CHAPTER 1

When He Says "Tomato,"

You Hear "I Hate You"

James and Anna are on a dinner date. The restaurant is cozy, the food delicious, and the conversation effortless. Everything is going very well, until James looks at his watch.

ANNA (warily): Going somewhere?

JAMES (slightly bemused): No, just checking the time.

ANNA: If you need to go...

JAMES: No, I really just wanted to see the time.

ANNA: Let's get the check. I need to be up early tomorrow.

JAMES: Are you sure? The caramel ice cream they serve here is out of this world.

Anna shakes her head. Exasperated, James pays the bill, and they drive home in uncomfortable silence, neither expecting to hear from the other again.

Who hasn't experienced something similar? Everything is going great and then in a flash the mood sinks. You can't quite put your finger on why, but you know what he is saying is not what you want to hear. And that's the thing about dating. Even though it's a great way to spend a Friday night, it also reveals the sometimes enormous gap between what is said by a man and what is heard by a woman and vice versa.

Yet, with a few simple tools, it's easy to crack the code and understand what the opposite sex really means. There are of course key differences in the way that men and women communicate, but both women and men are guilty of Common Thinking Errors (CTEs). These are irrational or erroneous beliefs that we hold about ourselves, another person, or a particular situation. Like when we make wrong assumptions about what other people are thinking and feeling, based on our past experiences. For example, your ex-boyfriend used to make fun of the size of your ankles, so when your new boyfriend praises you in jeans you might hear "You look great in jeans because they cover up those hideous ankles."

The point is that our thoughts are integral to the way that we relate to a situation emotionally. First we think, and then we have an emotional reaction based on that thought. Returning to the earlier example, when Anna saw James looking at his watch, she assumed he wanted to leave. Makes sense in her mind, since that was the way she got out of boring situations at parties: Look at your watch, say you're tired, and then excuse yourself. It never occurred to her that just because this was the way she did things it didn't necessarily mean that it was the way that her date did them. We're all guilty of this bias because making sense of the world means learning how to categorize like things. As babies we figure out that four-legged animals that go woof are all dogs. As women we figure out that two-legged mammals that wolf whistle as you walk by are all...you get the picture. We group things because it allows us to understand them more easily.

This strategy of remembering the past to help make decisions about the future does make sense in a lot of ways. Imagine eating a pretty red berry from the forest that promptly made you sick. It's important that you remember this in order to avoid being sick from red berries in the future. Now imagine a young, blond corporate lawyer with a southern drawl who broke your heart. Consciously or not you will begin to categorize features like "lawyer," "blond," and "southern drawl" to potentially mean things about other people and the way they will treat you. This type of irrational thinking extends not only to features of previous boyfriends but to messages that we received from others growing up. From your mom to the class bully, each and every one of your interactions will have to a lesser or greater degree affected the way you react toward the world around you. They're the origins and unwitting triggers of divisive Common Thinking Errors. Understanding and being able to contend with these CTEs is vital if you are going to be able to really hear and accurately interpret the words of others.

The first step in being able to tackle CTEs is being able to recognize them. Let's examine the six most common mistakes and remember that these errors are at the core of everything we discuss in the upcoming chapters:

1. All-or-nothing thinking. You think in complete extremes. Either he tells me he loves me or our relationship is doomed or If he hasn't asked me on a second date by Tuesday, I'm never answering his calls again. Now this is all very well and good, but the man in question doesn't have a copy of your rule book, so he has no idea that this is what you want. Who decided that this was the best criterion by which to judge a relationship? Where did your "rules" come from? He can't mind-read any more than you can, and thinking in extremes just creates ridiculously high expectations that no one can match. And usually only one person gets hurt by the outcome: you.

2. Maximizing the negatives. You only take notice of the downside of the situation. So what if he's the love of your life and he's reliable, handsome, and kind? He was standoffish with your mother last week and didn't want to go to your great-aunt's birthday party, so he must hate everyone in your life, and eventually he'll start to hate you too. The point is, if you are biased to see things in a negative way then you are much more likely to focus on the one negative point while ignoring everything else that would give you a more balanced view of the situation.

3. Making everything about you. You feel responsible for things that have nothing to do with you. He's in a foul mood, it must be my fault. Clearly he's lost interest, and he's trying to push me away so that I'll back off and eventually finish it. Maybe he's in a foul mood because a coworker has messed up and now he'll have to spend the entire weekend sorting it out, when he'd rather be with you. Or perhaps he's tired and just feeling a bit under the weather. Whatever it is, it's important that you recognize that his world, his thoughts, and even his feelings may not always revolve around you. And even though it may upset you to see him down, many times the best thing that you can do is just give him the space to speak to you when he is ready and manage your own anxiety by remembering that his life is filled with a million and one things that have the potential to make him happy or sad. You are one of those things but by no means the only one.

4. Jumping to conclusions. You reach inaccurate conclusions based on insufficient or inadequate evidence. He wants us to join a gym, which means he isn't attracted to me anymore. He thinks I've put on weight and let myself go. It's only a matter of time before he leaves. Men tend to be much more straightforward than women. If he thought that, he would probably tell you. He wants to join a gym because, well, he does. He probably thinks it would be a good, fun way of keeping fit and a way for the two of you to spend more time together. If you immediately jump to conclusions, you never give yourself the chance to make sense of what is really going on. Also if you are going to sit around playing detective, it will eventually get tiresome for your mate. No one wants to be with someone who is constantly trying to unearth his hidden motives.

