In this ambitious look at the music industrys digital revolution, freelance music writer Knopper admirably attempts to make sense of more than three decades of fitful technological innovation and ego clashes. The story begins with the antidisco rallies of the late 1970s, spends a great deal of time on the excesses of the CD era (with an unnecessary detour into the nefarious business dealings of boy band manager Lou Pearlman), then chronicles the reign of Napster and its eventual usurpation by Apples legal iTunes service. Knopper is at his best giving life to the tales of technological innovation and diligent salesmanship that fueled these shifts in consumer trends, as in the story of the CDs invention and the subsequent difficulty of persuading label executives to adopt the new format. The later tales of backroom deals featuring Steve Jobs and various label heads have the spark of real drama, but this is undermined by Knopper not having access to Jobs and by the historical proximity of the events. It's like reading the world's longest obituary

Being in my early forties, I am just old enough (and just young enough) to have lived through pretty much every stage of the decline of the record industry so painstakingly detailed in this book.

I grew up going to record stores, then chain stores, then saw the advent of the CD when I started college. I lived through the CD boom and read about big-name acts signing new contracts worth untold millions of dollars primarily because their back catalogs were selling so well when the world was upgrading their record collections from vinyl to CD. I watched in horror as the "boy bands" seemed to take over. I again watched in horror as the labels pushed only the best-selling artists and dumped the rest from their rosters. I moaned in disbelief when I learned that WalMart was the biggest brick-and-mortar retailer of recorded music, and that was sad and unfortunate because their selection was so narrow. I nearly cried as the rock radio stations I listened to became far more repetitive and far less interesting. I was initially horrified by Napster and sided with Metallica -- file swapping was theft, plain and simple. But the labels' litigious response to it was no less outrageous. Understandable on some level, but outrageous nonetheless. When digital music became the norm, the powers-that-be did everything they could to stem the tide, and they did it in such a way to sour the record-buying experience.

Perhaps worst of all, though, is that the "album" has all but died. It's all about the hit single. There is almost no such thing as artist development anymore. Remember a few decades ago when artist would put out a record every calendar year and tour behind it every calendar year? Each year you could count on seeing your favorite band (Van Halen, Journey, KISS, Rush, The Police, maybe even The Who) tour all over the U.S., even hitting the secondary markets. Nowadays many big-name artists wait up to 3 or 4 years between releases. MTV and the labels milking every last drop from every last album changed all that.

Basically, I lived through every milestone event Steve Knopper details in this book. I stood on the sidewalk and watched that entire fiasco parade pass by. This book reads like an "E! True Hollywood Story" account of the demise of the record industry. Part of the fun of browsing through a huge record store's bins was getting to discover and listen to new music. Not any more. There's a huge difference between trying out a new record at the listening station and hearing a 30-second snippet on iTunes or Amazon. There's very little of the feeling of ownership anymore, at least with digital download. No more opening up the record or CD to peruse the insert booklet, read the liner notes, read the lyrics, look at the artwork and photos, check the credits to see what guest artist or studio musicians may have played on it or co-written a tune or two.

But in today's world that may not be important to everyone. It's hard to believe, but there is an entire generation of kids out there buying music online who have NEVER set foot in a record store EVER. Boggles the mind. I'm getting old, but I'm not THAT old.

Many people my age saw most of these events as they happened. The great thing about Knopper's book is that we now have names to put with those events. We know the "what", and thanks to Knopper's research we also know the "who", "why", and "how".

As with many other culture-shifting events and history-making events, the change in the tide isn't always an inevitable force of nature. Often it is the end result of the actions (or lack of action) of a relatively few people of influence, the events affected by their individual personalities, ambitions, prejudices, greediness, or what-have-you. You might even say that the whole reason the record industry playing field was moved in the first place was because of the rise of the personal computer, and for that we have various players like Gates, Jobs, Woz, folks at the Palo Alto Research Center at Xerox, IBM, etc. One might say the music business changed so dramatically because the personal computer industry simply came into existence. Had the latter never developed (or developed differently), the former may not have changed the same way.

I guess a better introduction for Knopper's book could have been the book "Accidental Empires" or the PBS documentary "Triumph of the Nerds". Everything that happens is a result of many seemingly unrelated things that happened previously. Everything is connected.

"Appetite For Self-Destruction" is a fascinating book. Highly recommended.

