"Well, put chains on the damn tires!" Kim orderedthe car rental guy over the phone.

"Sorry, lady, the advisory is clear. Stay off the roads. Emergency vehicles only."

Shit! Nick would kill her if she wasn't in Evergreen by the end of the day. "Look, I have to be in Evergreen by this afternoon. How much do you want to make that happen?"

"Lady, 80 is closed. It'll be twenty-four hours before the plows will have it cleared, and that's if the snow stops right now. Taking 82 into Evergreen will be another two, maybe three, days. Nobody is going in there, and nobody is coming out."

She slammed down the phone and whipped back the heavy curtains of the window, blanching as bright light pierced her corneas. A whiteout glared back at her. Snow! It was freakin' everywhere! The blizzard of the decade was not supposed to hit for another twenty-four hours. She only needed an hour to get to Evergreen. Like a petulant child, Kimberly threw herself in a tantrum on the rumpled bed in her hotel room. "I don't want to be here!" she shrieked. And despite the immaturity of the action, it felt really good. She didn't let loose often, but when she did, it always made her feel better.

She smiled and warmed. Like last night.

Just as quickly as it erupted, her smile waned. Guilt assailed her, although it shouldn't have. It wasn't like she was officially engaged or that her soon-to-be intended gave two shits who the hell she slept with. Frustration gripped her, and the fact that she felt anger at Nick right now bothered her on several levels. She didn't love him. He didn't love her. Their impending nuptials were a business merger, pure and simple.

So why was she pissed?

She relaxed and settled more comfortably back into the sheets. Let's think this through, Kimberly. Just as you would an acquisition.

Last night had been an anomaly. Plain and simple. Not only from the one-night stand angle but also from the pure carnal indulgence of the encounter. Her skin warmed. Yes, last night had been a stress release she hadn't realized she'd needed. And for that value alone, it had been worth it. A girl couldn't buy that kind of de-stressor. And knowing her physical health was directly tied to her mental well-being, Kim had no regrets.

She closed her eyes and relaxed back into the thick, downy pillows. A long breath escaped her and she pressed her hand to her chest, the rapid thud of her heart belying her casual dismissal of the gravity of her late-night tryst.

What if she ran into that hunky stud she'd twisted up the sheets with last night? If she couldn't get out of Reno, neither could he. She twirled a long blond strand of hair between her right index finger and thumb. Heat spattered across her cheeks. If she looked in the mirror right now, she would see that her neck and chest were red and splotchy. She hated that. It was a dead giveaway that she was nervous or embarrassed, or, well, anything other than the hard-ass persona she had worked a lifetime to perfect. In her business, perception was everything. And despite her iron will to tamp it down, the heat continued to rise in her cheeks.

For crying out loud, it wasn't like she was a prude or anything, but, oh, good Lord, the things that man had done to her last night! And she didn't even know his name! She flung herself over and cradled her hands under her cheek. A slow, dreamy smile curved her lips. His spicy, masculine scent still lingered in her hair, on her clothes, and on her skin. She closed her eyes and inhaled him deep into her lungs. God, last night had been incredible.

She hadn't wanted to shower. It would wash away the last trace of him, and she wanted the subtle reminder of him for just a little longer. Her body thrummed. She wanted more than a reminder. She wanted him again. Hell, maybe she should go back up to his room and while away the hours....

Kim rolled over onto her back and squinted against the bright light of the snow streaming through her window. But she knew she wouldn't go upstairs. For a lot of reasons, the number one being he was the kind of guy who liked women too much. And she was the kind of woman who had been burned by his type one too many times.

Stupid, stupid, Kimberly. Always going for the men who gave women like her a token glance before they moved in on the supermodel type. Except this guy, last night. For reasons only known to him, he had paid no attention to the high-maintenance girls flitting around him like annoying gnats on a sweaty dog. Not that Kimberly didn't have high-maintenance fees -- she did, but she just never felt she could compete with those exotic sex-kitten types. She was more, well, basic. "A handsome natural attractiveness," Forbes had said when she'd been interviewed last year. "Not the kind to distract in the boardroom, but a solid beauty who would withstand the ravages of time." Great; she felt like a Chevy.

As one of the three "Women of Steel" Forbes had featured, she'd found the article a letdown. In her eyes it had screamed that she couldn't do anything right in her personal life, but watch the hell out when it came to acquisitions. She was Land's Edge's number one gun for hire, and she always landed her mark. Always.

Kim smiled despite dredging up painful reminders of why she was still single. Again. It didn't matter really, because last night, basic had trumped sexpot, and she had had the night of her life. Thanks to vodka-fortified bravery, she had been all too willing to follow that hot Latin stud up to his room, and there she'd discovered firsthand what all of the fuss was about. He was big, he was sexy, and he'd been the most passionate lover she had ever had the pleasure of slipping between the sheets with.

He'd made her feel things she had never felt before, including a natural orgasm. Multiple natural orgasms. Boy, she'd really been missing out.

When their gazes had caught and locked across the smoky lounge, time had stopped for her. Even from a distance she'd been able to see straight into his dark, soulful eyes. She'd felt like something had knocked into her chest, and it had scared the crap out of her. She'd quickly looked away and prayed he would go away. He hadn't. He'd approached her in the crowded bar and said she looked like she'd needed some company. She might have a knack for picking losers, but she wasn't naive. She'd rolled her eyes and turned away from him, giving him the classic brush-off. He'd persisted. His low, husky laughter had done things to her insides she'd tried to ignore. When he'd sat that tall hunky body of his down beside her and bought her a drink, she'd known she would have jumped through hoops right then and there had he asked her to.

Kim's lips tightened. Because the cold, ugly truth was that he'd nailed exactly how she'd been feeling at that exact moment. Talk about timing! She had needed some company. She'd cocooned herself away for so long in her work that she hardly remembered what it was like to feel attracted to a man.

