Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia Revival, and the Struggle for Iraq, by Patrick Cockburn

Whatever else the United States intended when it invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003, it was not to hand the country over to a 32-year-old militant cleric who fought against their presence from the start and whom former Iraqi administrator L. Paul Bremer III described as a “Bolshevik Islamist.” Yet, as the occupation steadily disintegrates, the likelihood grows ever stronger that Muqtada al-Sadr, the black-turbaned leader of Iraq's poor Shiites, will take power when the Americans finally leave. In this compelling and narrative-driven account, Patrick Cockburn, one of the bravest and most experienced correspondents reporting from the war, tells the story of Muqtada and his extraordinary rise to become what Canadian journalist Naomi Klein described as “the single greatest threat to U.S. military and economic control of Iraq.” In these pages, Cockburn looks at the young cleric's family background, in particular the assassination of his father and two brothers by Saddam's hit men, his leadership of the 70,000-strong Mahdi army, the links between his movement Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Iranian leadership, and his frequent confrontations with the American military, including the pitched battle in the cemetery of Najaf and the recent mass demonstrations demanding an end to the occupation. This is no dry, academic treatise. Cockburn's account draws on dramatic, firsthand dealings with the Mahdi army, including a tense encounter at a roadblock outside Najaf in which he was nearly killed. However, although it often reads like an adventure story, Muqtada! provides a vital analysis of a movement that will be critical to the future of Iraq after the Americans leave.

From Publishers Weekly
Cockburn (The Occupation: War and Resistance in Iraq), a veteran Middle East correspondent for The Independent, knew the Iraq occupation was doomed when, in 2004, his Irish passport saved him from certain death at the hands of Mehdi Army militiamen convinced he was an American spy: "Bush and Blair never seemed to understand that the problem was not training or equipment, but legitimacy and loyalty." Building on this idea, Cockburn takes a close look at Muqtada al-Sadr, the country's major Shi'ite opposition leader, who has been consistently demonized and belittled by U.S. authorities even as he gains legitimacy among Iraqis. Calling him "the most important and surprising figure to emerge" in post-invasion Iraq, Cockburn details Muqtada's rise, beginning in 1999 when he took his assassinated father's place as head of the Sadrists, a populist religious movement. Mounting frustration toward the U.S. led many to join the Sadrists, the only Shia group to oppose outright the occupation, quickly making Muqtada the political representative of millions. Cockburn's incisive critique of U.S. policy mistakes in Iraq goes back to the first invasion, and draws some dire conclusions, among them that it's too late for Iraq "to exist as anything more than a loose federation." This probing look at a singularly divisive, undoubtedly important figure makes an invaluable resource for anyone weighing U.S. policy in Iraq.

Review
"Patrick Cockburn is, quite simply, the best Western journalist at work in Iraq today. And now he comes forward to warn us that the end game there is near, and we'd better pay much more attention to Muqtada al-Sadr. Cockburn takes us behind the clich?s and half-truths to describe a complicated political operative who will play a huge role in the power struggle that is sure to come."-- Seymour Hersh

"Muqtada is the story of Iraq's least known political figure who, unfortunately for the United States, is arguably its most important. Patrick Cockburn draws on thirty years' experience covering Iraq and his own extraordinary courage to produce this gripping account of the Shiite cleric and his Sadrist movement."-- Peter W. Galbraith

"No serious student of Iraq has failed to incur a debt to the intrepid and intelligent Patrick Cockburn."-- Christopher Hitchens

"Patrick Cockburn is one of the few journalists who has covered the Iraq crisis almost from its beginning. His peerless reporting has been instrumental in uncovering the true dimensions of the tragedy of Iraq. His new book on Muqtada al-Sadr and the radical Shia of Iraq is probing and perceptive."-- Ali Allawi

"No subject could be more important and, of course, Patrick Cockburn knows Iraq as few foreigners do. The right writer and the right book."-- David Rieff

"It is hard to imagine anyone, I mean any other Westerner, getting a clearer take on this slippery and moody character." -- Dexter Filkins, The New Republic

"Americans need to learn more about [Muqtada], and Cockburn's empathetic, thoughtful study is a good place to start." -- Vali Nasr, The Washington Post

"What other Western journalist writes about Iraq with the intimacy and feel of Patrick Cockburn? This is a brilliant book." -- Martin Amis

A brief (but presently the only) biography of perhaps the most important figure in Iraq.
By Charles Fenwick
General Petraeus' recent report to Congress contained the name of only one person. It was not Nouri Al-Maliki (Prime Minister of Iraq) or Abu Ayyub Al-Masri (head of Al-Qaeda in Iraq), but Muqtada Al-Sadr, the subject of this book. That, combined with the fact that it is the only biography of Sadr on the market establishes its importance.

In the first chapter, the author establishes his bona fides showing that he is not a journalist that never ventures out of the Green Zone. He gives a dramatic account of an incident with Sadr supporters at a check-point as he was attempting to travel to Najaf to interview an official within the Sadrist movement.

In the subsequent chapters, the reader receives a thumbnail sketch of the Shia in Iraq and offers a biography of Muqtada's predecessors in leading the movement, who were his father and his father's cousin. While seemingly sparse, it is actually the fullest account of their lives that can be found (in English, at least). Also, while some may balk that there are so many chapters that do not deal with Muqtada himself, it is absolutely vital context that allows the reader to understand the nature of the movement that Muqtada became the leader of.

