Cursed: A Regan Reilly Mystery, by Carol Higgins Clark

PI Regan Reilly moved from Los Angeles to New York City when she married Jack “no relation” Reilly, head of the NYPD Major Case Squad. To help a friend, Regan takes on a case that takes her back to her old stomping grounds. . . .

On a snowy day in New York City, PI Regan Reilly gets an urgent call from her former neighbor, Abigail Feeney. A Hollywood hairdresser, Abigail believes her life has been cursed since the day she was born— Friday the 13th.

Always unlucky in love, Abigail now needs Regan’s help in tracking down an ex-boyfriend who was just spotted in downtown Los Angeles—a “nogood bum” who borrowed $100,000 from her three months ago, then promptly disappeared. Abigail desperately needs to get that money back, money given to her by her grandmother who is heading to L.A. Grandma Feeney, no shrinking violet, has plans to buy an old friend’s condo for Abigail and will need that hard-earned money to make the deal.

With hubby Jack away, the weather in New York miserable, and the guiltprovoking memory that Abigail had brought her chicken soup when she was sick, Regan agrees to hop a plane. Before long, the hunt for Abigail’s ex takes some dangerous turns. . . . But when Abigail becomes a suspect in a murder investigation, Regan begins to wonder if the curse is real—and possibly contagious!

From Publishers Weekly
In Clark's rambunctious 12th Regan Reilly mystery (after 2008's Zapped), the New York City PI heads for Los Angeles to help an old neighbor, film hairstylist Abigail Feeney, track down her ex-boyfriend, producer Cody Castle, who owes Abigail $100,000 she loaned him. Born on a Friday the 13th, Abigail has always felt cursed, and this is just the latest disaster in a run of bad luck. The missing Cody's filmmaking partner, Dean Puntler, is also worried, since Cody has squandered funding they needed for their production to boost hot young actress Stella Gardner. The murder of 85-year-old Nicky Tendril, one of Cody and Dean's prospective investors, adds extra stress. Might Abigail be the killer? Abigail had been cutting Nicky's hair for free until he began getting rude, but Regan is sure she's innocent. Clark's bubbly humor makes this a great vacation read for mystery-lite fans who love a Hollywood twist. (Apr.)

A quick, entertaining read
By Linda Holman
This is the 12th entry in the Regan Reilly series. As the title suggests, Abigail Feeney, a previous neighbor of Regan's in L.A., calls Regan for help. Abigail believes she is cursed, and that this is the reason bad things always happen to her.

Regan just happens to have the time to fly to Los Angeles, where she used to live before marrying Jack "no relation" Reilly! Jack is off in Miami for a law enforcement conference, and Nora and Luke, her parents, are in Palm Beach.

The action takes place in all the hot spots in and around L.A., including The Beverly Hills Hotel, Malibu and the re-gentrified area of Downtown L.A. The weather is gorgeous,(sory, it pretty much always is here in L.A.!)which is good for Regan, as she just made it out of New York on a typical January day; dreary, snowing and pretty darn cold!

It is fun to read how Ms. Clark weaves several seemingly un-related characters lives to coincide with each other in the grand finale. As usual, there is a very satisfying conclusion!

This is a fun, quick read and shows a bit more of Regan's character and development since she became married to Jack. If you liked Ms. Clark's previous books featuring this character, you won't be disappointed.

humor and mystery = a winner you won't want to put down!
By L. Ruetz
I am a fan of books where I can easily relate to either the main character or to a character central to the plot. In this case of where it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any at all, I related to Abigail! The book has enough elements that all work together such as, suspense, humor, characters that are engaging, and a plot that is neither too overly complicated nor easy to guess. This is a solid mystery with enough humor to make you chuckle while reading it from front to back because you won't want to put it down.

Happy Birthday
By Ted Feit
If you're in the mood for something light and short, this novel will fill the bill. It brings Regan Reilly back to Los Angeles from New York where she moved when she wed Jack "No relation" Reilly. What prompts her return is a phone call from her former LA neighbor, Abigail Feeney, requesting Regan's help in locating a former boyfriend to whom she loaned $100,000.

Regan leaves for the West Coast within hours (the whole novel takes place in just about a day). Abigail's grandmother also is due to arrive on the next day, Abigail's birthday. It seems the money originally came from the grandmother, meant to be the down payment on an apartment or home for Abigail, and as a birthday present she intends to pay for a friend's apartment with the $100,000 contributing to the purchase price. Unfortunately the former boyfriend spent the money and disappeared.

The side stories include the machinations of the boyfriend and his partner to finance a film they are attempting to make, and various calamities befalling Abigail who believes she is cursed (her birthday is Friday the 13th, there are 13 letters in her name, etc.) as well as an earthquake and other roadblocks to solving the mystery.

For some light reading or to while away some time at the beach, the novel will suit the purpose well.