Figures, the minute she lets her Stay-the-Hell-away-from-Me sign down, one swoops in for the kill. For crying out loud, did she have a Hit-on-Me-I'm-Lonely sticker on her forehead? Kim looked up at the ceiling. She was thirty-eight, divorced -- twice -- and didn't even own a cat. She owned a swank condo in the Hollywood hills, which, even four years after she closed, didn't have furniture except a bed and the requisite office furnishings. Her life was lived out of a suitcase. And hell if she could remember the last time she'd let a guy see her naked.

She grinned. But she'd hit the jackpot last night.

It hadn't taken long for him to touch her hand and give her that look. And it had taken her brain only a fraction of a millisecond to stand up and follow him up to his room. She had no regrets, except maybe she would have liked to have stayed longer. She didn't even know his name, and it didn't matter. Guys like him didn't remember girls like her, and she would be the better for it.

Such was her emotionally unencumbered life. And that was exactly how she wanted to keep it. Emotionally unencumbered. Speaking of emotionally unencumbered, Kim reached across the bed, dug her cell phone out of her black Chanel bag, and hit a button.

"Gold," a deep male voice answered. She scowled at the voice. It wasn't like he didn't have caller ID and know it was her.

"Hello, Nick, it's Kimberly."

"What do you have?"

Her scowl deepened. How was that for Hey, honey, how are you? It bothered her that all of a sudden Nick's aloofness bugged her. Theirs was a purely platonic relationship, but one that they both agreed would be better served united. A merger. Neat and clean -- just like an acquisition for them both. He didn't want kids, neither did she. He wanted to own the world, so did she, and they both knew that together, there would be no one or nothing that could stop them. They were, in Kim's mind, sharks of the highest order, and she didn't have a problem with that. She had long ago tired of getting her feelings hurt by picking the wrong men and diving headfirst into relationships that left her holding the bag. With Nick it was a corporate merger. She smiled. Yeah, she couldn't wait.

"Hello to you too."

"Kimberly, I've got a lot on my plate right now. Knock off the drama."

"Of course! I mean just because we're engaged, how silly of me to expect a smidge of emotion from you." She hated that she'd just said that. It showed weakness.

Kimberly Michaels can't remember the last time she got really down and dirty with a man. As a major ball buster in the corporate world, she is constantly busy and does not have time for a personal life. Craving the anonymity of a one night stand, Kimberly searches for a stranger at the hotel bar. Once she reels him in, they indulge themselves with each other all night long. As she sneaks away the next morning, Kimberly wishes she could stick around but she knows that relationships are not for her and almost mourns that she will never see him again. It is a good thing she didn't send a mourning wreath because she comes face to face with her mysterious lover after she arrives in Evergreen, the town she has been sent to scope out the details for a corporate takeover. Ricco Maza, the lover she never knew she wanted, is skeptical of her motives but he can't keep his hands off of her. What will he do when he finds out that she is going to be the one to close his town down?

Kimberly and Ricco's attraction to each other and the magnetism which drew them together is fiery and immediate. Their love scenes were hot and burned the pages of Have a Naughty Little Santa. But that is where their connection ended for me. I could never establish why they wanted the other to stick around except for the sexual aspect of their relationship. Both had been devastated by love before and didn't want to be hurt again and that was understandable. What wasn't understandable was the fact that their feelings caused this relationship to seem dirty and underhanded. I never felt that they truly loved each other until the very ending of Have a Naughty Little Santa and because of that, I just could not relate nor fully enjoy what I know others have raved about. Karin Tabke will remain an author of mine to buy - I just think the theme and characters influenced my judgment on Have a Naughty Little Santa.

Meaningful romance any time of the year

One all-night marathon of good, old-fashioned steamy and anonymous sex is just what Kimberly Michaels needs right now. She found just that in the arms of a hunky stranger at a hotel on her way to the small town of Evergreen, California. Leaving his hotel room without waking him, she never expected to lay eyes on her mysterious lover again.

When she comes face to face with him again soon after and discovers he has some pretty intimate ties with the very town she is there to spy on to gather ammunition for a corporate takeover, she is understandably unsettled. Ricco Maza seems to see right through her claims that she is simply in Evergreen for a vacation. Worse, she finds that close proximity to the handsome detective has her libido going into overdrive. Even more devastating is the effect this Lothario has on her heart, knowing that he will never commit to one woman.

Every now and then I read a book that makes me wonder why in the world it took me so long to find the author and galvanizes me into shopping for their entire backlist. That is what happened for me with Karin Tabke's HAVE YOURSELF A NAUGHTY LITTLE SANTA. What I expected from this book was a sweet and sexy little holiday themed tale. What I got was that and much more - a story that comes to life on the every page, tweaking the readers' emotions along with the characters and leaving you feeling that you've experienced the story yourself.

Both the hero and the heroine are people who have been emotionally damaged in their youth, leaving them with strong walls built around their hearts designed to keep them safe from that dangerous thing called love. Kimberly handles her fear of love by brokering a relationship for business purposes only; Ricco simply runs at the first sign of commitment altogether.

When these people meet, the attraction is instant and explosive. Good thing for them, too, else neither might have stuck with it long enough to find there was something much more real and lasting underneath all that passion. As they both realize how much they have come to love each other, each must heal the wounds of their past so they can come together in a healthy way for their happy ending.

HAVE YOURSELF A NAUGHTY LITTLE SANTA is a beautiful love story about two people who find the strength together to heal themselves.

Emily Black's mother left her and her father when Emily was only four months old. Even though she hasn't had her mother, she's had her mom's best friend Molly, Molly's daughter Reagen (who also happens to be Emily's best friend) and of course her father. Then there is punk rock, which seems to just run in Emily's blood. He mother claimed to have left to follow it, and it's what brought her parents together.

Now Emily's grown up and has a band of her own. Along with Reagen and Reagen's boyfriend Tom, She Laughs is born. While the band sky rockets, Emily secretly hopes that her punk rock music will bring her mother back to her. Even though life may seem great at times, Emily takes the wildest ride of her life with all the classic ups and downs of a crazy roller coaster.

