More than two million readers have used The Book of Virtues, the nationwide #1 bestseller by William J. Bennett, to help their families learn the essential traits of good character.

The Moral Compass, the inspiring and instructive companion volume to The Book of Virtues, offers many more examples of good and bad, right and wrong, in great works from literature and in exemplary stories from history. Organized by the stages along life's journey, these stories and poems serve as reference points on a moral compass, guiding the reader through the ethical and spiritual challenges along the pathway of life: leaving home, entering into marriage, easing the burdens of others, nurturing one's children, and fulfilling the obligations of citizenship and leadership.

Drawn from familiar Western history and mythology as well as a wide selection of tales and folklore from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the stories in The Moral Compass are literary and evocative, designed to inspire as well as instruct. Complete with informative introductions and notes, The Moral Compass is an indispensable guide that will help family members meet the challenges of life at any age.

From Publishers Weekly
Like Bennett's bestselling Book of Virtues, this volume gathers hundreds of stories, poems and essays that defend or illustrate virtue and family values. Quoting Flannery O'Connor, Bennett states the book's purpose: "You have to push as hard as the age that pushes against you." Compass, just as portly as its predecessor, is arranged by seven life stages and challenges: the child at home and at school; the adult in need of perseverance, compassion, family fidelity, community, responsibility and faith in God. Selections, ranging in length from just a few lines to over 15 pages, come mostly from times when masculine virtue was considered the norm and men took center stage. Most are from European or Western culture, but a not inconsiderable number are drawn from African, Asian and Latin American traditions.

From Library Journal
In this companion volume to The Book of Virtues (LJ 11/1/93), former Secretary of Education Bennett hopes to keep the needle of America's moral compass pointing always to the straight and narrow. Believing that learning to be virtuous is a lifelong journey, Bennett has provided a kind of moral travel guide and map through each territory?childhood, adolescence, adulthood?along the way. Selections range from Eudora Welty's touching story "A Worn Path" (childhood) to the Cinderella-like East European folk tale "The Twelve Months" (adolescence) to the overwrought tale of Monica, the mother of St. Augustine (adulthood). Bennett's certainty about the principles of right and wrong allow no room for the complexities inherent in the struggle to be virtuous. Even so, his books have been popular precisely because of this moral nostalgia and simplicity, so demand for this title is likely to be high.

From Booklist
Two years back, conservative gadfly William J. Bennett frightened the publishing business when The Book of Virtues became one of the biggest best-sellers of the 1990s. It was an anthology of the kind of stuff that parents supposedly quit reading to their kids at least a half-century ago, stories and verses that had morals to them and nothing ironic, satiric, distanced, or otherwise modernistic about them. The book's success suggested that old verities and manners long reviled as hypocritical were back in style. It certainly mandated a second helping--this book. The contents here appear in seven sections that loosely trace life's progress from "Home and Hearth" on "Into the World" and learning when and how to persevere ("Standing Fast" ) and be generous and kind ("Easing the Past" ), then becoming "Mothers and Fathers, Husbands and Wives" and exercising "Citizenship and Leadership," and finally ascertaining "What We Live By" --that is, why "those things we call virtues are . . . not just means; [but] very frequently . . . the ends themselves." Drawn from the Bible and Homer, from the legends of cultures throughout the world, from plenty of Victorian writers, and from the popular magazines of the pre^-World War II era, the selections are uniformly readable, definitely and honorably moral, as promised. Who Killed Art Deco?: A Novel, by Chuck Barris

From the infamous mind of a comic madman—and the author of the sardonic The Big Question—comes a mind-numbingly hilarious parody of cop dramas, police procedurals, and America’s upper crust.

• Comic legend: Chuck Barris is the creator and former producer of The Gong Show, The Newlywed Game, and The Dating Game, among many others. His memoir, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, sparked a worldwide debate as to the validity of his professed identity when he claimed to have worked as an assassin for the Central Intelligence Agency during the 1960s and the 1970s. As a storyteller, Barris is the blackest comedian there is. As a satirist, he may be one of the best writers around today.

• A masterful spoof: Art Deco Jr. is heir to a vast fortune, scion of one of America’s most powerful men—but he is also the black sheep of the family. When he is found murdered in his Manhattan apartment, everyone wonders who could have killed him. Was it Art’s recently spurned lover, Eddie Cotton, the failed actor and gigolo? Was it one of Art’s own relatives, all of whom seem ready to disown him for tarnishing the family name? As the investigation unfolds, it becomes apparent to the novice detective Jimmy Netts that without an actual license, it’s tough to investigate anything resembling a crime scene. Full of uproarious investigative snafus, Who Killed Art Deco? is a dark and delightfully funny book from an equally troubled mind.

