter flying higher than it safely can through the mountains of Afghanistan delivering soldiers to desert gun fights fought on horse back harkening America's old west. It's a modern day Odessy written with a journalist's penchant for detail and Homer's gift for telling a warrior's story.

In the end it is also the harrowing tale of how a small group of American Special Forces and the CIA working with Afghan soldiers managed to defeat the Taliban in one of the world's remotest battlefields.

It's not a book about politics. Stanton sets out to tell what happened, how it happened and who it happened to. He does this with startling attention to detail and a an objective overview of U.S. Military actions.

At one point American bombers can't seem to hit a target whether the bombs are guided by Global Positioning System coordinates or LASERs. Near the end of the book they drop a bomb on some of their own men.

But it is Stanton's ability to weave a story that brings the book alive and takes readers to places they would rather not be to hear things they would rather not hear and to see things they would rather not see and to smell things they would rather not smell.

The story is told in a narrative fashion sometimes switching between Afghan battle and a spouse battling her emotions about whether her husband will come back home. And, although this switching back and forth fills in interesting background, it's a technique more akin to screen writing than book writing. It makes it harder for readers to keep track of what's happening to whom.

There are unusual moments as when Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld actually calls and asks why the soldiers aren't making enough progress and one of Special Forces officers writes a reply that Rumsfeld reads from during a press conference describing the miserable conditions and bravery of the Afghan fighters.

Stanton writes about the complexity of flying a helicopter under extreme conditions; cold, wind and extreme altitude like this: "You had essentially flown to the dead end of a physics equation."

Stanton relied on more than 100 books, articles and web sites and an equal number of interviews in writing this well documented book. He also traveled to Afghanistan to flesh out details and to see the fort where one of the major battles took place.

The book appeals to general readers seeking a good story well told as well as to those with an interest in history and the military. It also is a testament to the effectiveness of soldier-philiosphers who can outthink their enemies and think with their allies before they start shooting.

Amazon.com Review
It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible).

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.

Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humor from Langdon, and a little less bombastic philosophizing on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but my! It's tasty. --Kelly Flynn

From Publishers Weekly
Pitting scientific terrorists against the cardinals of Vatican City, this well-plotted if over-the-top thriller is crammed with Vatican intrigue and high-tech drama. Robert Langdon, a Harvard specialist on religious symbolism, is called in by a Swiss research lab when Dr. Vetra, the scientist who discovered antimatter, is found murdered with the cryptic word "Illuminati" branded on his chest. These Iluminati were a group of Renaissance scientists, including Galileo, who met secretly in Rome to discuss new ideas in safety from papal threat; what the long-defunct association has to do with Dr. Vetra's death is far from clear. Vetra's daughter, Vittoria, makes a frightening discovery: a lethal amount of antimatter, sealed in a vacuum flask that will explode in six hours unless its batteries are recharged, is missing. Almost immediately, the Swiss Guard discover that the flask is hidden beneath Vatican City, where the conclave to elect a new pope has just begun. Vittoria and Langdon rush to recover the canister, but they aren't allowed into the Vatican until it is discovered that the four principal papal candidates are missing. The terrorists who are holding the cardinals call in regarding their pending murders, offering clues tied to ancient Illuminati meeting sites and runes. Meanwhile, it becomes clear that a sinister Vatican entity with messianic delusions is in league with the terrorists. Packing the novel with sinister figures worthy of a Medici, Brown (Digital Fortress) sets an explosive pace as Langdon and Vittoria race through a Michelin-perfect Rome to try to save the cardinals and find the antimatter before it explodes. Though its premises strain credulity, Brown's tale is laced with twists and shocks that keep the reader wired right up to the last revelation. (May)

Disappointing
By Grant
Have you ever heard someone say "Oh the movie was OK but the book was much better"? In this case it is the opposite. Go see the movie. It was great. Great screenplay. Great acting. Great production values. But I made the mistake of seeing the movie before reading the book. My wife on the other hand read the book THEN saw the movie. Here are my complaints about the book:

1) Cowardly foreshadowing. The author tells all the characters about something but leaves the reader in the dark. This is a device to build suspence that instead builds resentment on the part of the reader.

2) Poor sentence structure. e.g. He says that St. Peter's tomb is 6 stories under the Earth when he meant below the surface.