Excellent Book about the Free Fall of the American Music Industry

This is an excellent book. Steve Knopper, contributing editor for Rolling Stone magazine, and who has also written for such publications as Wired, Esquire, Entertainment Weekly and the Chicago Tribune, has written this book detailing the trends from the near death of the music industry in the late 70s to early 80s to the life-saving entities such as MTV and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. Knopper provides meticulous detail about the negative and positive trends of the music industry over the past 20 years to the newly developed digital age of downloading music via iTunes. Knopper mentions names of major labor leaders; details the decisions these major labels have made that have been effective and those decisions that have been fairly detrimental.

Moreover, Knopper describes how the rise of Napster ultimately lead to severe bleeding within the music industry due to the consumer now having the knowledge to easily pirate music. The reaction of the music industry to Napster and its smaller subsequent file-sharing groups eventually lead to the now slow death of major labels. Knopper details how and why this happened. Additionally, Knopper details how Steve Jobs (of Apple computers) strong-armed the five major music labels into deals that lead to iTunes and huge sales of the iPod. This trend ultimately changed the music industry and pushed it into a direction to which it has not adjusted very well.

In fact, according to Knopper, it has taken the major music labels nearly ten years to realize how technology can actually help the industry, but now its probably too late. Moreover, many bands and artists are actually turning to their own independent methods of releasing their new albums and songs. These bands and artists (such as NIN, Radiohead, the Eagles, etc.) are realizing that this new avenue is actually more appealing to their listeners and making them a larger profit than they ever had signing contracts with the major labels.

This, and much more is described in great detail in this work. This is a very telling book about how greed and ignorance has actually cost the music industry in the long run. And, according to Knopper, if the major labels do not make massive changes very quickly, the music industry as we have known it for the last several decades will no longer exist.

Pack up the moon

I had to put this book down after I read about 5 chapters. I do not care to read the f word or the other bits of bad words thrown in on every line. The story may be a great one but I won't read this stuff!!! It turned me off to the story being told.

A page-turner

It's not a book that will haunt me now that I'm finished with it in that deeply impacting way that others have done. But while I was reading it, I couldn't put it down.

I love the attention McPartlin pays to each character, loving them each equally, creating real people with complex lives out of every one of them. Her voice as an author is delightful, very pleasant and quick-paced. Despite the heartbreaking beginning to this book, the tone is quite uplifting.

It is clear that McPartlin put much thought into the emotions that accompany love, loss, and friendship. As I read in the back of the book, she draws, of course, on some of her own experiences, particularly with death of loved ones. Believe me, there is much to be learned from this book about the power of friendship and the search for one's own soul.

In short, the plot allows for a heartwarming journey through one woman's life and those closest to her. The author's skillfulness as a writer induces tears and laughter both. You can't ask for a better mix.

I may not be kept up at night tossing and turning thinking about Pack Up the Moon. Don't get me wrong, it's a deep book. But it is tender and loving enough that you feel healed and at peace after reading it. So I know that should I think back to this book in the future, it will be with warmth. Recommend it.

Poignant and heartwarming

I usually stay away from "heavy" reading during my summer breaks, but I thought this looked interesting and decided to give it a shot. I greatly enjoyed the story and found myself moving from laughter to tears and back again throughout the book. I think McPartlin does an excellent job developing a meaningful story with vibrant characters. I would agree with other posters who felt the editing was a bit shoddy. There were several mistakes that could potentially distract readers. All in all though a great book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Sabrina Bryan is a member of the multiplatinum recording group The Cheetah Girls. She has portrayed the character "Dorinda" in the multimovie Cheetah Girls franchise on the Disney Channel. Dang it. The phone rang, completely interrupting my train of thought. I put the laptop down on the round, furry chair I'd been sitting on and got up to look for the phone. I could hear it ringing from somewhere in my bedroom. Dang it again, I tripped over a cardboard box that was marked Avery/Magazines.

We'd moved into this house almost a month ago and a lot of my stuff was still in boxes, waiting for me to put it someplace. I'd convinced my parents before we moved to ditch my old bedroom furniture I'd had since I was eight. They had promised me I could get new furniture, including a bookcase just to hold all my magazines. But we hadn't even started shopping yet. All I had right now was a mattress, my old turquoise comforter set, and boxes. My room theme could be called Modern Cardboard Box. I kicked one of the boxes off to the side.

Rrrrring!

I narrowed the ringing noise down to somewhere on my bed. I moved a pile of clothes, my backpack, some pillows...and there it was. I saw my mom's cell number on the caller ID.