From Publishers Weekly
Barris (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) misses the mark with this grating attempt at whodunit parody. Heir to millions, Arthur Art Deco Jr. wants nothing to do with his father's mammoth company, Kentucky-based Deco Industries, preferring to hobnob in Manhattan. So when he falls in love with wannabe actor Eddie Cotton and gleefully announces to his father, Arthur Deco Sr., that he's gay, it doesn't sit well with Deco Sr. or the rest of Art's Southern family. When Art is discovered shot in his apartment, the police are quick to call it a suicide and avoid a high-profile investigation. But then Jimmy Netts, a former podiatrist-turned-unlicensed-PI from Philadelphia, recently relocated to Bowling Green, Ky., hits the scene, hired by Deco Sr. to look into Art's death and prove it was murder. Netts gets most of his investigative techniques from old episodes of Homicide, but manages to bumble along, thanks to the help of two unbelievably cooperative NYPD detectives, finally stumbling upon the underwhelming truth. Unfortunately, Barris's characters are one-dimensional stereotypes, and the sophomoric humor is, well, very sophomoric. (June)

From Booklist
The latest novel by the author of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (1982) and The Big Question (2007) is a three-in-one literary satire, lampooning simultaneously the murder mystery, the private-eye novel, and the family drama. Outrageous, yes, but readers would expect nothing less from the man whose memoir claimed he was a CIA assassin and whose previous novel posited a ruthless (yet oddly plausible) game show. The wealthy murdered man, Arthur Deco, Jr.; the prime suspect, Art’s spurned gay lover; and the private eye, Jimmy Netts, are drawn with broad strokes, like characters in one of Woody Allen’s New Yorker essays, and they are all very funny. The story is labyrinthine, as befits a murder-mystery spoof (fans of S. J. Perelman will be pleased), and Barris’ portrayal of the victim’s uniformly eccentric family reads like a spoof of P. G. Wodehouse, if it’s possible to spoof a spoofer. Barris, who gained early fame as the creator of such television fare as The Gong Show, is a wildly inventive writer whose imagination takes him, and us, to some very strange and entertaining places. --David Pitt

"Once he kicks into gear, Barris is as antic in mystery mode as in any other. Like a more linear Tim Dorsey, the former Gong Show host (The Big Question, 2007, etc.) deadpans his way through his detection debut, delivered shotgun style." -- Kirkus

"I thoroughly enjoyed Who Killed Art Deco?! And I was fascinated once the various characters began to unfold. All in all a fun read." -- Dick Clark

Chuck Barris Fans - Take Art Deco to the beach

Those of us who are lifelong fans of Chuck Barris will find Who Killed Art Deco to be the icing on the cake in his prolific career. He draws you inside the character's personas, paints backdrops that are perfect accompaniments to the story and weaves a tale that makes one not want to put the book down.

It is a love story, a satire, a comedy, a mystery, a commentary on modern life and a fun read for any sunny beach.

Chuckie, Chuckie, Chuckie
By Quixote010
It started out with a-fixing a permanent smile to my face.

When I got to page 23, the line: "Eddie Cantelone was a twenty-five-year old lying, sleazy scuzzbag" brought about my first out-loud chuckle.

By the time I was a third of the way into the book, the people at the next table were giving me weird glances. By halfway, the task of holding back the tears and trying to stop my sides from heaving were too much so I had to go home. That's Chuck Barris.

Of course Chuck has always made me laugh, even when he isn't writing, but Who Killed Art Deco is bound to please everyone. Art Deco Jr. is the reluctant heir of Deco Industries who despises his father, his siblings, and everything about his wealthy lifestyle. To compensate, he undertakes the bohemian lifestyle in New York and engages a variety of misfits, any of whom could be responsible for his demise. Seeking vengeance, Deco senior persuades a novice investigator to find the killer. And as Chuck would say, the chuckles keep coming.

Besides being entertaining, the book is easy to read, has an interesting little mystery connected in it, and a variety of characters who he develops just enough so that you can structure a fine superficial opinion about them.

I suppose to really appreciate Barris you have to see life from his point of view, and from his point, there are a lot of funny, misfit people and situations in the world.