Most of the balance of the book is devoted to Muqtada's role in the events following the invasion of Iraq. As was the case with the first chapter, the coverage is enhanced due to Cockburn's 'outside the safe zone' reporting.

The strength of the book lies in the biographical details on the Sadr's gained from personal interviews. They are to be found nowhere else and will certainly be a building block for any subsequent biographies. The book makes for lively reading and because of that, can easily be read in the span of an evening or two.

There are two flaws I found in the book, one fairly trivial, the other one representing a significant caveat. The trivial one lies in how the early chapters are written. They are very choppy chronologically, there are multiple points where the author gets ahead of himself and the reader is continually jumped back and forth between recent and distant past. The more significant one deals with topics outside of the biography. One example is how Cockburn breezily dismisses claims of Iranian support for the Sadr movement (in which the evidence was the roadside bombs being used) by stating that roadside bombs have been used since the 1920's. But there was more to the case than he reports: The damning evidence was the very specific design that was being used. Another is by offering Petraeus' statement on improved security in Baghdad and dismissing it with a statement that only a trickle of people have returned to their original neighborhood. Clearly, the two statements are not exclusive. It is unfortunate that his analysis and reporting of American leaders is wholly lacking the nuance and detail that exists when he deals with figures in the Sadrist movement.

The flaws notwithstanding, I was very glad to see this book's appearance and was pleased with it overall. As brief as it is, it still represents the most comprehensive account of Muqtada and his movement out there. While there will certainly be more thorough books in the future (it is practically a given that someone will attempt a comparison of Sadr's movement and Hizbollah), this will more than suffice for now. Four stars.

A Personal View of the Shia Political Culture and Muqtada al-Sadr
By Daniel Hurley
The author provides both a first hand account of the Shia poltical environment after the fall of Saddam's regime as well as a history of the unique and bitter relationship between the Shia and Saddam that is most interesting for westerners as the author explains not only the conflicts between the Shia and Sunni but also between the Shia themselves. The book is not intended to be a bio of Muqtada al-Sadr but to underline his role in the Shia political conflicts within Iraq today. The most interesting aspects of the book is the telling of how the Shia were punished and killed during Saddam regime particularly Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr's father, Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr. In summary yet informative detail, the author explains how the murder of Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr caused a split among the Shia particularly those leaders that fled the country and then returned after Saddam's fall. The best example of this violent split is when Sayyid Abdul Majid al-Khoei returns to Iraq to assume a leadership role among the Shia but then is brutally murdered almost at Muqtada al-Sadr's door step. The slaughter of the Shia after the coalition stopped during Deset Storm, after encouraging an uprising, is well discussed with the bitterness it invoked along with the post Iraq war misunderstandings by the U.S. occupation most noted by Paul Bremmer. This is a very concise but well written educational look at the political situation in Iraq. My only criticism is that books in detail on the middle east should have a glossary of terms and a defined character list, for those less familar with middle east terms and titles, and I include myself, to assist the reader.

Stalingrad in Iraq
By HomoSardonicus
"Stalingrad in Iraq" deserves to be a subtitle of this thin but illuminating volume. The US Army is as entombed in Iraq as the German 6th Army was in the Soviet city along the Volga. The end results are the same in both cases: strategic defeat. Not defeat yet to come, but defeat that is already an accomplished fact: none of the Army's tactical victories can or will alter the fact. I suspect much of the Iraqi resistance knows this while the US refuses to admit it; the Germans never did until it was too late to matter. Interestingly, the book's main character, Muqtada Al-Sadr, doesn't really make an appearance until the end. The author justifies this by stating that the man cannot be understood apart from his family history and the history of Shia Islam. Even before the war began I never believed that the US or its British poodle would have a snowball's chance in Hell of succeeding. Certainly the US experience in Vietnam, the French experience in Vietnam and Algeria, and the British experience in Iraq should have provided some clue to the Coalition's clueless leaders. The religious dimension is crucial to understanding the unfolding catastrophe. The emergence of Shia Islam in Iraq as THE major player alters the region's whole balance of power and threatens to destroy American predominance there for good or certainly for the foreseeable future. The Shias have a very long memory, as this book well explains: what happened 1400 years ago is as current to them as yesterday's news is to us. They never forget and know that their moment has come. Iraq is the spiritual and historical heart of Shia Islam. More than anyone else, so millions believe, Muqtada Al-Sadr exemplifies this conjunction of faith, power and political savvy. The US demonizes him as they demonized Saddam. There is one difference, Al-Sadr is the genuine article while Saddam was nothing more than a hapless egomanical clown--he was easy to knock over, Al-Sadr won't be. Like it or not, he is Iraq's future. this excellent book explains why.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ringo (Choosers of the Slain) surpasses himself in his latest Kildar novel, an SF-tinged action yarn that will appeal to those interested in the psychology of leadership. Mike Harmon, the former SEAL operator who through the vicissitudes of fortune finds himself warlord to a Caucasus tribe, is pressured by those he trusts into mounting a rescue mission deep inside Chechen territory. Their target? A Russian scientist being forced to assist in the transfer of WMD by terrorists who hold his daughter captive. As it becomes apparent that Mike's supposed allies have withheld vital intelligence from him, his responsibilities become almost unbearable and force him into recognizing some unpalatable truths about himself. The Keldara, living fossils of a pagan warrior past, throw themselves into battle with a fervor that's truly religious. The final desperate fight could have been clichéd, but it attains a terrible beauty not unlike that of the Norse Eddas. (Dec.)

