The six year old Angela looks at the naked baby Jesus in her local church in Limerick, Ireland, circa 1912, and thinks he looks cold. She wonders why his mother, or one of the shephards, doesn't put a blanket over him. She decides to take him to her bedroom and wrap him in her own blanket. The journey home is a bit difficult and when the disappearance is discovered, the whole parish is very, very upset. But Angela does carry the baby back to church, and all turns out well.

Usually little Angela would want to be right in the middle of the action as the family sits by the fire and talks. But not this time--she has a secret upstairs.

At this point in the story, I'm giving the reader a seat behind the family in the shadows away from the fire. At the same time we, the readers, know about Angela's secret in the bedroom upstairs and we see her hanging back from the others, sneaking peeks up the staircase. We can see that she has something more important on her mind than her family's chattering.

In my visual interpretation of Angela and the Baby Jesus, I wanted to tap into Frank McCourt's sophisticated blend of gritty realism and subtle humor. For this reason, I specifically chose a limited color palette. I worked with acrylics on canvas and tried to keep the paintings a bit edgy and raw.

Choosing images came naturally when working on this story. I was taken with the balance of reverence, innocence, and humor in Frank’s text and I simply tried to come up with creative ways to portray these elements in a subtle but hopefully profound way. --Loren Long

This image for Frank McCourt's Angela and the Baby Jesus picture book came to me just by thinking of a warm fireplace on a cold night.

In this particular scene the family sits around the fire to chat after tea. Angela's little brother is giving up the secret that the "Baby Jesus" is in the bed upstairs. Angela shows a bit of worry in her face, since she quietly snuck the "baby" into the house. Surely she'll be in trouble now.

Throughout the story I hardly show any of the adult faces, focusing mainly on the children's world. Hence, Mother's back is turned toward us. I also cut off the little brother's face by having Mother's turn-of-the-century hairdo get in the way (A little thing I learned from the great artist Degas.) It gives the scene intimacy, as if the viewer is there taking a snapshot with his camera. All in all a fun and rewarding book to illustrate. It was an honor to turn McCourt's words into actual pictures. --Raul Colon

About the Author
Frank McCourt (1930-2009) was born in in Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents, grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and returned to America in 1949. For thirty years he taught in New York City high schools. His first book, Angela's Ashes, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the L.A. Times Book Award. In 2006, he won the prestigious Ellis Island Family Heritage Award for Exemplary Service in the Field of the Arts and the United Federation of Teachers John Dewey Award for Excellence in Education.

Loren Long illustrated President Barack Obama’s Of Thee I Sing; the newest version of The Little Engine that Could; Madonna’s second picture book, Mr. Peabody’s Apples; and the Barnstormers series. He also illustrated Frank McCourt's Angela and the Baby Jesus and is part of the Design Garage for Jon Scieszka’s Trucktown series. Poor ending to this to this otherwise interesting book.

I LOVE Frank McCourt's books. There is no story more emotionally riveting and profound than "Angela's Ashes". I just wish his newer books had better endings. This most recent book just dwindles away at the end. I was waiting for something more, and it merely dropped off. Frank is truly the best story teller of our lifetime. I hope he writes many more books about Ireland.

A Tale From Angela

Written by Frank McCourt, ANGELA AND THE BABY JESUS is a retelling of a true story that McCourt's mother relayed to him about an event she was involved in as a child. There are two editions of the story, a children's version and an adult version. The children's version is filled with more illustrations. This review is focused on the adult version of the book that has illustrations by Loren Long.

Little seven-year-old Angela sees the baby Jesus alone in the manger at church and decides that he must get cold laying where he is and decides to take him home and warm him up. However, it's not an easy task as one might think.

I love McCourt's writing and I am thankful to him for sharing about his life and now an episode from the life of his mother. McCourt's books are very sad and full of dark humor. However, ANGELA AND THE BABY JESUS isn't quite like that. There is some humor involved, but overall it's a heartwarming story full of the love, joy, and peace that surround the Christmas season.