A good laugh!
By KSC
What a wonderful read; funny, engaging, a bit of a mystery but nothing scary, and a sordid tale thrown in for good measure. The family of Art Deco is a cast of curious characters. His life and ultimate death leads the reader on a fantastic journey. I just wish Barris would write more books like this!

She continues to see the young woman's face in crowds and has even stopped strangers on the street, certain she has finally discovered her.

Now in Ireland, on what was originally intended to be a celebration of her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary—had her husband had not left her for another woman—Marcy yet again thinks she sees her daughter, casually strolling past her on the sidewalk. So begins Marcy’s desperate search to find Devon, to find herself, and to find the disturbing truth that might, in the end, be her only salvation.

Filled with the kind of tension, suspense, and compelling heroines readers crave, this riveting story is one fans won't want to miss.

From Publishers Weekly
Fielding (The Wild Zone) delivers another emotional blitz in this story about Marcy Taggart, who, at 50, is newly divorced and mourning her daughter, Devon, who two years ago disappeared in a boating accident and is presumed dead. On what was to be her 25th wedding anniversary, Marcy travels to Ireland for a vacation and spots a girl she believes to be Devon, and her sightseeing quickly turns into a quest. For better or worse, she meets two strangers who offer to help her in her search, but she can't determine whether their kindness is sincere. The stakes are raised when Marcy's hotel room is ransacked, and the carefully drawn plot twists toward a dramatic conclusion. Though some of the coincidences and developments stretch believability, Fielding succeeds in creating a winning heroine; indeed, Marcy's need for emotional release ends up being a more compelling plot driver than the unlikely craziness involving her charismatic new friends and the hunt for her daughter. From Booklist
Fifty-year-old Marcy Taggart is in Ireland celebrating her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary with one notable absence, that of her husband, who recently left her for the female golf pro at their country club. Ever since the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, Devon, two years ago, Marcy has been suffering one long nervous breakdown. Her soon-to-be-ex-husband and her sister are convinced that Devon, who had bipolar disorder, committed suicide. But Marcy believes Devon ran away to start a new life. When Marcy takes a break from her relentless sightseeing in Cork, she catches sight of Devon through a window, and so begins her reckless odyssey to reclaim her missing daughter. A handsome tourist, a charming bartender, and a lonely nanny add spice to the mix. Despite Fielding’s weakness at creating dialogue and her rote attempts to add local color and history, which read like they’ve been cut and pasted from a Fodor’s guide, Marcy is one appealing character. Blunt, grief-stricken, and, finally, sick and tired of acting the good girl, she gives vent to her emotions and comes into her own. --Joanne Wilkinson

Not what I would expect from Joy Fielding
By Katerina Wirth
This was a very tedious read - and I admit I had to skim the middle of it because it was getting ridiculous and very confusing. The author jumped from one topic to another, kept mixing thoughts with dialog, past with present, and the whole story was far fetched.

The constant lecturing about Ireland, the constant descriptions of RAIN, the ridiculous clumsiness and naiveté of the main protagonist. It was hard to believe the heroine was supposed to be in the 50s (i.e. mature and wise).

The whole ending was like from a bad movie, thrown together and sloppily written.

Joy Fielding's earlier books were always amazing, so this was a huge disappointment. It read like something out of a college writing class.

A Mesmerizing Mystery
By Roberta M. Austin
Marcy Taggart has been hit with an emotional wallop, but she has not fallen. First her daughter was killed in a canoeing accident two years ago. The body was never found, so Marcy has never truly accepted her daughter's death. Her husband has moved on and left her for another woman. At fifty, Marcy is taking a tour of Ireland that was meant to be a twenty-fifth wedding anniversary trip. During a break at a pub, Marcy thinks she sees her daughter Devon walk past. Could her daughter still be alive and hiding out in Ireland to make a new start?

Marcy sets out on a journey to find her daughter and along the way meets others who either seem too eager to help her or want to hide vital information. It is hard to know who to trust and where the truth lies.

As a long time fan of Joy Fielding, I was thrilled to get an early copy of NOW YOU SEE HER to read and review. As a mature woman myself, it was refreshing to have a heroine who had been through life's trials. Ms. Fielding has crafted a mesmerizing novel with touches of melancholy and madness, but ultimately an ode to women who overcome adversity.

The Irish setting gave an extra dimension to the tale and the vivid descriptions made me feel I was right in the middle of the landscapes.

If you have never read Joy Fielding's books before, you need to start with this one and work your way through her back list.