5. Seeing everything as a catastrophe. You focus on the worst-case scenario and exaggerate the likely consequences. I've burned the romantic meal I planned for tonight. Everything's ruined and the evening will be a disaster. I don't like the dress I've bought either and he probably doesn't want to come here anyway. Slow down! Stop the spiral of doom in its tracks. Look at the facts. All that's happened is the chicken might be extra crispy. But the dessert looks fabulous, your hair is just the way you like it, and he is coming to see you, not the food. It all boils down to perspective. The more anxious you feel, the less perspective you are able to get on a situation. Take a minute to step back and really challenge those negative thoughts.

6. Generalizing the negatives. You exaggerate the memory of an unpleasant experience, which then affects other parts of your present life, even if they are entirely unrelated. A throwaway comment from your ex-boyfriend about how he's not really into blondes turns into My hair looks bad, and if he thinks so, so will every other guy, and I'll end up dying a lonely old woman who never finds love! Now, you know this isn't logical or reasonable thinking. Apart from anything else, "not being into blondes" is shallow, which is your ex's loss. There are millions of men out there with incredibly diverse tastes in women. Stop making huge generalizations about small, meaningless comments. He probably can't even remember saying it!

Can you see how these thinking errors start to affect your behavior and, in turn, the way you live your life? One woman might sleep with every guy who takes her out for a drink because she's established a false belief that sex is the only way to make a guy fall in love with her. Another woman might starve herself for a week before every date, because one guy told her she had "womanly curves." And, in an extreme example, someone may completely avoid dating altogether and close off the option of meeting anyone because she doesn't believe she deserves to find love. Each sounds ridiculous written down, but we're all guilty of this behavior in one form or another. With a few tweaks in the way we listen and interpret what we hear, we can radically change our lives for the better.

Common Thinking Errors don't appear overnight. They develop over years and stay with us, often unchallenged. And once ingrained, they become automatic. You don't even realize the havoc you are causing to your happiness. If you are going to have any chance of dissolving self-defeating CTEs, you must learn to reprogram those automatic negative thoughts with a more constructive strategy:

• Identify it. Thoughts give rise to emotions. What am I feeling? Why am I feeling this way? What am I thinking about that is making me feel this way? What am I saying to myself?

• Dispute it.

Bridging the he-says/she-hears gap
By Deb
It turns out that more often than not, couples are on the same page, but the real issue is that these pages are written in different languages! This book serves as a simple guide for translating these often disparate languages of male and female-ese.

Based on the principles of cognitive behavioral psychology, _What Men Say, What Women Hear_ shows how *mis*interpretations of others' comments often results in unnecessary relationship drama and devastation. Helping to bridge the he-says/she-hears gap, this book offers clear explanations (with relevant and entertaining examples) and easy-to-hear advice for communicating in a more gender-neutral language of love.

From the first date to the first fight to the first (and hopefully only) walk down the aisle, this book brings couples closer to really hearing what the other is intending to say. Hear, hear!

The Purpose of Christmas, by Rick Warren

Hailed by The Economist as the “the most influential pastor in America,” and by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, the bestselling author of The Purpose Driven Life expounds on the profound origins of Christmas, describing it as an opportune time to welcome peace into our lives.

In his powerful yet compassionate voice, Pastor Rick Warren sounds the clarion call to “remember the reason for the season,” taking readers back in time to the most wonderful story of all—the birth of the baby Jesus. When he was just a small boy, young Rick asked his parents if they could celebrate Christmas with a birthday party for Jesus—and the tradition began that the Warrens have upheld for over fifty years. Now through stirring imagery and compelling personal insights, The Purpose of Christmas honors the significance and promise of this cherished holiday. Pastor Warren encourages readers to identify and confront what drains peace from their lives. Warren explains that the way to respond to these peace robbers is to learn how to surrender to God’s will and not feel defeated or discouraged when life does not go as planned. True peace of mind is found by having an unshakeable faith in God—knowing that His empowering Spirit will guide His children through life’s challenges.

Beautifully written, The Purpose of Christmas will stir readers to honor the true significance of Christmas and to nurture God’s gifts of love and peace in this world.

What a blessing and encouragement at a much needed time
By systems therapist
Christian's firmly believe that they KNOW the purpose of Christmas, that they believe they celebrate the birth of Jesus and that they are just "fine". In this personal letter to all readers, Pastor Rick Warren reminded me that although I know the purpose of Christmas and I believe that I celebrate it, I have/had truly forgotten the childlike wonder and was not rejoicing in the celebration of the greatest mircle of all. My heart has been blessed by the message that this book carries. I hope to celebrate Christmas differently this year with a better attitude and an improved outlook, despite the impending gloom of our economy and position as a country.

Thank you Pastor Rick for the opportunity to share this message with my children. We will be reading this book at bedtime together and each night celebrating The Purpose of Christmas.

A Change-Your-Life, 12-months-of-the-year, Christmas book.
By Harold Wolf
My purchase of this book was intended for my wife, but thankfully I read it prior to gifting it. We'll reread it, together. It's a perfect Christmas book. It is, by title, a Christmas book, but it offers so much more. It's more about finding the Gift that Christmas is and living it year-round.

From the author, Rick Warren, of "The Purpose Driven Life", this book is something of a "Reader's Digest" version of that book. It is a doable, one to two hour read that touches faith, grace, and life.

This Christmas, my wife faces losing her mother very soon. My own mother died one week prior to Christmas just 3 years ago. If it isn't death that is this moment's issue in your life; if it's a lost relationship, if it is hardship, or maybe illness--this book will help put it all in focus. This book can give you the true Christmas meaning, and it doesn't even have to be December.

Rick Warren gifts readers another fine book of hope by presenting God's hope and love. Gift idea: If you missed Christmas, give it for Valentine's, or St. Patrick's, Flag Day, or just someone's BIRTHDAY. After all, the book explains, Christmas is all about His BIRTHDAY.

