Enterprise NX-01

"Admit it, Jonathan. You're already at least as bored with this mission as I am."

Unable to deny his fellow NX-class starship captain's assertion, Captain Jonathan Archer smoothed his rumpled uniform and leaned back in his chair with a resigned sigh. Porthos, whom Archer had thought was fast asleep behind him at the foot of his bed, released a short but portentous bark, as if voicing agreement with the woman who looked on expectantly from the screen. Archer turned away from the lone desktop terminal in his quarters just long enough to toss a small dog treat to the beagle, who immediately became far too preoccupied with the noisy business of eating to tender any further opinions.

"My feelings really don't matter all that much, Erika," Archer said to the image on the terminal. "And frankly, neither do yours. This was Starfleet's call to make, not ours."

From across the nearly six-parsec-wide gulf of interstellar space that currently separated Enterprise from Columbia, Captain Erika Hernandez punctuated her reply with a withering frown. "All right. Who are you, and what have you done with Jon Archer?"

His lips curled in an inadvertent grin. "I'm just an explorer, Erika. I don't make policy. And I don't like babysitting Earth Cargo Service freighter convoys any more than you do. But you've got to admit that there have been enough attacks on the main civilian shipping lanes over the past few weeks to justify keeping Earth's two fastest and best-armed starships out on continuous patrol, at least for a while."

She shook her head slightly. "Maybe. But not indefinitely. And certainly not if you're interested in treating the underlying disease instead of just the symptoms."

Archer couldn't really disagree with that either. The past six weeks of mostly uneventful patrol duty, spent endlessly covering the same roughly twenty-light-year stretches outbound from Earth, followed by a virtually identical inbound course which intermittently brought Enterprise and Columbia together from opposite directions, put him in mind of the ancient Greek myth about a man whose misdeeds had earned him the divine punishment of rolling a huge boulder up a hill, only to have to repeat the process endlessly after reaching the summit and seeing it roll down again. Archer sometimes half-seriously considered asking Starfleet to send the new NX-class starship Challenger, still under construction in the skies above San Francisco, to relieve him -- after rechristening it Sisyphus, of course.

But he knew better than to think that either he or Captain Hernandez could do much to change the minds of Admirals Gardner, Black, Douglas, Clark, Palmieri, or any of the rest of Starfleet Command's determined brass hats. After all, each of them had shot down essentially the same argument Erika was making today when Archer had first brought the topic before them weeks ago.

"We still don't have any hard proof that the attacks against our freighters are anything other than exactly what they appear to be," Archer said. "The work of rogue pirates and freebooters."

"That's probably only because those alleged 'rogue pirates and freebooters' have been keeping us both so busy waiting and watching, not to mention wearing a triangular groove in the space between Earth and Draylax and Deneva, that we haven't had any time to go hunt down the real culprits."

"The Romulans," Archer said.

She nodded, confirming that he had completed her unvoiced thought. "Or the Klingons. Or maybe even both. The disruptor traces we found on the hull debris are consistent with either of them."

"As nasty as the Klingons can be, my money's on the Romulans," Archer said.

Her eyes widened. "Why? You know something I don't?"

He nodded. "Is this line secure on your end?"

"I trust my mother and God, in that order," she said with a nod of her own. "Everybody and everything else has to go through the most stringent of security protocols. Go ahead."

He paused to gather his thoughts. From the edge of the bed, Porthos released a low growl that almost made Archer wonder if his own dog wasn't spying on him on behalf of Admiral Gardner.

"The attack on Coridan has overshadowed just about everything else that's been going on in a dozen sectors in every direction," Archer said at length.

"That's understandable. Over a billion people have died on Coridan Prime so far, and people are still dying there three months later thanks to all the environmental damage, not to mention the damned civil war they're fighting. Have you found some evidence linking the Romulans to the Coridan attack?"

"No," he said with a glum shake of his head. "The Romulans are way too subtle to leave any fingerprints behind."

She frowned again. "So why bring up Coridan?"

"Because Starfleet has been able to use it as a diversion to keep a lid on something we discovered on Andoria a little bit before the Coridan attack. The admiralty has classified my report on the subject. But in my judgment you have a legitimate need to know what they've been sitting on these past few months."

Hernandez's brow furrowed. "You've found evidence of some sort of Romulan incursion on Andoria?"

"Indirect evidence. But it's as close to a smoking gun as you're going to get with people as slick as the Romulans. You've been briefed about their use of telepaths to pilot remote-controlled attack ships, right?"

"Of course. I know that you and your crew destroyed a telepath-guided Romulan prototype last year."

"Right. But what you haven't been told is that the Romulans have recently been trying to get their hands on more telepaths for similar military applications, using the services of third parties brokered through Adigeon Prime."

A look of understanding crossed her olive features. "The Adigeons. Gotta love those tight-lipped Swiss banker types."

"Believe me, the Adigeons make the old Swiss bankers look like the village gossip. In spite of that, we managed to track down and rescue about three dozen Aenar-Andorian telepaths that a third party had captured on behalf of the Romulans."

Hernandez's face became a study in horror. "Enslaving all those people. Just to launch another remote-control attack against us."

"And they're not going to back off, either. Not when they can just lie in the weeds and wait until they're ready to try again."

The horror on Hernandez's countenance slowly solidified into an almost palpable anger, and her words carried the timbre of blood and fire. "And you're content to let Starfleet just go on reacting instead of actually doing something?"

Archer endured her not-so-subtle criticism with all the stoicism he could muster. "What makes you think I'm not doing anything?"

"Let's see. Maybe it's the fact that you're still out here patrolling the boonies, just like I am."