Sizwe's Test: A Young Man's Journey Through Africa's AIDS Epidemic, by Jonny Steinberg

At the age of twenty-nine, Sizwe Magadla is among the most handsome, well-educated, and richest of the men in his poverty-stricken village. Dr. Hermann Reuter, a son of old South West African stock, wants to show the world that if you provide decent treatment, people will come and get it, no matter their circumstances.

Sizwe and Hermann live at the epicenter of the greatest plague of our times, the African AIDS epidemic. In South Africa alone, nearly 6 million people in a population of 46 million are HIV-positive. Already, Sizwe has watched several neighbors grow ill and die, yet he himself has pushed AIDS to the margins of his life and associates it obliquely with other people's envy, with comeuppance, and with misfortune.

When Hermann Reuter establishes an antiretroviral treatment program in Sizwe's district and Sizwe discovers that close family members have the virus, the antagonism between these two figures from very different worlds -- one afraid that people will turn their backs on medical care, the other fearful of the advent of a world in which respect for traditional ways has been lost and privacy has been obliterated -- mirrors a continent-wide battle against an epidemic that has corrupted souls as much as bodies.

A heartbreaking tale of shame and pride, sex and death, and a continent's battle with its demons, Steinberg's searing account is a tour-de-force of literary journalism.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Award-winning South African journalist Steinberg, a gay white man, conceived this book to understand the AIDS crisis in his country and, to a limited degree, in himself: though HIV testing and treatment are readily accessible, he wondered, why did so many abstain? Steinberg journeys to the poor black village of Ithanga, where antiretrovirals (ARVs) are available, but electricity and running water are not. He examines the disease through the pseudonymous Sizwe Magadla, a 30-year-old shopkeeper who has resisted testing. Sizwe becomes Steinberg's interpreter and explains the village's traditional health-care system in which witchcraft thrives and Western medical missionaries challenge healers and herbalists. Steinberg traces Sizwe's growing awareness of the myths and realities of the three letters—one persistent belief, that whites created and deployed HIV as a means to regain power, echoes the legacy of apartheid still overshadowing the country—and his attempts to reconcile cultural beliefs with increasingly unassailable medical facts. Steinberg becomes intertwined with his subject, but balances critical distance and compassion with gleanings from his own psychological barriers to HIV testing that further deepen the concern and understanding he accords to Sizwe's story. From Booklist
Journalist Steinberg wonders how, in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic situation such as South Africa’s, it is possible to record more than a thousand new HIV infections per day. He notes that, despite the best efforts of government and the international organization Médecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, or Doctors without Borders), one in eight South Africans has AIDS. Where, he asks, is the disconnect? Why aren’t more South Africans taking advantage of the medical resources available to them? Are there, indeed, enough resources to go around? To answer those and further questions, Steinberg embedded himself in a small village in the rural district of Lusikisiki in Eastern Cape Province and shadowed a young man, a shop owner named Sizwe. The resulting profile of him, his family, friends, and the local MSF facility is a real eye-opener. Besides a portrait of what life is like for the people negotiating this transitional period, Steinberg offers a candid glimpse into Sizwe’s private thoughts and fears, which likely mirror those of many of his countrymen. --Donna Chavez

Review
"Development is challenging not only because of poverty and lack of political will, but also because of failures in human understanding. By addressing the AIDS crisis with acute insight, imagination, and extraordinary compassion, Jonny Steinberg and Sizwe Magadla have done us a great service."

-- Helen Epstein , author of The Invisible Cure: Africa, the West, and the Fight Against Aids

"In this trenchant work, Jonny Steinberg brings us an eloquent and compassionate yet tough-minded view of how one young aspiring South African man, in a marginal village setting, confronts the threat of HIV/AIDS. It is a window onto a complex set of realities -- the power of culture, shame, fear, male identity -- that are difficult for most of us to see or understand. Replete with insights and surprises, Sizwe's Test is a major achievement."

-- J. Stephen Morison , Executive Director, HIV/AIDS Task Force, Center for Strategic and International Studies

"In this vivid account of a journey to the frontline in the battle against AIDS, Jonny Steinberg portrays with acute perception the impact of the epidemic on village life in a small rural community in South Africa."

-- Martin Meredith , author of The Fate of Africa

"Medical specialists and well-meaning bureaucrats working on HIV and AIDS seldom understand the inner struggles of those they seek to help. Jonny Steinberg's account of Sizwe Magadla's story begins to unravel the mix of feelings of shame, pride, and stubborn hope that responses to the AIDS epidemic will have to take into account to be successful."

-- Alan Brody, the former UNICEF Representative in Swaziland, pioneered new approaches to education on HIV and AIDS through the arts.

"Steinberg's narrative...builds a disturbing picture of a society caught in a tragic situation with no clear solutions."

-- Kirkus Reviews

"Award-winning South African journalist Steinberg...balances critical distance and compassion with gleanings from his own psychological barriers to HIV testing that further deepen the concern and understanding he accords to Sizwe's story."

-- Publishers Weekly (starred)

"[T]his forceful narrative...[with] sharp insights and value...has to do with the immense power of stigma, the ways in which we mirror the real or imagined condemnation of others by internalizing it, and of how easily stigma becomes entwined with sexuality."

