Ivo Daalder and Mac Destler provide the first inside look at how presidents from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush have used their national security advisers to manage America's engagements with the outside world. They paint vivid portraits of the fourteen men and one woman who have occupied the coveted office in the West Wing, detailing their very different personalities, their relations with their presidents, and their policy successes and failures.

It all started with Kennedy and Bundy, the brilliant young Harvard dean who became the nation's first modern national security adviser. While Bundy served Kennedy well, he had difficulty with his successor. Lyndon Johnson needed reassurance more than advice, and Bundy wasn't always willing to give him that. Thus the basic lesson -- the president sets the tone and his aides must respond to that reality.

The man who learned the lesson best was someone who operated mainly in the shadows. Brent Scowcroft was the only adviser to serve two presidents, Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush. Learning from others' failures, he found the winning formula: gain the trust of colleagues, build a collaborative policy process, and stay close to the president. This formula became the gold standard -- all four national security advisers who came after him aspired to be "like Brent."

The next president and national security adviser can learn not only from success, but also from failure. Rice stayed close to George W. Bush -- closer perhaps than any adviser before or since. But her closeness did not translate into running an effective policy process, as the disastrous decision to invade Iraq without a plan underscored. It would take years, and another national security aide, to persuade Bush that his Iraq policy was failing and to engineer a policy review that produced the "surge."

The national security adviser has one tough job. There are ways to do it well and ways to do it badly. Daalder and Destler provide plenty of examples of both. This book is a fascinating look at the personalities and processes that shape policy and an indispensable guide to those who want to understand how to operate successfully in the shadow of the Oval Office.

Up close and personal

In the Shadow of the Oval Office is an impressive summary of the duties, inner-workings, and conflicts inherit in the role of National Security Adivsor. The authors, Ivo Daalder and I.m Destler write with a brillant command of the subject matter and without political agenda. The narrative is remarkably consistent in style; one would think there was a single author, not two.

What impressed, and somewhat frightened, this reviewer is how much the effectiveness, or lack there of, the National Security Advisor is based upon personality of the NSA and the presonality of the President he or she serves. If there is a single thesis in this book, it would be that the country is well-served when there is good match between NSA and the President, and the country, if not the world, is poorly served if there is poor match.

But Daadler and Destler are primarily not interested in advancing an academic theory, rather they are more interested in just telling the story correctly. The reader sees how national policies are developed in the context of management styles and inter-personal dynamics involved as well as the relevant historical perspective.

In short, In the Shadow of the Oval Office is a triumphant combination of polictical analysis, historical re-telling, and character study.

The Real "West Wing"

Ivo H. Daalder and I.M. Destler have written an impressive book that readers of all backgrounds and levels of expertise will find engaging. They examine the role of the National Security Advisor in the making of U.S. foreign policy. They start their account with the tenure of McGeorge Bundy in the Kennedy White House. There is some historical background about the role of the National Security Council and the role of the men filling the position under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, but it was Bundy who pioneered the role. This focus slights the achievements of four men that served under Eisenhower, but there is no getting around the fact that the office was weaker then.

Daalder and Destler's thesis that the National Security Advisor's role is a function of his relationship with the President--or to be more accurate, the President's relationship with the advisor-and that this is the source of their influence and power seems fairly straight forward. Bundy is living proof of this argument. He was a key player in Washington under Kennedy, but never had a good relationship with Lyndon Johnson and left the White House in 1966.

There are numerous strengths to this book. The most important is that Daalder and Destler are gifted writers. Too many other scholars would have turned their text into something ponderous, but these two make it an interesting, compelling read that is gripping. In this sense, they have skills similar to those of a novelist. Their research is impressive--they found obscure material on topics that this reviewer has written about but never knew existed--yet they avoid getting caught up in the details of it all. Neither author is an historian and they seem to prefer discussing the more recent administrations. Their analysis is only adequate in the beginning, but gets much stronger as they move forward in time.

Managing Foreign Policy From the White House

The flap cover summary states that this book will provide "an indispensable guide to those who want to understand how to operate successfully in the shadow of the Oval Office." Similarly, Richard Holbrooke endorses the book as "essential reading for the new administration." Daadler and Destler's Profiles of the National Security Advisers and the Presidents They Served is thus presented as a how-to book, a manual for statecraft that will provide a job description for those who intend to fill the White House's posting. They list the qualities presidents should look for when choosing their close diplomatic adviser. They make a ranking of past national security advisers according to influence, administrative efficiency, and overall performance. The primary target of the book therefore seems to be foreign policy operatives and Washington insiders. Based on historical records and personal recollections by the main protagonists who tried to distill the lessons from their experience, it provides a unique perspective on American diplomacy by people who played a central role in shaping policy decisions and determining outcomes.

Oddly as it sounds, I would also recommend this book to people involved in business policy and human resource management. There is a strong case to be made that history books offer better lessons and insights to business executives than management textbooks. For a start, they are better written, and they offer a more gripping narrative. The retention rate of hearing about a good story will always be better than going through a shopping list of dos and don'ts. People generally feel more passionate about politics and international events than about the business pages of their newspaper. History involves larger-than-life characters and puts into view the most salient aspects of human nature. Management often shuns the emotional aspects of human behavior and focuses on the rational side. But companies, like countries and polities, are driven by deeply felt emotions such as love, ambition, and greed. Politics puts the human nature back into view, and reconciles us with our inner selves.

