In the Night of the Heat: A Tennyson Hardwick Novel, by Blair Underwood, Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes

Award-winning actor and author Blair Underwood joins forces with two amazing and award-winning authors Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes to deliver the second installation in the stunning and provocative Tennyson Hardwick novel In the Night of the Heat.

Threatened with death after acquittal for murder, football superstar T. D. Jackson asks struggling actor and former gigolo Tennyson Hardwick for protection. Tennyson has a reputation in Hollywood after solving the murder of rapper Afrodite, but politely turns Jackson down: His acting career is taking off with a new series, and he's trying to work out his personal life after a series of wrong turns.

But Tennyson's life is upturned when his seedy past catches up to him on the set of his TV series. Then T. D. Jackson is found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent suicide.

T.D.'s gorgeous cousin, Melanie, is sure the superstar was murdered, and Jackson's family offers Tennyson an irresistible fee to discover the truth. But prying into T. D. Jackson's death means answering the question that divided a nation and destroyed a film star and a football icon's life and career: Did T. D. Jackson kill his wife?

When the investigation takes an unexpected turn toward the governor's mansion and a long-forgotten football game in the segregated South of the 1960s, Tennyson uncovers secrets tearing at the heart of two dynasties and must rely on all of his assets -- his actor's heart, deadly hands, profiler's mind, and every other part of his body -- to keep from dying next.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2

My agent had just said the impossible -- words any actor would kill to hear. But before I could be sure my ears weren't fooling me, I saw the gun.

It was noon, and Sunset's West Hollywood sidewalks swarmed with cell phone-symbiote lunch zombies. When Len Shemin called, I was scouting a handsome oak desk at a secondhand furniture store's curbside, killing time before I had to get back on set. The dark-stained wood was bolstered by iron struts at the legs and base. It squatted on the sidewalk like a massive pirate chest, something that might have graced Andrew Carnegie's office back in 1900. I was wondering how it would look in my den when my phone buzzed.

"Ten?" Len said. "Just heard from Lynda Jewell's office. She and Ron want to meet you tomorrow. Right across the street from where CAA used to be, at the Peninsula."

Impossible, I thought, as someone brushed against me. Two wiry, tattooed arms in front of me looked like green snakes, and one of them lunged for a low-hanging waistband. The jerky movement made me freeze and forget I'd just heard my fortune told.

"Ten?" my agent said in my ear. My killer was right in front of me, not a step away. I knew at least four ways to stop him before he drew the weapon, but reflexes don't work when your brain is locked in emotional carbonite. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. It was the best day of my life, and I was about to die.

A freckled hand emerged from the back of his pants, pointed in a mock pistol's L shape. The gunslinger was a pimple-splotched kid, about fifteen, grinning at me like a fool. "I know you!" the gunslinger said.

But even after I realized the weapon was only in my head, my gut and the knot of muscles at the small of my back tensed when he squeezed the invisible trigger. A year after some very serious professionals had tried to plant me in the desert, I still expected someone to put a hole in my head one day. History never dies.

I couldn't smile for the kid. I gave him a wave I hoped was polite.

"Did you hear me?" Len mosquito-whined in my ear.

I stepped beneath the awning's shade to lean against the shop's white-brick wall. My father used to stop and lean against a wrought iron gate when we walked from the church parking lot to the sanctuary, when his heart didn't feel right. Sometimes you need to stop whatever you're doing to help your heart remember its job. The tattooed kid yammered to a Prius-load of college kids, pointing me out as evidence.

"Lynda Jewell?" I said. "Ron Jewell, too? Tomorrow?" Repeating the basic elements was like pinching myself to be sure I was awake. Anyone else? Stevie Spielberg would make it a Trifecta.

"A meet-and-greet at the bar. Five. What's your schedule?"

Meetings like that didn't happen to people like me. That kind of meeting was an anecdote an actor might recall on Letterman, or on Oprah. My schedule was wide fucking open.

"That's what I thought." Len's voice wavered. Len Shemin is glad when good things happen for me, which is more than most people can say about their blood relatives. "Her assistant's called twice already. We sent in your packet for Lenox Avenue, and that's her passion project. Ron's writing the screenplay, of course. Everyone's after it: Denzel. Will. Terence. Don." The Afrostocracy's single name club. He didn't have to say Washington, Smith, Howard, or Cheadle.