"Hi, Mom," I said.

"Hi, honey. I just wanted to let you know that Dad and I are working late tonight. Did you finish your homework?"

Um...

"Avery? Your homework is done, correct?" my mom said.

Uh...

Then I heard a phone ringing in the background on her end. Excellent. It was perfect timing for my mom's business line to be interrupting our call.

"Oh, I have to take this," she said. "Love you!"

I heard a click as she hung up. Yes! Thank you, customer, for interrupting us, as well as -- I hoped -- buying products from my parents' new company. I went back over to my chair and set my laptop back on my knees. But I was no longer in the mood to write any more of the MySpace bulletin; my mom's call had snapped me back into reality.

I reread my poll. Shopping! Concerts! TV sets! Movie premieres! Oh, the glam possibilities of life in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, those were options in somebody else's life, not mine.

It's pretty pathetic when the most exciting thing that happens in my day is making up a fake fantasy bulletin.

I held down the delete button and erased everything I'd typed. My parents always said I had an active imagination. I started a new bulletin and typed in a real poll.

Hello...people? Where were my Ohio friends in my time of need? It was around dinnertime there, so somebody should've been available to chat with me.

I felt a pang knowing that if I was back in Ohio, I'd be there with them, planning for homecoming. I couldn't tell them I was feeling left out, though. I tried that a couple days ago, and Nicole said, "What do you have to complain about? You live in L.A.!" And a month ago, I would have thought the same thing. I still couldn't believe I actually lived in one of the most exciting cities on earth. My parents had worked in regular sales jobs back in Ohio, but then someone my mom worked with told her about a business franchise they could start up in California.

They'd called me into our dining room to discuss, as they put it, a major life decision. How did I feel about uprooting our family and taking a risk to start a new life in Los Angeles?

"We might move to L.A.?" I asked, not sure if I was hearing them right. "You mean live there?"

"Yes, we would live in a suburb of Los Angeles," my dad said. "I know you've never been to L.A...."

Well, no, I'd never been to L.A. in real life, but I'd definitely been there in my dream life. I'd been semiobsessed with celebrities since, well, pretty much forever. Even back in fifth grade, before I was allowed free reign on the Internet, I spent all my allowance on popstar magazines. I was my friends' go-to person for the star gossip and the newest posters to put up on our walls.

So of course, Hollywood was somewhere I'd always hoped to go. But I was thinking more along the lines of a weekend visit, like if my dad had a sales conference there instead of the usual places, like Des Moines. And then I'd convince him to take me with him and I would have the chance to stalk the stars' homes from a tour bus and put my feet in the cement footprints on the Walk of Fame. And then I'd go back home to Ohio for the rest of my life.

I never even remotely thought there was a chance my parents would move us there.

"I know this is the only home you've ever known, sweetie," my mom said. "And you've never been to California, so if you want a few days to think about it before you weigh in with your answer -- "

"Mom! Dad!" I interrupted. "The answer is heck, yeah! Let's move to L.A.!!"

"Well, breaking the news to Avery went far better than I'd expected," my dad said dryly, as he whisked my mom out of the dining room before I could change my mind.

However, breaking the news to my friends didn't go quite as I'd envisioned. I was preparing myself for some tears, declarations of how much I'd be missed, and maybe some drama about how they couldn't go on without me. I'd called an emergency meeting at Starbucks.

"I have major news," I announced. "I'm moving to L.A. in a couple weeks."

"No way!" Nicole said. "That is amazing!"

"I know," I said. "It's -- "

Wait. Did she say amazing?

"Ahem," I said. "I said I was moving to L.A. Moving, as in leaving here? Permanently?"

"L.A.! Ohmygosh! You have to get me Shiloh's autograph!" Kendall squealed.

"Shiloh's autograph?" I asked. "I'm moving to L.A. and you ask for Shiloh's autograph?"

"Seriously, Kendall," Nicole said. "Give poor Avery a break. I mean, Shiloh's autograph?"

Thank you. After all, I'd just announced I was leaving Ohio forever.

"Shiloh isn't even old enough to sign an autograph," Nicole continued. "Avery, try to get us Zahara's instead."

"Is anyone understanding that I'm leaving?" I said. "We've been friends since second grade. And I'm leaving."

"Well, officially, Lexa's only been friends with us since fourth grade," Nicole said.