A Friend changed my life when he gave me this book
By Ddrgtrf
Like most people, I've "done" Christmas every year since I was a baby, but honestly, I had never really thought about it much personally. Of course I knew it was the birth of Jesus, but didn't figure that had any relevance to me. It was just an historical event. Then, a week ago, a good friend of mine gave me a copy of this book. It was short, so I thought I'd read it. WOW.... I mean seriously... I had no idea! How did I miss this all these years? Warren explains why Christmas is such a "big deal" around the world, but more important is how he clearly lays out the implications and benefits to your personal life. I did what he said and I will never be the same person anymore. I'm free! I still don't know enough to explain it so I just ordered 9 copies to give to my friends.
This will be the best Christmas because now I get it. JONATHAN FARADAY (Robert is my brother)

Empire Statesman: The Rise and Redemption of Al Smith, by Robert A. Slayton

Franklin Roosevelt is said to have explained Al Smith, and his own New Deal, with these words: "Practically all the things we've done in the federal government are the things Al Smith did as governor of New York." Smith, who ran for president in 1928, not only set the model for FDR, he also taught America that the promise of the country extends to everyone and no one should be left behind.

The story of this trailblazer is the story of America in the twentieth century. A child of second-generation immigrants, a boy self-educated on the streets of the nation's largest city, he went on to become the greatest governor in the history of New York; a national leader and symbol to immigrants, Catholics, and the Irish; and in 1928 the first Catholic major-party candidate for president. He was the man who championed safe working conditions in the wake of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. He helped build the Empire State Building. Above all, he was a national model, both for his time and for ours.

Yet, as Robert Slayton demonstrates in this rich story of an extraordinary man and his times, Al Smith's life etched a conflict still unresolved today. Who is a legitimate American? The question should never be asked, yet we can never seem to put it behind us. In the early years of the twentieth century, the Ku Klux Klan reorganized, not to oppose blacks, but rather against the flood of new immigrants arriving from southern Europe and other less familiar sources. Anti-Catholic hatred was on the rise, mixed up with strong feelings about prohibition and tensions between towns and cities. The conflict reached its apogee when Smith ran for president. Slayton's story of the famous election of 1928, in which Smith lost amid a blizzard of blind bigotry, is chilling reading for Americans of all faiths. Yet Smith's eventual redemption, and the recovery of his deepest values, shines as a triumph of spirit over the greatest of adversity.

Even in our corrosively cynical times, the greater vision of Al Smith's life inspires and uplifts us.

Review
Harold Evans author of "The American Century" Rich and relevant: Robert Slayton's portrait of the colorful and appealing Al Smith is rich in new detail -- and very relevant to the political controversies of today. The 'Happy Warrior' nominated by FDR for the Democratic ticket in 1924 (and again in 1928), New York Governor Smith was a populist Catholic who confronted the KKK bigots with tolerance, integrity, and humor, long before John F. Kennedy finally exorcised the anti-Catholic demons from American politics...or did he? An America in search of heroes will find sustenance in this honorable man of the city. Al Smith was one of those people who make a reality of American ideals.

Robert A. Caro

author of "The Power Broker: Robert Moses" and "the Fall of New York"

At last! Here is a book, vivid and insightful, that finally rescues from obscurity a man who deserves a major place in American political history. From the glory of his governorship to the tragedy of his final years, here he is -- the Happy Warrior.

Hasia Diner

author of "Erin's Daughters in America"

Robert Slayton has presented readers with a 'real American hero' and with an exemplary biographical narrative. The Al Smith who jumps out of these pages is a paradigm of urban America, someone who had been shaped by its streets, and who dedicated his public life to making them livable for all.

Jack Beatty

author of "The Rascal King: The Life and Times of James Michael Curley, 1874-1958"

Alfred Emanuel Smith: the name once had a resonance. It stood for inclusion, for immigrant hope of assimilation, for the fulfillment of the dream vision of America -- a country without bigotry, your land and mine. In defeat Al Smith meant more to Americans than all but the great presidents have meant in victory, and in this needed reinterpretation of Smith, Robert Slayton shows us why.

Terry Golway

author of "The Irish in America"

Robert Slayton reminds us why Al Smith is one of America's great political heroes. With great affection, Slayton tells the story of a man who worked his way up from poverty, but who never forgot the immigrants and their children in the old neighborhood. Robert Slayton has given us a touching portrait of an honorable man who showed that government could make a difference in the lives of the poor, the powerless, and the disenfranchised. What an antidote for today's corrosive cynicism about politics and politicians!

A compelling and moving biography of a great American
By Rocco Dormarunno
Growing up in New York, it was hard to avoid the name Alfred E. Smith. The huge housing development on the Lower East Side is just one structure that bears his name. But it wasn't until I had read Leon Stein's "Traingle Fire" (for a college paper), when I learned something about the man himself. Later, as another reviewer mentioned, Al Smith was highlighted in the Ric Burns "New York" documentary. Intrigued, I picked up Christopher Finan's "Happy Warrior", which was a very good introduction. However, Professor Robert Slayton's "Empire Statesman: The Rise and Redemption of Al Smith" has completed the picture for me.

Slayton painstakingly examines the complex relationships between Smith and many of the players in his political spectrum, especially FDR. How this contrasts with the simple but deep relationships he had with friends and family is astounding. One of Professor Slayton's main theses--that Smith embodied the best qualities of turn-of-the century immigrant New York--is smoothly argued. For New York, Smith was the right man at the right time. But then Slayton switches gears, with convincing authority, that Smith was the wrong man at wrong time for 1928 America. It is a devestating irony, and grippingly described.