Not what I expected
By Elaine Tobias
I have read most of Joy Fielding's and enjoyed them, this one was just, blah. Marcy, the main character comes across as just plain dumb and you don't really care what happens to her. Her other characters are undeveloped and flat and you don't care about them either. Big disappointment!

From Publishers Weekly
Sisterly rivalry is the basis of this fresh, wonderfully vivid retelling of the story of Anne Boleyn. Anne, her sister Mary and their brother George are all brought to the king's court at a young age, as players in their uncle's plans to advance the family's fortunes. Mary, the sweet, blond sister, wins King Henry VIII's favor when she is barely 14 and already married to one of his courtiers. Their affair lasts several years, and she gives Henry a daughter and a son. But her dark, clever, scheming sister, Anne, insinuates herself into Henry's graces, styling herself as his adviser and confidant. Soon she displaces Mary as his lover and begins her machinations to rid him of his wife, Katherine of Aragon. This is only the beginning of the intrigue that Gregory so handily chronicles, capturing beautifully the mingled hate and nearly incestuous love Anne, Mary and George ("kin and enemies all at once") feel for each other and the toll their family's ambition takes on them. Mary, the story's narrator, is the most sympathetic of the siblings, but even she is twisted by the demands of power and status; charming George, an able plotter, finally brings disaster on his own head by falling in love with a male courtier. Anne, most tormented of all, is ruthless in her drive to become queen, and then to give Henry a male heir. Rather than settling for a picturesque rendering of court life, Gregory conveys its claustrophobic, all-consuming nature with consummate skill. In the end, Anne's famous, tragic end is offset by Mary's happier fate, but the self-defeating folly of the quest for power lingers longest in the reader's mind.

From Library Journal
Before Henry VIII ever considered making Anne Boleyn his wife, her older sister, Mary, was his mistress. Historical novelist Gregory (Virgin Earth) uses the perspective of this "other Boleyn girl" to reveal the rivalries and intrigues swirling through England. The sisters and their brother George were raised with one goal: to advance the Howard family's interests, especially against the Seymours. So when Mary catches the king's fancy, her family orders her to abandon the husband they had chosen. She bears Henry two children, including a son, but Anne's desire to be queen drives her with ruthless intensity, alienating family and foes. As Henry grows more desperate for a legitimate son and Anne strives to replace Catherine as queen, the social fabric weakens. Mary abandons court life to live with a new husband and her children in the countryside, but love and duty bring her back to Anne time and again. We share Mary's helplessness as Anne loses favor, and everyone abandons her amid accusations of adultery, incest, and witchcraft. Even the Boleyn parents won't intervene for their children. Gregory captures not only the dalliances of court but the panorama of political and religious clashes throughout Europe. She controls a complicated narrative and dozens of characters without faltering, in a novel sure to please public library fans of historical fiction. Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State Univ., Mankato