"No, it was third," Lexa insisted.

"Not really," Nicole said. "You only thought you were in third. Really, we were only using you for your Bratz dolls."

"What?" Lexa sputtered.

"I'm just kidding," Nicole said. "Kind of."

"You guys!" I said. "Focus! I'm leaving in just a few weeks! This is one of the last times we'll all be sitting here on our couch at Starbucks together."

"Oh, Avery," Kendall said. She reached out and grabbed my hand. I started to get a little lump in my throat as I looked around at the friends I'd known almost forever.

"Okay, this is touching and all," Nicole said. "But a little too Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for me. I feel like we're about to swear our allegiance to our friendship and pledge that nothing can tear us apart."

"Would that be so bad?" I asked.

"Not if we got a pair of magic jeans that would fit all of us like they did in Traveling Pants," Lexa said. "That would be sweet."

"Ooh, can they be True Religions?" Kendall said. "Or Rich & Skinny."

"Those would be magic jeans if they made you look rich and skinny," Nicole said. Lexa snorted.

"You guys!" I said, a little too loudly. Everyone stopped and looked at me. "I need your support here."

"You're right" Nicole said. "You do need our support. Okay, guys, we need to rally around Avery."

Finally, someone was listening to me.

"We have to get Avery ready to go out there and represent us!" Nicole continued. "She doesn't have much time. She's going to have to go all Ashlee and make some facial tweaks. I wonder if we have enough time to get Avery on I Want a Famous Face?!"

"Ooh, make yourself into L.C.!" Kendall turned to me. "I love The Hills!"

"You think?" Lexa said. "She might be able to pull off Audrina, but I can't see her as a Heidi."

"Boobs!" Nicole yelled so loud that the guy at the table next to us spilled his coffee. "You need boobs!"

I sat there, slightly stunned, as my friends made a to-do list:

• Get TanTastic's thirty-day all-you-can-spray tan special
• Dye my hair platinum
• Get clothes other than my usual earth-toned Hollister/AE/Abercrombie...

Ever had drama? Read this book.

There are many reasons to read this book. The authors made it simple to "see" the story play out by making the characters realistic and easy to relate to, the plot line is both believable and fun, and they incorporated lots and lots of pop culture. But I think the biggest thing that makes this book different is how well it built technology into the story-- like cell phones and MySpace, which we all use now. I'd never read a book that seemed to "get" how we use those things and build them into the story so well.
If you keep up with pop culture, and you have ever experienced drama - online or otherwise - this book is a must-read for you.

An excellent read for tweens. teens and adults!

Being a fan of Sabrina Bryan, I was very excited to see what this book was about. I was buying it for my two daughters to read, thinking it would make an excellent tween/teen read. I started reading it to get a feel for what it was all about before giving it to them. I was completely sucked into this story! I was laughing out loud in some parts, I felt empathy for many of the characters, it was fun to read about all the pop culture and Hollywood glitz and glam. The book also sends a message about the downside of spreading gossip, and has a very positive message about staying true to yourself. This was just a great read, I would reccomend it to anyone from 11 or 12 on up. Kudos to Sabrina and Julia for coming up with this idea.......brilliant! Hope we see more from them in the future.

Princess of Gossip

This was a great book!! A must read for all star-struck teens, adults who admit to being celebrity gossip hounds, and those of us that are but don't admit it. This book is a fun, well written debut for Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan who continues to expand her horizons beyond singing and dancing and into projects supporting the health and happiness of today's young girls. The story is a compelling tale of a high school girl, who, after moving to LA with her parents, gets caught up in the online celebrity gossip scene. It is bursting with pop culture references, insider Hollywood knowledge, and is a fast, easy, and enjoyable read. The main characters are believable and what happens to them unfolds in a fashion that you can't help but get drawn in to. It sends the requisite "it's ok to be yourself" message of many young adult books but has a fresh, modern feel that all will enjoy. I loved it and I am far from my teen years! I'm sending it to all my nieces for Christmas - and keeping a copy for my bookshelf too!

Beautiful memoir

Working as a student researcher at CalTech, Stacey O'Brien brought a four-day-old owlet home from the lab and named him Wesley. For the next nineteen years, he would be her constant companion and beloved friend. This is a beautiful memoir about the relationship that O'Brien and Wesley developed. O'Brien writes not only as Wesley's besotted owner, but also from the perspective of a biologist, which gives the book a depth and authority that a lot of "my beloved pet" stories lack. This book was fascinating, filled to the brim with exciting facts about owls, but also some very funny anecdotes - such as when Wesley decided that he wanted to learn to swim. It was a really moving, lovely book, and everyone I recommended it to has loved it.