-- New York Times Book Review (Editor's Choice mention)

"A real eye-opener."

-- Booklist

"Not since Abraham Vergese's haunting 1994 book about eastern Tennessee, My Own Country, has the AIDS epidemic been described so deeply and humanly, and from so many angles. Steinberg...is keenly attuned to the many way a community encounters illness...[and] has ended up with a big, brave, poignant look into the heart of his country."

Outstanding writing, critical insights
By QuiuboMona
This book is a must read for anyone interested in HIV in Africa or South African politics more generally. In following Sizwe through his decision of whether or not to get tested for HIV, it eloquently weaves together the main character's personal life and decision with the cultural, social, and political context that shapes his decision. For many people, it is utterly inconceivable why this disease has so devastated South Africa, and in particular, why a person might choose not to get tested, even now that effective treatment exists. This book goes a long way towards explaining that. It also provides an excellent, very readable narrative about rural life in South Africa--a story that is often overlooked--and about politics all the way from the President down to the local health clinician. Steinberg mixes the self-awareness of the modern ethnographer with the prose of a top-notch journalist.

I really disagree with the reviewer who says that the book is moralistic and pro-apartheid. First of all, re: the title--this is not the original title of the book, it's the unfortunate choice of the American publisher. The original title (for the South African edition) is "Three Letter Plague," which indeed has a less moralistic connotation. I did not perceive the author to be judging the main character at all--in fact, quite the opposite. Regarding Steinberg's portrayal of post-apartheid majority rule in South Africa, yes, the author accurately depicts Mbeki's (as well as Mandela's) total failure to understand HIV and develop an adequate policy on it. In Mandela's case, he is sympathetic--new, unexpected challenge, amongst many many things needing reform. He is not so generous with Mbeki--but then, neither were most South Africans, including blacks (hence why the ANC soundly rejected his bid for presidency of the party in 2007). The most prominent HIV+ activists in the country, most of whom are not white, were incredibly frustrated with Mbeki's response to the crisis. South Africa is a country whose democracy was born out of protest movements, and the very same people who organized against apartheid are now activists on the new struggles, the biggest of which is HIV/AIDS. That Steinberg depicts this does not make him pro-apartheid.

Brilliant
By Crunch Solutions
The fundamental question that Mr Steinberg wrestles with is why people may choose not to take drugs that may preempt death. His honesty, sensitivity and tenacity enable him to explore the dynamics of a rural South African community in a way that I've not encountered. And yes, the man can write.

so much more
By Moten Swing
So much more than a book about AIDS. This is a nuanced, personal, revealing account of one man (Sizwe), his interlocutor (Jonny) and a doctor who figures out how best to deliver services to HIV+ people in the countryside. It examines personalities and policies with equal depth and wisdom. There are no cartoon-character bad guys, just complicated situations, ignorance, bureaucracy, and a great deal of stigma. It is gracefully and thoughtfully written, never trite, seldom judgmental, and sharp as a new blade. I, however, will be trite: "If you read only one book on AIDS in sub-saharan Africa, this is a great choice."

DUN ARD

SCOTLAND

DECEMBER 1295

The clipped fall of boots on stone sounded loud in the deserted hallways of Dun Ard. Though few would be up and about at this early hour, Caden MacAlister had no doubt his cousin would already be hunkered over the estate accounts in his solar as he was each and every morning. Blane MacKiernan, Laird of the MacKiernan, taught the importance of hard work by setting an example.

Caden paused at the heavy wooden door, unconsciously running a large hand through his tousled dark copper hair as he gathered his wits and his courage. He had considered his alternatives time and again. This must be done.

He rapped his knuckles sharply against the door, the vibrations echoing in his stomach. Or was that simply nerves?

"Enter."

He pushed open the door and approached his cousin's desk. "I've come to a decision and I must speak with you." Quickly. Before he lost his nerve.

Blane looked up from the work spread in front of him, a smile creasing his face. "Very well, Caden. Have a seat and share yer great decision with me."

Caden shook his head, declining the offer to sit. He thought better on his feet. "You must choose one of my brothers as your heir. I'm no longer fit to be the next laird of the MacKiernan." There. He'd said it. It was done.

His cousin leaned back in his chair, studying the hands he steepled together. At last he looked up, a confused frown replacing his earlier smile. "I had thought you cared for our people and this land."

"I do. And that's why I ask you to choose another as yer heir." Even though this was all he had ever really wanted.

"Explain yerself."

"The next laird should be someone who'll love this place, these people. Someone who'll look after them, improve their lot in life and pass it all on to his own son to do the same." And he would never be able to do that.

Blane nodded. "Exactly what I've chosen you to do, lad."

"I canna, Cousin. After what's happened with Alycie, I ken now I'll no ever wed. There will be no sons to succeed me."

He would never have a wife. Alycie had found the idea of marriage to him so repulsive she had betrayed his sister and cousin in order to escape him, almost causing their deaths. He would never again put his family in such jeopardy. Nor would he trust another woman. Alycie was now happily installed in the convent on Iona as she had wanted, and he would remain unmarried as the fates had obviously intended.

"Yer young yet, Caden. Mayhap one day you'll change yer mind on this."

"No. I'll no allow any other lass to be forced to face marriage to me. I've made my decision, just as you made yers all those years ago."