Iodine: A Novel, by Haven Kimmel

#1 New York Times bestselling author Haven Kimmel makes an exhilarating foray into psychological gothic territory with the electrifying story of a young woman emerging from layers of delusion, fantasy, and lies.

With her astounding intelligence, fierce independence, and otherworldly lavender eyes, college senior Trace Pennington makes an indelible impression even as questions about her past and her true identity hover over every page. From her earliest years, Trace turned away from her abusive mother toward her loving father. Within the twisty logic of abuse, her desperate love for him took on a romantic cast that persists to this day, though she’s had no contact with her family since she ran away from home years ago. She’s eked out an impoverished but functional existence, living in an abandoned house, putting herself through college—and leading a double life: at school she is Ianthe Covington, a young woman with no past.

Trace’s solitary life is upended when she and her literature professor fall in love. As it becomes apparent that he has his own dark secrets, she’s forced to face herself and her past. After recovering a horrific, long-suppressed memory, Trace finally copes with the fallout from her brutal childhood. This unique portrait of the psychological effects of trauma is tantalizing, shocking, and ultimately hopeful.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Known particularly for the humor, wit, and charming characters that are perhaps best illustrated in A Girl Named Zippy (2002), Haven Kimmel abandons these trademarks almost entirely in Iodine, much to the general disappointment of her followers. Instead, she has crafted a dark and complex tale of duel personalities that confuses, rather than clarifies, the condition of the psychologically troubled. An unreliable narrator who reveals her story through fragmented dream journals, combined with a twisted plot line, contributes to the confusion. Yet the novel remains grounded in its striking prose, its unique portrayal of mental illness, and, most important, its captivating main character, Trace Pennington.

From Booklist
Trace Pennington is a senior at the University of the Midwest in Indiana. Living with her dog, Weeds, in an abandoned farmhouse that lacks such basic comforts as heat and a shower, Trace is in her final semester. But once she enters Professor Jacob Matthias’ Archetypal Interpretation of Literature class, she turns her intense focus solely on him, dropping her classes and even abandoning her dog to move in to his place. But as she digs into Jacob’s past to discover why his first marriage ended and what became of his wife, her own past bubbles to the surface, forcing her to face painful memories and truths. In a heady and unexpected mix of psychology, alien abduction, and Greek mythology, the ever-inventive Kimmel (The Used World, 2007) delves deeply into Trace’s damaged psyche to reveal her tragic childhood and the depth of her delusions. Disturbing and haunting, Kimmel’s latest novel builds slowly and ominously, ratcheting up the suspense right up to the final page and captivating the reader with Trace’s frightening downward spiral. --Kristine Huntley

Review
"In her fourth novel, Kimmel offers a beautifully wrought portrait of the brilliant and psychotic Trace Pennington, a runaway now scraping by in an Indiana farmhouse while completing her final year of college.... Trace is haunted by a disturbing personal history, hinted at via dreams, startling recollections and entries in her journal.... Kimmel skillfully weaves together Trace's lucid moments and her diminishing sanity, providing a full picture of a troubled woman whose identity, past and present are repeatedly called into question." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Slow and steady
By Southern Editor
It was a slow start, I admit, as I engulfed myself in Trace's boggled life and psyche. However, the deeper into the story, the more hooked I became. The language itself--incredible analogies--and interesting characters still haunt me long after finishing it. Overall, it is as enlightening as it is engaging.

Intriguing
By Gail Zieman
I have just completed reading Iodine' and I found this book to be very mysterious but yet very inviting to the reader. The story was twisted by different avenues of where and what the character seemed to be experencing. I definitely enjoyed the curiousity the author left you with at the end of each chapter and the uncertainty of what to expect next. I intend to purchase more novels by Haven Kimmel.

Mythic, pyschotherapeutic, surreal, and obtuse
By Brian Hulett
There is a certain type of reader who doesn't mind so much what he reads about so long as it's well written. I'm not quite there, but I certainly can appreciate the fluidity of this author's prose. The cover is full of quotes about her genius etc., however, and, well, I'm not quite there either.

The plot, such as it is, concerns a college psych student, I think, who is more brilliant than the other students and most of the professors, I think. She has a sister who's messed up on meth, I think, and a best friend whose husband beats her. I think.

The problem is that the novel "Iodine" continuously slips in and out of dream states, journal entries, delusions, and reality. I think. There is so much slippage that it's hard to tell. The writing is peppered with references to mythological characters and the fathers of modern psychoanalysis....well, not so much peppered as smothered.

For me it's all too much. Now, if you are a female college student who has been taken with the study of same, this book may be right up your alley. For me it was a struggle to finish, and the payoff (did that really happen or was she delusional again?) not worth the ride. But I'll give you this: Her command of the language is a wonderful thing to behold. If only it meant something....