I didn't know I had a "packet," but Len's agency was trying to brand me since I got cast on Homeland. All those years, I'd had it backward: I had to get the work first, and then I'd get my agent's attention. I got a guest spot on Homeland after the exec producer saw me kickboxing at Gold's. He didn't know I was an actor; he just thought I looked like an FBI agent.

A guest spot ballooned to a regular gig with occasional dialogue. I was just a desk jockey or scenery in the training hall, but with three or four lines or a little stunt in every episode, it was my steadiest work in a decade. And I was a celebrity in the twentysomething set after a series of five commercials running on Cartoon Network and Comedy Central, where I was the pleasant face of Progress. "The future looks bright!" the ladies purred. Laugh if you want, but those ads sell a lot of Smartphones.

Month by month, I had enough money to pay my bills, even the surprises, and I was stashing a few dollars in a new category called "Savings." I hadn't realized how good I had it at the time, but that's why they call it hindsight.

Now, Lynda Jewell was calling. In Hollywood, there are only two women with the power to greenlight a movie -- to say Make it happen -- and Lynda Jewell at FilmQuest Studios is one of them. Her husband, Ron, is a two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter, which only adds to the shine. Maybe she'd said Hey, call that black guy from So-and-So, and her staff called the wrong brother. I was sure it must have happened before.

"Why me?"

"Fuck why. Lynda Jewell is a who. Just be on time."

On time? Hell, I would be two hours early. I'd eat peanuts and bring my Kindle. No traffic jam or hailstorm or other act of God or man was going to get in the way of my meeting with Lynda Jewell.

The tattoed gunslinger passed me again, still grinning. "Hey...Future looks bright!" he said. Three teenage girls joined his side, all Gothed up with no house to haunt. I flashed them The Smile, and they grinned, making "Hail, Hail" bows in a row.

Didn't I tell you I was a god in the late-night twentysomething world?

I was the face of the future.

Rush hour was the major disadvantage to steady work. With the sunset glaring into my eyes, I spent thirty minutes snailing Hollywood Hills's narrow cliffside roads before I reached 5450 Gleason. I was home.

As I drove up, Marcela Ruiz was smiling as she climbed down my coral steps past the cactus garden. Her latest diet had stripped off twenty pounds. Newfound confidence made her walk with a swing in her hips as if she had shed twenty years, too. When I first met her at my father's nursing home, I thought Marcela was plain, almost homely. But smiles focused Marcela's round face, bringing out her cheekbones and eyes. All along, she had been a pretty woman hidden behind her worries. I hadn't seen a sign of those worries in months.

"Buenas noches, Ten," she said, kissing both of my cheeks. "Captain Hardwick bet you'd be late for dinner, and I'm glad I finally won. He waits, you know."

"He does understand that I'm on a series now?" I raised my voice, hoping that Dad might hear me through the open doorway.

"Just glad you made it," she said. She cast a fond glance toward the doorway. "He's doing so good." She blinked rapidly, as if beating back tears.

I squeezed her shoulders. "Gracias a ti." Thanks to you.

Marcela shook her head and pointed skyward, blowing a kiss to God. I stared after her as she climbed into her white VW Rabbit and drove off after a last wave. I liked Marcela, but I still wasn't sure I trusted that smile.

Inside, Dad was in the kitchen. Homeland had paid for remodeling my counters: Now they were low enough for his wheelchair. When I was growing up, we were strictly a Banquet-chicken and macaroni- and-franks kind of house. Dad had always been good on the grill, but now he had a library of cookbooks, an elaborate spice rack, and nothing but time on his hands. In the months between the heart attack and the stroke, he'd taken up watching cooking shows on the Food Network.

By coincidence, the two Hardwick men knew our way around the kitchen more than most women do nowadays. If it weren't for cooking and the Raiders, I'm not sure if Dad and I would have had much to talk about. But it was still better than we'd done in years.