3) Bad science. e.g. if antimatter is 100 percent efficient vs fission which is 1.5 percent efficient then how can antimatter be 1,000 more powerful than a nuclear bomb? Or it the amount of antimatter in the story can vaporize a half a mile, how can St. Peter's tomb or the hazmat vault at CERN contain the explosion?

4) Technology errors: There is a scene where the people come out into the crowd of reporters with camera lights blaring and flash-bulbs exploding. When is the last time anybody used a flash-bulb?

My wife enjoyed how the movie was so different than the book. I was annoyed reading the poorly written book after seeing the great job Ron Howard and the screenplay writers did with the movie.

Buy this book? As they say in Texas - El Paso.

Entertaining, But Flawed
By Dave_42
This is the first Dan Brown book that I have read, so I can not compare it with his other stories. The plot is about the re-emergence of a secret society (The Illuminati) which is the ancient nemesis of The Vatican. The story takes place after the death of a Pope (a fictitious one, not John Paul II), when Robert Langdon (a Harvard Professor of religious iconology) is contacted by the head of CERN (a European scientific research group) to provide information on The Illuminati which they believe is involved in the death of one of their leading scientists. As the plot unfolds, it appears that The Illuminati has planted a powerful bomb (with antimatter stolen from CERN) in the Vatican. They also appear to have kidnapped the four leading candidates to become the new Pope with the intention of executing them in a fashion to tell the world that they are still around and powerful, and in an effort to destroy the Catholic Church.

There are many good things about this book. It was easy to read, and the reader is pulled into the story, making its 550+ pages fly by. The characters are interesting, and the conspiracy plot is fairly well done, taking the reader from place to place in Rome and Vatican City. Despite its flaws, for the most part the book was very entertaining.

On the other hand, there are many problems with the story. Some of the "facts" presented in the telling of the history of the Illuminati are wrong, and this does not appear to have been done for plot reasons. The situation with the bomb was not done very well, because the scenario which is presented should have resulted in the bomb being found relatively quickly. Finally, the last part of the book is messy. There are many things thrown in at the end in an attempt to surprise the reader, but it really doesn't read true to the rest of the story; at least not for me.

This is not a bad book. It has a great concept, and for the most part is fun to read. However, the ending and some significant holes in the story are the reasons that I give it two stars. There are better choices available that involve secret societies from hundreds of years ago, such as "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco.

Rough Draft of The Da Vinci Code...
By Robert Graves
Dan Brown is a good writer in many respects. He knows how to milk a scene for all it's worth, he knows how to create conflict, and he's very well researched. He also knows that Americans love a good conspiracy and that knowledge has kept him at the top of the best-seller's list for a year with The Da Vinci Code.
Angels and Demons is "Robert Langdon's First Adventure," according to the advertising on the book's front. In Langdon, Brown has created the new Indiana Jones - an adventure-seeking academic - only Langdon is smarter than Indy ever dreamed of being.
He's also much more of a wuss. This fact isn't quite so clear in The Da Vinci code, but in Angels and Demons, where Brown was obviously still honing his chops as a writer, Langdon is an emasculated pansy for the vast majority of the novel. He's afraid of guns, tags along as the female protagonist leads us through the plot, and always realizes everything just a little too late. Typical of a Dan Brown novel, to talk much about the plot would be to give away his much-used secrets, so I really can't get too into it, but suffice it to say that if anyone else had written Angels and Demons they would've been sued for plagiarism - it's unbelievably similar to The Da Vinci Code. Secret Sect, huge cover-ups, holy church doctrines - all the same stuff.
Aside from a limp hero and its unabashed similarity to his more recent work, Angels and Demons also suffers from the staggering leaps of faith it demands on the audience. There is, quite literally, a "Deus ex machina" ending, 20,000 foot freefalls from helicopters without parachutes, and a total pilfering of the Vatican secret libraries. This is meant to be an epic tale told on an epic scale, and I suppose it loosely succeeds, but whereas Da Vinci Code was impossible to put down, you may not even make it through the exceptionally long Angels and Demons.
I respect Dan Brown greatly and I'm excited to read what he comes out with next. But despite Angels and Demons' similarity to the Da Vinci Code I can see why it never enjoyed even a fraction of its success (for the above reasons). This feels like a first novel - the one you don't publish, but keep on the shelf and rewrite after you've made it big. I guess Brown's doing it the other way around.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on an astonishing amount of research, Israeli journalist Bergman describes in fascinating detail the three-decade intelligence struggle between Iran and the West. It is a grim history dominated by a series of failures, including the rise of Iranian proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran's alliance with Syria and the regime's success in shielding its nuclear program from international scrutiny. Despite some recent Iranian setbacks—e.g., the 2007 Israeli Ghost Raid against a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor—Bergman concludes that Middle Eastern skies have not looked so gloomy for a long time. Among the revelations certain to resonate in the U.S. is Bergman's contention that a secret file exists that proves unequivocally that George H.W. Bush surely knew about all the illegal goings-on in the Iran-Contra scandal—something Bush has always denied. Bergman stops short of recommending a course of action, but he makes a convincing case that Iran is not only a terrorist state but also the greatest security challenge the U.S. is facing. Thoroughly researched and persuasively argued, Bergman's brief against Iran adds a powerful voice to a contentious debate. (Sept.)