This book was beyond spectacular. I was definitely expecting a great book, but nothing as utterly amazing as I was presented. Now I must first start with the characters. Emily was by far my favorite. I felt like I could really connect and relate to her, even though I'm not into sex, drugs and rock & roll, I still felt like we shared something! Her emotion seeped through every page and she was just so real. I cannot even imagine what it would be like not to have a mother and growing up without that ever lasting best friend. It was also really cool that we share the same birthday!! Stephanie Kuehnert also did a great job creating her supporting characters. Reagen, Tom and Emily's dad all had such life to them. They didn't feel like they just faded into the background like some characters tend to, they popped right out of the book. Then there's the time period. I loved how the book was set during the late `80s to late `90s, as it's something completely different. It suits the book perfectly. Finally, I must address Stephanie Kuehnert's writing style. I felt like she delivered the story point blank, but with enough detail to hold my interest. It is still hard to believe that this is her first novel, as it was one of the most poignant and incredible books I have ever read. I certainly hope that Ms. Kuehnert will continue writing as she definitely has an amazing talent! I highly recommend this book to everyone and anyone as it brings together the awesome world of music and reality to form a phenomenal story.

When Emily Black was just four months old her mother left her and her dad to follow punk rock. Now Emily is in High School and she is starting a punk rock band of her own with her best friend Regan. She sings and writes the songs with Regan, who is the drummer, and Tom the bass player. They finally get to play at River's Edge, the place where punk rock lovers hang out while watching small town bands rock the stage and also the same stage that Louisa, Emily's mom, saw Emily's dad play for the first time. Everyone loves her lyrics and sound but they don't know the real reason that is behind the word that Emily sings. She hopes that one day her mother will follow the music right back to her and her dad.

This was one cool book. I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone is probably on of the most down-to-earth books I have ever read. It isn't full of fairytales and other. Stephanie did a great job of making the book very realistic. The plot was also great, sometimes something would happen that I never suspected but then there were times when something would happen that I knew was going to happen. Which in some books I don't' like figuring out what is going to happen but I didn't mind it at all in this book. The characters in this book were stupendous; they all had their flaws, which is great because in life everyone has flaws. I also enjoyed how big of a part music plays in the story. Which is probably because I am a big fan of rock but I think every one who reads this book will be able to envision Emily rocking out on the stage, like I did. I also introduced to some great rock bands while reading the wonderful story. I recommend this book to every teen out there, especially if you like listening to rock bands. Also some adults might enjoy the story too.

I won a copy of this book in a blog giveaway contest. I'm subscribed to Ms. Kuehnert's blog as well (writerstephanie), so I'd heard about her book before it even came out. When it arrived, it was going to go on my TBR pile, but I kept looking at it and knew I had to read it. (It was also a break from all the paranormal/urban fantasy I had been reading as of late). So I picked it up, figuring I would start it and then read it when I got back from Chicago. Needless to say, about a chapter into it, I knew it was going into my bag for the trip.

Emily Black lives with her father in Carlisle, WI. She had heard for years about the legend of her mother, Louisa Black. Louisa left her infant daughter and husband to "follow the music." Emily began to follow in her mother's footsteps. She and her dad would talk about music every night after dinner. As Emily got older, she went to the local venue called River's Edge, where she got to hear up and coming bands. Eventually, Emily took an interest in creating her own music and along with her friend Regan, they created a band called She Laughs. The book revolves around Emily and her search for her mother and the music.

I honestly have to admit that I didn't know what to expect when I received this book. In some respects, it reminds me of an Oprah Book of the Month Club selection. I think it could easily make that list. But it is an excellent book. It brings home a teen's angst as she goes through life being raised by one parent and living in the shadow of the legend that her mother has become. I found the story gripping and moving, from Emily's first concert and throughout her success as a musician. You feel her emotions and the turmoil in her life. If you are a music person, then you can identify with the feelings brought out in the words of the songs in this book. One a scale of one to five, I give this book 4 1/2 stars. I think Ms Kuehnert does a great job of capturing the angst that Emily goes through and gives a compelling look into the punk rock scene.

I loved this book.
Ellen Goodman is smart, funny, wise, centered and totally in this world -- which makes her the perfect person to help us through the maze of modern life. If you already know and adore her column, this new collection will once again make you laugh and cry and nod your head in agreement. She understands us, and our world, and makes it all make sense.
If you don't know her columns, this is a perfect introduction to her very sensible take on everything from babies to bombs, from political candidates to sexual stimulants. I bet you'll feel exactly the way I did: that someone very close was sitting in my living room and talking just to me.
A must-read for everyone -- especially women.

Goodman's brilliant insights are as fresh and needed now as the day they were written. This collection of her columns provides a captivating review of the major events of the past years that makes it hard to put down before reading just one more column. The topics chosen recognize that events have changed us in the past decade, yet many fundamental questions concerning our country, our families and our lives remain "unanswered." These questions require the kind of careful, humourful reflection that Goodman offers.

The earth has angels all too few,

And heaven is overflowing.

Erin caught her breath. “What happened, Delores? Is he okay?”

“Here. He wants to talk to you. Jack? It’s Erin. She wants to talk to you.”

“Hello?”

The familiar voice filled Erin’s ear, sounding the same as always—a little gruff, a little sad. Erin released the air in her tightened chest. “Hey, Dad. Hi. How are you? Are you okay?”

“Fine. Fine, fine. How are you?” His words came out abrupt but with a slight slur.

“I’m good. But what about you? Delores said you had a stroke. Are you feeling better?”

“Yes!” He yelled into the phone so loud that Erin jumped.

“Okay. Well, that’s good. Can you tell me what happened?”

“It . . . I’m . . . it . . . the . . . aaa . . .”

“Dad?”

No reply.

“Dad?”

“What?” He shouted his response, and that frightened her even more.

“Dad, are you sure you’re okay? You’re not making sense.”

“Dad, let me talk to Delores.”

“Why?”

“I want to ask her a few things.”

“You hate her!”