The muscles on Dad's forearm flexed when he pivoted his wheelchair toward me. I'd learned to see past Dad's chair to notice the things worth celebrating, like a sturdy muscle in motion. Dad was about to turn seventy-seven, but his face had filled out again, not caving in on itself. A year before, Captain Richard Hardwick (Ret.) had been practically paralyzed in his nursing-home bed, unable to sit up and feed himself, a slave to the bedpan. Now, Dad was wheeling himself through the house manually, insisting on the exercise. Rescued, as Marcela put it. Sometimes I wished Dad was living across the street instead of under my roof, but moving him in with me saved his life.

"Marcela in town for the holidays?" I said.

Dad's suspicious eyebrow shot up. "Why you ask?" He still hated the slight slur in his voice, but he could make himself understood when it mattered.

"Thinking about Thanksgiving."

Dad hacked at an onion with his knife. His hands were steadier than they'd been in a long time, but I still felt nervous when he picked up the cutlery. "You askin' her to work on Thanksgiving?"

"Just wondered if she'd be around."

I also wondered how long I was supposed to pretend Marcela was still only Dad's nurse, and how long she would call him "Captain Hardwick" around me instead of whatever pet names she used during their hours alone. If the secret was on my account, I wanted to tell him to forget it. My mother died when I was only ten months old, and I didn't feel any need to guard her place in his heart.

However, Dad being Dad, I occasionally struggled not to imagine their intimate time together. Too Much Information. I just hoped I wouldn't have to lie one day when Dad asked me what I thought about Marcela, who was twenty-six years his junior. In the nursing home's sea of piss and apathy, Marcela had seemed like a godsend -- now, there was an uncharitable voice in my head that questioned the motivations of a younger woman apparently attracted to an elderly man. Dad didn't have many resources other than his pension and insurance policy. Could that be more attractive than his heart and mind? Snakes hissed and coiled behind that mental door, along with a self flagellating jealousy: You just want him all to yourself.

At least I'd been smart enough to say nothing. Dad and I were just getting to know each other, and there...

You will be blown away by ths book!!!
By Christina Northern
If you like Casengra you are going to love In the heat of the night. It has twists and turns that you don't even see coming. When I got to the last chapter, the bomb was dropped on me and I had not seen this fork in the road. These writers are really holding my attention and making it difficult to get anything else done. The ending was not what I thought was going to happen and am reading the book again to figure out where I missed the turn.

The book ends in a way that lets you know that another one is coming. I can hardly wait. You will enjoy this read.

Better (if possible) than the Casanegra
By Scott Masterton
Tennyson Hardwick is a great character.

"In the Night of the Heat" takes off where "Casanegra" left off. Things are going well for Hardwick. He's got a small continuing part on a hit TV series and is in love (maybe for the first time in his life) with his girlfriend April. All is good until he turns down the sexual advances of woman that is definitely a big player in Hollywood. Suddenly Tennyson is out of work, his girlfriend is taking a teaching position in Africa and his unofficially adopted "daughter" Chela has started up an e-mail relationship with a pedophile. When $5000 is set in front of him by the father of former football great and recent suicide T.D. Jackson, Hardwick leaps at the chance to investigate the death.

Jackson recently acquitted of the violent murders of his ex-wife and her fiancé was facing the civil portion of his trial and things weren't looking good; his suicide seems open and shut, but is it really? The character of T.D. Jackson is so obviously a thinly disguised doppelganger of O.J. Simpson that it makes for real fun and effortlessly pulls the reader into the story. Hardwick is in for a rough time and the death of the football star and apparent murderer is a maze of twisting corridors leading back to another football game many years before Jackson's birth.

I've read all of husband and wife team Steven Barnes and Tannanarive Due's stand alone novels and while I see a little of their continuing themes within the novel, I can't for the life of me see where one writer begins and the other finishes. Their styles are seamlessly woven together which makes for a great read.

If you like hardboiled detective novels in the Robert B. Parker or John D. McDonald genre or if you just like your romance raw and steamy, you'll love "In the Night of the Heat".

Ez's Review
By Esrenee C. Walker
I loved the continuation of the story line, but the ending should have had more depth. I just felt this sequel was rushed. I would like to see Tennyson Hardwick using his prowness in stickier situations. Good read though!