On a more practical side, historians get access to archival records, key testimonies, and contrasting viewpoints. Management scholars, for their part, are often denied access to the inner working of corporations, and have to rely on dry financial statements or meaningless questionnaires. The corporation is a black box, and drastically filters the flow of information that trickles out of it. News and communiqués are carefully drafted for public relations purposes. Corporate lore and business cases are of little relevance for those unconnected to a particular workplace. By contrast, the U.S. government is a city built upon a hill, and the White House is a house of glass whose processes and records are made fully transparent. Political scientists and historians will always have an edge over management scholars in terms of access to information, contextualization of public events, and relevance of their research output for the public at large. Bureaucracies often draw lessons from the corporate world and try to adapt models developed by management specialists. Conversely, private sector managers can also learn from the experience of policymakers, and governmental decision-making on foreign affairs issues provides what can be characterized as the epitome of decision.

Like business strategy, effective foreign policymaking is defined by people, process, and purpose. Attention to people means more than filling a job description. There has to be a good fit between the president and his national security adviser. The most famous pairs in the White House--Kennedy and Bundy, Nixon and Kissinger, Carter and Brzezinski, Bush Sr. and Scowcroft, Clinton and Sandy Berger, Bush Jr. and Condi Rice--illustrate this necessary convergence of character and compatibility of style. The NSC adviser serves at the pleasure of the president. He is the first to brief him in the morning, the closest at hand when crisis situations arise. They are bound to operate in a compatible way.

What works with one president does not necessarily suit another. The same McGeorge Bundy who meshed so well with president Kennedy was clearly out of sync with his successor, and he left to be replaced by Walt Rostow, who had a better relationship with Johnson. Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger also shared many proclivities. Both were foreign policy aficionados, eager to put their stamp on the world. They had a similar realist view of how the world operated, one in which power and its balance between states was of primary importance. Both harbored secret anxieties and deep insecurities that made their combination ultimately destructive. Sometimes, as in the Carter-Brzezinski combination, a relationship flourishes because of differences. Brzezinski strived on conflict; Carter was at heart a conciliator. Similarly, Bush and Rice had little in common, but they proved remarkably compatible.

Beyond personal fit between the president and his adviser, White House officials need to build a good team spirit, both within the NSC staff and with the other cabinet secretaries. This was not always the case. Kissinger famously left the state secretary out of the loop in his secret dealings with China. Brzezinski's views on critical issues, notably on how to deal with the Soviet Union, often clashed with those of Cyrus Vance, Carter's secretary of state. Being generally the most hard-line of senior administration players, Brzezinski actively and visibly sought to "toughen" policies. Other tensions within the national security team were manifested in Caspar Weinberger's debilitating feud with George Shultz under Reagan, or Colin Powell's powerlessness against the combination of Rumsfeld and Cheney's war planning. As Nixon once complained, "it would be goddam easy to run this office if you didn't have to deal with people." Team spirit and employee morale were not a priority for all national security advisers: witness the joke which pretended that "working for Kissinger was like being a mushroom: because you are kept in the dark all the time, because you get a lot of s*** dumped on you, and, in the end, you get canned."

Putting in place an effective policy process is a crucial responsibility of any NSC adviser. Kennedy and McGeorge Bundy originated the three defining features of the function: the adviser's handling of the president's day-to-day foreign affairs business; the staff recruited among the best experts to serve the current administration; and the setting of a Situation Room with access to diplomatic cables and security information in real time. Kissinger added to it the secrecy in all political undertakings and the relentless cultivation of the press. After Kissinger, all agreed that the national security adviser's role was not a "policy-making job": it was to "facilitate the process of decision-making".

According to Brent Scowcroft, who wrote the definitive manual on the subject following the Iran-Contras investigation, the adviser should focus on coordination while the secretary of state (and other cabinet members) focus on implementation and operations. There is an inherent tension between the role of policy coordinator and that of senior adviser to the president: "It is always more exciting to be the adviser, but if you are not the honest broker, you don't have the confidence of the other members of the NSC." To ensure fairness, the adviser's activities as policy spokesman needed to be curtailed: he had to cultivate, in Anthony Lake's words, a "passion for anonymity".

Often described as best performer in the job which he held twice, Brent Scowcroft had a winning formula for effectiveness that was picked up by his successors and that consisted of three elements: first, gain the confidence of colleagues; second, run a transparent and collegial process; and third, secure power through proximity with the president. Remarkably, Scowcroft's influence did not so much diminish as augment that of James Baker, and he was able to avoid the usual conflicts of policy and power. Scowcroft might see the president more than anyone else, but everyone could count on having their views reflected during the decision process. In the words of one of his aides, "the work-to-bulls*** ratio was better in this administration than any other, and less of your calories went into the bureaucratic game."

Of course, national security advisers can only be as effective and successful as presidents enable them to be. For the Scowcroft model to work, you needed an active president, who was deeply familiar with and interested in the world. This brings us to the third element of effective management: purpose and leadership. As the book makes it clear, this leadership was not always effectively displayed. There were a series of policy blunders which originated in the NSC and were not effectively corrected by the adviser. The Bay of Pigs fiasco was "one of history's few pure failures," a result of poor planning and preparation. On the positive side, it led to a far better, more structured decision process when Kennedy faced a graver challenge in the Cuban missile crisis eighteen month later. Even more egregious was the secret diversion of funds to the Nicaraguan Contras by John Poindexter under Reagan. Similarly, Condoleeza Rice was too close to George W. Bush to act as effective counterweight by asking questions, probing assumptions, and challenging conclusions.