An eye opening and tender read.

I can't add much to what the other reviewers have already said. If you're an animal lover of any stripe then Wesley the Owl is a book you'll want to spend some time with. Stacey O'Brien's love and affection for her friend Wesley comes out on every page. Animal friends have much to offer their human companions though I've never thought much about birds as pets that can actually offer companionship. That was my ignorance operating and Ms O'Brien has set me straight. Thank you Stacey.

If you have children read Wesley to them and experience the book as a family. You won't regret it.

Wesley remains in my heart

I normally choose non-fiction and, while this story is true, it almost reads like a novel. In this case, that was a strength. I like that the author started at the beginning and I didn't learn how or when Wesley died until near the end. In Alex and Me, it started after he died, before I cared about him or had bonded with him. I much preferred to follow Wesley's life in pretty much its actual order. I was impressed with the compassion and caring shown by the scientists with whom the author worked, and I found the details of their work very interesting. I also absolutely fell in love with Wesley - his personality, he curiosity, his sense of loyalty and fun. I was melancholy for a couple of days after I finished the book, realizing he was no longer in the world enriching it with his presence.

While I don't believe the average person should take in a wild animal, I disagree with the reviewer who felt Wesley should have either been released back to the wild to die young, due to his nerve-damaged wing, or killed as a baby. How the world would have been diminished if he hadn't been alive in it for 19 years!! How much we would not have learned about owls and their intelligence and their capacity to love and learn! I don't find anything "humane" about euthanizing a baby rather than allowing a loving professional to raise it and allow it a really full life. Because the author is a professional, she was able to record information and owl communication that other scientists would never have had access to otherwise. And, not only was Wesley allowed to enjoy a full life, but the author's life was enriched by their relationship, and the lives of everyone who reads their story are also enriched by it. The more opportunities we have to experience deep human-animal relationships, the more humane we become as a human species.

My only criticism of the book is that I would have liked to have seen color pictures of Wesley as an adult, as the author described his coloring so well and it sounded striking. Also, it would have been nice to have had the pictures in chronological order, and to have included some pictures of his later life.

I have recommended this book to many people who I know love animals and who believe, as I do, that they are much more intelligent and experience more genuine emotions than many people give them credit for. I feel blessed to have learned of Wesley and shared his story.

Not black or white

Interesting that all of the reviews posted so far are either 5 star or 1 star. It seems that people are rating the book based on whether agree with what the author has to say or not. That is no way to judge a book. A book can be excellent even if don't agree with one conclusion the author comes to, and a book can be poorly written even if you agree with every word in it.

I think the title of "I Don't Believe in Atheists" is plain stupid. Beyond that, Hedges has some very interesting things to say about the interaction of religion (and nonreligion) with politics, and it's worth reading by anyone who has read any of the other recent literature about atheism.

But Hedges did himself a disservice by framing the book as a critique of Dawkins, Harris, etc. because in many cases he's totally misrepresenting what they wrote. He should have just stuck to writing his own ideas on the topic, as he has in his other books, and this book would have been much better. As it is, it just sounds like he's mad because the so-called "New Atheists" don't like what he believes in. Hedges is a better writer -- and thinker -- than that. It's a shame he didn't do his best writing in this book. But, then again, believers tend to become irate when people insult their gods.

I saw a debate between Chris Hedges and Sam Harris on this topic on TV a few months ago, and Hedges was completely incoherent. I had read some of his other writing (books and online) in the past and was hoping he'd do a better job in writing about this topic than he did in debating it.

Oh well. I bet his publisher was pushing him to rush his book to market. Too bad.

What?! Who?

I might not be the typical reviewer of this book. I am an atheist, but one who is as annoyed as Hedges over the excesses and irresponsibilities of the more dogmatic of "public figure" atheists. But, wait! I gave this book two stars. Why would I give a book whose message I essentially agree with 2 stars?