I found the final sections about Smith's reconciliation with FDR and America extremely moving. The entire "Finale" section, including the deaths and funerals of Smith's wife, Katie, and then Smith himself, had me choking back the tears. Finally, there is Professor Slayton's reminder of the legacy that Al Smith left behind, both for New York City and the nation. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Mr. Smith Goes to.........Albany
By Thomas J. Burns
The election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency occurred when I was in the seventh grade of my local parochial school. In the Catholic/Democratic atmosphere of East Buffalo, and probably in Tim Russert's South Buffalo as well, the resulting ascendancy of a Catholic to the White House was a vindication. We knew that a Catholic had run once before; in fact, he had been governor of our own state. The popular wisdom of the Catholic grass roots held that the first intrepid candidate had lost because he was a Catholic, and a lot of America did not like Catholics. It did not occur to a seventh grader that people vote for lots of reasons, and that this was true in 1928 as in 1960.

Alfred E. Smith, a man of no small accomplishment, lost miserably to Herbert Hoover in a 1928 presidential election that added little to the American character. It may be true that his Catholicism was a major factor in his defeat, but biographer Robert A. Slayton provides a balanced study of Smith that gives reason to pause. We see early in this work that Smith [particularly when compared to Hoover] suffered from major deficiencies in his political upbringing that affected his judgment and contributed to a naiveté about the nature of the American electorate.

Born in 1873 in New York's infamous Fourth Ward, there was no way that young Smith would not be baptized into the two religions of his neighborhood: the Roman Catholic Church and Tammany Hall. At his local St. James Parish he received his elementary school education from the Christian Brothers. It is doubtful that he absorbed any particularly subversive tendencies of church and state at St. James. Catholic schools of the time were a laborious financial undertaking for Catholic bishops of the day, who considered them a necessary refuge against the virulent anti-Catholic attitudes of many public school curriculums. What Smith certainly absorbed from his Catholic upbringing was New York's multiculturalism, a phenomenon not understood and generally feared in the predominantly agricultural and Protestant Middle America.

Tammany Hall, one of America's most notorious yet beneficent Democratic political machines, would also demonstrate in Smith's day that same ability to adapt to cultural diversity despite its Irish heritage. Tammany was the incarnation of Tip O'Neill's dictum that "all politics is local." Slayton has no argument with this philosophy except to note that it is notorious bad presidential politics. Thus from the formative years Smith emerges as the Catholic/Tammany wounded duck.

But Smith postponed his inevitable denouement for a long time. For much of his life his personality, loyalty, affability and attention to detail, not to mention his "made man" status with the Tammany war horses, were enough to see him through his political climb. Despite its size and stature, New York State government was Byzantine and unwieldy. The legislature itself was a purgatory for a man without some kind of particular agenda, and Smith found his in the very organization of state government. With little to do, he became that body's best studied member and probably the best informed of the lot; he had something of Bob Taft's feel for the paper of legislation but with a much more extroverted personality. His counsel became cherished and his respect among his peers flourished.

And, he was lucky, though it is also true that men can make their own luck through hard work. On March 25, 1911 a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire in New York killed 146 workers. The dimensions of this tragedy and the accompanying neglect of worker safety made labor reform a statewide issue, allowing Smith to conduct emotional public hearings throughout the state. This exposure, and his public advocacy for a popular issue, put him into the New York State governor's mansion in 1919. With the invaluable help of Belle Moskowitz, Frances Perkins, and Robert Moses, among others, Smith continued his program of reform of the state constitution and generally pleased voters enough to maintain office more often than not in the dreadful decade of 1920's national Democratic defeats.

When William McAdoo declined to seek the presidential nomination in 1928, Governor Smith was virtually unopposed within his party. Suffice to say that once he stepped onto the national stage, however, all of his assets of many years became liabilities. His New York bonhomie, his Catholicism, his parochial accent, and his enjoyment of spirits in the age of the Volstead Act doomed his campaign from the start. He was running against the extremely popular Coolidge legacy, against a candidate who knew how to avoid mistakes. To borrow a metaphor from this century, the "red states" were really red, and there were many more of them in 1928.

Having said that, there is no denying that the 1928 campaign set the twentieth century low water mark for bigotry and ugliness. Slayton points out that the KKK of the 1920's was primarily an anti-Catholic movement; Jim Crow laws made Negro intimidation relatively unnecessary at the time. Catholicism was understood as a foreign invasion of lower class degenerates who drank excessively and usurped the jobs of present American citizens. The Democratic ticket was seen as an endorsement of this demographic shift, and voters turned upon the top of the ticket with a particular vehemence. Smith's parochialism had not prepared him for this, and the intensity of feeling against him, along with the size of the defeat, seems to have left psychological scars that remained with Smith for the rest of his life.

After this grueling ordeal, it galled Smith all the more that the perceived savior of his party was a man he considered a political lightweight, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. As long as FDR lived, Smith would never get his electoral revenge. Coupled with the debacle of managing the day's tallest white elephant, the new Empire State Building, Smith's "redemption" makes only a cameo appearance in this work.

The FFM Man
By Steve Iaco
In the midst of a heated debate on the floor of the New York State Legislature, it's suddenly announced that Cornell has won a major boating race. "It means nothing to me, I'm a Yale man," one legislator intones. Bellows another: "means nothing to me either, I'm a Harvard man." "It doesn't mean anything to me," responds Al Smith, "I'm an FFM." What's FFM? "Fulton Fish Market," Smith says. "Now can we return to the debate?"
This is just one of the colorful anecdotes that lace Robert Slayton's excellent chronicle of Al Smith's rise from "The Sidewalks of New York" (his adoptive campaign theme song) to the New York Statehouse and beyond. Here's another story that caught my fancy. As Governor, Al visits a local elitist who's opposed to the expansion of public parklands on Long Island. "It will just bring more rabble from the City," the elitist protests. "Rabble? I'm the rabble," Smith rejoins.
My interest in Al Smith was recently piqued by the PBS "History of New York" documentary (episodes #4 and #5), and I picked up Mr. Slayton's new biography looking to learn more about this seminal public figure. Mr. Slayton delivered everything I expected and more: Smith, the street-wise Lower Eastsider who rises to Tammany leadership; the reformer who crusades for life-safety codes and work rules revisions in the wake of the deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Factory inferno; the four-term Governor who achieves landmark administrative reforms and inveighs against Prohibition; his pathbreaking, but deeply disappointing 1928 Presidential campaign; his foray into the private sector and the construction of the Empire State Building -- just in time for the Great Depression; and Smith's bitter falling out, and eventual rapprochement with FDR.
All in all, it's quite a fascinating life.