Blane rose from his chair, coming around his desk to place a hand on his young cousin's shoulder. "I chose never to wed because I feared any son of mine would carry the madness of my father and my brother. I would no risk exposing Dun Ard and her people to that tragedy again. Yer situation is entirely different. You take too much blame upon yerself, lad."

Caden shook his head. He deserved the blame. He knew his limitations. Of the three MacAlister brothers, he saw himself as the least desirable to a woman. He had neither Andrew's pretty face nor Colin's warrior abilities. He wanted only to manage Dun Ard. To find new ways to help their land and their people prosper. And while one day he would have been the laird of the MacKiernan, that alone wasn't enough to hold a wife. He'd learned that from his experience with Alycie.

No, Caden knew he was not meant to find the happiness of a mate in life. And though he had never known why his cousin remained unwed and childless, he suspected that Blane revealed his reason now in an attempt to provide solace. Solace he didn't deserve. "Still, I dinna thinkÊ.Ê.Ê."

"There's no a need to think on this, lad. I willna choose any to be my heir other than you. I've invested too many years in you and you've learned too well the duties of a laird. You'll go off to school as we'd planned, and when you return you'll pick up where you left off. You are my heir and that's my last word on the subject."

"And when I never wed? When I have no sons to continue the line?"

Blane smiled again, squeezing Caden's shoulder before he dropped his hand and walked back to his chair. "If that is the way of it, then you'll do as I have and choose someone. Perhaps one of yer brothers' brats will succeed you, aye? Now off with you. I've work to do before I take my morning meal."

Caden waited, unsure of what to do next. He'd struggled for weeks trying to make the right decision. And now that he finally had, Blane had dismissed his concerns as minor.

"Go on," Blane encouraged. "Oh, we're still going out to inspect the sheep pens later this morning, are we no?"

"If that's yer wish," Caden replied, leaving the room and shutting the door behind him.

He was almost embarrassed at the relief he felt, knowing at least part of his life would continue as he'd always hoped. He would have Dun Ard to live for.

And as for his own heir?

Just as Blane had said, Drew and Colin would marry and have sons. He would simply have to wait and watch to see what time would bring.

Wonderful Medieval Scottish Time Travel!
By D. Merrimon Crawford
In present day Prairieland, Texas, Ellie Denton's life has become more than complicated. Ray Stanton, her mother's ex-husband, is back in town trying to steal the family ranch out from under her. Ellie's gift with animals takes on an unusual twist when the animals start talking back to her. If that alone wasn't enough to upend her world, a simple wish for true love and an escape turns all too real when faerie magic transports her back to 14th century Scotland. Caden MacAlister has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Responsible for his family as well as the welfare of the land, Caden does not need a woman complicating his life, especially not one sent by the Fae! He has already experienced the kind of complications this kind of magic brings. Convinced she must be sent for one of his brothers, he now must protect her while trying to rescue a brother held for ransom. Ellie Denton, however, might just be exactly the kind of complication he needs if only he can learn to trust her and open his heart.

A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a lot of light-hearted fun. A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN has a contemporary tone set by the delightful modern personality of the heroine now faced with a strange medieval setting. Told mostly through the heroine's point of view, A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a wonderful mix of humor, fantasy and emotion. In addition, Melissa Mayhue creates a rich depth of character in her portrayal of Caden, allowing the reader to see the inner conflicts of the medieval hero though his point of view. She peers into his heart. Melissa Mayhue does an excellent job of bridging the two different time periods, not only in the description of the time travel itself but also in the hero and heroine's interactions and in showing those things that men and women of all ages have in common. The Texas backdrop and some comments the heroine makes about cowboys as she is faced with a different world (the medieval one) before her are priceless. Medieval enthusiasts in particular will appreciate Melissa Mayhue's portrayal of the hero and the contrast between the hero and heroine. Although Melissa Mayhue brings together a modern woman and a medieval hero, she does not use one as a foil for the other but rather treats each with a vision that sees into the character of both. In many ways, the medieval world view allows Ellie a certain freedom and opportunity to grow as an individual through love and also within herself as an individual. Ellie's ability to talk to dogs and animals adds humor while also creating a soft spot for her sense of compassion and boldness. Melissa Mayhue never uses the heroine's unusual connection to animals or the faerie magic as a mere plot devise or shortcut to make things just happen or make the hero and heroine do things without developing as characters. Instead, she fully integrates both aspects within the very fabric of her tale.

As Ellie and Caden are drawn together through a dangerous suspenseful subplot, the light tone of the romance changes in one brutal scene towards the end. In view of this, readers only wanting only light moments in a romance should be forewarned. Nevertheless, this moment is where Melissa Mayhue truly shows her skill. Here, everything so carefully built up beforehand comes together emotionally and in terms of plot and characterization. In my opinion, removing this scene would be detrimental to the depth of the romance. The ending is superb! The resolution adds several new twists. When faerie magic, love and determination combine, all things are possible!

Although fourth in the Daughters of the Glen series, A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN works as a stand-alone romance. Melissa Mayhue gives just enough inkling to let the reader know the history behind the other romances in the series, but not so much that this book gets bogged down with past books. A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN leaves new readers feeling satisfied rather than as an outsider trying to catch up with a series. Nevertheless, I certainly have a keen interest in discovering more about the hero's past after having met him in this book. Here in the fourth book, Melissa Mayhue handles the series aspect exquisitely with a fine balance between revitalizing the series itself with a new tale for lovers of series while also creating a romance that feels complete in and of itself for new readers --- but with just enough intrigue to make the past of the fictional world intrigue.