Well, for starters, I don't agree with much in this book; suprising, because I thought that I would. Of the scores of things Hedges could have challengd these atheists - Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens - on, Hedges manages to miss most of them and add some that are quite illigitimate. Had I written this book, I would have taken the three authors to task on a few things:

a.) their simplistic and baffling view that not only religious extremists, but moderates, are to be condemmed. (Isn't religion a tool? Just as people can do bad with it, so they can do good, depending on their motive?)

b.) these authors occasional faith-driven zeal, that given enough time, sceince will explain all of the things it has tried and failed to explain (like morality, even though science deals with 'is' rather than 'ought' questions. (And don't get me started on the idea of 'memes' as opposed to the older, more sensical, idea of 'ideas.')

c.) These authors' very frequent exhibitions of the type of fanatical extremism and dogmatism they rightly point out as a flaw of their opponents (fundamentalists).

The only of these Hedges hits on is the third. Hedges is not even primarily against atheism. He is, rather, against dogmatism and fanasticism, which he rightly sees exhibited in spades amongst these new 'public figure' atheists.

But in his zeal - and judging by the redundancy, this was a book written in great haste without the benefit of editing or critical thought - he attributes many things to these authors that they, in fact, never actually say. This, of course, renders his books quite superfluous, irrelevant, and unimportant.

His main argument against these atheists is that they believe in moral progress in a utopian sense. Get rid of religion, they are alleged to say, and the world can be a utopia. Hedges says this of them several times. As one whose read all of the authors to which he refers, I was confused, because I don't remember any of them saying this. At least, I figured, he will quote them on this at some point. He never did.

He suggests that these authors do not believe in any idea resembling original sin; that humans have both a good AND A DARK narure. That is funny in a naive sort of way, because if Hedges had done homework, he would have easily known that the whole idea of evolutionary psychology (to which all of our authors subscribe)is ALWAYS lambasted for recognizing that we - evolutionary creatures - have inherited our predecessors' moral virtues and shortcomings. (Hedges should have remembered the uproar at Dawkins' book 'The Selfish Gene!').

For their parts, Harris and Hitchens are also quite clear in their books on the idea that moral perfection and utopianism should not be seriously taken. Hitchens, after all, is a raging fan of the anti-utopian George Orwell, who makes several moralistic appearances in Hitchens' book. And Harris says repeatedly that once religion is out, humans will just as easily fight over other things; the only difference will be that hopefully those things are more solvable and tractible than are beliefs that God gave this group or that group the holy land. (Religion IS in fact a good, but not the only, conversation stopper.)

Quite simply, Hedges' attribution and scolding of atheists that believe in unbounded moral perfectability is arguing against a ghost. Those atheists died out with Stalin. And as dead as they are, so dead is Hedges 'argument.'

Beyond this, Hedges also condems Harris, Dawkins, and Hitchens - quite oddly - for the belief that humans can morally impove AT ALL!! Hedges is a pessimist in the fine tradition of those depressed social thinkers like Reinhold Neibuhr and Soren Kierkegaard. Like them, he reminds us that humans have natures and sometimes, those natures are selfish and devious. As such, we should never try to overcome any part of ourselves; we should simply accept the fact that sin exists.

Of course, anyone whose ever read Reinhold Neibuhr - I have, even as an atheist - knows that he never, ever was that pessimilstic. He simply suggested that moral PERFECTIBILITY was a chimera. Try as we might, there is always going to be an ideal that we fall short of, but that this should not keep us from trying for it and striving for it.

Hedges on the other hand reminds us again and again that "we live in a constant state of war," and that it is no good to try and change it. So how dare the atheists suggest that if we try hard, we may be able to gradually move beyond some of the moral quandaries of the day. Of course, we have in the past. At least in Western countries: slavery is outlawed women are no longer property of men; feudalism is gone; monarchy and dictatorship is more and more rare and looked down on; the first bills of rights have appeared on the planet. One wonders: if Hedges were writing 300 years ago, would any of this have happened? Or would he simply have reminded us of the evil that comes when we try to do better than we have in the past. And how dare the wicked atheists for suggesting that progress is a goal to strive for!!

I write this lengthy review, quite simply, to give prospective readers an idea of how poor this book is both in intellectual quality and message. If one wants to argue against the 'new atheism' for things like their dogmatism, and morally simplistic judgments against all things with the hint of religion, then do that! (I will welcome it myself!) But to suggest that the new atheism is evil because of a belief in moral perfection that none of its authors write about, and for the audacity to claim that humans can be decent if they try hard - what? Who?