Tennyson Hardwick Gets Better and Better!
By musicalsoul
Blair Underwood, Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due are back with their exciting second installment of the Tennyson Hardwick series. If you thought the first book, CASENGRA, was hot with many twist and turns, then put your seat belts on for IN THE NIGHT OF THE HEAT. This one is filled with steamy action and so many twist and turns that you won't even know what hit you. Tennyson Hardwick sets out to find the killer of famous athlete, T.D. Jackson, and during his investigation he comes in the face of danger himself. Will he dig things back up that should remain buried in the past? Will his quest to find the truth cause him to lose his own life and endanger his family's life as well? I guarantee you that you will not be able to put this book down.

These three, Due, Underwood and Barnes are the best murder mystery writing team of our time. I have a feeling they are just getting started. Once again, buckle up for the adventurous ride!

Excitement & Suspense Rule
By Shelia D. Harvey
Ten is back, and his return is even better than his very good debut in Casanegra. This time around Ten is investigating the death of an O.J. Simpson type, who before his untimely demise, may have offed his ex and her fiancee. Juicy. Juicy. Anyway, Ten's dad, a wheel-chair bound, stroke-impaired ex-cop, rolls in to help his son. This story line is perfect, far superior to the pages of exhausting, unfulfilling sex that held Casanegra back. The characters are fully drawn and intriguing. The story is tight and sooo satisfying. A must read. Aww Sookie Sookie: Omar's Revenge

Pretty Good. Some Parts Unbelievable
By Vicky Vale
The character in this book, Tennyson, is half believable and somewhat far-fetched. His ability as a detective is interesting fodder. The story line in this book is also good, although reminiscent of O.J. Simpson. His past life and his live-in ward -- I don't like those two parts of the character. I think he should def get rid of the ward for the next story. It's just not right and if it continues, it's uncomfortable. Overall, the book is a solid read. The ending is a little weird and unexpected, but still good.

From Publishers Weekly
In January 2008, acclaimed oenophile and wine writer Taber set out in search of Bacchus—the Roman god of wine and theater—by exploring wine tourism in 12 of the world's most important wine regions. For the next six months, he visited wineries in familiar locales—Napa Valley, Calif., and Bordeaux, France—and not-so-familiar places, such as Central Otago, New Zealand, and Kakheti, in the country of Georgia. Taber weaves the history of a winemaking region with the history of various wineries in the place. For example, after chronicling all the challenges that the South African wine industry has faced since the 1950s (although the first winery there, Constantia, dates to 1699), he points out that the heart of South African wine tourism is the region around Stellenbosch and the best example is Vergelegen, a 7,413-acre estate producing outstanding wines that compete in quality with any in the world. In Georgia, Taber discovers numerous wineries, including Teliani Valley, which has won awards at the London International Wine Fair and other competitions, and observes sadly that the present state of Russian-Georgian relations has prevented the Georgian wine industry from flourishing and getting the international recognition it deserves. In a valuable appendix, Taber lists five wines from each region, and their prices, for those armchair travelers who cannot follow in his peripatetic footsteps and visit each region themselves. (Oct.)

Review
"With In Search of Bacchus, George Taber proves that what makes great wines also makes for a great story, as he transports us to the world's best wine regions and introduces us to the fascinating people who make the wine. My only complaint is he didn't invite me along on his journey." -- Miljenko "Mike" Grgich, Grgich Hills Estate

"Once again, with his third book, George Taber demonstrates why he is our premier author on the subject of wine." -- Gary Vaynerchuk, host of Wine Library TV

"In Search of Bacchus gives the historical foundation for each featured region, personal encounters with its pioneers, and intoxicating descriptions of what readers may expect during their own journeys there. I'm now planning trips to these destinations, and looking through my cellar for a bottle to sip while I plan." -- Constance McDerby, founder of Houston Wine & Food Week

Well researched, well written, a great read if you love wine
By David A. Garrett
When George Taber came to visit us in Mendoza while researching this book, we weren't sure what to expect. Lots of journalists and writers had come through looking for the big story of the "New Napa," and most had gone away with only a small part of it. What impressed us about George and his approach to research was the great number of people he talked to from every nook and cranny of the wine community, and the seemingly boundless breadth of his questions and interests.

Now that I have had a chance to read the book (delivered on my Kindle even in Argentina), I see that he applied the same thoroughness to every wine region he visited. I think the format of telling the story of the region, mixed with the personal histories of some of the interesting people who help define the region, all used as backdrop to bring the reader along with the author's personal journey - is exactly the right mix to tackle the sometimes impregnable world of wine.