"You will be inspired, and your life will be changed in dramatic ways as you read through the pages of this book." —Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life (Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life)

"Sometimes, recovery, healing, and spiritual growth are talked about as if they are three different topics. What I like about John's work is that he brings them all together, and we find that no matter what our issues, we are all on the same path. Life's Healing Choices will be a help along that path to all who read it." —Dr. Henry Cloud, author of Boundaries (Dr. Henry Cloud, author of Boundaries and Integrity)

"This is a book whose time has come. John Baker's worldwide ministry and reputation, coupled with a strong biblical approach, make this book a must for anyone who hurts and wants God to heal them. My personal friendship with John and years of involvement in his work have shown me his heart, his calling, and his gifts to the world. I highly recommend this book." —Dr. John Townsend, psychologist, author of Who's Pushing Your Buttons? and coauthor of Boundaries (Dr. John Townsend, psychologist, author of Who's Pushing Your Buttons? and coauthor of Boundaries)

An excellent precurser to starting a Celebrate Recovery
By Ye Shall Be As Gods
I bought this along with the hardcover book with the intent of running a study group for the purpose of garnering potential initial leaders for a full blown celebrate recovery at our church, and it worked beautifully for this goal. It is laid out as a workbook to be written in during 8 small group discussion sessions and so it is best paired with the hardcover book Life's Healing Choices as it assigns homework reading out of that book before each session. John Baker does a wonderful job of laying out the recovery principles based on the beatitudes from the sermon on the mount and driving home their application to any of life's hurts, habits, and hangups. When you get Jesus involved in your recovery, true healing begins. I can also recommend the DVD version of this study that has its own workbook to go along with it. It is the same material in a different format which may work better for some groups/circumstances.

Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson, by Lyndsay Faye

From the gritty streets of nineteenth century London, the loyal and courageous Dr. Watson offers a tale unearthed after generations of lore: the harrowing story of Sherlock Holmes’s attempt to hunt down Jack the Ripper.

As England’s greatest specialist in criminal detection, Sherlock Holmes is unwavering in his quest to capture the killer responsible for terrifying London’s East End. He hires an “unfortunate” known as Mary Ann Monk, the friend of a fellow streetwalker who was one of the Ripper’s earliest victims; and he relies heavily on the steadfast and devoted Dr. John H. Watson. When Holmes himself is wounded in Whitechapel during an attempt to catch the savage monster, the popular press launches an investigation of its own, questioning the great detective’s role in the very crimes he is so fervently struggling to prevent. Stripped of his credibility, Holmes is left with no choice but to break every rule in the desperate race to find the madman known as “the Knife” before it is too late.

A masterly re-creation of history’s most diabolical villain, Lyndsay Faye’s debut brings unparalleled authenticity to the atmosphere of Whitechapel and London in the fledgling days of tabloid journalism and recalls the ideals evinced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most beloved and world-renowned characters. Jack the Ripper’s identity, still hotly debated around the world more than a century after his crimes were committed, remains a mystery ripe for speculation. Dust and Shadow explores the terrifying prospect of tracking a serial killer without the advantage of modern forensics, and the result is a lightning-paced novel brimming with historical detail that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

From Publishers Weekly
Following in the footsteps of such crime writers as Ellery Queen and Michael Dibdin, Faye pits Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper in her impressive if flawed debut. In the autumn of 1888, the savage slaughter of two prostitutes in London's East End piques Holmes's curiosity. Inspector Lestrade, no fool in Faye's rendering, calls on the unconventional sleuth for help. As the killer continues to claim more victims, the Baker Street duo spare no effort to bring the Ripper to justice. Meanwhile, a disreputable journalist accuses Holmes of being the Ripper. The author uses a convincing Watsonian voice to present versions of Holmes and his chronicler faithful to the originals. While the paucity of suspects makes guessing the killer's identity too easy and the motive for the crimes is less than convincing, Sherlockians will hope to see further pastiches of this quality from Faye. From Booklist
It has been more than 120 years since his last murder, so perhaps we should allow Jack the Ripper to rest in peace. Not a chance! The slashing murders and mutilations committed by perhaps history’s most notorious serial killer terrified the impoverished residents of the Whitechapel area of London’s East End in 1888. Because the killer was never caught, who better to track him down than the greatest Victorian-era sleuth, Sherlock Holmes? Faye narrates the investigation through the supposed memoir of Holmes’ constant companion, Dr. Watson. Faye displays a superb grasp of the known facts about the murders, and she effectively captures the vibrancy and squalor of the underclass in late-nineteenth-century London. Although her effort to mimic Conan Doyle’s literary style seems a bit strained, she knows how to unfold a tale of murder and mystery. Holmes, typically brilliant and relentless, unpeels layer after layer of confusion and deceit as the dramatic tension builds and bursts. Mystery aficionados, especially those with an interest in the Ripper murders, will find this work a worthy revisiting of the case. --Jay Freeman