"Let's just say I'm working on the problem through a back channel and leave it at that."

"I know you have political pull that I don't, since you're the man who saved Earth from the Xindi. But I can't believe you've got a special back channel with Starfleet Command that I don't even know about."

Archer grinned. "What makes you think I was talking about Starfleet Command? Their hands are full at the moment just keeping the Coalition from collapsing into four squabbling pieces, especially since the Coridan attack."

"Unlike either of us," Hernandez said as the door chime sounded.

"Be careful what you wish for, Erika," Archer said, even though he was half hoping for news of another so-called pirate raid, if only to break up the tedium of the past several days of utterly fruitless patrolling. He held up a hand for silence, then turned toward the door.

"Come."

The door hissed open and Commander T'Pol stepped gingerly over the slightly raised threshold, then paused in the open hatchway. She wore a standard-issue, dark blue Starfleet duty uniform, a sight to which he was still only beginning to become accustomed, though she had adopted it nearly three months ago. To the Vulcan woman's credit, she appeared as comfortable and unself-conscious wearing Earth's service attire as she had in the somewhat more formfitting uniform of the Vulcan military from which she had retired over a year earlier. Despite the lateness of the hour, her clothing looked fresh and neatly pressed.

"I apologize for disturbing you, Captain, but I have received some news that you will wish to hear immediately," she said, still hesitating in the open hatchway. She glanced toward the image of Captain Hernandez, which was clearly visible from her vantage point. "Am I interrupting anything?"

Archer smiled gently at his second-in-command. Long before their respective careers had conspired to draw them literally light-years apart, there had once been a time when anyone "walking in" on him and Erika Hernandez might indeed have interrupted something rather intimate. Had Hernandez, who had never been sanguine about making love in Porthos's presence -- and was allergic to pet dander to boot -- not issued a fateful it's-me-or-the-beagle ultimatum, the lives and careers of both captains might have taken radically different trajectories. Only very rarely, such as that time his canine companion had become fragrantly flatulent after snarfing up an entire wheel of Chef's fancy Gruyère cheese, did the captain have cause to regret his decision. Regardless, fair was fair, and since he'd known Porthos longer than he'd known Hernandez, the dog had ultimately won the contest.

Remaining in his chair, Archer fanned the fingers of his left hand toward himself in a "come in" gesture. "Not at all, Commander. I'm sure you know Captain Hernandez."

T'Pol finished crossing the threshold and allowed the hatch to hiss closed behind her just as Porthos jumped...

The No-Win Scenario

When Captain Jonathan Archer is ordered to border patrol against pirates, he soon grows bored and frustrated with the assignment. But Archer knows the Romulans are up to something. After an attack from the Klingons that the government disavows, Archer must investigate and discover the truth behind the Romulans' agenda. But when odds are stacked against Archer and the Enterprise, what will he choose to do in an unwinnable scenario?

Star Trek fans will automatically remember that back in his academy days, Kirk changed the rules of the Kobayashi Maru test in order to win the no-win scenario. Here is a look at what happened with that fateful circumstance and what leads up to the eventual Earth-Romulan War.

While Archer is off making tough choices that could affect the entire coalition, Commander Trip Tucker is deep undercover posing as a Romulan trying to make sure Warp 7 technology doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Of course, danger constantly surrounds everything Trip does. And this storyline is by far the most exciting. But T'Pol makes some out-of-character choices in a strange subplot that doesn't do much to forward the story, other than let you know there's still that spark between the two and that Trip is dedicated to his mission.

Kobayashi Maru has plenty of action, suspense, political intrigue, and drama to appease any Star Trek fan. But the exciting climax at the end of the novel is the legendary account that we've all been waiting to hear, where Archer must make the toughest decision of his career. And it was a situation that I found myself considering for quite a while after finishing the book!

I would wait until the sequel, and read both at once.

This book takes a while to get going, and there are some problems for the avid ST book reader as far as characters, but that stuff can be easily dismissed because the book is an okay read. I still think the best Kobaishi Maru story is contained in New Frontier-Stone and Anvil. Anyway, with this name you would think you won't be able to put it down...but believe me, you will.

Personally, it's a book that leaves off where the most exciting part will happen in the sequel, and it's almost a shame. If the sequel is going to be as slow as this one, they should have combined the two, cut out about 30% of the boring parts of the book, and created one "page-turner".

As it is, I would wait until the sequel and read both back to back, and be done with them.

Chapter One

Dominic DiMarco is seriously hot," the makeup artist said, fanning herself.

Melissa McKnight kept her eyes trained on her BlackBerry, even though she was dying for another mouthwatering look at Dominic's hard, tanned chest. As the representative for the McKnight Sports Agency, which her father owned, she wasn't there to ogle one of its clients. Assisting pro-football players during photo shoots and charity events was her job. Just because Dominic was totally drool-worthy didn't mean she could lose her head over him in public.

Only in private.

The middle-aged woman raised her voice. "You're nuts for doing email while that man has his shirt off. When are you going to get the chance to be this close to a chest that beautiful again?"

Melissa stopped typing and looked up with a polite smile. "Everyone at the McKnight Agency is very proud of what Dominic has achieved."

She'd spent a decade concealing her lust for him. That morning she'd woken up from a lovely dream in which Dominic had been doing wonderful things to her with his mouth, his amazingly strong hands, and the thick bulge between his legs, which she tried not to stare at every Sunday when he suited up for a game. She was pretty sure she failed every time.

"I couldn't care less about football," the makeup artist said, her voice too loud for Melissa's comfort. "But that man has got amazing abs. And I'll bet you can bounce a quarter off his ass."