Motherhood, Rescheduled: The New Frontier of Egg Freezing and the Women Who Tried It, by Sarah Elizabeth Richards

What would happen if we could stop time? A fascinating, inside look at five women who had their eggs frozen reveals what it’s like for them to be free of the constant ticking of their biological clocks.

How would you live your life if you could stop your biological clock? If you could be free of the "baby panic" that has tormented an entire generation of women who postponed motherhood to pursue careers or find the right mate? Would you date better? Marry later? Relax more? In Motherhood, Rescheduled, journalist Sarah Elizabeth Richards tells the stories of four women—including herself—who attempt to turn back time by freezing their eggs and chart a new course through their thirties and forties. Their journeys are bumpy, hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, but always rewarding.

Just a decade ago, the idea of women freezing their eggs seemed futile or dangerous. But with new advances in medicine, women who choose this route face no higher risk of birth defects in their babies than other women, and pregnancy rates using frozen eggs are approaching those using fresh eggs. At a time when one in five American women between the ages of forty and forty-four is childless and half of those women say they wish they could have children, Richards offers a hopeful message: women approaching the end of their babymaking days do not need to settle, and even twentysomethings who want to prolong their dating years do not need to fret.

Richards tells the history of this controversial science, from its moments of premature enthusiasm to the exciting race that led to the big breakthroughs. She also explores the hard facts of egg freezing—from the cost and practical obstacles to the probabilities of success. Above all, she shares the stories of these women, and especially her own, with emotional honesty and compassion, and makes the journey for all ultimately redeeming.

From Booklist
This intriguing (and often funny) book about women, including the author, who choose to freeze their eggs is hard to put down. As Richards notes, society sees “Clock Tickers” who take charge this way as being desperate or self-indulgent. Au contraire, she argues, citing all the reasons such a woman should be appreciated for making enormous efforts to ensure that she has “a better chance of finding a partner and father for her children, avoiding birth defects, and becoming financially secure so she can hold up her end of a marriage or support a family.” A meta-analysis of a dozen studies turned up the following reasons women freeze their eggs: “divorce, a family history of premature menopause, career or educational opportunity, lack of a supportive partner,” or “just not feeling financially secure or emotionally stable enough to bring children into their lives.” The author expertly weaves facts about freezing with the stories of real women, including herself. For Richards, “Egg freezing allowed me to change the narrative of my life from mourning and desperation to hope and potential.” A thought-provoking, well-written story for women who worry about their declining fertility. --Karen Springen

Review
"A fascinating, well-researched account of uncharted medical advances poised to turn the dating landscape upside down, Motherhood, Rescheduled reads like a page-turner novel full of suspense, plot twists, humor, and heartbreak. What’s amazing is that it’s real. I cheered, I cried, and stayed up way too late wondering what would become of these women, then stayed up even later pondering the provocative questions their stories raise." (Lori Gottlieb, author of The New York Times bestseller Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough)

"Motherhood, Rescheduled is exactly the book my generation of women has needed. The option to delay parenthood is fantastically liberating, but with freedom comes the paradox of choice. With refreshing clarity and grace, Sarah Elizabeth Richards completely demystifies the social, emotional, and scientific complexities of egg freezing, arming the rest of us with the information we need to better plot our own lives. I only wish it had come along sooner." (Kate Bolick, contributing editor for The Atlantic)

"Sarah captures the anxiety of a generation of women caught between unparalleled opportunity and the limits of their own biology. Pausing the biological clock with egg freezing could be as important to this generation as the birth control pill was to the last. She makes a compelling case for using the technology as an acceptable and affirming family planning choice." (Rachel Lehmann-Haupt, author of In Her Own Sweet Time: Unexpected Adventures in Finding Love, Commitment, and Motherhood)

“Intriguing (and often funny)…. A thought-provoking, well-written story for women who worry about their declining fertility.” (Booklist)

“[Richards] writes movingly about the vicissitudes of online dating and the pain of the breakup of a loving relationship with an ambivalent partner, as well as the anguish many women feel when contemplating a childless future….A page-turner in which each of the stories is different but compelling.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Those who haven't gone through the process or aren't struggling with modern day dating woes won't be able to support you by offering sound advice and clear options. Essential reading for ALL women college age
By Jennifer Cecelia
This book is exciting and profound. This book will change the entire way women view their fertility and planning their family.I had no idea women could freeze their own eggs for later use. I couldn't put it down wanting to see what happens next to these 5 amazing women who froze their own eggs. But the message here is so much bigger than that. By freezing their own eggs while young women are no longer tied to a biological ticking clock. Women can now control when they want to have babies. I kept thinking about the birth defects from older eggs when women marry later in life. This is ground breaking science that all young women must know about. Kudos to the author for weaving this new science into the heartfelt stories of everyday women.