Erin blinked and tried to form a sentence. She knew in her gut that something was really wrong. Her father had always been direct, but in the year and a half since he had married Delores, none of them had spoken the raw truth about how Erin and Delores viewed each other.

Erin tried to control her tone, but her voice wobbled. “No, Dad, I don’t hate Delores. I just need to talk to her for a minute.”

Sharlene stepped closer and placed her hand on Erin’s arm in a gesture of concern. Sharlene was the only friend to whom Erin had confided her feelings about her seventy-year-old father marrying a fifty-three-year-old woman he had known for only two months. To everyone other than Sharlene and Mike, Erin had defended her father’s decision, saying that perhaps Delores was just the person to bring back the sparkle that had faded from his baby blues since Erin’s mother had died.

Erin didn’t have the chance to watch for that returning sparkle because only a few days after her father surprised them all with the announcement that he had gotten married, he made a second stunning announcement. He and Delores were moving to a seaside cottage in a small coastal town in Oregon. Erin hadn’t seen her father since his abrupt move eighteen months ago and had talked to him only a handful of times.

“Erin? You wanted to talk to me?” Delores’s voice sounded as gruff as her father’s had.

“What are the doctors telling you? Is he okay? He doesn’t sound coherent.”

“He hasn’t seen a doctor yet. They’re backed up at the clinic. I told the admitting nurse that I think he’s had a stroke.”

“You’re at a clinic?”

“Jack wanted to come here. It’s a twenty-four-hour emergency clinic.”

Erin rubbed the back of her neck and paced the small space between the door into the kitchen and her car. “Delores, don’t you think he should be looked at by a doctor at a hospital and not just at a clinic?”

“That’s not what your father wants.” Delores’s words were firm. “He told me to bring him here.”

“But, Delores, he doesn’t seem to be communicating clearly. It sounds like he needs to be seen by a doctor at an emergency room.”

“I wasn’t calling to get your advice, Erin. I called because your father wanted to talk to you.”

Erin reeled at Delores’s snappy response. It took Erin only a moment to reply with equal verve. “He needs to get to a hospital. You need to take him to the hospital now.”

“He doesn’t want to go to a hospital, do you, Jack?”

Erin couldn’t hear any reply from her father in the background. Her heart was pounding wildly. “Delores?” Erin paused. What she was about to say made her feel sick to her stomach. “I’m coming up there.”

“Why would you do that? There’s no need for you to come.”

“I think there is a need. I’ll come as soon as I can. Please tell my dad that I’m coming to see him.”

Delores didn’t reply.

“Delores?”

“You don’t need to come, Erin. Are you trying to pressure me to take him to the hospital? Is that it? Is that why you think you need to come? Because I’m telling you right now the doctor at the hospital will say the same thing the doctor here is going to say. Your father has had a stroke, and he needs to go home and rest.”

Erin wanted to scream. She switched the phone to her other ear and with firm, authoritative words she said, “Delores, please take my father to the hospital. Now.”

Delores paused. “All right. Fine. I’m telling you now, it’s not going to make any difference. There’s nothing they can do for him.”

“Please call me as soon as you have any news from the hospital. You have my cell phone number, don’t you?”

“I have no idea.”

Erin gave Delores her cell number as well as Mike’s cell and asked her again to please call as soon as they had any further information.

When Erin hung up, her hands were shaking. Sharlene stood close by and asked, “You okay?”

“How can that woman be so uncaring? I don’t understand. My father sounded completely off balance, Shar. He is not okay.” Erin felt tears pool in her eyes. “I told her I was going up there. I don’t know what to do.”

Sharlene stretched her arm around Erin’s middle and gave her a comforting hug. “Why don’t you call Mike and let him know what’s going on? I’ll go to meet with our client. If you need to be with your dad, then that’s what you should do. I can take care of everything here. Don’t worry about any of the business details. Your dad is your priority right now.”

A surge of anger replaced the stunned concern Erin had felt during the call. She narrowed her eyes and felt her jaw clench. “I just don’t understand why she didn’t take him to the hospital right away. He never should have left Irvine. This is his home. If this had happened while he was here, he would be in much better shape right now.”

“Your father is a strong man,” Sharlene said. “If anyone can pull through this, he can.”

“You’re right, he is a strong man. Strong and determined. My father left Ireland when he was seventeen years old and put himself through college. He was the first teacher in the Irvine school district. Did I ever tell you that? This whole area was nothing but bean fields and strawberry fields when he and my mom moved here. The Irvine Ranch had one tiny school for all the farmworkers’ children, and my father was their teacher.”

“I never knew that.” Sharlene held open the kitchen door.

Erin walked back inside, her thoughts racing furiously. “My father taught for the Irvine school district for forty-seven years. Do you know anyone anywhere who has done that? Been a teacher for forty-seven years? And when he retired, there was nothing. No thank-you. No letter of appreciation. And look at Irvine now. Half a century after the bean fields, it’s nothing but rows of houses as far as you can see.”

Erin stopped by the kitchen counter. She felt her face burning as a molten topic overflowed from her erupting heart. “When my father left Irvine, he told me that after my mom died, there was nothing here for him anymore.” A tumble of tears choked her words. “Nothing here for him. Nothing at all. That’s what he said.”

Erin lowered her voice and added the final, painful truth. “But the thing is, I’m still here. And I’m not nothing.”

She let the tears fall. There it was: the soul wound that hadn’t healed in the eighteen months since his departure. Her father chose to marry a woman who was nothing like Erin’s mom, and then he moved a thousand miles away, preferring Delores’s company over the familiarity and proximity of Mike and Erin.

Sharlene reached for a paper towel next to the kitchen sink and offered it to Erin for her tumble of tears.

“I can’t believe I’m saying all this.”

“It’s okay. It’s better to get it all out now.”

“Shar, we promised we would take care of him. Mike and I promised that to my mother. So how are we supposed to do that when he’s so far away and his wife won’t even take him to the hospital?” Erin dabbed away her tears with a rounded edge of the rough paper towel and answered her own question. “I guess this is how we do it. I get on an airplane and go to him in Oregon.”