The photographer called for some quick touch-ups to Dominic's hair, and the chatty makeup artist ran over to dust some powder on his torso. Melissa -- and every other woman in the room -- knew Dominic didn't really need powder to cut the shine on his perfect skin: It was simply the woman's excuse to touch him.

A photo of Dominic wearing nothing but well-worn jeans and a smile was enough to melt even the coldest woman's heart...and empty her pocketbook. As one of the offensive stars of the San Francisco Outlaws, Dominic was a highlight-reel favorite every Sunday when Americans were glued to their flat-screen TVs. Melissa fell irrevocably in love.

Her adolescent hormones rose up, begging to be released. She'd never reacted like this to anyone: not the cutest boy in school, not the latest pop star. She'd never felt so much admiration for the way a football player handled the ball, with confidence but no unnecessary flash. She'd never gotten tingly all over just because a guy's black hair curled at the base of his neck.

The day Dominic signed on with her father's agency was her best -- and worst -- day rolled into one. Seeing him on a regular basis at agency events helped her gather lots of erotic data for her ever-growing fantasies about him. If only she didn't always make such a fool of herself around him! Her brain sputtered helplessly; her mouth said stupid things; she walked into tables and spilled drinks.

She'd finally decided on a pair of snug black pants her mother had bought her last year and a tight red sweater she'd borrowed from her much skinnier best friend Alice.

Watching the beautiful men and women chat, Melissa's hands grew damp and her stomach started to hurt. There was no way she could go out there; she could never compete with the supermodels enjoying her family's hospitality.

She turned to leave just as her father caught sight of her. "Melissa, come out and say hello to everyone."

Licking her suddenly dry lips nervously, praying she wouldn't make a fool of herself in front of Dominic, Melissa slowly pushed through the kitchen door and walked into the living room.

"What's that on your face?" her father exclaimed in a loud, slightly drunk voice. "And what the hell are you wearing?"

Twenty pairs of eyes turned her way, the Christmas CD playing in the background actually began to skip, and all conversation stopped.

Dying of embarrassment, Melissa barely noticed her mother moving to her side in support. Her father's blunt remarks had often hurt her feelings, but never this badly. She wanted to run out of the room, but her feet felt as heavy as bags of cement.

Desperately hoping no one else had heard her father's comments, she forced a smile. "Hi, guys," she said with a dumb little wave. She avoided Dominic's gaze. "Merry Christmas."

Two dozen gorgeous, talented men and women smiled back at her with varying degrees of pity in their eyes. It was the most awful, embarrassing moment of her life.

Her father turned to open a bottle of Cristal, and she was about to make a break for her bedroom when he peered at her again. "And what on earth did you do to your hair? It looks like you have a big orange basketball on your head."

Tears sprang to Melissa's eyes just as Dominic said, "Stop upsetting the kid." He turned to face her. "You look great," he lied, then gestured to the table of appetizers. "Are you hungry?"

Dominic's girlfriend coughed behind her hand, but Melissa knew she was disguising a giggle. Feeling like a freak show, Melissa shook her head. "I should get back to my homework now."

As soon as she turned away, her tears started falling. Dominic DiMarco would never look at her as anything other than a stupid little girl. Never.

Melissa looked up from her vivid memory to find everyone looking at her and felt her cheeks flush. Quickly, she shook off the sense that she was still seventeen, chunky, and painfully insecure. Ten years had passed since then, long enough for Melissa to transform herself from a shy, overweight teenager into a curvy, confident woman. She was currently single by choice, not because she couldn't get a date. No longer in her early twenties, she just wasn't interested in wasting her time dating guys who couldn't possibly be "the one." She was holding out for someone special... someone like Dominic.

He stepped out from under the lights and walked to her, and her heart pounded hard and fast.

"Don't worry. I'll be gentle. I promise," he said in a low voice that only she could hear.

She had no idea what he was talking about. But her body reacted to his deep, sexy voice, her nipples beading against her silk bra.

"I think I missed something," she whispered. "Why is everyone staring at me?"

He grinned, his smile slow and full of heat. Melissa felt faint. Did he have any idea of its impact? He could have any woman as his sex slave with just the white flash of his teeth.

"Benjamin just asked if you'd mind standing in for the female model for a few minutes so he can set his light meter and try out various poses."

Melissa scanned the room. "She was here a minute ago. What happened to her?"

Dominic leaned in close, his breath on her ear sending goose bumps all over her arms. "Her boyfriend just called and broke up with her. It's going to take a while to fix her makeup." He pulled back and stared into her eyes. "I completely understand if you don't want to do it. Someone else could step in instead."

The makeup artist was practically waving her hand in the air at the thought of getting to rub herself like a cat in heat against Dominic under the lights. Melissa couldn't let that happen to him. Besides, she'd have to be crazy not to jump at five minutes of blissful nearness.

She manufactured a wide smile. "No problem. I'd be happy to help."

He took her hand and squeezed it as he led her over to the lights. She'd never thought the day would come when Dominic DiMarco would be holding her hand. His palms were calloused from years of catching footballs, and she couldn't help imagining his hands sliding down her naked body, over her breasts. Her breath caught at the potent image, then from the incredible real-life sensation of Dominic wrapping a possessive arm around her waist.

Five Booksmarks from Wild on Books!

Melissa McKnight has loved Dominic DiMarco since she was seventeen years old. The daughter of a famous sports agent, Melissa knows that Dominic, a successful wide receiver for the San Francisco Outlaws, is off-limits and out of her league. She works for her father and as such knows that she should remain professional with Dominic. Easier said than done because it seems that Dominic is having a hard time keeping his hands, lips and other highly gorgeous body parts to himself.