The oft-repeated claim that Iran is the “foremost” state sponsor of terrorism has been met with skepticism, perhaps engendered by the intelligence failures preceding the invasion of Iraq. This provocative, disturbing book will give ample ammunition to those who accept that claim. Israeli investigative reporter Bergman’s rather sensational account relies on classified documents and his ties with supposedly reliable sources within the American and Israeli intelligence communities. He describes a murky but ongoing struggle between Iran and its primary surrogate, Hizbullah, on one side, and the U.S. and Israel on the other. Some of the actions covered are well known, such as the attacks upon American institutions in Lebanon. Some of the revelations here are startling, including Israeli cooperation with the regime of the late shah. Many, but not all, of Bergman’s assertions seem credible. He is clearly pursuing an agenda to warn the public of the emerging threat of a nuclear Iran. At a minimum, he proves the case that the world is a dangerous place, and the Middle East is the most dangerous place of all. --Jay Freeman

(Almost) Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Iran, But Were Afraid to Ask
By Man of La Book
Review about the original version in Hebrew.

This book could almost be subtitled "everything you ever wanted to know about Iran but were afraid to ask". Ronen Bergman, an Israeli journalist, uncovers secret documents, dirty deals and manipulations across decades which have gotten us to the point of where we are today.

Unlike other commentators who haven't read the book and are quick to judge about the "right wing slant", I have read the book completely and even though I don't agree with some of the analysis I think the history is fascinating and that by itself is worth the price of admission.

The text I read, which is in the original Hebrew, reads like a clandestine novel and is hard to put down. I thought the book's bias was to the right of center, however my right wing friends thought it was too far to the left. So I guess the author did a good job.

The book starts with a page-turner relationship between Iran and Israel, before and after the Khomeini revolution. This sets the stage for things to come as well as gives the reader a basic understanding of current events as well as the animosity Iran feels towards Israel for supporting the Shah.

Continuing with a journey that spans generations and continents Mr. Bergman takes the reader to lawless South American towns and into secret intelligence meetings as well as dirty dealings among contractors.
So dirty in fact that I felt like taking a shower after reading several passages.

Offering the readers strategic analysis and several anecdotes along the history lesson (whose history it remains to be seen), Mr. Bergman also analyzes the Iranian political system including the current administration, as well as the Iranian nuclear efforts and the country's role in arming and training Hezbollah

The only downfall of the book, admitted by the author, is the inability to cover some issues completely due to either censorship or lack of documentation of paperwork.

If you get the impression from previous posters that this book is a love letter to Israel, you will be sorely disappointed. The author takes a stab at Israeli intelligence almost every other page, the brutal literary blows shatter the image of the "all knowing" Mossad and exposes the inner fighting, lies and the grim price paid by the Israeli people for those shenanigans.