“You’re right. That’s what you should do.”

Erin blew her nose and drew in a wobbly breath. Gathering her thoughts, she said, “I need to call Mike.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Sharlene asked.

“I will be. Are you okay with meeting our client at Café Kate?”

“Yes, of course.” Sharlene gave Erin a side hug. “Call me if you need anything. I’ll be back in a little while.”

Over the next few hours Erin managed to book a four o’clock flight, pack a bag, and leave her supportive husband a love note on his bedroom pillow. Mike had immediately agreed with her assessment when she had called him. Even if her father was okay, which Mike said he doubted, he thought Erin should be there to help to decide if further steps needed to be taken.

Sharlene returned with a great report of her meeting with their first client and offered to drive Erin to the airport so Mike wouldn’t have to leave work to take her. By two thirty Sharlene and Erin were headed for John Wayne Airport. A light rain splattered against the windshield.

“Did you pack warm clothes?”

“Yes. I’m sure I overpacked. I don’t know how long I’ll be there. I hope only a few days. Call me if you need anything, anything at all.”

“I will. But don’t worry. I’m sure everything will be fine here.”

“This is the worst possible time for this to happen.”

“I know.”

Even though Erin understood that her reasoning was out of whack, she felt angry that the long-awaited day of the opening of their business had been hijacked by this emergency. She hated that she was thinking such a thing. It wasn’t her dad’s fault. Yet as much as she tried to adjust her feelings, her attempts to summon up gracious thoughts weren’t working. The anger she felt lingered through the check-in process and through security. She headed to her boarding gate with jaw-set determination.

Just as Erin’s flight boarded, her cell phone rang. It was Delores. She sounded much more amiable than she had that morning.

“We’re still at the hospital. You wanted me to call you as soon as I had an update. They ran some tests. Your father had an ischemic stroke.”

Erin wasn’t sure what that meant.

“The doctor said this could be an isolated incident or a prelude to more of the same. They weren’t able to see any more blood clots, but that doesn’t mean others aren’t hiding. The doctor did tell me that the best time to run the test is within three hours after the first symptom appears. He said it was good that we came in when we did. You were right about that, Erin.”

Delores’s small accolade acted like a tiny pin that poked a hole in the inflated anger Erin had been carrying with her. She could feel the fury dissipate with a hiss. “How is he feeling?”

“Better. He said he’s better and not to worry about him.”

“Delores, did you get my message? I called earlier and . . .”

“Yes, I listened to your message.”

“So you know that I’m coming up there.”

“Yes.”

“I’ll rent a car, and I made reservations at a hotel near the hospital.”

“You can cancel the hotel. Just stay at our place.”

“Are you sure?” Erin tried to evaluate Delores’s spurt of hospitality.

“Of course you can stay with us. Unless you would rather not.”

“No, that’s fine. Thanks for the invitation. Did they give you an idea of how long my dad would stay at the hospital?”

“The doctor is sending Jack home now. He put him on blood thinner and told him to go home and get some rest. I have a list of symptoms to watch for. Bad headaches, shortness of breath—”

“Delores, sorry to interrupt you, but my flight is boarding.”

“Do you know how to get to our place?”

“Yes, I’ve got it.”

“I’ll leave the floodlight on above the garage, so that should help you find us. Just remember it’s a gravel road from the highway to our place, so slow down as soon as you make the turn.”

“Okay. I’ll see you later tonight.” Erin found her seat, stowed her carry-on, and closed her eyes, hoping her seat companion wasn’t in a chatty mood.

She couldn’t quite figure out what to make of Delores’s responses. Was it fear that had made Delores so abrupt and aggressive in her earlier phone call? The news about Erin’s dad wasn’t good. He had experienced a stroke. But maybe all he needed was the medications the doctor had started him on. Maybe that would be enough to resolve the problems he had encountered.

Erin wondered if she had been too hasty in deciding to go to Oregon. No one had asked her to come. There wasn’t anything she could do. She really needed to be home, working with Sharlene.

The slow-burning, teeth-clenching anger she had felt earlier returned and seemed to be sitting on her lap in the narrow airplane seat. Earlier all the anger was focused on Delores and her father for marrying Delores and moving so far away. This time she didn’t know who to be mad at. Delores was as much at the mercy of her father’s condition as Erin was. She knew her father had the right to choose to live his life the way he wanted, and if he chose to marry Delores and move to Oregon, that was his decision. Erin shouldn’t disapprove of his behavior when what he wanted was to live his life this way. When it came to her anger over his having a stroke, Erin knew he obviously had no control over the rogue blood clots that had made their way to his brain stem.

Why am I so angry?

For a moment, Erin wanted to blame Mike for her angst. He could have talked her out of going. He could have told her to wait for the medical update. But he didn’t. He urged her to go right away.

In the end, Erin chose to blame herself. She was the one who had given way to her emotions. She had taken on the role of mother. Now that her own mother was gone, more than once Erin had fallen into trying to fix everything for everybody. She couldn’t fix this, not a stroke.

As the plane lifted off the runway, Erin remembered something her mother had written in her journal.

 

It’s not always about what I think it’s about. The older I get, the more convinced I am that God has a hidden objective tucked into every disagreeable situation I encounter. If only I would collect those sparkling gems of truth while I’m in the midst of each difficult relationship or experience, I’d leave this earth a wise and spiritually wealthy woman.

Erin reclined her seat. She felt lighter. That was often the way she felt when she drew a cool sip from the fount of her mother’s journals. The words her mother left behind were words from her heart, and they still touched Erin deeply.

Faith O’Riley had indeed left this earth a wise and spiritually wealthy woman. Erin could only hope the same would be said of her. Oh, how she wished her mother were here now.