Dominic knows that his touching of Melissa is the lowest of the low. For years he has watched the gangly teenager evolve into a beautiful woman. The night he finds her tipsy in a bar frequented by other professional athletes, Dominic decides there is no way another man will ever touch her again. Game on.

Dominic and Melissa begin a blazing affair. Each tells their inner self that their involvement with the other is only temporary but secretly Dominic and Melissa ultimately realize that they are over their heads but are unable to stop seeing each other. Dominic prides himself on his control but Melissa shatters every defense mechanism he has because suddenly, what they feel for each other is no longer a game.

If I was not guilty of lusting after football players before reading GAME FOR SEDUCTION, I am certainly guilty now. Dominic DiMarco is sin personified all wrapped up in a nice, tight, hard body. He controls his emotions because if he does not, every thing he has worked for since becoming a professional football player might just blow up in his face. The only times he allows his guard down are the times he and Melissa are together. Dominic's feelings for Melissa shine through with every kiss and every touch. Melissa's feelings for Dominic have never wavered since she was a young girl. She loved him then and she loves him now.

GAME FOR SEDUCTION should come with its own warning label stating, "Genuine emotions and scorching hot sex!" GAME FOR SEDUCTION engaged me as a romantic first and foremost and then kept me enthralled as a reader with skillfully written and often times naughty scenes. Bella Andre scores a winning touchdown with GAME FOR SEDUCTION. It is powerfully seductive and explosively passionate. Readers should snatch this baby up immediately!

As a side note, GAME FOR SEDUCTION is the second book in Bella Andre's new series titled The Bad Boys of Football. I always recommend reading books in order so readers would benefit from grabbing up the first installment, Game for Anything. Sexy Romance with Football Agent and her Client (B+ Grade)

Bella Andre also has a new series out called the Bad Boys of Football and her latest in this series is Game For Seduction. Melissa McKnight works for her father, who is a very successful sports agent. Her dream is to be an agent herself, but her father doesn't think she is good enough to be one. Yup, he is one of those parents who treats his child like crap. But Melissa wants to prove her father wrong. One of the McKnight Sports Agency's biggest clients is the wide receiver of the San Francisco Outlaws, Dominic DiMarco. Dominic is a really great guy who doesn't drink, party hard or sleep around. And ever since Melissa has been seventeen years old, she has been crushing after Dominic. But Melissa feels Dominic doesn't even know she exists. How wrong she is.

Dominic wants Melissa, and badly, but since they work together and are professionals, he has this hands off rule. But it is getting much harder for him to not act on his desire for the lovely Melissa. And when Melissa tries to take on a new client all by herself, who is pretty much the ultimate bad boy of the NFL, Dominic takes it upon himself to watch over Melissa. Dominic is a tad jealous because he thinks Melissa will fall for this new upcoming star. So, he in turn offers himself as a client to Melissa. Of course he wants whole lot more where Melissa is concerned.

This is the only second book I have ever read by Bella Andre and it was one sexy, almost borderline erotic read. I absolutely love those stories where the heroine thinks she is not good enough for the handsome to die for hero. Dominic has these great set of morals, mainly because of something that happened to him when he was a teen. But when it comes to sex and with the one woman he wants, well, those self imposed rules he has placed upon himself are meant to be broken.

Game For Seduction is a pretty fast read with a romance that I really did enjoy.

But keep reading and you'll see how and why the arranged-marriage approach is both a proven route to a stable and happy relationship and particularly insightful when it comes to many of our contemporary dating and love dilemmas.

So if I didn't have an arranged marriage, how did I learn so much about this approach and how it can help us?

I learned these lessons through five years of research and more than three hundred interviews with women in arranged marriages. And along the way, I found that arranged marriages have a lot to teach us about dating, love, and long-term happiness. From finding a great partner to falling in love, sharing a home, building a family and -- yes -- hot sex, arranged marriages offer amazingly practical and effective relationship strategies. And the best part is that you don't actually need to have an arranged marriage to feel the benefits.

No matter how counterintuitive it may sound, the arranged-marriage approach to relationships offers lessons and guidelines that are increasingly relevant to the modern dating scene. But until now, these lessons have been largely ignored and overlooked, even though they are lessons that many of us can benefit from tremendously.

I firmly believe that there has never been a better time to be a woman than right now. Think about it: compared to any other moment in history, we have unlimited freedom for opportunity, fun, and sexual adventure. And then, when we decide we're ready, we can also have a stable, fulfilling marriage and family. But there's one catch: finding and sustaining and enjoying marriage seems to be getting harder and harder. That's one reason why women are increasingly taking lessons from alternative models from the past (remember The Rules, anyone?) and, as in this book, using these models to modify their approach to commitment and lasting love.

According to Marian Salzman, coauthor of Next Now: Trends for the Future, "Today is the era of the arranged couple who fall in love around the birth of the first child. It sounds traditional, but in some ways so much of the future is back to the past, turbo-charged."

Increasingly, both men and women are realizing that the fantasy of randomly meeting and instantly recognizing "the one" is unlikely to happen on its own. So instead of passively waiting, they are deciding that practical, pro-active measures must be taken. Just as in an arranged marriage, these are measures that take a more direct, down-to-earth, and ultimately successful approach to long-term relationship success. "This is about picking a marriage partner -- not about falling into bed for a world-class romance," says Salzman, whose trend forecasts are based on pattern recognition and the issues that style makers are talking about. "There is a newfound interest in letting someone else solve the love dilemma," she explains. "We're on option overload, and we're maxed out in terms of time, and we'd all love a partner. So it makes sense to enlist those who know us best to forge a proper and satisfying match."