Filling the NSC adviser slot does not leave room for error. Daadler and Destler's book offer a careful manual on how to constitute a national security team and make it effective, with obvious implications for policy-making and the pursuit of the national interest. The job of national security adviser is simply too important to be left to chance. The nation cannot afford inexperience or incompetence in this particular position. The consequence can quite literally be catastrophic--like the Iran-Contra scandal that nearly destroyed the Reagan presidency. As mentioned earlier, there are also more general lessons to be learned for people involved in building teams and managing projects. There also, executive search and staffing decisions should not be left to chance. Job descriptions should not be considered in isolation from, but as a combination of, talents and personal traits as well as "people skills". The management team is more than an addition of individuals, and each brings a distinctive contribution to the group dynamic. People need to be made compatible, mesh nicely within organizational structures, and operate in sync.

Great combinations that worked in the past can provide models for future endeavors. The lessons of these models should be reflected upon and distilled within the organization. Teams also need to learn from their errors, and to correct behavior on a short feedback loop. People issues should not be considered in isolation, but should be linked to process and to purpose. A great personal relationship or ebullient team spirit cannot compensate for poor process management or a lack of strategic direction. When looking for role models and practical lessons, managers should look beyond the narrow scope of the business world and broaden their compass to include national leaders and policymakers. Conversely, statesmen and senior officials should not overlook management issues, and should engage in staffing decisions in a principled way. In the Shadow of the Oval Office will help them to do so.

The Starship Rhea has discovered a cluster of carbon planets that seems to be the source of the quantum energies rippling through a section of space. A landing party finds unusual life-forms inhabiting one of the planets. One officer, Lieutenant T'Ryssa Chen -- a half-Vulcan -- makes a tenuous connection with them. The Borg descend to the planet, and just as Chen accepts that she will be assimilated, the lieutenant is whisked two thousand light-years away.

A quantum slipstream -- instantaneous transportation -- is controlled by these beings in the cluster, and in the heart of the cluster there is now a Borg ship. Cut off from the rest of the Borg collective, the Einstein cannot be allowed to rejoin it. For the sake of humanity, the Borg cannot gain access to quantum slipstream technology.

Starfleet Command gives Captain Picard carte blanche: do whatever he must to help the beings in the cluster, and stop the Einstein no matter the cost.

"Are we there yet?"

Lieutenant Commander Dawn Blair rolled her eyes at the question. "Are you going to ask that question every morning, Trys?"

"At least until we get there," T'Ryssa Chen replied, brushing her shaggy bangs out of her eyes. The gesture briefly revealed one of the elegantly pointed ears that she usually kept hidden under her shoulder-length black hair.

"You're just hoping to annoy me into letting you go on the away team," Blair said.

"Is it working?"

"Mmm...no."

"Aw, come on, Dawn!" T'Ryssa moaned. "A whole cluster full of carbon planets, and you expect me to sit up here manning a boring old console?"

"Well, it might help if you remembered to call me 'Commander' when we're on duty, Lieutenant."

T'Ryssa's slanted eyebrows twisted in a way that Blair still sometimes found incongruous. She knew the younger woman had been raised by her human mother and had barely known her Vulcan father, but it was hard to shake off one's expectations of Vulcans. Which was probably why T'Ryssa defied those expectations so aggressively. "Right, I keep forgetting."

"On purpose. You always have to be such a nonconformist, Trys. That's why you're still a jg at twenty-six."

"I don't have to be," T'Ryssa countered. "I'm just very good at it. Gotta play to your strengths, you know."

She grew serious, or as close as she ever came. "And I'm not very good at sitting still in a cubbyhole, which is why you've gotta let me go down there and do some science! When we get there," she added. "Come on, Daw -- Commander Dawn, sir, ma'am -- " At the science officer's glare, she started over. "I mean, this is a Luna-class ship, right? All about crew diversity and cross-cultural synergies and exploring new approaches? Which means, in short, we're a ship full of nonconformists, and proud of it. Nonconforming -- ity -- ism -- is how we get the job done around here, right?" T'Ryssa bent her knees and clasped her hands in supplication. "So how about it, O Dawn, commander of my heart? Pleeeeeze?" She actually batted her eyelids.

Blair sighed, knowing T'Ryssa would keep this up until she relented. "Okay! Okay. Janyl can man the console, you can go on the away team and out of my hair."

"Oh, thank you, thank you! And such lovely hair it is, my commandress."

"Don't push it," Blair said. She was self-conscious about her hair, an unruly mass of cinnamon-brown waves that she usually kept confined within a bun or French braid while on duty, though Derek from environmental engineering insisted it was the most gorgeous thing he'd ever seen. Still, she couldn't help smirking at T'Ryssa's antics. Blair was too soft a touch to be any good at keeping her in line, which was probably to T'Ryssa's detriment in the long run. But giving her this away mission could help improve her career prospects. The half-Vulcan woman may not have been very good at practicing Starfleet discipline or respecting the chain of command, but she was a good scientist with a knack for understanding alien behaviors, sentient and otherwise. If the anomalous biosigns coming from the carbon planets of the NGC 6281 star cluster were correct and there was complex life there, she could be genuinely useful.