A must read for late 20s/early 30s women considering motherhood, just not "right now"...
By Stewart
Motherhood Rescheduled gives a very personal glimpse into the lives of four women on the journey to freeze their eggs and prolong their fertility. As a women just shy of 30 who definitely wants children, just not "right now", this book was an wonderfully insightful read. Over the past couple of years, I have watched my friends start families and felt the pressure that the sand in the hour glass of my fertility is slowly but surely running out. Now I know there are other options, such as egg freezing, available. The author weaves the narratives of each woman together with the scientific facts such that the book reads like fiction, yet you come away feeling empowered with a plethora of information about egg freezing. A must read for all women, especially those of us in our reproductive prime. Motherhood Rescheduled shows us that women have the power to throw that fertility clock out the window and start families when we're truly ready, not when Mother Nature tells us to.

Life's Healing Choices

While this book seems to follow the path of 123 step programs I have found both the book and the journal a great resource in helping to focus on the letting go and letting God as well as discussion items for helping to heal relationships.

Goat Song: A Seasonal Life, A Short History of Herding, and the Art of Making Cheese, by Brad Kessler

Goat Song is the story of a year in the life of a couple who abandoned their one-bedroom apartment in New York City to live on seventy-five acres in Vermont and raise Nubian goats. In poetic, reverent detail, Brad Kessler explores our ancient relationship to the land and our gradual alienation from the animals that feed us. His fascinating account traces his journey of choosing the goats and learning how to breed, milk, and care for them. As Kessler begins to live the life of a herder, he encounters the pastoral roots of so many aspects of Western culture—how our diet, our alphabet, our religions, poetry, and economy all grew out of a pastoralist setting, a life lived among hoofed animals.

From Publishers Weekly
Novelist (Birds in Fall; Lick Creek) Kessler's account of tending a small herd of milking goats in Vermont captures both the lush, poetic paradise of rural life and the raw, unrelenting drama of dairying. Kessler, a Saab-driving ex-Manhattanite, purchases two Nubian goats, breeds them and helps his wife, Dona, a trained doula, attend to the birth of four goat kids the following spring. The amusing zoomorphic and anthropomorphic descriptions, where goats forage as if they were at a sample sale and milk-fed kids stagger œlike street junkies, dissipate as Kessler endures a season of goat wrangling, haying and hunting coyotes. Kessler gives the legal aspects of unpasteurized cheese a cursory inspection; his devotion centers on a budding relationship with animals, the earth and goat cheese. He's a back-to-the-land naturalist, who supports his detailed personal observations with extensive research as he explores the cultural, historical and biological aspects of pastoralism. While the tome's lengthy poetic journal entries on animal husbandry and cheese making hardly qualify as a comprehensive manual, the observant, unsanctimonious read is bound to inspire hobby farmers and consummate cheese lovers. You'll want your own Vermont Pond...
By Deborah V
I picked this book up at a local bookstore because of the title. Novelist Brad Kessler lives in Manhattan, but has never felt really big city and longs for a Walden Pond of his own--fewer people and more of nature's abundance. He and his wife Dona have a weekend retreat in West Virginia, but as they are in the process of buying it burns down.

After years of searching they find their own Walden Pond in Vermont. A dilapidated old farm house with beautiful views, 75 acres of land, an orchard, a pond and and a brook!

Although neither Brad nor Dona know much about farming, they learn by helping neighbors and photographing farms. This book chronicles their first years there with the dairy goats they fall in love with. Mr. Kessler writes about the goats and their quirks, but also the return to nature and getting your food from the animals. The freshness of milk, the almost mystical qualities of your own home made cheese.

You'll find journal entries about the goats routine (Hannah, Nisa, Pie and Lizzie). Information on the intertwining of goats and human history. Lyrical writing on pastoral living. Kessler writes of the poetry of making cheese. And in a chapter entitled "Service" you may learn far more than you ever wanted to about goat sex. There are also some great scenes of trying to figure out whether or not a goat is in heat and of course the memorable birthing scenes!

The story does indeed provide a lyrical poetic mixture of science, history, and goat care through birthing, living, and death as the Kesslers nourish and protect their goats from predators (coyotes, meningeal worms), nourish them with both love and care, and of course the Kesslers love affair with cheese!

A great read about the simple life which turns out to not be so simple after all, but regardless, turns out to be incredibly rewarding.

Heart Song
By D.A.M.
I came upon this book via NPR; a few minutes in a traffic jam, listening to Brad Kessler (whose other work I sadly don't know - yet) doing the requisite promo interview, and I knew that I had to read it. The interviewer seemed to find the idea of a former New York resident, a successful man, giving "all that" up to embrace a pastoral life in Vermont - well, let's just say that the interviewer's voice betrayed his possibly amused disbelief, even if his careful words didn't. They talked about keeping goats, and about cheese making, about how the author's wife felt about all that. Kessler was polite and articulate, but even in those few minutes of conversation, I got the impression that the questions being asked were about all the wrong things. Turns out, I was right.

On the surface, "Goat Song" is a book about learning a new way of life and some new skills. A writer and his artist wife move to Vermont, decide to keep goats, and learn how to make cheese. It isn't an uncommon story. A great many similar stories have been written up in one form or another. But Kessler is not a common writer or thinker, and his story is ultimately not only a story but a meditation - a readable, fascinating, honest, often lyrically written (no, let me take that back - "lyrical" makes it sound self-conscious and precious. Kessler's prose is anything but!), often moving, and always deeply mature meditation about, you know --- meaning. About not only things-as-they-are, but also about context. About the value of work and the joy of just being...

OK, OK, I'm not helping. I see that. There's a lot of fascinating information about goats and and about cheese making and about the history of the pastoral tradition, too. Let's just say I couldn't put the book down, and when I passed it along to friends, they couldn't put it down either, and then they started buying copies for their friends....

In short, I loved "Goat Song." I still have to pass on a few more copies.