Review
"At long last, an author of rare talent combines a thorough, enthusiastic knowledge of the Sherlock Holmes canon with truly rigorous research into, and respect for, what remains one of the greatest and most horrifying unsolved murder cases in modern history: the Jack the Ripper killings. Where others have failed, Lyndsay Faye's extremely impressive debut novel succeeds, on every level, providing thrilling entertainment without blatant exploitation. It will instantly take a place of distinction among the best attempts of contemporary authors to continue the work of Arthur Conan Doyle, and is, quite simply, a must for Holmes fans and Ripperologists alike." -- Caleb Carr, author of The Alienist and Killing Time

"Lyndsay Faye's depiction of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and their world is exceptional in Dust and Shadow, an exciting and grimly vivid tale that confronts the murderous Jack the Ripper with A. Conan Doyle's immortal detective better than ever before." -- The Conan Doyle Estate

"Dust and Shadow is fast-moving fun. Lyndsay Faye has done a great job of combining the romance of Sherlock Holmes's London with the menace of Jack the Ripper." -- Phillip Margolin, author of Executive Privilege and Proof Positive

"Lyndsay Faye has crafted an elegant, suspenseful thriller that feels right at home on Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes is in good hands." -- Daniel Stashower, author of The Beautiful Cigar Girl

"A well-written and atmospheric adventure, Lyndsay Faye's excellent tale of the Victorian period and the clash of arch-foes Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes makes for exciting reading. Journey back in time to the gas-lit London of the 1880s in search of the Whitechapel murderer. Come -- the game is afoot!" -- Stewart P. Evans, author of Jack the Ripper: Letters from Hell with Keith Skinner

"Lyndsay Faye's Dust and Shadow is a rare gem: A never-told story about Sherlock Holmes that rings true! The voices are near-perfect, her research impeccable -- all in all, a feast for fans of the Great Detective and the Good Doctor and for those thrilled by the hunt for Jack the Ripper!" -- Leslie S. Klinger, editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Leslie Klinger and John le Carre

"Sherlock Holmes is Jack the Ripper's mortal enemy, and never more so than in Lyndsay Faye's Dust and Shadow. This first novel has bags of atmosphere. With a great deal of skill, the fictional Holmes and Watson are carefully woven into the weft and woof of the true-life Ripper story." -- Donald Rumbelow, author of Jack the Ripper: Scotland Yard Investigates with Stewart P. Evans

"Any fan of Sherlock Holmes has at some point wished Conan Doyle had set the brilliant detective's singular mind against his most notorious real-life contemporary, Jack the Ripper. Lyndsay Faye finally makes that wish a reality. Dust and Shadow reads with authenticity and flavor -- as if Faye had been alongside Holmes and Watson witnessing their greatest challenge -- giving us a novel that Holmes fans, Ripper-case aficionados and all lovers of great stories will relish." -- Matthew Pearl, author of The Dante Club and The Last Dickens

Sherlock Holmes and 'Saucy Jack'
By Philip K. Jones
Review: This is a first novel for Ms. Faye and it is subtitled "An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson." As a Sherlockian scholar, I maintain a database of Sherlockian pastiches, parodies and related fiction. Among other things, this database keeps reference to the subjects of its entries and "Jack the Ripper" is the single most popular subject for pastiche writers, other than "The Hound of the Baskervilles." There are at least seventy five different items on file about attempts to tell the story of JACK, including Ellery Queen's excellent "A Study in Terror" and Carol Nelson Douglas' two volumes from her Irene Adler series; "Chapel Noir" and "Castle Rouge."

The literature on the Ripper killings is also complex and lengthy. Numerous individuals have been nominated for the role and reasons for the abrupt end to the killings are also legion. Among the Sherlockian offerings, the number of ripper suspects approaches seventy five with almost as many explanations offered for the end to the killings. Although the Sherlockian works are often interesting, they offer little in the way of solid evidence from history for their resolutions of the questions left by the events. The true Ripper Literature tends toward the `Police Procedural' school and is often merely gross, with little entertainment value except to sensationalists.

In this book, one is taken by the Good Doctor along on an investigation by The Master into the world of monsters. This is not the world of Vampires and Ghosties; instead a sense of growing horror brings both the investigators and the reader to the awarenes of the monsters that dwell amongst us, the human monsters that may be our neighbors or our contemporaries. Holmes and Watson are driven to face this reality and to find ways to deal with apparently `motiveless crimes.' Holmes says "But I have repeated to myself Cui bono? until I can feel the words burned upon my brain, and the only answer is No one." This adjustment in outlook is what made the Ripper Killings so difficult for contemporary society to deal with. No one could believe that Jack wandered around like a normal person, killed his victims and then dissolved back into the crowd of humanity in Whitechaple.