"Anyway," Blair went on, "we have to get there first."

T'Ryssa sagged. "I am so sick of this. We hit a zone of altered subspace, we get knocked out of warp, we spend five hours recalibrating the warp engines, we make it four hours before the structure of subspace changes, and we drop out of warp again. I swear I'm getting motion sick. Are we getting any closer to figuring out a pattern behind these distortions?"

Blair shook her head. "Only that they seem connected to the energy emissions from the carbon planets. And that those emissions seem to be coming from beneath the planets' surfaces, not localized around any of the biosigns."

"What about the cosmozoans?"

"We can't confirm that the energy readings from them are connected. It could be interference from the subspace distortions."

T'Ryssa sighed, and Blair shared in her disappointment. As their sister ship Titan had confirmed half a year back, spacegoing life-forms were prone to inhabit star-formation regions. The open clusters Rhea was currently surveying were located be-tween the Orion and Carina Arms, removed from the star-formation zones that defined the arms of the galaxy, but they were still fairly young (as all open clusters were, for eventually their components were scattered by gravitational interactions with other stars and nebulae). NGC 6281 itself, a clump of a hundred or so young stars sharing a volume of space barely fifteen light-years in diameter, was less than a quarter billion years old and still retained a faint remnant of the nebula from which it had formed, so finding spacegoing organisms here was not a complete surprise. But the cosmozoans detected in this particular cluster were as strange as the space they occupied, giving off anomalous energy readings and biosignatures and seeming to appear and disappear unpredictably from sensors. Getting close to any of them, however, would take considerable time unless Blair and chief engineer Lorlinna could devise some way to adjust the warp engines to cope with the inexplicably shifting subspace geometry of this cluster. If they were unable to do so, then Captain Bazel might decide to turn back after the survey of the nearest component of the cluster, NGC 6281-34, and move on to the next open cluster once the Rhea slogged its way back to normal space.

It all depended on what they found on System 34's planets and whether it was exciting or mysterious enough to warrant surveying any of the other systems in the cluster. But it would be at least another day before they reached that system, a system they could reach in a few hours under normal circumstances.

Dawn Blair found herself agreeing with her friend's sentiment, if only in the privacy of her thoughts. Are we there yet?

T'Ryssa Chen hated going through the transporter. It wasn't that she was afraid of it or anything; rather, she was ticklish, and being transported felt like being tickled from the inside. People kept telling her she was imagining things, that there was no untoward sensation involved with transporting other than a slight tingling numbness, but she knew what she felt. Maybe it was a side effect of her hybrid nervous system; maybe all human-Vulcan blends had the same reaction but were too disciplined to admit it. Or maybe the transporter gods had just decided to pick on her. She tried to shake it off once she materialized, a convulsive move like she was trying to brush spiders off her body, but the heavy EV suit she wore hampered the movement.

Not that she regretted wearing the suit in this environment. NGC 6281-34 III, like most of the planetary bodies that long-range sensors had detected in the cluster, was a carbon planet: a world where carbon was the most abundant element in its mineral composition. In carbon-rich protoplanetary disks, graphite, carbides, and other carbon compounds tended to solidify sooner than the silicates that made up the bulk of normal planets, producing worlds with iron cores, carbide mantles, and crusts of graphite and diamond. The resultant surface chemistry was oxygen-poor, with tarry hydrocarbon seas and an atmosphere of carbon monoxide and methane.

And it looks about as inviting as it sounds, Trys thought as she looked around her through the helmet visor. The rocky ground on which they stood was dark and crumbly, like a carbonaceous asteroid. The depressions in the surface were filled with pools of tar, black against gray-brown. The hazy blue-green sky was smudged with clouds of graphite dust.

As First Officer Sekmal and the rest of the away team deployed their tricorders, T'Ryssa struck a pose as though planting an invisible flag and proclaimed, "I dub this planet Pencilvania!"

Sekmal turned to glare at her, raising an eyebrow in that way that Vulcans seemed to be specially trained for. "Explain."

"Pencil. You know. Old writing implement? Used graphite? It's why graphite's called that? Because people wrote with it?" Sekmal simply continued to glare until Trys sighed. "Never mind," she said, taking out her tricorder. Vulcans. For all their claims of emotionlessness, the Vulcans on Rhea were consistent in their disdain for Trys herself, as though her biology somehow required her to live up to their cultural standards. She could never see the logic in that.

"I thought it was funny," said Paul Janiss, smiling at her through his helmet. Trys gave him a wan smile of gratitude, knowing it was more likely that he just wanted to flatter her into sleeping with him again. Not that she wouldn't be interested in doing so, at least on a purely physical level, but she preferred more sincerity in her praise, and in her men.

"Anyway," Paul went on, "it's not like we're going to have any other fun on this dump of a planet. Bleakest hole I ever saw."

"Don't dismiss it so quickly," said Thyyshev zh'Skenat, the Andorian geologist. "As the galaxy ages and supernovae inject more carbon into the interstellar medium, the ratio of carbon planets to oxygen planets will increase. In a billion years or so, all new planets may be carbon worlds."

"Thanks, Thyyshev. You just gave me a reason to be glad I'm not immortal."

"How do you know?" Trys asked.

"Know what?"

"That you're not immortal? I mean, there's only one way to know for sure, isn't there?"

It took Paul a moment. "Oh! Good one."