I have spent a lot of time in a lot of wine regions around the world in the last 5 years. The portrayals of the places I know well are spot on, and now there are several I want to know better. I would hazard a guess that readers will wind up a little envious of George's journey by the end of this book.

Enjoy!

Armchair wine tourism plus a great source of travel ideas
By A. W. Tamarelli
This book by a very knowledgeable author is a chance to experience many interesting wine regions from our armchairs. Very few people will have the chance to visit all those areas. Yet after reading "In Search of Bacchus" you get a feeling that you know each area. It is also a great source of travel ideas for those who are fortunate enough to be able to explore the world of wine in person. Highly recommended.

For wine lovers and wine travelers!
By David A. Chambers
Disclaimer - I'm a fan of George Taber's books, which are invariably well researched and precisely written. The only reason I didn't grant a full five stars to this, his latest effort, is because Taber writes about one of life's great pleasures with a rather dry detachment! In his defense, his objective journalistic style was honed over years of reporting far more serious topics around the globe (including the only journalist to cover the famed Paris Tasting in 1976) - a writer from the days when journalism was a higher art than it is today.

But I did enjoy "In Search of Bacchus" for Taber's notes on his wine tours. I've even used his text to discuss future travel plans with my wife, which led to rearranged travel priorities based on his experiences. Of course, Taber only reports on a small handful of wineries in each area - without much description of how they were selected. Being familiar with some of the areas he covers, I wouldn't choose to write about the same wineries he did. But this does not matter in the least, to my way of thinking, as he captures the area's gestalt by describing significant history and essential personalities.

An effective book for wine lovers seeking to expand their knowledge of the world's key areas. Equally effective for those interested in selecting their next area for travel.

Cheers,
Dave the Wine Merchant

Great Addition to Indiana Lore
By F. Nava
What an inventive product - a "journal" exploring the many adventures of Indiana Jones ranging from childhood ("Young Indiana Jones Chronicles") through the movies (ending with the recent "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull").

The journal was written by Indiana himself, containing many pictures, drawings, and notes on his exploits. (It is reminiscent of Henry Sr.'s Grail Diary in "The Last Crusade.) It goes chronologically through the series and was apparently "found" by the Russians. They provide many annotations, linking and explaining the details of certain entries, pictures, characters, and notes.

This is a GREAT companion piece to the films. It is a little pricey for its contents, so I recommend looking around for cheaper price tags before purchasing it. If you can't find it cheaper, GET IT ANYWAY!

I actually found my copy on Amazon. It came at the sales price of $5 because it contained a publisher's mark - which was only a black marker line above the pages on the top of the book. A minor detail, because the book was still new and was $20 off the original price of $25.

If you want to collect essential Indiana Jones memorabilia, then this is a must. If you are a passing fan, then it is still recommended because it has countless details for the average fan.

Great for the Indiana Jones fan
By MoserGray
If you are a fan of Indiana Jones, you need to own this book, it's as simple as that. Chock full of neat little nods to the films, it is written as if it is actually a journal that Indiana Jones kept on his adventures.

Awesome
By MommaK
My 7 year old LOVES Indiana Jones. We got him this for his birthday. He uses it on his "adventures". This book really helps to encourage reading in a fun way. It's set up just like a scrapbook/journal with drawings & pictures and little bits of information. He's even drawn his own treasure maps. Nice for any fan young or old.

Dr. Ron Taffel, one of the country's most sought-after child-rearing experts, draws on decades of counseling experience and extensive conversations with parents nationwide to offer an original and inspiring analysis of the distinctive challenges parents face in raising children today.

Dr. Ron Taffel, one of the country's most sought-after child-rearing experts, draws on decades of counseling experience and extensive conversations with parents nationwide to offer an original and inspiring analysis of the distinctive challenges parents face in raising children today. He also introduces a breakthrough approach for guiding kids—from children to teens—in ways that bring out the best in both kids and parents in these twenty-first-century times.

With warmth and clarity, Taffel, who is himself a parent struggling with these issues, helps us to understand our sons and daughters in an entirely new way: as a distinctive “free-est” generation, born to the first generation of “post-baby boomer” parents and the products of a decades-long cultural sea change that intensified in the nineties.