A poignant, worthy read

Every so often, I read a novel that causes me to feel things incredibly deeply, submerging me into the pain and joy, trials and triumphs of the characters in a truly tangible way. Cottage by the Sea is one such novel, poignant, rich, reaching down into my soul and leaving me moved by the story contained within its pages. My heart both broke and rejoiced as I read Erin's story and watched her walk through a journey of discovery with her father, a journey that ultimately led to true healing for both. I think that this story especially spoke to me as I considered my own relationship as a father to my own daughters, and as I imagined how I am showing them my love and care. Am I making them feeling cared for and cherished? Are there things I could be doing differently so that when the end of my life draws near, we won't have to work through a closet full of regrets? Robin Jones Gunn has penned a well-crafted novel, one that not only mines the depths of the heart, but entertains as well, because I found that the story moved along at an excellent pace while also letting you savor the unfolding of the story.

I highly recommend this book for those readers seeking a worthy contemporary novel that will leave you feeling uplifted by the time you turn the last page. Be prepared to shed a tear! 5 out of 5 stars.

Let down

Let me start off by saying, I am a huge Gunn fan! I own about 20 of her books, buy more all the time, and have read almost all. For some reason I ended up skimming Cottage by the Sea. Gunn's magic just wan't there. Now to be honest, I am really a fan of Christy Miller and her friends, and as new books have been released ( the Katie Weldon Series, Love Finds you in Sunset Beach, Canary Island Song, and most recently, Cottage) I have been buying and reading them all to find out what happens with these characters. Since Cottage by the Sea promised to fill us in on what happens with Jordan and Sierra I was going crazy with anticipation. It was a huge let down. Gunn doesn't tell us anything at all about the wedding, and Sierra and Jordan aren't given any depth. This really upset me, and I wish they hadn't gotten married, because this highly anticipated event was completely brushed over! After going through both Christy and Tracy's marriage I was so excited to see Sierra's wedding! And it was a flop. Now, evaluting the book as a story, I also wasn't impressed. It was slow, dry, and boring. I couldn't get into it. This is the only Gunn novel i've ever disliked, and I hope that this is a one time mistake!

Beautiful Story

Erin's dream of opening her own wedding planning business, The Happiest Day, is finally coming true when her step-mother calls and says that her father has had a stroke. She drops everything to help her dad. Balancing taking care of her dad, planning her son's wedding, running a successful business, and doing all the other normal mom and wife things, Erin quickly becomes overwhelmed. As she tries to mend her relationship with her father and step-mother, other relationships in her life spin out of control. Will she be able to find her "happiest day" in spite of all the turmoil in her life?

I've been a fan of Robin Jones Gunn since I read the Christy Miller series in middle school. I think this may be my favorite "adult" book of hers that I've read, though! Cottage by the Sea is a poignant story about relationships, forgiveness, and redemption. I loved how Robin explored the special relationships between mothers and daughters and fathers and daughters. At times I could see glimpses of my relationship with my own parents through the story. Erin's relationship with her husband was special as well. It was refreshing to read about a husband who faithfully and sacrificially loved his wife through a very difficult time. All of the relationships (Erin and her son, Erin and her best friend, her father and step-mother, etc.) in this book were so rich and deep. As a result, each scene was filled with emotion.

While this was one of the more emotional books by Gunn that I've read, she didn't leave me "down" for long. Instead, I ended the book full of hope and satisfied by a beautiful story. Longtime readers will also enjoy surprise encounters with some old friends. I loved every aspect of this book and will be adding it to my "keeper" shelf. [5 stars]

Chapter 1

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Wednesday, 4:05 p.m.

Fiona Glass was trained to notice faces, but even if she hadn't been, she would have noticed this one.

The man watching her from across the crowded concourse was a study in contrasts, from his receding hairline to his youthful, ruddy cheeks. His hair was strawberry blond -- the same color as Fiona's -- and a smattering of freckles covered the bridge of his once-broken nose.

But it was his eyes that really captured her attention. They were brown and serious and fixed squarely on her.

Fiona halted outside the arrival gate, creating a pileup of deplaning passengers.

"Sorry," she muttered, tugging her black roll-on bag out of the flow of traffic.

"Miss Glass?"

She glanced into the eyes that had been boring a hole in her just moments before.

"Garrett Sullivan, FBI," he said.

A special agent. His charcoal suit and forgettable tie should have been her tip-off. Fiona draped her coat over her arm and hitched the strap of her attaché case onto her shoulder so she could shake the hand he'd offered.

"I didn't know someone was coming to meet me," she said, pulling her hand back. "I was planning to take a cab."

The side of his mouth ticked up. "Didn't want you to get lost."

"Aren't we going to the police station?"

"Change of plan." He commandeered her suitcase and led her into the river of people, creating a path for her in his wake. He wasn't tall -- probably five-nine -- but he was bulky in the way of an athlete who had let things slide.

"Any checked bags?" he asked over his shoulder.

"No."

He obviously wasn't going to fill her in yet, so Fiona simply followed him through the concourse. Glancing around at all the harried business travelers, she smoothed her French braid and adjusted her lapels. She didn't like suits, but she wouldn't dream of wearing anything else to a meeting with police and FBI agents, most of whom would be men. Those occasions called for drab, wrinkle-resistant clothes, which she kept in the carry-on bag that lived in her car. Today's gray suit was double-breasted and had the added advantage of concealing her figure. She looked tailored. Conservative. Professional.

She looked like Sullivan.

"We're going to the house," the agent finally explained. "The media wanted fresh sound bites for five o'clock, so there's a press conference scheduled at police headquarters in twenty minutes. Things are quiet at the residence now, and we thought it'd be a good time to get you out there."

"Okay." Fiona blew out a breath and mentally adjusted her expectations for the evening. She'd hoped to be thoroughly briefed on the case before she met with the child. She didn't want to go in unprepared. All she knew about this kid was that he was "highly traumatized," which could mean anything.

They passed the escalator leading down to ground transportation, and Fiona stopped. "Don't we -- ?"

"We're out here."