a fascinating and enthralling read
By tregatt
I had more or less given up reading historical novels when I ran out of books by Jean Plaidy to read. For me, she was one of the truly rare authours (saving Sharon Kay Penman of course) who got the feel, tone and character of her subject matter right. So that I had more or less stopped looking out for new books in this genre to read. And then I saw "The Other Boleyn Girl" at my local bookstore, and after sampling the first chapter, I realized that I had to buy this book. And I'm awfully glad that I did. What a simply wonderful read!! Phillipa Gregory did a really splendid job of evoking the splendor and turbulence of Henry VIII's court. I also thought that her choice of narrator, Mary Boleyn (the elder of the Boleyn sisters) was an inspired as well. Most historians (and perhaps I've only read the those that espoused this majority view) tend to dismiss Mary as an empty headed good time girl because she was used and cast aside with very little ceremony; and because she never rose as high as her sister, Anne. But you have to wonder: Mary was also the only Boleyn sibling to survive the vicissitudes of Henry VIII's reign, and the fall of the Howard-Boleyn fortunes; she also managed to marry for love (and a happy and lasting marriage it proved to be too) the second time around. So perhaps there was a lot more to the 'other Boleyn girl' than everyone credits?
Gregory's novel opens and closes with two executions -- it begins with the execution of the Duke of Buckingham in 1521, and ends with the execution of Anne Boleyn in 1536. With this rather grim events framing her book, the novel proper starts in 1522, with Anne arrival at the Tudor court, where her elder sister, Mary, is already lady-in-waiting to Henry's wife, Queen Katherine. From the very beginning we see that while there is a bond that ties the Boleyn sisters together, there is also a deep rooted rivalry between them. It is a tense time at court: the queen (already quite a few years older than her husband) has yet to produce a male heir to the throne, and people are beginning to question if the aging queen will ever be able to bear children again. Some of Henry's advisers are even began to gently hint that he should put his Spanish wife aside and look for a younger more fecund wife. In the midst of all this intrigue, Mary soon catches the king's roving eye. Although she is married and still quite loyal to the queen, her family (her ruthless parents as well as her uncle, the powerful and equally ruthless Duke of Howard) decrees that she put her marriage and loyalties aside and cater to the whims of her king. Bedazzled, it doesn't take Mary very long to fall in love with both her golden king and her role as the his 'unofficial' wife. A few years and two royal by-blows later however, Mary is shunted aside when the king begins to loose interest in their relationship and her ambitious family fearful that they will loose all the power that they have gained, throws the more ruthless and seductive sister, Anne at the king's head. From then on Mary, her eyes finally wide open as to how low her family will stoop in order to gain power, watches from the sidelines as her family, led by Anne, begins their high stakes play for the queen's crown. Finally realizing that she can only depend on herself for her own future, Mary is inspired to take a few risks herself in order to gain some measure of happiness and security.
The sheer scope of this novel is gigantic -- there were so many things that were going on both on and off stage and the number of people that were involved in all these shenanigans! So that it was a treat to find that the novel unfolded smoothly and effortlessly, and that Gregory did not drop the ball once. She kept each chapter short and succinct, and yet still managed to give the reader an enthralling and exciting account of what was going on. I also liked the manner in which she depicted all the characters in this novel. From Queen Katherine who was portrayed not only as a loyal and loving wife, but also as an intelligent woman who saw and understood what was going on around her, even as she clung to the hope that the king would recover from his obsession with Anne; to the authour's chilling portrayal of the Boleyn family (father, mother, Anne and George). With a few well chosen words and phrases, she's paints them as wildly ambitious, ruthless and pettily cruel individuals, willing to use each other in order to achieve a particular goal. But the authour's characterization of Mary Boleyn was probably the best thing in the novel. Here we see a young and intelligent woman with a heart and a sense of morality that is constantly at war with her feeling of familial obligations. How Mary struggles with this dueling feelings and the decisions she makes -- sometimes good, sometimes bad -- is what makes this novel worth reading.
All in all, I'd say "The Other Boleyn Girl" is a rich and rewarding read.

Incredible Historical Fiction
By Amazon Customer
The Other Boleyn Girl, is hands down the best piece of historical fiction I have ever read. Upon reading it, I have been searching for other books of its genre and subject matter to delve into.
Gregory made these characters come alive for me, and made me understand how difficult it was to live as a woman in the early 1500s. Mary was especially well crafted. At 13 years old she went from her forced marriage to being thrown into the King's arms as his mistress. The inner struggles she fought between being true to herself and her heart, or true to her family were especially poignant.
Anne Boleyn, the most famous and tragically terminated sister, is portrayed in such a venomous way. She would stop at nothing to get what she wanted, and to rise in power and prestige. In the end it killed her. But her character, as portrayed by Ms. Gregory, was compelling and convincingly ugly, despite her beauty.
King Henry VIII also jumped off the pages. He came off as a spoiled brat, even as he grew older, who always got what he wanted. He and Anne were well matched for each other as no level of deceipt was too high.
Ms. Gregory was brilliant in choosing Mary as the narrator of this book. In doing so, the manipulative and scheming nature of Anne was able to come alive, as was the unorthodox lifestyle chosen by George Boleyn, the brother. The relationship amongst the Boleyn siblings, in and of itself, could fill a novel. The complexities of a family struggling to maintain individual identities, while working to bring the family up to the highest level of stature is intense.
This book is a page turner; it is incredibly compelling, deep and fascinating. I learned a great deal about the monarchy of Henry VII as well as life in the court during that time period. At the same time, I found myself incredibly entertained and saddened when I reached the last page. I cannot wait for more from Ms. Gregory.