As a result, kids of all ages are now a bundle of contradictions: they exude entitlement, back talk shockingly, negotiate endlessly, worship celebrity, do ten things at once, conduct independent lives online, and engage in high-risk behavior at younger ages. Yet, they are also far more open with their parents and each other than kids in prior generations, are strikingly generous and empathetic, and care deeply about ethical issues. In addition, their high-speed multitasking is preparing them for the demands of the future.

The key question, then, is how to encourage the good while steering them away from the bad. Taffel believes today's parents, having lived through the beginning phases of the same social changes, are uniquely qualified to bring out kids' best—and he shows you how.

Using a wealth of examples, he walks parents through innovative methods to get children's and teens' attention, to set limits they will respect, and to engage them in meaningful conversation to provide the guidance they need. He also instructs on how to rebuild supportive community around us. His inspiring analysis and expert guidance will be embraced as the authoritative new approach to raising their kids that parents have been searching for.

A Must Read!!
By Sharon Ruth Cohen
This is a thoughtful and though provoking, well written book to reference and read more than once. I have been in education for more than 40 years and currently am an active grandmother. It provides me with a clear understanding in the generational differences and how the lenses of our young ones are vastly different from adults. It is a must read for teachers, parents and yes, even grandparents!!

Childhood Unbound

Childhood Unbound: Saving Our Kids' Best Selves--Confident Parenting in a World of Change

With clarity, precision and concise prose, Ron Taffel has provided tools to parents so they can deal with various problems in raising considerate and honest children in this (paradoxical) very private and very public internet based world in which we find ourselves.

Each child is different but they all have to deal in a fast paced world in which both parents and children are over scheduled and under a lot of pressure. We learn that the goal is not to remake your child because you cannot, but to have your child understand how to deal with the conflicts they face in day to day living and growing up.

Devils in Exile: A Novel, by Chuck Hogan

With Prince of Thieves soon to be a movie under the title The Town starring Ben Affleck and Mad Men ’s Jon Hamm, and Hogan’s recent vampire novel The Strain, coauthored with Guillermo del Toro, an instant New York Times bestseller, Chuck Hogan is a star on the rise. Now, with Devils in Exile, he displays his trademark gift for pulse-pounding action and strong characterization in a gripping drama that is sure to further raise his profile and give him the audience he so richly deserves.

When Neal Maven and a crew of fellow Iraq War veterans begin ripping off Boston-area drug dealers for profit, their lives are quickly put into jeopardy. As Maven’s involvement deepens, two worrisome things happen: he begins to suspect that their leader has a sinister ulterior motive, and he lusts after the leader’s girl—a tough former model with a drug problem. As the rip-off jobs get riskier, Maven and his crew are soon pursued by both a smart federal DEA agent and by a pair of psychopathic Jamaican hit men on a drug lords’ payroll. When everything goes bad—and it goes very bad—Maven embarks on a one-man crusade to right the wrongs in which he unwittingly participated. Not everyone will survive his crusade, and Maven himself may not live to see the final outcome….

Vividly told and featuring a stunningly complex plot, Devils in Exile is Chuck Hogan’s most satisfying and powerful thriller yet.

From Publishers Weekly
In this fast-paced crime thriller from bestseller Hogan (The Strain with Guillermo del Toro), Iraq war veteran Neal Maven faces a series of dead-end jobs and little in the way of hope for the future back in his hometown of Boston. Then he catches a glimpse of his old high school heartthrob, Danielle Vetti, and his life is changed forever. Shortly after this sighting, Neal fights off a robbery attempt, an attack witnessed by Danielle's boyfriend, who decides to hire Neal to join his gang of Iraq war vets in their enterprise of ripping off drug dealers. Neal has morals, but he decides because they're doing good, i.e., destroying drugs and hurting drug dealers, this is an honorable career move. Things go well for a while, but after Neal starts sleeping with Danielle, the whole deal starts to unravel, with explosive results. This is a compelling portrait of a good man who makes bad choices and in the end must battle his way out of a destructive and deadly life. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Hogan, rapidly becoming a major player in the thriller genre, turns in another winning performance. Neal Maven is a Iraq War veteran, struggling to make ends meet as a civilian in Boston. When some other vets toss him a potentially lucrative job offer, which involves knocking over drug dealers, Neal joins their crew; but soon something happens to make him realize that he’s wandered too far into the dark life. There’s only one road to redemption: to turn himself around, he must fix the mistakes he’s made. But can he do so and stay alive? The author’s earlier thrillers, including The Blood Artists (1998) and Prince of Thieves (2004), showed that he was capable of constructing pulse-pounding stories that involved readers in his characters (this is also true of his recent The Strain, 2009, a modern-age vampire novel written with director Guillermo del Toro). This one is a fine addition to his résumé and a definite crowd-pleaser. --David Pitt