"On the other hand," Trys went on as if he hadn't spoken, "there's no way to prove anyone really is immortal either. Just that they haven't died yet. Kind of a meaningless category, really. Maybe it needs a better name. Like 'mortality challenged.'"

Thyyshev's antennae twisted under his specially designed helmet. "Aren't you supposed to be doing your duty...

HMMM Nice Try but Not Quite....

First let me say that i'm a 3rd generation Trekker and up-to-date on all of the most current ST movies, books, comics, conventions, exhibits etc. etc. etc. This review will not be written in "trek speak". So enjoy!

This book is hard to review because it sucked but at the same time its necessary. Why did it suck? Well, I'm sorry but I like my Vulcans to be vulcans Sarek, Tuvok, Spock those are my boys and I love it!! So to have this Vulcan who doesn't act like a vulcan is a little jarring. Plus to put it mildly the book was a little boring in parts. To have a main character be a goof off and a silly goof off makes me wonder exactly who in "star fleet land" is vetting these applicants. I mean was she related to a high ranking admiral? Then, Picard to me was a tad bit whinny. I'm all for putting emotions and exploring the character but he's the captain of the flagship of the fleet is he really that petty?? (HMMMM to answer my own question he does get a little crazy when it comes to the borg). I actually like the new security chief she's pretty cool, but again she's a crier. Where's Worf when you need him (OH right he's first officer - See the A Time To series) I miss Data!! When is Geordi going to move out of engineering?? Everyone else is moving up why is he standing still??? (okay don't mean to use this to vent back to the book)

Why do I think this book is necessary? Well I just ordered the Destiny trilogy and from the reviews (and my friends) you would need to know whats going on in the Borgs head and why Picard is even more intense. (SPOILER ALERT - I should say why the Picard's are even more intense)

So all in all I would say if you're an avid trek fan and you can follow "trek world" bypass this book unless you just have to read every story (like me)!!

The best of the TNG relaunch so far!!!

Ok so lot of other reviews give this book bad to only ok and i can see why. Its the borg again but this is by far the best TNG Relaunch yet mainly because Mr. Bennett goes into more detail than the crisis of the (week)or month but we get a little about the personal with the charaters Like Picard and Beverly. We also get a little into Gordi and learn about how B4 is doing. We also get 2 new Charaters one is the new scurity chief Jasminder Choudhury and a half Vulcun-Human T'Ryssa she does not follow her Vulcun side so she is funny akward and a little annying but it also makes her real more than any auther so far in the TNG relunch.

The truth hurts, but it's also REALLY funny...

This book confirms everything you suspected was true about how politicians get elected in the country. It has the tone of a P.J. O'Rourke novel, hilarious and all too real at the same time because it happened. I laughed all the way through it, and then watched Hardball with Chris Matthews in a whole new light once I was done. One reviewer asked "who has ever heard of this guy?" and that is exactly the point! These nameless, faceless operatives and consultants are legion in both political parties and they are the ones who actually decide what candidates say, do, wear, etc. Raymond was a very high level player at the Republican National Committee, chief of staff to a republican congressman and ran numerous campaigns at the national level, he saw it all from the inside and it's not pretty. A great read, I highly recommend.

Hilarious hijinks

If you loved the book or movie THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, you'll love this book. I'm a political junky, but i've shared the book with someone who isn't, and he agreed with me this is laugh-out loud funny. For those who read TalkingPoints memo or DailyKos et al, you'll remember this story about New Hampshire phone jamming in the 2004. This book gives you real behind-the-scenes stuff on the political trenches from backwater NJ campaigns to the RNC and the major leagues: presidential politics. Makes you wonder: what's happening in 2008?

Wonder why they don't want you to read this book?

This is a colorful, frank, and profane memoir of seamy politics by a pro whose Republican pals threw him under the bus when one of their dirty tricks (and not the dirtiest one in his book) started making some headlines.

If you want to see what the top of the Republican world looks like to an RNC hotshot (and Raymond was picked by the RNC to teach their up-and-comers just how to do business) this book is for you. "If you don't know who the sucker in the room is, it's you." See Karl Rove in a glass cage orchestrating his minions "like Darth Vader in his life-support pod." Hear GWB make the same joke again and again with staffers (and no one else) laughing each time. Observe the surprisingly seamy tactics of DCI Group's Tony Feather and Tom Synhorst.

Allen Raymond spent fifteen years on the Karl Rove side of Republican politics. This book details many stunts more colorful than phone-jamming. Deceptive robocalls to Democrats from "scary black men" or "actors putting on thick Spanish accents" worked wonders at keeping them home on Election Day. Swapping soft money for hard--funneling GOP dollars to "spoiler" Democratic candidates--engineering repeat contributions from donors who had already given their legal limit--Raymond names names and shows how each trick works. During one Superbowl, Allen masterminded a midgame annoying phone call to--maybe you just have to read the book to understand that one.

Probably the biggest reason that GOP insiders want you not to read this book is that it showcases the in-crowd's complete contempt for their supporters -- "the Jesus-loves-guns crowd" -- "the knuckle-draggers, the gunnies, and the committed ideologue nuts." "The mouth-breathers who who decide GOP primaries might allow people to steal their money and send their children to impossible wars but they'll cut no such slack for baby-killers."

Chances are "mouth-breathers" won't read Raymond's book. I hope you will. The Senate Judiciary Committee can't seem to get off the dime to release the much-needed Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act so it can get voted on. Maybe this book will help more people see the light about why it is needed.