Inaccurate at best
By ds
The author lost my interest right off the bat when she proclaimed Mary to be the younger Boleyn girl. All historical sources agree that she was the elder daughter. That doesn't really matter to the story, so why not get it right? I was also annoyed by the portrayal of Mary as an innocent young girl when she first met Henry VIII...in fact, she had previously been the mistress of Francois I of France and had been kicked out of the French court for prostitution, which is why she returned to England while Anne remained in France. When Mary arrived at the English Court, an innocent she was NOT. I found the author's portraits of all 3 Boleyn children to be biased in the direction she wanted them to go, as opposed to being realistic based on the historical data available. The author was prone to conveniently leaving out facts that were relevant to the story but did not support her simplistic view of each character. Anyone who has read historical accounts of these characters and times will be severely disappointed in this book. I only hope that the general public does not mistake this book for history.

Soul to Soul: Communications from the Heart, by Gary Zukav

In Soul to Soul, Gary Zukav, author of the monumental bestseller The Seat of the Soul, addresses some of the most significant questions about the human experience -- from "Why is life so difficult?" to "How can I learn to trust?" -- with profound answers that are of truly universal value.

With the publication of his revolutionary work The Seat of the Soul, Zukav emerged as an important leader in the world of spiritual development, and it became one of the all-time successful books of its kind. Each of Zukav's subsequent books, all of them bestsellers in their own right, has explored different aspects of that seminal work, offering detailed explanations and practical applications of his original vision.

Soul to Soul represents a giant step forward in the expression of his work, providing penetrating insights that illuminate our lives. It is divided into two sections. Part One, "Soul Subjects," consists of fifty brief, perceptive, and compelling chapters that encourage us to examine our own experiences in new and perhaps life-changing ways. Part Two, "Soul Questions," is different from anything Zukav has written before. Combining profound spiritual and psychological insights, Zukav answers nearly one hundred important questions about life. Each chapter ends with a challenge to readers to experiment with the insight that has been given and make it their own. "Soul Questions," which spans the full range of Zukav's vision, asks:

  • Do we have a destiny?
  • Can you prove that life exists after death?
  • What is the meaning of dreams?
  • How can I love without fear?
  • What is the role of soul in my life?
  • How does a person know what he was put on Earth to do?
  • How can I forgive someone who betrays me again and again?
  • How can I really change?
  • Does the Universe care about us?

Soul to Soul is profoundly simple, wise, and poetic, a book to treasure and return to again and again for guidance and inspiration.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In 1990 Zukav shifted from science (1980 National Book Award for The Dancing Wu Li Masters) to the realm of the soul (The Seat of the Soul, etc.), ultimately scaling the New York Times bestseller list four times. This new work claims to be written directly from his heart, and the personal, intimate tone fulfills that promise. The first half explores soul subjects, or observations of physical circumstances plus a recognition of what they mean. The second half answers philosophical ponderings labeled here as soul questions. In very brief essays both sections address key subjects: love, fear, choice, responsibility, letting go, trusting life's processes. In Zukav's understanding, we are all attending Earth School, where in repeated incarnations we are given opportunities to fulfill our soul's mission. He cogently asserts that as more of us gain multi-sensory perception-the ability to intuit meaning beyond data gathered by our five senses-we are coming to understand how our choices impact our every moment and therefore our soul's work. Zukav's Green Beret background seems to inform his writing style: blunt, terse, effective, commanding. Rich in insight and compassion, Zukav's advanced efforts will likely zoom to the top again. His probing choice-revenge or compassion-regarding September 11th is alone more than worth the cost of the book. (Oct. 23)

Some helpful insight
By Amazon Customer
There is some good insight here but overall I feel the information is too black and white. I enjoyed Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth" much more because his teaching is so helpful but leaves space without trying to define everything.

THE DEFINITIVE WORK OF AMERICAN TRUE CRIME FROM "AMERICA'S BEST TRUE-CRIME WRITER" (Kirkus Reviews)

Utterly unique in its astonishing intimacy, as jarringly frightening as when it first appeared, Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me defies our expectation that we would surely know if a monster lived among us, worked alongside of us, appeared as one of us. With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drawing from their correspondence that endured until shortly before Bundy's death, and striking a seamless balance between her deeply personal perspective and her role as a crime reporter on the hunt for a savage serial killer -- the brilliant and charismatic Bundy, the man she thought she knew -- Rule changed the course of true-crime literature with this unforgettable chronicle.