Much of this is thanks to the Internet. From chat rooms to online dating services, the Web has essentially become our electronic yenta. Time magazine estimates that approximately 40 million Americans regularly log on to dating websites and services. Online ads, matchmakers, and speed dating are no longer considered to be the hallmark of people who are "desperate." The old stigmas that came with using these methods to find a partner are quickly disappearing, especially since the participants are often confident, busy professionals who are increasingly trying to search out partners the way they would a new job.

The statistics are compelling. For instance, a 2005 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project showed that 15 percent of U.S. adults knew someone who had had a serious relationship with or married a person whom he or she met online, and 31 percent knew someone who has used an online dating service.

Some websites even feel like modern versions of ancient traditions. Consider how social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn act like social registries where you can "verify" a potential mate's social standing, appearance, and future prospects. On these sites you can even ask a mutual friend for an introduction to a complete stranger -- as is the custom for arranged marriages.

A Marriage Arranged by America?

If the idea of your parents or extended family picking out your husband seems strange, then just imagine leaving it to a group of network executives or worse -- the American viewing public!

In her book The Meaning of Wife, Anne Kingston discusses the success of Fox Network's Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, or, as she describes, "The commercialized update of the Cinderella tale." This was the show where fifty women between the ages of 19 and 43 were selected from a pool of over a thousand women who sent in videotaped biographies. The lucky fifty then got to compete to become the bride of a millionaire they had never met. Oh yeah, and they also got to take home an Isuzu Trooper and a $35,000, 3-carat engagement ring! So how was the bride selected? Well, the groom, a motivational speaker cum stand-up comic cum real estate tycoon, asked the women a series of questions, ranging from what they would do if they found a woman's name and phone number in their new husband's pocket to whether they wanted to have children.

The success of this show (the final episode on February 15, 2000, drew more than 22 million viewers) led to several other spin-off shows along the same lines, including The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Joe Millionaire, Married by America, and Race to the Altar.

Why am I bringing this up? My point is that arranged marriages aren't as foreign as you might think. The overwhelming response to these TV show setups seems to indicate that more and more people are interested in alternative methods for finding a life partner. Although I'm not sure how I'd feel about millions of people voting on my future happiness!

Online dating, matchmaking, and other assisted-dating services are growing in popularity (come on, admit it: you've watched The Bachelor -- or at least The Bachelorette!). Why? Because, sadly, most women in our society have been groomed to think that one day our wealthy, handsome Mr. Right will just walk into our lives (with little or no effort on our part) and lead us away to blissful lives of happily ever after. We have been taught to believe in a fairy tale, and many of us spend our twenties, our thirties, and even our forties waiting for that fairy tale to come true. And when it doesn't happen, we turn to the Internet.

Could it happen? Well, theoretically it could. Will it? Probably not. But the belief or hope, however faint, that it might is what leaves so many women unhappy and alone. I want to change all that for you and for anyone you know and care about who's stuck in this situation. And I know that the answer can be found in these love lessons from arranged marriages. Here's why.

I had my doubts about the concept

As a homeschooling mom I've known families who have taken an active role in helping their children find suitable spouses. Though I am eager for my kids to find the right spouses when the time is right, I've never been especially keen on the idea of an arranged marriage. Seems like too big a decision to hand off to others.

And yet a few weeks ago when I randomly clicked on an AOL story that featured this book, I was fascinated by the author's twist. Not 'is arranged marriage a good idea for everyone?' but rather, 'what things work about this idea?'

Turns out, there's plenty that works. Enough that after I roared through the book in three days flat, I handed it off to my 18 and 20 year old daughters to read. I believe that anyone would do well to take such a considered approach to finding a spouse.

Women featured in the book talked about the peace that comes from knowing that you are compatible on a foundational level. Not on the froufrou you learn when dating such as 'do we like the same movies?' but the deep questions that can bind together or tear apart a marriage such as 'how will we raise our children?' and 'do we agree that this marriage is forever?'

Turns out when loving families are given input in the selection, they often have a firm grasp on two things: #1-- Things that the young people themselves would wish for and need in a mate. And #2-- Issue that are truly important in ensuring a lasting relationship.

I still believe that young people should be able to choose a mate on their own. But there is a lot to be said for getting feedback from loved ones who know you very well. I believe that if more people knew how to look at core values instead of surface stuff right from the start in a relationship, they'd greatly improve the odds of a happy match, the kind that actually makes it to 'as long as we both shall live.'

This thoughtful book is one I am very glad to have read.

Common sense advice that's not so common

This book does not promote arranged marriages, but it boils them down to some key concepts that can help people enter marriage with more realistic expectations which will then allow them to be happier within their marriage. The book diminishes the importance of finding a soulmate, of keeping your options open while dating, of having similar interests/hobbies, and focusing on Hollywood's definition of romance. Instead, it recommends focusing on compatible values, figuring out what you need in a marriage partner so you know what to look for, creating a balanced social life, and being willing to commit.

The book is engagingly written with lots of stories and anecdotes interspersed within the text. It gives you exercises to complete which really help to clarify your own expectations, desires, and needs and to see how the book's lessons should be applied in your own life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a committed, long-term relationship, though the book is geared toward women.

Good Advice to Consider Before Marriage

This is one of those books I wish I had read before I got married. I have always felt that an arranged marriage would be perfect for me as I do not believe that romantic love easily withstands some of the real challanges of life. I highly recommend that it be read before marriage.