From the surprising twist that made me laugh out loud at the end of the first chapter, I knew that "Bound South" was about subverting the South's stereotypes. Here's a book that reveals the realities obscured by the carefully polished surfaces--the family secrets and scandals, the suppressed yearnings and emotions, the confidences trusted only to best friends. And yet this novel's characters feel "bound" by their Southern upbringings, which create a fascinating tension as they strive for greater possibilities in their lives.

The story switches back and forth between the first-person voices of three women: Louise Parker's creativity and individuality are hindered by the expectations of her as an affluent Southern matron. Louise quietly envies the greater freedom and opportunities open to her teenage daughter, Caroline, who seems overwhelmed by it all. And Louise's unexpected involvement in the life of Missy, her housekeeper's evangelical daughter, adds an "Upstairs, Downstairs" element to the tale.

"Bound South" is funny and charming, a compelling page-turner that's surprisingly moving towards the end. While it subverts the south's old pretenses, it also celebrates what's best in its changing culture.

Good read but ended suddenly

Like the other reviewers, I did enjoy the book. The characters evolve over time and the author has a great grasp of what it is like to live in the South - the good and the improving. My only complaint (and it is a big one for me) is that the book ended abruptly. I was reading, waiting for some sort of denouement, and it just ended. I will read this author's next book, but I may read the end first. :)

I am Bound South

I loved this book!I really didn't want it to end. It was so fun and playful at times and at other's very real and meaningful. I laughed with Louise and Tiny and felt deep in my heart the struggles of Caroline to find herself. I felt like I had met some of the characters before and longed to know some of the others in real life. I loved the different looks at the women in this novel, each attempting to find herself in different stages of her life. You learn something about yourself, your mother and even your grandmother through watching these women evolve. I will share this book with the people that I care about; to share the beautiful complex picture of the South and the families in it that Susan White has so accurately reflected and enhanced for our enjoyment.

New Orleans
Present day

"Stupid...safety lock," Holly Ashwin muttered as she fiddled with the nozzle of the pepper spray in her bag.

With her free hand, she pushed up her glasses, casting another nervous glance over her shoulder. She'd thought she heard footsteps behind her in the night. Was she being followed -- or paranoid?

For months, she'd had the sense that someone was watching her. Yet strangely it hadn't bothered her before. She couldn't explain it, but there had been an almost soothing quality to the presence she'd felt.

Tonight, all that had changed.

She sensed raw menace, and wished she hadn't made the walk from the parking lot to Gibson Hall by herself. Usually her boyfriend escorted her to class, but Tim was at a symposium presenting their latest paper -- alone, because her condition made it nearly impossible for her to travel.

The manicured lawns on the way to her classroom were unusually empty. No doubt there were widespread parties tonight celebrating the full moon, which hung heavy and yellow in the black sky.

There was enough light that she could see the bushes behind her trembling. In a growing panic, she broke off the nozzle of the spray.

"Crap." She hastily abandoned her one weapon, tempted to snag one of the pill bottles in the pocket beside it for a dose of relief. Instead, she increased her pace toward her destination, the math building, brightly lit like a beacon.

Almost there. Her heels clicked along on the sidewalk -- though they never landed on a crack, even in her rush. Apparently, obsessive-compulsive disorder was panicproof....

She checked her watch. She was on time, of course, but she was late enough that her Remedial Math 101 students would be in the classroom already.

A few yards left. Almost to safety....

Once she'd made it up the six stone steps to the doors, she exhaled in relief. Inside, the hall was ablaze with fluorescent light. Made it.

Her class was in the second room on the right and would be filled with thirty-three very large and very loyal Tulane football players. Anyone thinking to frighten her would soon learn how a tackle dummy felt at season's end.

Holly's colleagues believed she'd drawn the short straw to have to teach Digits for Idjits, as some of the instructors called it. But Holly had actually volunteered for jock duty.

If she was to teach math, then why not instruct the ones who had exponentially more to learn?

And in truth, they were on their best behavior ninetynine percent of the time. Though each Tuesday and Thursday night, some of the players always got there early to scribble sprawling messages for her on the blackboard. A fellow instructor had related to Holly that "the boys" -- who were all of five or six years younger than she was -- enjoyed watching her erase things in "those skirts."

Holly wore old-fashioned pencil skirts with hemlines past her knees. Would she never catch a break?

She wondered what she'd be erasing tonight. Some of the past offerings included "Got it bad, sooo bad, I'm hot for teacher," "I've been a naughty boy, Ms. Ashwin," and "Professor + Ginger = Holly Ashwin." They'd crossed the l's to make them t's.

So far she didn't think any of them had noticed her need to erase every millimeter of writing on the board, or to arrange the chalk in the tray into perfect trios, even breaking a stick to achieve a multiple of three....

Outside the door to her room, she took a calming breath and smoothed her tight chignon. After ascertaining that the clasp of her strand of pearls was directly in the center of the back of her neck, she tugged each sleeve of her twinset sweater until the ends perfectly hit her wristbones. She checked the backs of her earrings, then opened the door.

Empty. Every chair sat empty.

CLASS IS CANCELED was scrawled across the board. They'd gone too far this time.

Or maybe it wasn't them? She swallowed, whirling around.

Rough cloth covered her face, reeking of fumes, drowning out her scream.