How Is a Soul Like a Cheese?
By Andrew Schonbek
This is one of the many questions asked by Brad Kessler in this surprisingly poetic book.

He provides the answer: "It starts out raw and unformed and tries to reform itself over time. It is constantly corrected and rebuffed, purged of blemishes and taints and sins".

If you think Goat Song is just about goats, think again. Yes the goats are present and yes we learn much about them, but they are but a path, one that leads to a deep and romantic contemplation of life itself.

The book is dedicated to Annie Dillard and something of her spirit seems to hover in its pages. Kessler revels in the use of esoteric vocabulary, as does Dillard, though not to the degree that he would invoke the word "thigmotropic" as she unfortunately has.

Here are some examples of his wordsmith's art...

"Thunder growled outside, the sky turned suddenly tenebrous".

"The days were lovely then, cool and sere".

"The rocks are green schist and round, both about ten pounds".

"They gazed Talmudically across the mountains while they chewed their cud".

"Our milk is local and autochthonous".

"I didn't recognize the dip or swale or glade mantled in its mattress of snow".

The first two are beautiful; the third appropriately scientific; the fourth sketchy (how does a goat gaze "Talmudically" and what does this look like?); the fifth and sixth perhaps tautologies (local, autochthonous, dip, swale).

But it doesn't really matter. As with Dillard (who also likes the word "swale" - "The swale drained the dunes like a vein" - The Maytrees) it all flows together in a poetic prose that engages even as it challenges.

And so we live the rhythms of the land, the pastoral life, the seasons, times of day, scents, and tastes, and sounds.

Somehow it's not surprising that it all seems to lead to matters of the spirit and soul. The following quotation is taken from near the end of the book:

"Down here in the valley I think often of the Carthusian brothers up on our mountain - especially when I make cheese. We live so close to each other, only altitude separates us, but their lives remain a mystery, a rumor, the sound of bells in the late afternoon. Still, I wonder what a day is like up there versus down here. The raven who's been rowing between our houses for weeks - a thin black line - do they see him too? The owl hooting at night - do they hear his inflection? Do we share the same faith if not belief - the same lasting silence?"

Highly recommended.

Vickie Stringer catapulted into literary success when she sold thousands of copies of her first novel from the trunk of her car. That debut title, Let That Be the Reason, won praise from The Washington Post, who called it “a street lit insta-classic,” and gave birth to one of the wildest and most outrageous heroines in urban fiction history: Dirty Red.

In Still Dirty, good old Red, that infamous expert of deception, is still up to making trouble. Though she faces challenges that would baffle even the shrewdest hustler, Red stops at nothing to outwit her adversaries and avoid being caught by either the law or the outlaws. Trapped once again in a web of murder, theft, and deceit, Red escapes with her boyfriend Q, running for a plane to Mexico after a violent fight with her ex-boyfriend Bacon, a released convict. Hot on their heels and fueled by jealous rage, Bacon is determined not to let Red get away alive. Will Q come to her rescue once again? Or will he tire of cleaning up after Red’s dirty deeds?

Still Dirty CHAPTER 1
Bacon arrived at the boarding gate just in time to see Q and Red’s jet preparing for takeoff. Bacon’s glaring eyes were transfixed on the walkway where his girlfriend and her latest lover had disappeared. Sweat droplets sprayed from his twisted face. He was furious that he’d missed his chance for revenge.

In a blur of motion, he spun around and dashed back to the counter, now focusing his deranged stare on the ticket agent. Speechless with rage, his wide nostrils flared and his breathing blasted out in ragged spurts.

For a moment, the woman was frozen in fright; her eyes gawked at the involuntary contraction of Bacon’s jaw muscles. She gasped, hand clutched over her heart. She certainly didn’t want her face to compare to the young lady’s who just boarded the jet.

She looked as if she might break and run away, so he grabbed her by the neck and put his Glock to her dome. He held her face so close, her freckles almost jumped off her skin and onto his.

While he held the woman in his vise-like grip, thinking of Red’s betrayal, Bacon’s eyes glazed over with fury. It wasn’t over. Red and her nigga could run, but they couldn’t hide. Not from him. Bacon was gon’ get his revenge—come hell or high water. He immediately flashed back to the letter that Red had written to him out of anger while he was in prison.

It would be virtually impossible for you to kick my ass, seeing as how you will be an old and gray bastard when you come home . . . I never loved you . . . I didn’t even like you . . . I couldn’t even stand the sight of your face . . . the sound of your voice. The words echoed repeatedly in Bacon’s head. Although Red claimed she penned it out of anger, he knew she meant every single word. You did all the work, but now my new man and I reap all the benefits. Wake up! You played yourself. Charge it to da game.

Bacon’s grip on the ticket agent tightened as a vein began to protrude and pulsate from his right temple to the center of his forehead. Charge it to da game, huh? he thought. You’ll see me again . . . face-to-face or six feet under.

Bacon’s thoughts returned to the present and he glared at the girl. “Bitch, where that plane going?”

“M-M-Mexico . . . Cozumel, Mexico.”

•   •   •

Silence filled the air as the private charter jet finally leveled off in the clear skies. Out the plane window Red could see the blue horizon on one side of the plane and white clouds on the other.

Suddenly a claustrophobic wave overcame Red, causing her to heave deep breaths. She tried to calm her racing heart, which seemed to match the roar of the plane’s engine. After observing her surroundings, she remembered that she and Q were the only passengers on the small plane. He must have rented this plane, she thought. Damn, Q is living large.

She held out her right hand, noticed its trembling, then hid it in her lap. She didn’t want Q to see how frightened she was; after almost getting murdered twice in one day, Red was spooked.