Richard Cohen spends the first page of this painful onslaught apologizing for his denunciation of Israel

I was conflicted in writing this review because there are so few good books about Israel and my knee-jerk response to a book which doesn't call Israel "evil incarnate" is to say, with much gratitude, thanks. That being said, I expect more from thinking individuals. So here goes:

Richard Cohen spends the first page of this painful onslaught apologizing for his denunciation written a few years ago: "The greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake."

By page two he forgets his apology and tiredly tries to live up to the theme of the book, which is: embarrassed Jew who desperately needs to explain away his Israeli compatriots actions in the defense of their land. We have heard this sardonic whining from plenty of people, journalist in particular, who claims to be Israel's friend but must tell the "truth". Like some drug intervention gone wrong, Cohen heaps the anti-Israel hyperbole and leaves journalistic balance hanging on a tree branch to fend for itself. All this in the name of being a Jew and "friend" of Israel. Among his claims:

1-Israel is a European colony (really? Colonialism requires you to represent a government interest. Who were the Israel-bound Jews representing? Nazi Germany? Soviet Russia? And why ignore the Sephardic Jews--kicked out of every Arab country--who are over 52% of the Israeli population?)

2-Israel is the bully and the Palestinians are the victims (Hmm, so if you start a war, wishing to kill all the Jews, and lose it, you are a victim? ok. And the fact that the Palestinian Arab Patriarchal leader was a Nazi--The Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husseini--and wanted to bring the Holocaust to the MidEast AND created several divisions of Muslim SS, that fact certainly has no bearing on Palestinian Arab violence today, right?)

3- This chapter title: "Antisemitism: A Gift to the Jews" (what the hell?)

4-The canard that Israel will become overrun by Arabs and has to give everything away. Untrue. ( https://www.commentarymagazine.com/foreign-policy/middle-east/israel/stats-debunk-demographic-threat-to-israel/ ) In fact the only people who think a two state solution is plausible are the EU and the USA. Arabs have never consider a two-state solution. Look at any poll of Palestinian Arabs and those results will tell you that Arabs still want to throw the Israelis into the sea. Any peace treaty is just part one of full assimilation. Israelis still feel that coexistence will work, but to secure safety for all of Israel, an Israeli solution with eventual citizenship for Palestinian Arabs is in order.

5-Israel is a dilemma for American Jews. (Say this while beating your chest). Jews that apologize for their existence will always be embarrassed by other Jews acting muscularly, but as the saying goes, Israel is located in a really bad neighborhood and the correct response to a fist in the face is an aggressive defense--not the apology for living that Cohen gives.

Positive point you've been waiting for: Cohen does have an okay chapter on the War of Independence and the Arab response to the Palestinian Arabs: round them up and throw them into refugee camps.

Best book on the Jewish issue

Cohen did his research well and seems well balanced in his depiction of the problem. The book shows both sides of the question and goes back to the roots of the problem. It is easy to see that there is no simple solution. I learnt a lot in Cohen's book. I knew not much about the plight of Palestinians even before Israel came into being. I knew very little about the expulsion of Germanic peoples from neighbouring countries to Germany. I knew little of the Jewish issue before Hitler. I also learnt some interesting trivia. For example, it had never occurred to me that the Jews were the first monotheists and that they invented the Day of Rest. Wow! a day of rest, that was progressive! If only the issue could be resolved by the Jewish teaching cited by Cohen, of "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow" which resonates with people of every faith... This book can bear to be read twice: it is too much to absorb in one go. I always get my books from the library; I just purchased a copy of this one and also one for a friend.

As a youngish gentile who's only knowledge of Jewish culture and history I learned from my High School football coach/history teacher (when discussing WWII) and the Bible, I was fascinated by this book. Watching the anti-Israel movement pick up momentum with liberal friends (a popular talking point is Israel's killing of Palestinian civilian's in a disproportionate number), I wanted to educated myself further. I think anyone who has an opinion on the I/P conflict should read this, whether or not you agree with his stance.

THE LIFE

April 2007, Chicago

As the sun rose above the icy waters of Lake Michigan and sunlight began to stream through the blinds of a luxury high-rise apartment, Ricardo Diaz rolled over in the large silk-sheeted bed he occupied and grabbed a handful of his bedmate's ample bosom. He squeezed the firm golden mounds, tweaking the hardening dark nipples until the woman lying next to him stirred and moaned. Ricardo's hands began to travel down her abdomen until he reached her box and opened it. His fingers moved expertly, flicking her pleasure button until her juices began to flow. Ricardo stretched lazily and propped his hands behind his head after clicking on the forty-two-inch plasma-screen television mounted on the bedroom wall. He went over all the things he had to do that day in his mind. After he left his Chula, he'd head to his business and make a few stacks, then he'd roll through the streets and check a couple of traps. Somewhere along the way he'd put in a call to his wife; maybe he'd take her out later to dinner and a show. But not before he got breakfast in bed and some head from his side lady, who'd returned to the bedroom with a tray of steaming-hot food. But the food would have to wait. As if she'd read his mind, Ricardo's mami chula climbed back into the bed and snuggled beneath the sheets, taking his manhood into her mouth and having a little breakfast of her own.

This is the life, Ricardo thought to himself as he received the blow job of a lifetime.

Heaven Diaz rolled over in bed to find her husband's side empty. Again. It was the second time in a week that her husband hadn't made it home. Her intuition told her that he was unfaithful, but she willed herself to believe the excuses he fed her. Ricardo loves me and he's working hard to build and maintain the wonderful life I have, she often told herself.