Melissa Mayhue's A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a wonderful medieval time travel romance! A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN is a romance that will appeal to a wide range of readers with its historical setting, contemporary heroine and magical atmosphere. Medieval enthusiasts will find a special delight in Melissa Mayhue's medieval world. For medieval lovers, the humor is even richer as Melissa Mayhue captures so perfectly the complications and delights of both the modern woman and the fascination with the medieval world.

Fantastic read!
By sydjulia22
This was a fantastic novel. I love that it had a strong plot in addition to passionate romance. To many times I have read a paranormal romance and found the plot lines absolutely laughable, corny and not worth reading. This series of books is excellent (all of them)! Most of the books I have read in the paranormal genre have been vampire romances, these were such a refreshing change for me. I highly recommend all The Daughters of the Glen books.

My Ear at His Heart: Reading My Father, by Hanif Kureishi

Described in a recent "New York Times Magazine "profile as a "postcolonial Philip Roth," Hanif Kureishi first captured the attention of audiences and critics in the 1980s with the award-winning novel "The Buddha of Suburbia "and the films "My Beautiful Laundrette "and "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid." In three decades of acclaimed work, Kureishi has written fiction and films exploring a series of interconnected themes about identity and desire--from Islamic radicalism to kinky sex, and from psychoanalysis to the relationships of fathers and sons. After discovering an abandoned manuscript of his father's, hidden for years, Kureishi was compelled to turn his "unflinching perspective" ("Time Out") onto his own history. Like Roth, Martin Amis and Geoffrey Wolfe, who also have written books about their fathers, Kureishi wanted to understand and perhaps to reconcile.

"My Ear at His Heart "offers remarkable insight into the birth of a writer, chronicling how Kureishi's own literary calling emerged from the ashes of his father's aspirations. And so begins a journey that takes Kureishi through his father's privileged childhood by the sea in Bombay, through the turbulent birth of Pakistan and to his modest adult life in England--his days spent as a civil servant, his nights writing prose, hopeful of one day receiving literary recognition.

"A beguiling and complex tale of fact, fiction and family tensions" ("The Guardian"), "My Ear at His Heart "was published to great acclaim in the United Kingdom in 2004 and went on to win the prestigious Prix France Culture Etranger. Now, this profound work from one of the most compelling artists of our time is at last available in a Scribner edition.

From Booklist
Kureishi has long found inspiration for his art in the experiences and personalities of his family. This has occasionally gotten him in trouble; Intimacy (1998), his account of a man leaving his wife and children, was autobiographical enough to unnerve some critics, and Something to Tell You (2008) incited his sister Yasmin to pen an editorial entitled “Keep Me out of Your Novels” in London’s Independent. With this memoir, Kureishi lays bare the author’s knotty relationship with his late father, a Pakistani immigrant who worked his life away as a bureaucrat yet spent his evenings trying (ultimately unsuccessfully) to write novels based on his life. It is the discovery of one such unpublished novel that occasions this book. Afforded the ambiguous opportunity to peer into his father’s psyche through his literary imagination, Kureishi attempts to parse fact from fiction as he exposes his father’s conflicted relationship with his own parents, as well as his formative sexual escapades. But a second found novel deals with resentment of his children and stirs up deep Oedipal ambivalence. Part reconciliation, part vindication, this messy yet honest book is among Kureishi’s best. --Brendan Driscoll

Review
"A riveting piece of textual detective work . . . A moving and fiercely honest book."

--The Guardian (U.K.)

"It is family memoir, autobiography and cultural history combined. . . . With what

feels like unmitigated honesty Kureishi successfully conveys the impression that in

this book he has actually given us himself." --The Sunday Times (London)

About the Author
Hanif Kureishi won the prestigious Whitbread Prize for The Buddha of Suburbia and was twice nominated for Oscars for best original screenplay (My Beautiful Laundrette and Venus, which starred Peter O’Toole). In 2010 Kureishi received the prestigious PEN/Pinter Prize. He lives in London.

The Pritikin Edge: 10 Essential Ingredients for a Long and Delicious Life, by Dr. Robert A. Vogel, Paul Tager Lehr

We Americans may reside in the greatest nation on earth, but our lifestyle is killing us. Onequarter of us still smoke, two-thirds of us are fat, three-quarters of us don't exercise, and stress and depression are ubiquitous. We wolf down oversize portions of fast food in minutes and boast of not having taken a vacation in years. We get misinformation like "olive oil is healthy" but then get fatter because drizzling three tablespoons of oil on a salad adds as many calories as two scoops of premium ice cream. Despite all our advances in drugs and surgery, obesity and the diseases it causes have shortened life expectancy; this is the first time in history that children can expect to die younger than their parents.

The Pritikin Program was the first comprehensive lifestyle program in America, and after fifty years on the cutting edge of lifestyle science, it is still the longest-running, most successful program for reversing many of modern society's diseases, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. What sets Pritikin apart from the myriad of other diets is that its program is based on real science. Pritikin doesn't make random claims or base advice on half-truths or fads; Pritikin's effectiveness has been proven and documented in more than 110 scientific studies.