Best Book of the Year
By Amazon Customer
I discovered Hogan's books by accident a few years ago and I am glad I did. Each novel has been a great read and Devils in Exile continued the trend.

I was unable to put the book down. This was one of those rare novels that I was compelled to read in one sitting. Lucky today was a 'snow day' in New York.

The story is faced paced and gained momentum with each chapter. Too often the story based upon the troubled hero turns into a cliche, Hogan to his credit, did not take the easy way out. Unlike many novels, the ending did the story justice.

If you have never read Chuck Hogan, start now and read them all.

Advocating "Devils"
By Keith Thomson
Green Beret Neal Maven is the ultimate warrior, with comparable smarts and a dry wit. Tragically, when he returns home to Boston from the War in Iraq, society has little use for him. As author Chuck Hogan puts it: People see not a battle-tested hero but a potential Travis Bickle. When they say, "Great to have you back," what they really mean is, "Now please go away again."

The best work Maven can find is parking cars. At nights. Supplemented by shifts at a minor-league convenience store. On the whole, despite his considerable skills, there's no place for him.

Until he meets a dynamic group of fellow veterans who use military tactics to intercept major narcotics deals. They keep the cash and--doing Robin Hood one better--destroy the drugs. The DEA regards them only as hoods, however. And the drug dealers they've left empty-handed would like to kill them, for starters.

Thus Hogan launches Maven and readers onto a suspenseful, breakneck ride with as many twists as can be found in the thriller genre--or anywhere.

Equally remarkable are the original and multi-dimensional characters, a vivid Boston backdrop, and prose laced with wry humor and crafted so artfully (though without a single superfluous syllable) as to put you right smack in the action--you will practically feel the bullets tearing apart the air all around you.

Top notch....
By BJ
"Devils In Exile" is the real deal, a top notch thriller / crime drama that is realistic, current & gripping!

I first discovered Chuck Hogan after reading his last novel The Strain, co-written with movie producer Guillermo Del Toro. After finding out Chuck Hogan has alot of other very well written books - Prince of Thieves, The Killing Moon, I couldn't wait to read more from him. Then just last month I see he has a new novel coming out and I couldn't resist reading it.

Great characters, great dialogue, great action with realistic but still exciting scenes & a not your usual "all is well" ending!

Main character Neal Maven is freshly back from his tour in Iraq. Unfortunately those skills that kept you alive & made you special there, don't generally work in your favor here. Maven's working lackluster jobs until he meets smooth talking Brad Royce. Royce has a group of fellow veterans working for him and he wants Maven to join. They rob drug dealers of their money & they flush their drugs. Maven joins up, but it isn't long until he starts asking himself, where does Brad Royce get his inside information. Throw in a nosy DEA agent, innocent bystanders and two Jamaicans hell bent on killing and you've got a great read!

I was especially impressed with Hogan's (Tomorrow Man) theory that Brad Royce uses to get Maven into the group!

I hope to see more of Neal Maven and I think Chuck Hogan plans to deliver on that.

Hogan's book "Prince of Thieves" is currently being made into a movie called "The Town"!

If you've read Beat the Reaper: A Novel and enjoyed it as much as me, do yourself a favor and read "Devils in Exile", you will not be disappointed!

Enjoy~

#1 New York Times bestselling thriller master Sandra Brown “charges her characters and their relationships with electricity” (San Francisco Book Review) in this sizzling, sleep-with-the-lights-on novel of suspense.