This novel presents an interesting solution to the identity of The Ripper and to the resolution of his fate. So far as I have read, it does not duplicate other proposed solutions, but it does seem to fit the established facts. There are a number of `unestablished facts' that surround the Ripper Murders but many of those have been debunked by one author or another and many are discussed here. The activities of Press and the reactions of the denizens of Whitechaple are well covered in this book, in fact, they are integral to it. I wish I could call it a `pleasant read' or a `good Holmesian tale,' but it is not either of these things. It is dark and disturbing and frustrating. Holmes is discouraged, the Doctor is outraged and Scotland Yard is held up to ridicule by everyone involved.

The resolution is believable and the identity given for the Ripper is plausible. The book is hard to leave for even a moment and the usual distractions of Americanisms and untimely slang are mostly absent. Holmes' investigation is real to the reader and his frustrations are apparent. The book is well worth reading and deeply disturbing.

Commendable debut and satisfying pastiche
By Z Hayes
Having grown-up on a steady diet of Sherlock Holmes' stories as well as the macabre tale of Jack the Ripper [thanks to mom who is an ardent true crime fan], my interest was piqued by this latest pastiche of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes' stories. Though I'm no Sherlockian scholar, I thought Lyndsay Faye's debut was well-written and made for a riveting read, engrossing me in the period details as much as the intriguing plot and character development.

In "Dust and Shadow", the master detective Sherlock Holmes, and his able sidekick Dr John H Watson undertake to solve a series of gruesome murders committed in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. Those familiar with the story of Jack the Ripper know that the number of victims attributed to the Ripper totaled five in all: Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth "Long Liz" Stride, "Catherine Eddowes", and "Mary Jane Kelley". In this pastiche, the author attributes another earlier murder to the Ripper, that of Martha Tabram, who was murdered on Aug 7th 1888, a victim of multiple stab wounds [39 in all].

In the process of solving the murders and uncovering the killer's identity, Holmes himself falls victim to the press of the day, and his very reputation is put on the line as he has to deal with speculations that he himself may have something to do with the murders. Thus the stage is set for a true potboiler, with rich period details and complex characterizations that had me racing through the pages.

I am amazed that this is a debut novel by the author - she writes with flair and assurance, and through the authentic re-creation of Whitechapel in 1888, manages to transport readers into a world that seems altogether familiar. The resolution of the Ripper's identity is also deftly managed, and though this is once again pure speculation, I'd have to say, Ms Faye made quite a convincing case. "Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings" is a great period thriller, and will appeal to fans of the genre as well as fans of both Holmes and "the Knife".

Ripping Yarn
By enubrius
The idea of Sherlock Holmes facing off against Jack the Ripper is such a natural (they "operated" in the same time frame) that one is surprised that Conan Doyle didn't use it himself. But no worries, at least a dozen others have used it since. Probably the best novel version is Nicholas Meyers' "The West End Horror', and, undeniably, the best film version is "Murder by Decree" starring Christopher Plummer as Holmes and James Mason as the best Watson ever! All of which is a long-winded way of saying that each new version must be viewed by, not the originality of the idea, but how well each writer pulls it off. By that standard, first time author Lyndsay Faye pulls it off very well indeed, thank you. Her Holmes, Watson, indeed all her characters, are more than credible as human beings and, within the confines of paying all due homage to the Conan Doyle canon, she manages not a few very interestting surprises of her own. A must for Sherlockians and a damn good read for anyone else!

Broken: A Love Story, by Lisa Jones

Writer Lisa Jones went to Wyoming for a four-day magazine assignment. She was committed to a long-term relationship, building a career, and searching for something she could not name.

At a dusty corral on the Wind River Indian Reservation, she met Stanford Addison, a Northern Arapaho who seemed to transform everything around him. He gentled horses rather than breaking them. It was said he could heal people of everything from cancer to bipolar disorder. He did all this from a wheelchair; he had been a quadriplegic for more than twenty years.

Intrigued, Lisa sat at Stanford’s kitchen table and watched. And she listened to his story. Stanford spent his teenage years busting broncos, seducing girls, and dealing drugs. At twenty, he left the house for another night of partying. By morning, a violent accident had robbed him of his physical prowess and left in its place unwelcome spiritual powers—an exchange so shocking that Stanford spent several years trying to kill himself. Eventually he surrendered to his new life and mysterious gifts. Over the years Lisa was a frequent visitor to Stanford’s place, the reservation and its people worked on her, exposing and healing the places where she, too, was broken. This is her story, intertwined with Stanford’s, and it explores powerful spirits, material poverty, spiritual wealth, friendship, violence, confusion, death, and above all else, love.