She got out of bed and went down the stairs of her five-thousand-square-foot home and into the kitchen. She couldn't help but marvel at the kitchen fit for a chef with its stainless-steel appliances and copper pots. Heaven had every gadget and gizmo known to the culinary world, and prepared meals fit for royalty every night of the week, but her husband was rarely home to enjoy them. When she first got married she thought that there would be candlelight and champagne every night, but her childhood fantasy was quickly marred by reality. Ricardo was a workaholic and put in long hours on the job as the owner of an exotic car sales, rental, and driver service.

But Heaven defi nitely reaped the rewards of her husband's labor. The fabulous kitchen where she whipped up meals was inside a tight, custom-built crib nestled near the shores of Lake Michigan in the Hyde Park section of Chicago. There were six bedrooms, seven and a half baths, and an indoor swimming pool in the four-story manse. Ricardo had given Heaven carte blanche when meeting with the architect who designed the home. They spared no expense when deciding what fixtures the home would have, and it was even featured in the real estate sections of the major Chicago newspapers and in home and architecture magazines.

Heaven also had the wardrobe of a queen; every garment in her closet sported a designer label. She had more shoes than Carrie Bradshaw and Imelda Marcos combined, and she had more bling than a diamond mine in Sierra Leone. Heaven drove the exotic car of her choice and switched whips whenever the whim hit. Over the past year she'd pushed a Rover, a Lambo, a Ferrari, and a Maserati. And on the rare occasions she didn't feel like driving, she had a fleet of drivers at her disposal.

She had everything that any woman could want and then some. She had everything but her husband's time, but without sacrifice one can't attain one's goals, or at least that was Heaven's rationale. One day soon, her husband would have the time to spend with her that she craved, and maybe they could even start a family. But until then, she'd have to be resigned to living in the satisfying lap of luxury, even if it was a lonely position.

Aside from perpetual loneliness, Heaven suffered from another nagging problem. She had her doubts as to where all the material things her husband lavished on her came from. Her gut told her that something was amiss. She knew that her husband made a good living and worked extremely hard; in fact, she'd helped her husband attain much of the success that he had. Heaven made a million phone calls and put in countless hours of legwork helping her husband get his business off the ground and over the years the company flourished. But Heaven had her suspicions because little by little certain things weren't adding up.

For starters, there were the late nights, no-shows, and suspicious phone calls that Rico got all hours of the night when he did find his way home. He'd have brief, stilted conversations with whoever was on the other end. Heaven would ask her husband about those things, but his excuses always left her with far more questions than answers. Then there was the abundance of cash he always seemed to have. Most men never had more than a few hundred bucks on them, but Rico traveled with wads and wads of dough that made Heaven fear that he'd be the target of a robbery sooner or later. She told him that most businessmen used credit and that he should do the same and simply pay the bills on time, but Ricardo assured her that he knew what he was doing.

There was also the fact that they lived a lifestyle more suited to an athlete or some other celebrity and not a business man; businessmen were usually far more understated. Ricardo and Heaven's assets were worth millions of dollars. And Ricardo never seemed to care about how much anything cost; he just bought what he wanted when he wanted. An entrepreneur usually had to be a bit more frugal and cost-conscious. But when Heaven suggested that they stack more money for a rainy day Rico balked. He told her that they had more money than they could ever spend in one lifetime and that the future held no fi nancial worries, but his cavalier attitude only made Heaven worry more. She was concerned that perhaps her husband had been tempted by the lure of the streets.

Heaven was sweet but she wasn't stupid. She'd seen more than her share of hustlers and dope boys growing up in the tough Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. And plenty of them had tried to win her affection but she wanted no part of that kind of life. She enjoyed glitz and glamour but was wise enough to know that material things could never be the measure of a man. And she believed that drugs were poison that were killing the masses and making the world a worse place while a select few profited. But Heaven knew that such temptations weren't always easy for a man to walk away from, and she shuddered at the mere thought that her husband could be involved in illegal activity and prayed that he wasn't so stupid or greedy. She'd been bold enough to confront Ricardo a time or two about her feelings, but he always had an explanation that made sense and Heaven had been raised to trust her husband. After all, if she couldn't trust him, what was the point of being married?

Heaven tried not to sweat her suspicions. After all, she was a child of God, and He would always look after her. And Heaven firmly believed that what was done in the dark would always come to light and the truth -- if it was anything other than what her husband told her -- would be revealed in due time. Heaven sighed as she prepared to begin her day. Flaws, worries, and all this is my life, Heaven said to herself.

Gloria Cruz sucked Ricardo's cock for what felt like an hour. Her jaw had a cramp and her mouth was becoming dry but that didn't curb her enthusiasm. Heaven Diaz was raised as a good Catholic girl who would grow up to be a dutiful wife. When Heaven married the man of her dreams Ricardo, she thought that all of her prayers had been answered. Heaven has all of the best material things that money can buy, but all she wants is more of her husband's time. Her world comes crashing down around her when she finds out the truth about where the money for her and her husband's lavish lifestyle is really coming from. To further confuse things, Heaven meets this mysterious new friend that leads her into a violent drug war overnight. Will Heaven make it out alive?

Heaven's Fury is an entertaining novel by Meta Smith. Smith crafted a classic tale of what happens when a woman marries the wrong man. This story gave readers an interesting glimpse into the Latino culture and how different attitudes toward men and relationships can affect every day life. Although this novel was chock full of non-stop drama, Heaven's actions in this story were so shocking that it came off as being rather unbelievable. All in all, Heaven's Fury is still a decent novel that is for anyone that is looking for a quick page-turner.

First time reading a book written by Meta Smith. I have to say I will have to add her to my authors list.

This was a great read, read this in less then one day.

At first while reading it I was wondering why is it called Heaven's Fury because I was totally waiting for Heaven to stop being naive about her husband.