Just as her eyelids slid shut and her body went limp, she heard the unholy roar of a man in the distance.

Rogue demons have my female.

As Cade's old Ford truck tore through traffic to yet another demon lair, he grappled to control the rage his breed of demon was known for.

They've taken Holly....

Almost one year ago, Cade had crossed paths with Holly Ashwin and had recognized the human as his own fated female. Unable to claim a mortal, he'd had to content himself by following her, guarding her.

Which was the only reason why he'd been there when a group of demons had traced her, teleporting her to gods knew where. But they'd hunted on the campus; surely their lair would be near.

Why would they want her? Because she was an innocent? Then they'd picked the wrong virgin -- Cade would hang them by their own entrails and watch them dance if they touched so much as a hair on her head.

His phone rang just as he surged past a visibly drunk driver. When drunks drove slowly, it was exactly like they whispered -- noticeably.

"What?" he barked in answer. Tonight he was supposed to receive the details of his latest job. It'd be the most important one he'd had since becoming a mercenary centuries ago.

"I've just left the meeting," his brother Rydstrom said. "I have the information we need."

Riding the bumper in front of him, tempted to give it a tap, Cade asked absently, "So who's the pay?"

"The client is Groot the Metallurgist."

Normally that would have had Cade raising his brows. Groot was the half brother of Omort the Deathless. "He intends to help us against Omort?" Cade's truck overtook another car, nearly trading paint with it.

"Groot's crafted a sword that can kill him."

Then it would be the only one in existence that could. Omort the Deathless didn't come by his name without reason. "What's the job?"

"He wants us to find the Vessel and deliver her to him before the next full moon."

The Vessel. Every Accession, a female from the Lore would come into sexual maturity. Her child would be a warrior of either ultimate evil or of ultimate good -- depending on which way the father leaned.

A car weaved in front of Cade. "Son of a -- "

"What are you doing?" Rydstrom demanded.

"Traffic." He didn't want his brother to know anything was off. Cade had told him that he would stop watching Holly. Though they both suspected she was his female, a future with her was impossible.

Humans were forbidden to demons. Because they never survived the initial claiming.

But Cade hadn't been able to stop himself from watching her from afar, studying her, growing more and more fascinated with the young mortal. Becoming more convinced that she was his.

He knew it was ridiculous. He was an ancient immortal, a brutal mercenary, head of a crew of soldiers of fortune. And yet Cade looked forward to nothing -- except seeing her.

Holly went through her life having no idea that she was the highlight of a millennium-old demon's disappointing existence....

This new job was supposed to be the last chance for him and Rydstrom to reclaim the crown. If Rydstrom found out Cade wasn't "on," the two of them would be heading for another of their infamous house-killing brawls. Cade used to enjoy working off his anger. Now the idea wearied him.

"How are we supposed to find the Vessel?" Cade asked.

"I was told it's a Valkyrie this time around."

"Handing over a Valkyrie for the use of an evil sorcerer -- you're not worried about our alliance with them?"

"I'm going to take a page from your book and say that what they don't know won't hurt them."

"They will know. Nïx will be able to see this." Nïx, the half-mad Valkyrie soothsayer, had helped Rydstrom and Cade in the past. In fact, she'd put together this deal, though she'd given them no indication who they'd be working for.

Cade had talked to her less than a week ago about Holly. Nïx had revealed nothing about tonight.

"If Nïx didn't see that the Vessel would be one of her own before, she might not now. Besides, it can't be helped," Rydstrom said. "Nothing is more important than this job. It was Nïx herself who vowed this was our last chance to defeat Omort."

"Do you have a location on the target?"

"Groot's oracles have been searching for her. As expected, she's here in this city."

The coming Accession was already pushing and pulling all the factions together in mystickal hotspots like New Orleans.

"And we're not the only ones who want her," Rydstrom added. "Oracles, witches, and sorcerers are all scrying for her."

Cade could imagine. "You got a name?"

"No name on her. But we have her last known whereabouts, a place called the Hall of the Son of Gib. I know it sounds like typical soothsayerese, but it's a lead."

A chill slithered up Cade's spine. No. No way. The Hall of the Son of Gib. Or Gibson Hall -- the mathematics building on the Tulane campus.

Holly wasn't a Valkyrie; yet those demons might have seen her in the predicted location and mistaken her for one. She had the right delicate features and slight build. They could have assumed she was the Vessel.

Only one local demon faction would have had the resources to determine the Vessel's location before Cade and Rydstrom -- the Order of Demonaeus.

"We go for the Valkyrie tonight," Rydstrom said. "I'll be back at the house in two hours. Meet me then."

Two hours. Even if Cade was tempted to ask his brother for help with the Demonaeus, there wouldn't be time to wait for him. "Yeah, will do." Click.

The wide wheels of his truck screeched as Cade cut across three lanes of traffic, careening over the median to speed back in the other direction.

He knew where the Order of Demonaeus was located, had been forced to convene with their kind on more than one occasion.

Lovin' Me Some Demon Horns!

Cadeon the Kingmaker - King Rydstrom's brother and heir to the throne of the rage demons - has made some mistakes in his 900 year existence. The foremost and by far the worst mistake was made when he was a young man, the day he cost his brother the throne. Instead of defending Tornin, the king's stronghold, Cadeon was instead racing to see to the welfare of his foster family thus allowing his brother's kingdom to be overthrown by Mort the Deathless, an evil sorcerer. And by his very namesake, Mort is deathless. No traditional Lore means of killing - beheading or fire - will ensure his death.