He led her to a roped-off area near a bank of metal detectors and X-ray machines. A line of passengers snaked back and forth, their boarding passes and IDs held out for inspection. A security guard gave Sullivan a crisp nod, then unclipped the nylon strap from the stand and waved them through. Less than a minute later, Fiona stood on the curb beside a white Ford Taurus that had been illegally parked in the passenger-drop-off lane. Sullivan waved at the orange-vested guard patrolling the sidewalk as he opened Fiona's door.

She slid into the car, discombobulated by the change of plan but grateful to be whisked away from the airport so efficiently. Fiona hated airports. They were inevitably bipolar -- filled with people either frantically stressed out or morbidly bored.

She fastened her seat belt and stowed her attaché and coat at her feet. The interior of the Taurus felt warm, meaning Sullivan couldn't have been waiting long inside the terminal. For some reason that came as a relief. Sullivan slammed her suitcase into the trunk and then opened the driver's-side door to admit a gust of chilly air. Georgia wasn't known for its bitter winters, but the entire South was in the midst of a cold snap. Even Austin was expecting snow tonight.

Fiona watched the agent settle in behind the wheel. She placed him at thirty-eight, maybe forty years old.

"Tell me about the case," she said.

He turned up the heater and pulled out into traffic.

"Shelby Sherwood. Age ten. Last seen by her brother Monday afternoon."

"And she was taken from her home?"

"Yep. Man came to the front door. Rang the bell, we think."

So far he was only repeating what Fiona already knew from CNN this morning. She typically avoided news broadcasts, but she'd been surfing for weather updates, and the story had caught her attention. At the time, she hadn't imagined that a few hours later she'd be abandoning her Survey of Western Art class to rush to the airport.

"Tell me about the witness," she said.

Sullivan twisted his body around to retrieve something from the backseat, all the while steering the car onto Interstate 85.

"Colter Sherwood. Age six. Was home from school watching Power Rangers in the living room when Shelby answered the door." He flipped through the file in his lap, taking his eyes off the road and making Fiona's heart palpitate. "First-grader at Green Meadows Elementary. Same school as his sister."

Sullivan unclipped something from the manila folder and passed it to Fiona. It was a color copy of Shelby's school photo, the one that had been all over the television this morning. Shelby's straight brown hair hung past her shoulders, and she wore a purple and pink striped T-shirt. The photograph made Fiona uneasy. Shelby's expression wasn't the carefree smile of a typical ten-year-old girl. Neither was it the sullen look you might expect from a middle-schooler. It was a tense smile, very self-conscious. Fiona studied the girl's tightly closed lips.

"She has braces?"

Sullivan glanced at her, startled. "How'd you know that?"

"You can tell from the picture. She's trying to hide them. What's with the makeup?"

His gaze shifted back to the road. "I noticed that, too. Not exactly age appropriate, huh?"

"For a fifth-grader? I wouldn't think so. Especially if her fifth grade is part of an elementary school like you said. You guys need to get a photograph of Shelby in braces circulating, pronto."

"We're working on it. Apparently Shelby hasn't smiled for the camera since the braces went on."

"How old is this picture?"

"September, I think."

Four months probably wouldn't make much difference in the girl's appearance, assuming she hadn't cut or dyed her hair recently. Still, they needed a photo with the braces.

A horn blared as Sullivan skated across two lanes of traffic. Fiona glanced over her shoulder.

"Are we late for something?"

"I'm trying to get you to the house while the media's distracted," he said. "No one knows you're here, and we'd like to keep it that way."

"That's going to be tricky when we release a sketch of the subject tonight."

"That's if we release a sketch. We're not sure the brother saw anything."

Fiona looked up from the photograph, surprised. "Then why am I here?"

"His beanbag chair was parked in front of the television, not fifteen feet from the front door, but he says he didn't see the guy."

"And why don't you believe him?"

"Because when the mother came home from work, the kid was distraught. Shelby was missing, and all he kept saying was, 'I didn't see him.' That's pretty much all he's said for the past two days. No one can get anything else out of him -- not his mom, not the cops, not the shrink we brought in. He's freaked out, so we're pretty sure he saw something. That's why we called you."

Fiona stared down at the school portrait and shook her head.

"What? You don't think you're up to it?"

She lifted her gaze, and Sullivan was smiling at her.

"Aw, come on," he said. "You're supposed to be magic with traumatized kids. It's all in your file. You're the rising star in forensic art."

Fiona pressed her lips together and looked away. "This is my last case. I'm retiring."

The car filled with silence as he digested this. She hoped he wouldn't press her on it. She didn't want to explain. All she wanted right now was to do her job and get back on a plane.

She glanced over. Sullivan was eyeing her with amused disbelief.

"You want to retire. You're what, thirty?"

"Twenty-nine."

He tipped his head back and laughed, and Fiona's spine stiffened. She didn't expect him to understand. But she didn't owe him an explanation.

"Who's home with Colter?" she asked, changing the subject.

His smile disappeared. "The mother and grandmother."

"And the dad?"

"Deceased. Drunk-driving accident about a year ago."

"Okay."

"Mom hasn't left the house since Monday night," he continued. "Doesn't want to be gone in case there's a call. She's convinced Shelby has her cell phone with her, although we haven't confirmed that."

"And is Mom a suspect?"

He cast her a sidelong glance. "Mom's always a suspect."

"You know what I mean. Any weird behavior? Boyfriends who don't check out?"

"So far, no. Everything we've got indicates a stranger abduction."

So Sullivan had leads he wasn't sharing. Fiona wasn't surprised. Her job was to provide information, both visual and otherwise, to investigators, but the information tended to flow one way. Most detectives she'd worked with operated on a need-to-know basis, and the artist didn't need to know anything not directly related to the drawing.

A muffled snippet of Vivaldi emanated from the pile near Fiona's feet. She dragged her case out from beneath her coat and rummaged around until she found her phone. The caller ID showed a Texas area code, the same one that had popped up on the screen three times today. It would be that detective again. He'd lef...

Griffin Writes Another Winner!