Amazon.com Review
Not long ago, true crime writer Ann Rule recalls lying on an operating table. The anesthesiologist leaned over before putting her to sleep. "Ann," the anesthesiologist said softly, "tell me, what was Ted Bundy really like?" Despite meeting Florida's electric chair in 1989, the subject of Rule's bestselling book continues to haunt her. Rule and Bundy were friends. They met in 1971 at a Seattle crisis clinic, where they shared the late shift answering a suicide hotline. Their subsequent conversations, meetings, and letters spanned the rest of Bundy's life as he evolved into one of the century's most notorious serial killers. It's been 20 years since Rule first penned this chilling account. But the story--and her 2000 update--will still have readers reaching for their Xanax. No gratuitous gore here; just the basic, bone-chilling evidence. In fact, like a protective mother shielding us from horrors too awful to mention, Rule seems to avoid delving too deeply into crime scene descriptions. She devotes one paragraph in her new afterword to her discovery that Bundy engaged in necrophilia and returned to the scenes of his crimes to "line dead lips and eyes with garish makeup and to put blush on pale cheeks." She tells readers that John Hinckley, who shot Ronald Reagan, and David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam Killer, traded prison correspondences with Bundy. And she hints that Bundy's insatiable killer instincts may have started when he was a 14-year-old paperboy. (Ann Marie Burr, an 8-year-old girl on his route, mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the night and has never been found.) The skimpy update is over too soon, leaving readers wanting more and offering further proof of the public's never-ending fascination with serial killers. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

THIS KILLER BESIDE ME...
By lawyeraau
This is an excellent true crime book. It has an unusual twist in that the author and the subject of the book, serial killer Ted Bundy, had a platonic relationship that arose from the time they were co-workers for a Seattle, Washington crisis center. Quite frankly, the author initially had no idea that Ted Bundy was anything other than what he appeared to be: a handsome, intelligent, charismatic, and articulate young man, who was, at the time, involved in local politics and later became a law student.

When he became the suspect in the disappearance and murders of a number of very young, pretty women, the author was in total disbelief. As the evidence mounted against her friend, the author, who is a former police officer, could not shut her eyes to the reality that Ted Bundy was actually a very disturbed individual who was guilty of all of which he was accused and probably guilty of other such crimes for which he was not accused for evidentiary reasons. Consequently, the author would suffer some angst for many years, as she struggled to reconcile the Ted Bundy that she thought she knew with the fiend who was compelled to commit so many vicious abductions, assaults, and murders. It is believed that at least thirty-five young women, and probably a good number more, died at the hands of Ted Bundy.

The author details the abductions, assaults, and murders of his victims from coast to coast, which crimes were ultimately to make Ted Bundy a nationwide household name, and an entity to be feared. The investigative efforts of law enforcement officers in the states of Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Florida are revealed, as are Ted Bundy's arrests and his trials. She also details his two escapes from custody in Colorado, the last of which would find him heading to the sunshine state of Florida.

Florida was an interesting choice of state for Ted Bundy, as it is a death penalty state in which convicted felons, who have been given the death penalty, are actually executed. Notwithstanding Florida's stance on capital crime, Ted Bundy went on to commit a slew of shocking assaults and murders in Florida for which he was ultimately arrested, tried, and convicted. Considering the fact that Ted Bundy could have chosen to relocate to a state other than Florida after his last escape from custody in Colorado, it almost appears as if he had a death wish by going to Florida and continuing to give in to his sick compulsion. Unfortunately for him, Florida was quite happy to make his wish come true, and on January 24, 1989, Ted Bundy was executed, and his reign of terror was finally over.

Those who like the true crime genre will enjoy this well-written and well-researched book. It is highly detailed and contains a great deal of information, some of it quite personal due to the author's relationship with Ted Bundy. She paints a very intriguing, intimate portrait of him, one that is three dimensional and complex. He was definitely a man whose benign and compelling external visage was at odds with his many internal demons, as he was a prolific serial killer. Externally, Ted Bundy was the sort of man towards whom women gravitated, and there was no dearth of Ted Bundy groupies once he made headlines.

In the updates at the end of the book, the author theorizes as to why Ted Bundy, a young man of so much promise, would end up the way that he did, and she provides some interesting and personal familial information from which the reader may draw his or her own conclusion. All in all, aficionados of the true crime genre will find much of interest in this book.

Ann Rule RULES!!!
By Presela Anne
Ann Rule was an exceptional writer who I just know was born to write this book, and others like it. She gives a chilling account of what it was like to have actually known Ted Bundy, to have worked alongside him, and then to have gone through the absolutely harrowing ordeal of discovering he was one of the most prolific serial killers of all time. I felt like I was living right alongside her. A very compelling book, with fascinating details and great honesty. A must read for crime buffs and students of human nature. EXCELLENT!!!