Worth Reading Even If You Don't Buy Everything He Says

My interest in this book came from a nasty experience in college some years ago. I was talking about Christianity and its effect on my life. Apparently my views were too conservative and/or orthodox to suit two people I was talking to. They started to get in my face and insist that I was wrong. No matter what I said, they would take turns interrupting me and insisting that I was wrong and that Christianity had "changed," and that I needed to change with it. That I had been raised in the home of an ordained minister and had just about cut my teeth on a Bible didn't matter - to them, I didn't know that I was talking about and they wouldn't listen. I was bothered by this - not so much that they didn't agree with me, but that they wouldn't listen, and at one time they were almost shouting and backing me up against a wall - literally! Later on I thought, "If a so-called "fundamentalist" Christian had acted like that, they would have had his/her head on a platter!"

When I first found this book, I wondered if Chris Hedges had the same type of experience I did. Probably not - but his message rang true.

In my opinion, the title of this book is misleading. Hedges doesn't necessarily disapprove of atheists, if they have reached their position with an honest heart. His issue is with the "fundamentalist mentality" which he claims can happen as much with atheists as with believers in God.

This book contains a badly-needed two-fold message. First of all, that we need to come back to the idea of human corruptibility - a truth that we don't need to be Christians to accept. The other part both religious and non religious people need to reject the idea that we can perfect ourselves. In other words - we need to understand that the biggest evil is not outside of us, but rather IN us. I appreciated his use of quotes about human fallibility from sources who do not claim to be Christians (e.g., Sigmund Freud).

I found the book useful, and Hedges explained some things which I had felt on a gut level but couldn't articulate the way that I wanted to. I also appreciated the background information on how the tension developed between the United States and the Islamic world. I think that the chapter "Humiliation and Revenge" was worth the price of the whole book. He does not try to whitewash either professing Christians or Moslems, showing that both sides did some dreadful things.

As to what Harris, Dawkins, and the other atheists are like as people or what is in their minds and hearts - well, I can't say. I have checked out Dawkins' book and need to read it entirely to know exactly what he says. And in all fairness, I need to do the same with Harris' book. However, the quote on page 122 that Hedges gives from Harris' book THE END OF FAITH makes my blood run cold. I truly hope that . . . "facilitating the emergence of civil societies everywhere else . . . " doesn't consist in forcing something on other societies. The rest of the quote strikes me as implying that in some cases, a benign dictatorship will be necessary, and maybe even from outside. However, I'll need to see the entire Harris quote in context.

Both sides of the argument raise some questions for me:

First of all, is the problem actual religious belief - or is it how some people try to force it on others? Real Christianity does not "force" people to believe.

Second, is the problem Utopianism? Or is it what we feel we have to do to achieve it?

Also, I believe that both sides need to come to a common definition of the following words:

1. FUNDAMENTALIST. When I was younger, a "fundamentalist" was someone who wanted to return to the "fundamentals" or basic ideas of a belief (usually a religion). It did not necessarily refer to a pushy mindset.

2. LITERAL interpretation of a sacred text. A "literal" interpretation can mean that the text says what it means while acknowledging that some passages are poetic, mythical, etc.

3. FAITH. In my opinion, faith does not mean believing something without questioning. In fact, "faith" is what makes me able to get on an airplane and travel even though I can't see the air that's holding it up. The Bible Itself says, "We walk by faith, not by sight." It doesn't say "We walk by faith, not by reason."

We live in a time where many people who claim to be religious are not behaving well. I also remember a time when atheistic governments were mistreating religious people.

For all of us, a big dose of thorough self-examination is in order.

Excellent, Beautiful, Wonderful Story.

This is one I borrowed from the library but definately will buy to add to my collection. I read this leisurely in 4 days staying up pretty late on the 4th day trying to finish it. It is amazing what someone can get through when God is carrying them. I am astonished and happily excited by a story like this one. Thank You for sharing Mrs. Brookshire.

Wonderfully written

This was so beautifully written. For those who have been deceived by one of these evil downlow men it's a refreshing look at how a woman has to listen to her inner spirit and actually listen to God and wait for HIM to bring us the man of our dreams.
I especially loved the part about the DL man's crazy ride to the Emergency room. I laughed until I cried about a very sad situation. But it was funny as hell, and just goes to show God don't like ugly. They got what they sent out into the universe. I'm so happy the writer has a healthy little girl and dynamic husband. I escaped before I married a serial liar like her deseased ex. Praise God. And my soulmate found me. He had been through the fire with the female version of a low life dog. Makes us both appreciate each other better.