From Publishers Weekly
Freelance journalist Jones tells the story of Arapaho medicine man Stanford Addison, a quadriplegic and gifted horse trainer and his effect on animals: The horses would gather around, their liquid brown eyes fixed on him. He'd roll away across the dirt. They'd put their noses down and follow him until he stopped rolling. Jones chronicles the Addison family's triumphs and losses on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, a place plagued by poverty and defined by struggle. Along the way, Jones takes in lost souls, like the half-melted cowboy Moses. At a crossroads in her life, Jones—much like those she cares for—is spiritually lost, but while in Wyoming, she stumbles upon her own journey of self-discovery. With an eye for detail, Jones brings each character to life; she describes Addison as [t]his paralyzed, six-toothed, one-lunged Plains Indian [who] would take a drag of his KOOL Filter King, sigh, and say something like 'I guess the thing I miss most since the accident is ski jumping.'  At the book's core are the themes of healing, redefining family and home, and finding your center. In the end, Jones reveals the beauty, ruin—and spirituality—of life on the rez. (May 12)

A starred review! As the subtitle suggests, this is indeed a love story, but not in the typical romantic sense. It is a chronicle of the author's spiritual journey and growth and a peek at the realities of life on an Indian reservation. Jones has worked as a journalist for over 20 years in the rural West. On assignment for Smithsonian magazine, she travels to the Northern Arapaho community at Wind River Indian Reservation to write an article about a quadriplegic Native American reputed to be an expert horse trainer and medicine man. Jones finds herself immersed in an unfamiliar culture that initially makes her very uncomfortable. The routine journalistic assignment grows in depth and breadth, as Jones introduces the reader to Stanford Addison and his extended family, their horses, and their acceptance of a life that is challenging yet somehow appropriate. The author has a knack for describing events, people, and scenery so well that the reader can almost taste the weak, sugary coffee and feel the oppressive heat of the ceremonial sweat lodge. Compelling reading for those interested in Native American culture and personal journeys of self-discovery. —Debby Emerson, Rochester Regional Lib. Council, Fairport, NY

From Booklist
On an assignment for Smithsonian magazine, Jones travels to the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming to gather information for a profile of Stanford Addison, a Northern Arapaho quadriplegic horse “whisperer,” reputed to be able to teach even novices how to break and tame wild horses. Paralyzed in a horrific accident at age 20, Addison tells Jones of his “twelve-year transition from a rageful, suicidal young quadriplegic to a medicine man”—for he is considered a spiritual leader as well as a renowned horse trainer. By the time the article is published in 2003, Jones has forged a bond with Addison, his friends, and family. When her peripatetic boyfriend goes to Tibet to hone his meditative skills, Jones begins making longer visits to Wyoming, following Addison on his sweat lodge circuit and visiting him in the hospital when setbacks occur. More examples of Addison’s horse-training methods would have broken up the repetitive accounts of sweat lodges and Jones’ amazement at his unexplained “powers”; nevertheless, her unique experience with this unusual man makes for compelling reading. --Deborah Donovan

Antidote to the pursuit of power and things
By Lowell P. Beveridge
So this privileged, educated white journalist from Colorado goes to Wyoming on a four day assignment to do an article about this Native American shaman, a quadriplegic who has a reputation for taming horses and curing people. That assignment could have produced a great story, but an even better one is told in this book - how her relationship with Stanford Addison changed her life completely.
How could an experienced professional journalist commit such a breach of professional objectivity and allow herself to become the center of the story? In partial answer, readers will learn about Stan's easy familiarity with the world of spirits - both good and malevolent. If you don't become a believer, you will at least find it easy to suspend disbelief. If you are familiar with twelve step programs you will recognize the author's qualities of honesty, openness, and willingness along with a healthy dose of humility.
In the closing chapter I found this quote which resonated with me: "One of the best things I'd developed around Stan was a place in my mind where things were neither confirmed nor denied but remained mysterious. I mean, really, so we really think we've got it all figured out? And what kind of eyes did I want to cast on the world? The eyes of someone who is okay with not knowing everything, or the eyes of a litigator, demanding a complete set of data every time the road changed directions?"
Those seeking spiritual relief from the pursuit of power and things will gain incite and inspiration from Lisa Jones' account of love and healing in a setting of political powerlessness and economic poverty.

Spiritual Journey complete with a Quadriplegic Native American Shamen and a Courtship Romance
By Robert Markowitz
With wit and charm, Lisa Jones takes us along on her spiritual journey, complete with a quadriplegic Native American shamen and a courtship romance. It's very easy to identify with this savvy but vulnerable author, and the reader never feels manipulated.

As Stan, the shamen, teaches Jones to meet each day with humility, surrender, and heart, Jones gradually sheds her "big" personality, and lets her heart shine through.

The emphasis is less on exotic metaphysical experiences and more on subtle inner transformation, and Jones pulls it off because she is a sincere, talented writer, committed to telling Stan's story and her own.