What the fuck just happened? she thought. None of this was supposed to happen. When did Bacon get out? Why in the hell am I the one runnin’? I control shit, not him.

Absently, she cut her eyes at Q. He sat on the other side of the plane, two rows ahead of her. He continuously shook his head in disbelief. “I can’t believe this shit!” he yelled out loud, clenching his fists on both sides of his forehead. He then took a deep breath and buried his head in his hands.

Look at him. I really fucked up now. I finally got a nigga that says he loves me and means it, but what about now? He could have gotten killed tonight because of me. Shit!

She turned her head to the right to look out of the window and felt a harsh pain radiate across the bridge of her nose. She began to raise her left arm to touch her nose, but a sharp pain stopped her. Bacon had damn near ripped her arm off when he grabbed her back at her house. Instead, she used her right hand and touched her nose. It felt twice as large under her fingers as she felt the damage. My nose, my nose . . . she thought, gingerly dabbing at the bridge.

•   •   •

Bacon immediately pushed the ticket agent away from him with unbound masculine force and sprinted back to the viewing station, only to see the plane on its ascent into the sky. He was so focused on revenge that he forgot that he had his gun still in his hand, fully exposed. He was startled when he heard someone yell, “He got a gun!”

With that announcement, people began to scatter like mice and pandemonium reigned.

“Run!”

“Duck!”

“It’s a sniper!”

Bacon quickly tucked his Glock in the small of his back, and, trying not to draw any more attention to himself, beelined back toward the entrance. He didn’t run, however, just walked at a more pronounced pace.

Bacon blended in as well as he could with the throngs of people stampeding out of the airport.

“That’s him, that’s him!” a female voice yelled.

Almost immediately, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he instinctively put his hand on his piece. If I’m goin down, I’m takin’ one of these muthafuckas with me, he thought. But when he looked over his shoulder, he saw that it was only one of the panic-stricken people in the airport, bum-rushing the front door trying to get out of harm’s way. He let out a sigh of relief.

The next thing Bacon knew, two armed policemen bumped into him, but their eyes were looking straight ahead as they pushed him out of the way. He glanced back and saw that they were making their way inside, presumably to the ticket agent’s counter. Somehow, she must have alerted them.

Bacon continued his trek toward the exit. Once he got outside, the light breeze swept over the beads of nervous sweat along his forehead.

He looked to the left, toward the executive valet parking, and noticed the BMW. His hurry to track down and kill Red and Q had been so intense, he hadn’t cared that he’d parked the car illegally. Now there was a ticket on the windshield, an officer leaning against the car and a boot on the tire.

Fuck it, he said to himself. It ain’t my car. It was Red’s. Not wanting to stare too long, he stepped toward the curb, flagged down a cab and waited for it to pull up to him. Just as he reached for the door, he heard a voice cry out again, “That’s him. That’s him! I swear that’s him!”

Bacon climbed into the cab in one smooth move and slammed the door shut.

“Where to, buddy?” the cabbie asked Bacon, looking over his shoulder as he merged into the exiting traffic.

Just as he pulled off, Bacon stared out of the window and saw the freckle-faced girl, with two officers looking around for her assailant. He ducked down until they got out of the International section of the airport.

“Where to, buddy?” This time the cabdriver spoke a little louder.

“Thirty-one-twenty-four Colonnade Drive in West Bloomfield.” Bacon held his breath and prayed they didn’t get stopped in a traffic jam leaving the airport.

As the taxi finally merged onto the I-94 highway, Bacon reflected on what that had just taken place.

Thinking about everything he had done for Red made his temperature rise again instantly. I gave her everything. Bitch ain’t never had to want for nothin’, and now she wanna play a nigga . . . Have a nigga come to my crib looking for her?!

“You did all the work, but now my new man and I reap all the benefits.”

Those words were permanently etched in his psyche. Bacon looked out of the window and noticed the scenery on the outside was moving just as fast as the images in his mind. I’ma find that nigga and he’ll be dealt with, but first things first. Bacon grinned an evil grimace as he envisioned the perfect resting place for Red—floating under the Belle Isle Bridge.

Trying hard to be Still Dirty
By Glittergurl a bookworm
I enjoyed Dirty Red but Still Dirty left a lot to be desired. The book started off really slow then it somewhat picked up but never found a consistent pace to hold my interest. I forced myself to finish and by the time I got to the end I didn't care about Red, Bacon, Q or any of the supporting characters. The story wasn't well crafted and it didn't flow. I gave it 3 stars for Ms. Stringer's effort.

Was she serious!?
By Amazon Customer
I was so excited about this sequel. However it was a big let down. The beginning of the book was ok but the rest was garbage.I hardly ever give a book a one star rating but this one truly deserved it! Still Dirty was some straight up B.S.!!!! This book was pointless and the end was horrible!!! In Dirty Red, Red was an out cold chic and you had to respect her gangsta. In Still Dirty, Red was slow and lost, there was nothing gangsta about her. Most of her actions in part II didn't make any sense. It didn't make sense that she was oblivious to everything that was going on around her. I enjoyed reading more about her friend Terry then Red. I really wish I could go into more detail but I don't want to tell the story for those of you who haven't read it and still want to waste your time reading it!!!

Sheer disappointment
By Unique
I read Dirty Red many years ago and was very excited when I went on Amazon and seen that Still Dirty was coming out BUT to my disappointment the boolk truly wasnt as good as Dirty Red. Those street characteristics that Red had in the 1st book she lost it all by the 2nd book I was looking forward to seeing the things she would have gong down in part 2 NOT!!!!!!! Q was a suckah for love and got played in the end. It took me at least a week to read this book and I read Dirty red in a day. I felt like parts of Still Dirty could have been written in Dirty Red and left part 2 alone. Truly a disappointment