When a deranged stalker attempts to murder her daughter Berry, Caroline King has no doubts who to contact for help: Berry’s father, the cagey private investigator Dodge Hanley. It’s been thirty years since Dodge last saw Caroline, but the savvy real estate mogul still haunts his dreams. He has a whole bagful of grudging excuses for ignoring Caroline’s call—and one compelling reason to drop everything and fly down to Texas to protect the daughter he’s never met: guilt. As always, Dodge’s perseverance knows no bounds as he teams with a small-town sheriff, but the alarming situation worsens when the stalker claims other victims, leaving a trail of clues lethally pointing toward Berry. And Dodge—a street-smart fighter who has always put his life on the line—realizes that this time, he’s risking his heart as well...

From Booklist
Brown’s latest thriller reintroduces a character from her previous outing, Smash Cut (2009): Dodge Hanley, a grizzled investigator who used to be a cop. Dodge is awakened one morning by a call from Caroline King, a woman he hasn’t seen in 30 years—since the day their daughter, Berry, was born. Now Berry is the target of a frightening stalker who has just broken into Caroline’s house and shot Berry’s coworker, Ben Lofland. Dodge reluctantly agrees to travel from Atlanta to Texas to help the police hunt down Berry’s tormentor, the vengeful Oren Starks. The police deputy on the case, Ski Nyland, is suspicious of Berry and convinced she is hiding something. As Dodge works with Ski to track Oren, his feelings for Caroline resurface, and he recalls how they first met—and the reason their torrid relationship came to an end. Though a late-in-the-game twist seems somewhat farfetched, the draw here is the appealing Dodge, a character Brown fans will have no problem rooting for. --Kristine Huntley

Sandra Brown is still awesome!
By 4everBOOKS
Tough talking, chain smoking Atlanta Investigator Dodge Hanley (from Smash Cut: A Novel) receives a late night phone call from the love of his life Caroline King who lives in Texas. Dodge has not seen Caroline in 30 years and now their daughter, Berry, is being stalked by a former co-worker who wants her dead. He immediately returns to Texas. Sheriff Deputy and Afghanistan war veteran Ski Nyland, who is the local investigator on the case, is immediately attracted to Berry. Ski will do anything to keep her safe, but is suspicious of her story. Does she hold secrets that may have provoked her stalker turned killer? I really didn't care. The search for Berry's stalker isn't that exciting and didn't contain any mystery or suspense for me.

Thankfully Brown intermittently flashes back to 1978 to tell the love story of young police officer Dodge Hanley and aspiring realtor Caroline King. The flashbacks were the best part of Tough Customer -- how dramatically they met, how passionately they fell in love, how tragically they split apart, how remarkably differently their lives turned out, and most importantly of all, how enduring their love was.

For me, this was not a story about a murderous stalker, but a story about setting bad decisions right and having hope for second chances.

I hate to say it, but this book was terrible. I almost couldn't get through it, and for me that's rare, especially for a Sandra Brown book. It was so difficult to read, that it took me weeks rather than days to work my way through to the last page.

The characters were flat and uninteresting. I felt like I didn't know who they were at all. You barely even got a feel for what they looked like, so it was hard to get lost in the story. I felt like I was being forced to study for a test rather than reading a novel for enjoyment.

The only saving grace for this story were the few glimpses of Dodge and Caroline's relationship from the 70's. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of their story to actually make this a good book.

Her books haven't been the same since changing publishers, but they still felt like Sandra Brown books. Not so with this one. It felt like a young Literature student wrote this book, not my once favorite author. Save your money, borrow this from the library if you feel like giving it a try.

Terrible, unoriginal, cliched ending.
By Annette Rodig
"Tough Customer" is not one of Brown's finest creative productions. Is there a point that every author arrives at where they look to cliché, overused endings as their own? I was bitterly disappointed with her ending. I felt cheated and Brown honestly insulted my intelligence. As part of the reading audience, shouldn't we be given the chance to solve the mystery with hints that the writer drops throughout the book? As far as I can recall, Brown didn't give the reader any such chance to figure out the ending.

What kept "Tough Customer" from bombing completely was the story behind Dodge and Caroline. It gave the book its only pulse. There was more action going on in the flashbacks then there were during the entire novel. Throughout the story I became more and more exasperated with Berry, who kept back a plethora of details from the police and made her less credible throughout the novel.

I'm very disappointed in this book, as I am an avid Brown fan. This was not one of her best - but personally, it's a slight step up from "Smash Cut", which was absolutely terrible.