You've picked up this book because you want to change your lifestyle, improve your health, and live longer, and with the program in these pages, you can start reversing the effects of years of unhealthy living today.

Here you'll find the ten simple lifestyle ingredients that will change your life. Stick with them and you'll lose weight without feeling hungry, your energy will surge, and you will look and feel healthier and stronger than you have in years. Included are more than 75 recipes for flavorful and healthful dishes, detailed meal plans, and tips for dining out healthfully and happily. You'll learn what kinds of physical activities are most effective and how to make the most of your time on the road or in the gym. You'll get sets of simple exercises you can do anywhere that will make you strong, help you shed fat, and keep you toned. The real science of lifestyle and heart health, from fat molecules to heart attacks, is described in accessible terms, and popular diet myths are debunked. You'll find out why lowcarbohydrate or other fad diets won't help you lose weight in the long run and why they won't improve your overall health.

The Pritikin Edge gives you the real facts so you can take control of your health and add years to your life and quality to your years. Once you begin living with these principles, you'll wonder how you ever lived any other way.

Lifestyle and Heart Disease

You know Bill. At 58 years old, a strapping six feet two inches tall and 220 pounds with a full head of silver hair, he was outwardly the picture of power and health. He received great medical care. He jogged and golfed frequently. But just like most Americans, Bill loved food -- especially fatty, spicy, salty food. His typical American extra pounds pushed his blood pressure, sugar, and LDL (bad) cholesterol too high and dropped his HDL (good) cholesterol too low. He lived with chronic stress, big time. None of his numbers were awful, but every warning sign was there.

One day Bill had chest pain. The next week, his quadruple coronary bypass was all over the news, because Bill is President Bill Clinton. Yes, even American presidents can get heart disease. Since his wake-up call, Mr. Clinton has changed his lifestyle quite a bit. He is now off the ribs and fries and is working hard to do his part to prevent heart disease in this country.

Improving your lifestyle after a heart attack or bypass surgery is certainly a step in the right direction, but wouldn't it be so much better to do so before you end up in the coronary care unit or surgical suite? Or worse, the morgue? Our guests at the Pritikin Longevity Center sometimes complain that they don't have enough time to exercise. We remind them that they will have plenty of time to exercise, but not much inclination after they are dead.

Heart disease is a great barometer of a lousy lifestyle. Wherever heart disease is epidemic, so are obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, and diabetes. Obviously, few people are heeding the early warning signs, because I don't know any fellow cardiologists looking for more work. We live in fear of cancer, but heart disease is still the number-one killer in America. I wish I could tell you how to avoid most cancers. Sadly, I can't. But I can tell you how to prevent most heart disease simply by changing your lifestyle. Some cancers may even be avoided by these same lifestyle changes. What you eat, how often you exercise, how you manage your stress...it all matters, and it's all easier to improve than you might think.

THE 10 ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS OF THE PRITIKIN PROGRAM

In this book, you will learn the 10 essential ingredients of the Pritikin Program. These 10 Pritikin essentials deal with diet, exercise, and emotional wellness. By adopting these lifestyle practices, as thousands of our patients and participants have, you will get back the seven years of life you might otherwise lose to heart disease. (By the way, if seven years doesn't seem important to you right now, imagine how much more important they will seem to you when you're 75.) You will learn how to lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, to cook really tasty, heart-healthy food, the best ways to be physically active, and how to sidestep stress. You will learn the real science of lifestyle and heart health, so that you are able to make choices every single day that will contribute to your wellness and enable you to live a long, delicious life.

You'll learn much more in Part Two about the specifics of the 10 essential ingredients of the Pritikin Program, but here is a quick glance:

1. Healthy, satisfying eating starts with super salads, soups, whole grains, and fruit.
2. Eliminate high-calorie beverages.
3. Trim portions of calorie-dense foods.
4. Snack smarter.
5. Forget fast food; dine unrefined.
6. Watch less, walk more.
7. Go lean on meat, but catch a fish.
8. Shake your salt habit.
9. Don't smoke your life away.
10. Step around stress.

Adopting one or two of these essential lifestyle practices is okay, but optimal health requires that you follow the whole program. Why? Because obesity, inactivity, heart disease, and emotions are intricately connected. Couch potatoes tend to be depressed; depressed people eat more; people who eat more gain weight; those who gain weight tend to sack out on the couch rather than exercise; lack of exercise contributes to heart disease; heart disease can trigger depression...you get the picture. You may already be following several lifestyle essentials, but now is your chance to complete the program and get all seven years back, not to mention being able to more fully enjoy your life right here and now.

THE PRITIKIN PHILOSOPHY

The Pritikin Program is simple, thorough, and most of all, smart. No gimmicks, fads, pseudo-science, or rhetoric here. The philosophy is based on five main points:

• prevented through lifestyle changes.
• Emotional wellness and heart healthiness are intricately connected.
• Wellness is much more than the absence of illness.
• Complex health problems do not have simple solutions.
• Illness and wellness are global issues: they affect families, communities, and nations.

Lifestyle Changes versus Medication

I love sushi. Almost every day while we had a sushi bar in our hospital, I would eat ahi along with a green salad. One day, without notice, the sushi bar disappeared; it seems it wasn't making the hospital money. After all, why lose money selling tasty food that just might prevent heart disease when you can get paid a great deal to treat it? Sayonara, sushi bar. Did I complain? You bet! Now it's back.