But as they work together, Fiona becomes more important to Jack than he ever imagined she could.~~~~~~~~~Thread of Fear is the first book I've ever read more than once. Yes, it is that good! The writing is tight, the story is explosive and the tension kept me turning pages long into the night. I had no choice. I had to find out what happened. Right from the start, Ms. Griffin's talent took me inside the story and gave me a front row seat to all the emotions Fiona and Jack experience while tracking the killer and fighting their attraction to each other. And I have to mention Fiona's sister, Courtney. Ms. Griffin created such a wonderfully complicated character in Courtney, I couldn't help liking her and I'm already looking forward to her story in Whisper of Warning. The next time you're in the bookstore, make sure to pick up Thread of Fear. I promise you won't be disappointed!

A GREAT suspense story.

Forensic artist Fiona Glass is very good at what she does and the stress of hearing the victim's stories has made her quit the business and focus her talent in her art. But Graingerville police chief Jack Bowman has convinced her to take on one last case. A case that has roots going back 10 years with a personal link back to Jack. Together Fiona and Jack will do their best to hunt a serial killer who's targeting teenage girls. But what seems like a simple assignment is fraught with complications, including a searing attraction to Jack that's tempting Fiona to let her guard down in potentially dangerous ways.

Thread of Fear was a great suspense book and recommended for all suspense fans. The ending was a complete surprise and the book was never predictable. My first love in reading were suspense books but as of late I've read less and less just because the stories have become so predictable but Griffin's story has brought me back. The pacing of the story is perfect. Nothing is given away too early and you're left anxiously reading the next chapter. The characters seem so real and I was able to connect with them making the story all the more real to me. Thread of Fear is book one in Griffin's new Glass sisters series and I am anxiously awaiting book two, Whisper of Warning. In addition I will be going back and reading her earlier books One Last Breath and One Wrong Step.

Gripping suspense with a bit of romance

Fiona Glass has tried hard to retire from her career as a forensic artist. Nearing emotional burnout from the job, she is determined to concentrate on her future as a commercial artist specializing in nature scenes.

But when tragedy strikes, Fiona can't find it in her heart to say no to a new case - especially when the man persuading her is the ruggedly handsome Jack Bowman. Jack is the kind of man who tempts her to break all of her rules, making him oh-so-dangerous.

Jack wants nothing more than to catch the serial killer who is stalking the women in his jurisdiction and will do whatever it takes to convince Fiona to take the job. Once he gets to know Fiona, however, his protective instincts kick in, and he'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe and in his life.

That's easier said than done now that the killer has set his sights on Fiona...

Readers who love a great mystery with plenty of suspense will want to pick up a copy of Laura Griffin's novel THREAD OF FEAR. This is the kind of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, turning the pages without cease until you reach the finale.

The suspense of the piece is definitely in the forefront, but the romance between Fiona and Jack is certainly there as well. Their love story provides a nice bit of light amidst the darkness of the criminal investigation.

Ms. Griffin delivers and intense storyline with plenty of oh-my-gosh moments that keep the reader guessing until the big reveal at the end. Along the way, we also experience some very emotional scenes with the story's lead characters and the key witnesses they work with.

THREAD OF FEAR is a gripping suspense story that will have readers eagerly anticipating the next book by the talented Laura Griffin!

Excellect Story

I thought that this was an excellent story, but I did have trouble keeping the names of some of the characters straight. I can't wait to read the second book that is coming out soon.

this is a great book I am not one who enjoys reading and this is the first book that i have willingly bought and i couldn't put it down its a great book and a great story the dialog can be a little difficult to understand at times but otherwise this is a mus read.

Good, but could have been better

A Darkness Forged in Fire is an above average fantasy debut by Chris Evans, a writer with a lively style. The novel is about Konowa, an outcast elf who must command green soldiers against an evil elf witch and her minions. Konowa is a complex, conflicted character who is torn between serving the empire, his soldiers, and his race. The novel shines when Konowa leads his regiment into battle. These graphic action scenes bring to mind Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series. I am also intrigued by the setting's racial and class politics and wish that Evans had focused more on them.

In this world, humans coexist with other races uneasily. Humans are the predominant race and seek to civilize the wilds populated by elves and elfkynan. The elves oppose this imperialism as it endangers the natural order. Many fantasies include tree-hugging elves, but I think that this book describes them and their stance better than others. Evans avoids generalizations. For example, not every elf is a nature lover, and the way one elf reveres nature may be different than another elf. He also hints at class differences: Visyna, an elfkynan aristocrat, looks down at the elfkynan fisher folk even though they respect nature as much as (or even more so) than she does. He also touches on religion, exemplified by the character of Inkermon, a religious fanatic. These nuances enrich the novel and make Konowa an interesting character, since he prefers steel and gunpowder over trees and magic.

Ultimately, I cannot praise A Darkness Forged in Fire too highly because I think Evans makes a glaring mistake: The novel's background is more provocative than the storyline. At the start, Konowa is exiled in the forest after being court-martialed as a traitor for murdering his superior. Am I the only reader who thinks that this past plot is more interesting than the current plot? In my opinion, Evans should have started the novel in the beginning, with Konowa's decision to join the Iron Elves. I want to know what happened in detail to make him turn his back on the elves. I want to know when and why he chose to kill the Viceroy. Furthermore, I want to know how and why the Viceroy betrayed the empire. To me, this is a more engaging storyline.

The novel contains two other missteps. First, I think that the villains are underutilized. The Shadow Witch seems to have a fascinating history and possibly justification for her actions, but Evans only suggests it. In addition, the Viceroy's subplot is too simple; I think that Evans should have explored his character arc more fully. Also, the Viceroy and the Prince are too one-dimensional as opponents. Evans should have fleshed them out more. Second, Evans glosses over the regiment's growth from a gang of misfits to a corps of soldiers. The Iron Elves become dependable too quickly. I think that Konowa should have had to address more conflict within the ranks. If they are the worst of the worst in the military, where are the deserters, rapists, and cowards?

I recommend A Darkness Forged in Fire with the reservation that it could have been better.