It's not about the healer...
By Judith Paley
...but much more about the 'healee'. And once I got over the promise of the preface wherein Ms. Jones dangles a remarkable scenario between a quadriplegic Indian healer and a wild horse to draw us into this story, I settled into the more or less interesting journey of a self-absorbed, modern woman soothing her inner child on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.

While tedious and difficult at times, mirroring perhaps daily life on society's edge, this was, overall, an engaging read, particularly the last third of the book. Despite Ms. Jones's penchant for random, pointless anecdotes from her days spent in the Addison household, she ultimately paints a vivid picture of life, love, and loss among the Arapahoe Indians.

She does not, however, capture more than the most superficial pass at the complexity of Stanford Addison, the crippled healer of broken spirits, both animal and human. I was disappointed by the omission, and left wishing for the untold other half of this story.

Avid reader
By T. Kelly
I would most definitely recommend this book to someone else, in fact I already have. I feel that the author did a grat job of brining the character to life. A character that many people can relate to. This book appeals to those who love to read as well as those who have never picked up a book before. It tells the tale of a struggle that many young people are faced with today. I enjoyed reading it. I felt like I was a part of their lives and I knew each individual personally. I embraced them as a part of my circle so I was not surprised when I cried and laughed the same times they did.

Day 1

RESTORATION
Discovering the True You

The more we get what we now call "ourselves" out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become.
-- C.S. Lewis

The absolute surrender of everything into His hands is necessary. If our hearts are willing for that, there is no limit to what God will do for us or to the blessing He will bestow.
-- Andrew Murray

We loved our home, but after living there awhile, it seemed that something was wrong. That fireplace: it just didn't quite say, "Sit by me and get cozy." After a few years of watching the paint flake off, my wife, Stacey, said, "What would happen if we restored the bricks to their original color?" Ugh, I thought, picturing all the work it would take. What would happen? Major headaches, that's what!

"Sure, honey," I said. "Let's do it." And so the restoration process began. After the fi rst few "guaranteed" products failed, we sought and followed a professional's advice (always a good idea). We took off the old paint, wire brushed the bricks, applied stain, and lost our tempers a few more times than I'm pleased to admit.

Then one day it was done. We stood back and admired the earthy red beauty of those bricks, looking just as their maker had intended. "It's beautiful!" our daughter Jessica exclaimed. "It was hard work, but it was worth it!" My aching muscles agreed. There's nothing quite like natural beauty.

We serve a God of restoration who wants to bring us back to his original design. While the fireplace had no choice about submitting to our renovation, you and I are free to choose whether we'll surrender to his control. On the surface, that sounds like an easy choice to make, like trusting the hairstylist to know what will look best on you. But in practice...well, let's just say that if it were easy, a lot of pastors would have nothing to do.

In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses impressed upon the children of Israel the importance of always choosing God's way over their own when he told them: "When you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you" (Deuteronomy 30:2-3). God is ready and waiting to bring out his best in each one of us -- but first we must surrender to him.

What Surrender Means

Many people have the wrong idea about what it means to surrender to God. In her book Dangerous Surrender, Kay Warren explains:Surrender is a dirty word to many of us. It has mostly negative connotations. Some synonyms are give in, give up, admit defeat, lay down your arms, submit, yield, capitulate.... One of the most deeply held illusions of Westerners such as me is that we are tough and independent and quite sure that we don't need anyone else. We carry these illusions over into our spiritual lives as well, and doing so keeps many from following Christ. "Surrender to God? No thanks. I can do life by myself." Even those of us who have acknowledged our need for Jesus Christ to be our Savior have a difficult time surrendering our will to him on a daily basis; we're just too full of ourselves, too much in control, too proud."

What Kay describes is exactly where I was when I first asked Christ into my life. I'd heard that I had a heavenly Father who loved me and wanted to help me. Believe me, I was ready for that message. After years of trying to please a dad who didn't really care and then trying to live up to a false image of myself, I was lonely and tired. But it was much later when I finally invited Jesus to be in the center of my life, where he belongs. When I finally switched places with God and fully surrendered to him, everything in my life changed. It was as if God had pushed the Reset button and restored the original settings that had been lost for all those years.

Today I'm living the life God intended for me from the beginning. He's taken all the junk I went through as a kid -- the abusive, alcoholic father, my overeating to compensate for not feeling loved, the pressure I felt to live up to someone else's idea of perfection -- and given me back the real Erik Rees. He has convinced me that only I can be me. And by the same token, only you can be you.

Anything You Want to Be -- Or Who God Made You to Be?

I recently finished reading a great book, Pinocchio Parenting: 21 Lies We Tell Our Kids, by Chuck Borsellino. Guess what one of the top lies is that parents tell their kids? "You can be anything you want to be." Have you heard that phrase before? I have. Did you hear it growing up? I did. If you have kids now, have you ever told them that? I sure have. The phrase you can be anything you want to be sounds so good, doesn't it? But this idea has a big problem: it's a lie!