Well Heaven is a church going woman and she is married to Rico who really isn't into the church thing but, he says he loves Heaven.

Heaven is so naive about her husband Rico cheating ways and about him not in the drug business.
Rico has another thang going on with a old girlfriend Gloria that loves him to death. She finds out she is pregnant by Rico thinking all will be good with her and Rico but, Rico had another thing for Gloria.
Gloria happens to run into Heaven at a store. She decided to talk to Heaven and get to be friendly with her so that Heaven can open up to her.

Rico has this man name Black from Gary Indiana that wants to take over Rico's drug business by all means.

Gloria wants reverge on losing her baby so she sets off to go find Black so that Black can kill Rico and Heaven.

At the end of the book is where all the FURY in Heaven finally broke loose. I was totally waiting for Heaven to come to her senses.

Overall book was great. :)

Voyeuristic

In an email, Amazon has asked me to share my opinion regarding BOBBY and JACKIE: A LOVE STORY. I can describe it using one adjective: voyeuristic. I gave it a two-star rating only because I didn't hate the book -- at least, that is, the seven chapters that I read. The inventory of testaments from this and that friend or acquaintance about surreptitious kisses and fondling read like a dime store romance novel. It all simply grew tedious and superfluous.

I bought the book not because I am fascinated by the Kennedys or actually care if RFK and Jackie O had an affair after the tragic murder of JFK, but I was curious about Heymann's references to Marilyn Monroe: there aren't that many. The one quotation attributed to her is not sourced and it doesn't appear in any of the credible biographies that I've read about Marilyn. Therefore, I discount it as a defense, as Heymann asserts, of her alleged affair with JFK. The alleged discussion between Hoover and an attorney named Clark Clifford regarding "a silent three-minute black-and-white film showing deceased actress Marilyn Monroe committing a sexual act upon a man whose face was just out of range of the camera" is humorous to say the least. The actual film is nearly thirteen minutes long, so I assume Hoover either had it edited or received an edited version from Hoffa. However, the man's face is clearly visible as the film begins. Whoever he is, he is clearly not RFK. The female participant's face is also clearly visible and she is not Marilyn Monroe, clearly. And trust me, the film was not shot in Marilyn's bedroom at 12305 Fifth Helena and it appears to have been taken with one of those very noisy hand-held 8mm cameras that were available in the 60s. Perhaps in 2009, Heymann didn't have access to Al Gore's amazing internet. Otherwise he could have viewed the full stag movie for himself.

Heymann is now dead, just like the persons he scandalized during his literary career. It is gauche to talk ill of the dead, those who can't respond or otherwise defend themselves against unscrupulous biographers, which apparently Heymann was. The general consensus is that he was a fabulist who never let the facts or the truth stand in the way of his story. In 2003, The Washington Post characterized Heymann's work as follows: "There are lies, damn lies and statistics … and autobiographies, biographies and books by C. David Heymann." The Post proclaimed that Heymann's books were "unfettered by live subjects." His biography about Barbara Hutton, due to inaccuracies, outright fabrications and an impending lawsuit, was recalled and pulped by Random House. Heymann was accused his entire career of dishonesty.

I don’t know if every word Heymann committed to paper regarding his assertion that RFK and Jackie O had an affair is truthful or dishonest; but there is no avoiding this: any person who takes C. David Heymann at his word is … well, foolish.

Heymann's work is simply not credible

My in-depth review of all of Heymann's work appears here: [...]. I strongly encourage you to read the whole thing. Otherwise, here's a quick summary of just this book.

Heymann's book is simply not credible. First of all - and let's clear this up before we begin - he is NOT a Pulitzer Prize "nominee." That term is reserved for people the Pulitzer Prize committee selected as finalists. Heymann was simply an entrant - meaning, his publisher submitted his book in the HOPE of getting a nomination. I verified this both by talking to his current editor and by talking to the Pulitzer Prize committee.

Suffice it to say if you believe what's in the book, stay away from real estate brokers, as you are clearly at a disadvantage. He provides footnotes for items that are not new, and doesn't footnote his more astonishing claims. Heymann relies heavily on his purported interview with a guy who died several years before Heymann started writing about the Kennedys. And some of the more sensational claims for that interview are, surprise, not in his earlier books on the Kennedys. Did he only just rediscover things you truly couldn't forget on first hearing?

All the people who he has making extraordinary claims regarding an affair between Jackie and Bobby are dead. How convenient. If that's not what they said, they are no longer alive and able to sue.

Now perhaps Heymann is being fed bad information by his researchers. He credits a number of them for this book. Maybe Heymann is the gullible dupe. But his researchers didn't list him as a three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee when he wasn't. That was Heymann's doing. I suspect most other "mistakes" are his alone, as well.

I've tried to use his other books for research before, but his footnoting wouldn't pass a History 101 course. He'll source the right book in some cases but the wrong page number, and when you finally find the relevant passage, you'll see he quoted this wrong. For that reason, I'm unable to use his books in any of my own research. It's not worth the time to try to figure out what he got right.

If you like novels and hate the Kennedys, then this may be the book for you. If you have a serious interest in history, however, this book will not help you. And woe to other authors who quote from his unsourced claims. They'll reveal themselves to be shoddy researchers in a field mined with plenty of disinformation already.

Pure crap

I barely got into this book before I set it aside. Having read "Five Presidents" and "The Kennedy Detail", the lack of scholarly research in this sorry excuse of a book was painfully obvious. It's nothing more than a compilation of rumors and trashy magazine conjectures. The Secret Service officers partying along with the president is such a load of crap - what's waste of my money!