Cadeon, guilt ridden over his betrayal to his kingdom, vows to his brother that he will get Rydstrom's crown back. 900 years later and Cadeon is still trying to make do on his promise. As mercenary, Cadeon has crowned many a king, hence his title - the Kingmaker, but he always seems to fail with his original vow to his brother. But fate has bestowed upon the brothers of the Woede, a chance. All that Cadeon and Rydstrom must do is find the Vessel, a female of the Lore that will birth a child of either ultimate evil or good. Groot the Metallurgist, Mort's brother, requests the Vessel and in return he will forge a sword that will kill Mort the Deathless.

Unfortunately for Cade, fate can never be kind without exacting a price. The Vessel just so happens to be Cade's mate, Holly Ashwin - a human forbidden to his kind, whom he has been keeping watch over for the past year. Demons may recognize their mate but they won't know for sure until they attempt, in other words, have sex with them. During this process a demon will turn into his demonic form - which is huge; their skin color changes and their horns straighten. They also bite the female between the neck and shoulder, injecting with their fangs a stunning agent the immobilizes her. Humans by nature cannot withstand the attempt without possible death, therefore Cade must resign himself to the fact that he and Holly can never be together. Cadeon uses this resignation to force himself into accepting the job of collecting Holly and delivering her to Groot thereby retrieving the desired sword.

Holly Ashwin has issues. Suffering from acute OCD and mild agoraphobia, Holly can only feel comfortable in either her loft or the college campus where she is simultaneously completing her doctorate and teaching. In order to focus, everything around her must be organized in three or multiples of. In addition, Holly will only eat prepacked food where no human transference has taken place. Lastly, Holly has sexual issues. She's a twenty-six year old virgin but not for lack of trying. Unfortunately Holly has scared off the two males that she attempted to have sex with. Both times she became wild, uncontrollable even, to the point where the possibility of injuring the man was very real. So Holly has abstained. She does currently have a boyfriend, Tim, of two years. It is definitely a cerebral relationship as opposed to a physical one but the two do plan to get married. This plan however is officially halted when she is abducted by demons, struck by lightening, and thereby resurrecting her Valkyrie genes from dormancy.

Cadeon is just as surprised to see Holly with her signature Valkyrie silver eyes and sharp claws. But he still sticks with his original deal to take her to Groot. Holly, suspicious by nature is wary of trusting the hot demon but all she wants is to go back to her organized old life and when Cade dangles the opportunity to remain a mortal, she jumps at the chance. Cade tells her that Groot can stop the transformation (a complete lie) and since he is already on his way to meet with the sorcerer he'll take her along with him.

What follows is a steady unfolding of passion between Cadeon and Holly. Although the two couldn't be more different, their attraction is undeniable.

Although not my favorite adddition to the Immortals After Dark series, it was still a worthwhile and fun read. One thing I am looking forward to is Rydstrom's book, 'To Kiss a Demon King' which comes out in January 2009. There is a major life altering event that happens to Rydstrom in 'Dark Desires After Dusk' and he seems a totally different demon by the end. Exciting!

Dark Desires of Dissapointment

Cadeon Woede is a rage demon who holds the occupation of mercenary. He is desperate to help put his brother back on the throne that rightfully belongs to him, and it's because of Cadeon that his brother doesn't have the throne to begin with. It has been 900 years of struggles for Cade to try and defeat Omort and return the throne to his brother.
A year ago Cade ran across Holly Ashwin which he realizes is his female, the one he is supposed to spend forever with, yet she is a mortal, and an immortal like himself cannot claim a mortal as their own, the initial claiming would undoubtably kill the mortal.
Holly is a professor at a local college near her home. She is obsessive with order and perfection. She is highly dependent on her medications perscribed to her for being OCD. She was adopted and all in all has led a very boring life until she is kidnapped one night in her college classroom. Her life soon becomes very complicated but none the less an excitement she never expected, and she definitely did not expect to find herself attracted to the very unusual rage demon.

Cade and Holly's story is definitely unique and different. I found it to be quite different from A Hunger Like No Other, which is Book 1 in the Immortals After Dark series, and I have to admit that I was kind of dissapointed in Dark Desires After Dusk. It is a good story but it definitely isn't one that I love or would ever consider reading again. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but in comparison to A Hunger Like No Other I found myself somewhat dissapointed. This book lacked the passion that the first in the series did not.

This KC favorite is about Cade who is a rage demon and finds Holly who is his chosen female. The guts of the book are about Cade fighting with himself because in order to save his brother's crown he has to give over his woman (Holly) to a sorcerer who will help get his brother's crown back but wants to impregnate her with the ultimate evil.

Holly, though KC did a great job of developing her character and giving us a firm understanding of who and what she is, she really annoyed me. I tried to like her, I tried to picture being her, I just didn't want to be in her shoes at all (except for the getting to be with Cade thing). She was a very weak excuse for a heroin. She has OCD and whined about things touching her water.

This is a 4 star book simply because of Cade. I love him, he is hot, tough and funny. Some of the things that come out of his mouth are crude, rude, and absolutely hilarious.

I would highly recommend this book based on the characters (though Holly annoyed me, you had a firm understanding of her), and the surrounding unconventional love story was really good. So far in this series KC has not disappointed me.