Incredibly Sloppy Editing
By Amazon Customer
This book is really, really poorly edited. I'm not sure if something went wrong with the Kindle version - but there were things like paragraphs ending with a comma; a missing digit with a big "CHECK" in parentheses, etc. I have honestly never seen those kinds of errors in a published book before. Beyond that kind of copyediting sloppiness, this book is really long and there are tons of sections that don't add to the overall narrative at all. Every conversation she had with Ted Bundy, with topics like him not liking jello as his jail dinner, are drawn out vs. sticking to the pieces that are really insightful about his personality/behavior. It's really too bad because a book about this horrible serial killer, written by someone who knew him, should be really fascinating. I finally quit the book 3/4 of the way through. I'm giving two stars vs. one mainly because this does share a lot of details about Bundy and his crimes that I didn't know.

    Prayer ♥ Uterine Lining

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.

    Jeremiah 1:5a

Certainly the world owes more to the prayers of women than it realizes.

    Herbert Lockyer
A Prayer for Baby—Body and Soul
God, I know it’s never too early to pray for my future children. Thoughts of motherhood have always had a place in my mind and heart. I’m not naïve enough to think it will be easy, but I know I can do this with you by my side.

God, will you watch over my body as it prepares to welcome a child into my womb? Will you work out everything for good and make sure the conditions are just right for conception?

I want to start praying even now for the child who will someday rest in my arms. Would you protect that baby? Would you help him grow up to be healthy and happy? To be a child who falls in love with Jesus and never stops growing in his relationship with you?

Please give me the discipline to pray for my child every day for the rest of my life.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.
    Baby’s Physical Development
No baby yet at this point. His parts are still nestled safely in two different bodies—Mom’s and Dad’s. It’s amazing to think that a tiny egg (present in a woman’s body since before she was born) can unite with an even tinier sperm from her partner’s body and create a brand-new human being. Your uterine lining goes so baby can come!

    Mom’s Development—Body and Soul
Oddly enough, the forty weeks of pregnancy start two weeks before your baby is even conceived. If you’ve been trying for a while, you’re probably spending a lot of time talking to God about this desire of your heart. He’s listening to those prayers!

If a baby wasn’t in your plans right now, God knows this too. And He’ll be there for you throughout your pregnancy, guiding you through.

Whether the start of your period spells disappointment or relief, your body is hard at work readying your uterus for a baby. The lining of the uterine wall has been shed, and hormones are preparing an egg for release. If the timing and conditions are right, and a single sperm unites with that egg, you could get pregnant!

This is a week of contemplation. Pray for wisdom, calmness of heart (more babies seem to be conceived in relaxed atmospheres), and unity between you and your husband.

And then get ready for the ride of your life!
    In Your Words
What one request is weighing on your heart right now? Write a prayer to God that addresses that need.

We received this book from a friend when expecting and have since bought it twice for other friends. Each week has a short read on baby's development and encouraging words for mom with a prayer for both. It was something that we looked forward to each week. Great book for expecting parents!

    Pregnancy Devotional
    By Margaret C.
As I close the cover of this little book I have a few tears in my eyes. I could easily blame it on the pregnancy hormones, but that would only be half true. The idea of imagining that it is really only days if not weeks that I will be able to meet my little girl is unreal. What is funny to me is the part that I read at the last chapter that really gave me tears was the mention that as the mother I will not be the only one with tears, but Daddy will have them too. *grin* I never much think of my husband crying, or having tears run down his cheeks. But it was he that had tears of joy at our wedding and I was too astonished to have any myself. I just could not help but smile at him. How appropriate is it, that the idea of my first child being born reminds me wedding day. *sigh*

Taviano really has a way with prayer and words through out this little devotional and I look forward to looking into some of her other books such as Changing Your World One Diaper at a Time A Reflective Journey Through Your Child's First Years. This book goes for 40 weeks to follow each week of pregnancy with tips and prayers.

    Each week chapter consists of:

    * a prayer for your child's body and soul
    * a devotional message
    * a carefully selected scripture
    * an inspirational quote
    * a "body and soul" reflection for mom
    * a space for you to journal your own thoughts and prayers.

Without a doubt I would recommend this to every Mama who is expecting. It is a fabulous devotional for her own growth and would make a great gift. My only qualm was that I did not get a copy of it until after I was 20 weeks pregnant, I wish I had started earlier, but I still enjoyed going back and catching up where I missed.