This story illustrates the paradox of our unhealthy culture and medical care. When we become ill, we immediately turn to drugs to fix the consequences of a poor lifestyle. We focus on fixing a problem after we've created it, rather than trying to prevent it altogether.

Pop a pill, or hop on the treadmill -- which is easier? Taking a pill, of course. Which is better? Hands down, preventing the illness that mandates the pill in the first place through healthy living. When we change our lifestyle, we not only negate the need for costly medications, we lessen our risk of developing a myriad of diseases, including diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and depression, not to mention heart disease, because these common afflictions share many of the same root causes.

I readily admit I will use medications in my practice to lower cholesterol in patients who will not change their lifestyle or for whom this change is not enough. But time and again, I've seen that my patients who do lower their cholesterol through diet and exercise rather than medication look and feel better. Yes, they have to put in a little more time and effort than it takes to pry the top off a pill bottle, but the quality of their lives is far superior. They are more physically fit, emotionally engaged, and energized by their ability to improve their well-being.

Prescriptions or Power Walks? Consider This:

• Most lifestyle changes are free, or very inexpensive. Salads are still cheaper than any prescription drug.
• You don't need preapproval from an HMO to go for a long walk.
• Lifestyle changes have few negative side effects. You don't have to worry about mixing good habits, and I have never had a patient allergic to walking.
• The most valuable lifestyle changes have no drug substitutes. As yet, we have not been able to capture all the benefits of friendship and love in a pill.

Emotions and Heart Disease

Our metaphorical "heart," from which we feel love and affection, and our physical heart are actually one and the same. How you feel can absolutely affect your cardiovascular health. As we like to say at Pritikin, a happy life equals a happy heart.

Depressed people tend to eat poorly, smoke more frequently, and exercise rarely -- all major contributors to heart disease. There is a lot of research that shows depression and anger increase the chronic factors that contribute to heart disease, most specifically inflammation and a decrease in protective chemicals like nitric oxide (more on this in Chapter 2). And, not surprisingly, the relationship works both ways: depression and anger frequently follow heart attacks and bypass surgery.

Can you die of a broken heart? Absolutely. Faced with sudden emotional stress, your heart can actually stop pumping effectively. Learning about the death or illness of a loved one can do it; this is literally called "broken heart syndrome." In response to extreme stress or grief, an outpour of adrenaline and related hormones can stun the heart, mimicking a heart attack.

Fortunately, though, the same holds true in reverse. Upbeat emotions and heart healthiness are also intricately connected. It has been proven that watching 30 minutes of a humorous video relaxes your blood vessels. Socially and spiritually connected people, such as churchgoers and others who are socially active, tend to live healthier lifestyles and thus experience less heart disease. In one of the best-known studies of cardiac health, the Normative Aging Study done in VA hospitals, it was shown that optimistic men actually have few heart attacks.

There's another component to the link between emotions and heart health: think about how your self-image improves with weight loss and the joy of shopping for slimmer clothes. I know of few compliments more welcome in our society than being told that you look like you lost weight. (By the way, I've come to learn that the only correct answer to your wife's question of whether a dress makes her look fat is, "How could it, dear?")

Wellness versus Absence of Illness

Just like illness, health and wellness come in degrees. You may not be ill, but can you run a 6-minute mile -- or even a 12-minute mile? You may not be depressed, but are you truly happy? You may not have had a heart attack or stroke yet, but do you really think that all those double cheeseburgers and French fries have not done you any damage?

We call heart disease the silent killer. You usually feel fine the day before a heart attack or stroke, but you are really a coronary time bomb. Did you know that 85 percent of 50-year-old people have blockage in the arteries of their hearts without any symptoms? It is a traged...

Must read - add years to your life
By Susan
Pritikin simply works.
It is amazing how easy it is to follow.
Loved the book - it changed my life.
For once a eating plan -not a fad diet - that makes sense and is easy to follow. I wish this was required reading in our schools - it is the answer to our obesity epidemic.
Only goes to show: Beyond all the hype is common sense.
Well written and very clear, easy to understand.

Helpful information, even for healthy young people, Terrible recipes
By HMarten
I found a lot of helpful information in this book. Heart disease is explained in a clear manner, and this book is an easy read because the author is so darn funny. I have so many favorite lines from this book. I was seriously cracking up while I read the book (and read it in a day off work, btw--very fast read). I do not follow everything to a T--I still salt my food, but I use less salt and I use almost no prepackaged food at all. I do look at sodium content now. I also buy reduced fat cheese, too. Pritikin suggests nonfat cheese, though. I would feel deprived if I followed all of the diet ideas perfectly. Instead, I look at my healthy vegetarian diet through new eyes and see where I can make it healthier, but still satisfying and delicious. My husband appreciated that Pritikin is scientifically based and has so many studies done on it. One caveat--I am not a fan of the recipes. I'd rather not eat than eat awful food! I am very picky, though. And I'm not a fan of fat and sugar substitutes--I say just use less of the real thing!

great book, giving common sense solutions to health problems
By MaryAnn G.
This is a great book, giving a common sense solution to cure today's health problems through subtle lifestyle changes. If everyone would follow the advice in this book our country would not have an obesity, diabetes, and heart disease epidemic.
I found it an easy read, not boring as most health guides seem to be, this book kept my interest and made it look simple to lead a healthy life style.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to live longer and not fear heart attacks.