Investigative Journalism at its best- Iran's War with the West
By Shalom Freedman
This is an extremely important book. It describes in a detailed, richly documented, and clearly - argued way the thirty year secret war between Iran and the West, primarily, the United States and Israel. It opens with a description of the twilight of the Iranian monarchy, and tells the story of Khomeini's coming to power. It shows the blindness of American Intelligence services, and their failure to have a full grasp of what was going on in Iran. The theme of the failure of Intelligence, both of U.S. and Israeli sources, and the element of denial in that failure is one central theme of the book.
The book also details operational decisions which at the time seemed a choice of the lesser of two - evils but in the long run proved critically wrong. One of these was the Israeli decision and this with American approval to arm Iran against the growing power of Saddam Hussein. This decision helped save the Islamic Republic from collapse. The book illuminates the whole Iran- contra affair and provides clear evidence of knowledge of the affair at the highest U.S. government levels.
If the mistakes of the U.S. and Israel are one central theme, the other is the determination, comprehensiveness, and ruthlessness of Iran's war of terror against the West. Bergman claims that time and again Iran and its surrogate Hizbollah outsmarted and dealt telling blows to Israel and the U.S. Successful terror bombings such as two in Beirut on the American Embassy in April 18, 1983, and on the Marine contingent at the Beirut Airport October 23, 1983- on the Israel intelligence service facility at Tyre in Southern Lebanon November 1982 , or the US. Army installation at Khobar in Saudi Arabia were devastating tactical and strategic successes. The terror drove the U.S. from Lebanon, and it put Israeli intelligence services into a process of denial which was no doubt part of the unpreparedness which led to the failures of the 2006 War with Hizbollah.
Bergman gives a lot of credit for Hizbollah's terror successes to one operative Imad Mougniyeh who was behind most of the spectacular operations. He was responsible for more American deaths than any terror force before 9/11. Another surprising revelation of this work is that despite the stereotypical conception of Shiite- Sunnite enmity in the matter of terror the Shiite operatives of Mougniyeh and the Sunni operatives of Al-Quaeda have trained and worked together.
This book traces how Hizbollah rose to power in Lebanon. It tells the story of how an Israeli arms- dealer and traitor supplied Nachum Manber supplied Iran with the basis for its chemical WMD. It tells the story of Iran's dealings with Russia in regard to acquiring technology for a nuclear weapon, and shows how it thwarted in that route found a way to the technology through Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Kadeer Khan. It gives convincing evidence as to how Iran has fooled the IAEA and the world and continued to progress towards nuclear weapons.
More than any book I have seen it traces through affair after affair the battle of wits and intelligences between the two sides, and shows how far too often the Iranians have had the upper hand.
It concludes with a description of the successful Israel operation against Iran's strongest state ally, Syria's nuclear facility. It also briefly describes the July 2008 assassination of Imad Moughniyeh, which came too late to save hundreds he had been responsible for the death of.
It concludes by connecting the failures of intelligence in the United States and Israel with larger social trends , including a loss of confidence in government. It suggests that Iran and Hizbollah have proven more sophisticated adversaries than the U.S. and Israel have ever known before in the Middle East. It points out that the failures of the 2006 war have led to a tightening of the Iranian- Syrian alliance. And it warns that Iran is not simply interested in protecting its own regime but is rather an aggressive exporter of its own revolution, determined to acquire nuclear weapons. He points to recent successes of the U.S. and Israel , the defection of General Askari, the Israeli stealth attack on the Syrian nuclear facility, the `mishap' at the VX gas facility at al- Safir as a sign of improvement in the functioning of Western intelligence. But Bergman points out also that the Iranians have in supporting terrorist forces in Iraq through the patronage of the Iranian revolutionary guards done great damage there. The Iranians and Syrians have rearmed Hizbollah and taught Hamas in Gaza its war tactics in anticipation of their next round with Israel.
This book shows how if there is one power in the world central to the campaign of terror being waged against the West, it is Iran. And the book concludes with Iran on the verge of attaining the nuclear capability which will increase exponentially its capacity for inflicting horror.
The book traces the historical record, and does not as it might have go into the possible scenarios which are to come in the war.
This book is solid, factual, the very best type of investigative journalism. I recommend it to anyone who really wants to know what has been going in the Middle East, or part of it, in the past thirty years.

Written by an Israeli journalist who had access to secret Mossad documents
By Frederick Dungan
Written by an Israeli journalist with access to secret Mossad documents and insider knowledge about what has, is, and will be happening inside Iran. The author's painstaking research and attention to detail is very much in evidence. In an age when hack journalists and armchair generals give birth to 2 or 3 books a year off the tops of their heads in pretty much the same way that Zeus gave birth to Athena, it is reassuring to know that there are still a few writers like Bergman who have the integrity to do the job right. Bergman sets a standard for political analysis that others will find hard to follow. If you want to know how the Ayatollah and the mullahs came to power and what they intend to do with it, this book is a must read.