The truth is, you can't be anything you want to be. When you were born, you were given a specific set of gifts, talents, and passions, and a unique personality. Then, as you grew, you went through a series of experiences -- some good and some not so good. Perhaps you even had a few devastating moments. All those things are tools God uses to make you into the unique you he's had in mind from the start. But you've got to let go and let the master makeover artist do his work.

Over the next few days, we'll look at various areas of our lives that we need to inventory to make sure we're living truly surrendered lives. We must give every aspect of our lives -- our past, our present, and our future -- to God so that he can guide us. In the weeks ahead, I'll ask you a few tough questions because I care about you and want to see you living the life that God intends for you -- a life that many want but few take the time to strive toward. Although I truly desire to see you find freedom in who you are and what you do, what matters most is that God wants this for you. He designed you to be you and wants you to trust him with your life.

As you think about making this fresh start and renewed relationship, I must ask you a critical question -- one of the most important you'll ever have to answer: where is God in your life right now? There are only three real possibilities. He is either:1. Outside your life
2. Inside your life, or
3. At the center of your life

When God is outside our lives, he has no chance to finish his good work. When God is inside our lives, he'll control only what we give to him. However, when God is at the center, given full access, he can begin his work of restoring our broken lives.

So I ask you again, where is God in your life?

The Bible says, "God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start. Now I'm alert to God's ways; I don't take God for granted. Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I'm watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes" (Psalm 18:20 MSG).

Could you use a fresh start with God? Do you feel like your life is an unfinished puzzle? God wants to put it back together -- and only he knows where all the pieces go. He wants to rewrite the story of your life, but you've got to recognize that he has always been its author. The psalmist David knew what that felt like when he wrote, "Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be -- you get a fresh start, your slate's wiped clean" (Psalm 32:1 MSG). If you want your slate wiped clean, you've got to give God the eraser. Are you catching the drift here? Give it all to God...that's what you do when you surrender.

The Surrendered Life = The Significant Life

We hear a lot of talk about living a significant life, as if it's something on the other side of the fence that we must work toward, the ultimate goal. But I would argue that we can live a significant life every day -- once we understand God's equation: the surrendered life = the significant life.

Let's take a look at what God promises to those who choose the surrendered life, as opposed to continuing in a self-centered life. Following are the wonderful benefits of allowing God to live at the center of our lives.

Purpose for Living

As God prepared Moses to confront Pharaoh and demand that he release the Israelites from their Egyptian captivity, he said, "I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth" (Exodus 9:16). You and I may not be called to lead a nation, but we all have the purpose of showing God's power through our lives so that his name will be glorified through us.

Paul tells us, "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). Beyond showing God's power to the world through our lives, discovering our purpose allows us to see what God created us to do.

But discovering God's purpose for our lives is impossible unless we first surrender to him our dreams, our hopes, our plans, and our ambitions. The Bible says, "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails" (Proverbs 19:21).

God desires to show you the specific purpose he put you on earth to fulfill. That's great news!

Peace of Mind

Almost since time began, mankind has been on a quest for peace. Our world is continually in conflict, yet, somewhere in our hearts, we know this is not how it should be. We talk about peace, we put visualize WORLD PEACE bumper stickers on our cars, and at Christmastime we sing songs about peace on earth. So why is peace so elusive?

Jesus promised his disciples, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27). This world may never have peace, but...

The discovery of a lifetime
By Truth Pursuer
Next to becoming a Christian, nothing has changed my life like realizing God made me the way I am ON PURPOSE--to accomplish what he made me to do! And that goes for every one of us.

Only You Can Be You is a three-week adventure in discovering all those amazing pieces that make up you, and then figuring out how they've been perfectly designed to fit together. It's like putting together the puzzle that is you, only what you end up with isn't meant to go back in the box or be put in a frame on your wall. The idea is you go out and use that completed picture to do what only you can do.

I love what Erik Rees has to teach us in this thoughtful, passionate book. He knows what he's talking about, because it's his story too.

I encourage you to pick up a copy, put on a pot of coffee, pull up a chair--and get to know yourself. You have nothing to lose . . . and a life not wasted to gain.

Great book! Easy read!
By Rick Brotherton
Wow! I wish every book was like this. What makes this book so cool is that it combines 21 days of personalized coaching through[...]. And it's FREE! You just sign up and then everyday you get an email that reminds you what pages you should be reading that day and there's also a short video from the author. It's kinda neat to hear what he has to say about the book and the meaning you should be taking away. I know it's just a video, but it's like having coach there to guide your though the book. The book itself talks about how we each have a specific purpose in life and shows how to discover your purpose. I guess that's the "Only You Can Be You" part!

Definitely a must read. I highly recommend it for anyone wondering if life has more to offer than 9 to 5.