With England and France at war, spymaster Cuthbert Shy asks Finch to befriend U.S. envoys in Paris, to foster "disagreement, confusion, and enmity" between France and America and plant the seeds for an alliance with Britain, to whom the Americans are bound by "ties of kinship, language, history, and temperament." Shy insists that she keep this vital mission secret even from her significant other, Capt. Robert Holland, though Holland himself winds up across the Channel to look into reports that the French have invented an undersea weapon whose tests have led to reports of sea monsters. Melikan successfully captures the spirit of the period while rooting her suspenseful espionage plot in actual events.

In the Shadow of the French Revolution

In this third book of the adventures of Miss Mary Finch, heiress, and Captain Robert Holland, Army engineer and occasional adventurer, intelligence agent Sir Cuthbert Shy recruits a restless Mary to perform her most dangerous mission yet: she is to pretend she is the wife of an ex-patriot American painter and travel to Paris, a Paris in the wake of the Revolution and patrolled by menacing French officers eager to send any supporters of royalists to the guillotine, to keep the French from forming an alliance with the Americans against the British, as well as to persuade the Americans that a British alliance would be best. At the same time, Holland has had troubling news of a new weapon, a boat that travels underwater which could cause calamity to British shipping. He also infiltrates France, knowing nothing of Mary's mission.

Needless to say, the two meet, sparks fly--and they must then race to complete their respective missions in time to escape France before the gendarmes discover what they're up to. In the meantime, a faithful friend of Mary's preserves the illusion she's in England--but will the secret be kept, especially when a well-meaning friend of Mary's arrives for a visit?

Based on two historical events, "the XYZ affair" and Robert Fulton's invention of a submarine, the suspense builds slowly until it's almost too late. A great combination of history and suspense, with two charming, resourceful heroes who don't slobber over each other, and several memorable supporting characters, including the majordomo of the home Mary rents in London, the flamboyant Nazarian.

Drawn out

After reading the first book in this series, The Blackstone Key I had high hopes. That vanished when I read the second book, The Counterfeit Guest. What a letdown. This third book in the series is somewhere in between. Its not a bad book, but it doesn't have the charm of the first book. I don't mind a bit of historical drama but I thought this was a tad drawn out and a little bit of passion between the main characters, Mary Finch and Captain Holland wouldn't go astray. Unfortunately I don't care enough about either of them to read a fourth book.

An unexpectedly, racy historical romance

This 3rd novel in this trilogy brings the story to wonderful conclusion. This was my first experience reading a historical romance book, if that is the correct genre for this book. There are a multitude of thrills, laughs and beautiful descriptions to keep the readers of all genres happy. The reader is transported to the era in which the story is set, with such ease. One can't help falling in love with the main character, Ms Mary Finch.

The German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, began a war that lasted nearly four years and created by far the bloodiest theater in World War II. In the conventional narrative of this war, Hitler was defeated by Stalin because, like Napoleon, he underestimated the size and resources of his enemy. In fact, says historian John Mosier, Hitler came very close to winning and lost only because of the intervention of the western Allies. Stalin’s great triumph was not winning the war, but establishing the prevailing interpretation of the war. The Great Patriotic War, as it is known in Russia, would eventually prove fatal, setting in motion events that would culminate in the collapse of the Soviet Union.Deathride argues that the Soviet losses in World War II were unsustainable and would eventually have led to defeat. The Soviet Union had only twice the population of Germany at the time, but it was suffering a casualty rate more than two and a half times the German rate. Because Stalin had a notorious habit of imprisoning or killing anyone who brought him bad news (and often their families as well), Soviet battlefield reports were fantasies, and the battle plans Soviet generals developed seldom responded to actual circumstances. In this respect the Soviets waged war as they did everything else: through propaganda rather than actual achievement. What saved Stalin was the Allied decision to open the Mediterranean theater. Once the Allies threatened Italy, Hitler was forced to withdraw his best troops from the eastern front and redeploy them. In addition, the Allies provided heavy vehicles that the Soviets desperately needed and were unable to manufacture themselves. It was not the resources of the Soviet Union that defeated Hitler but the resources of the West. In this provocative revisionist analysis of the war between Hitler and Stalin, Mosier provides a dramatic, vigorous narrative of events as he shows how most previous histories accepted Stalin’s lies and distortions to produce a false sense of Soviet triumph. John Mosier is a professor of English at Loyola University in New Orleans. He is the author of four books of military history: The Myth of the Great War, The Blitzkrieg Myth, The Generalship of U. S. Grant, and Cross of Iron. He has appeared on the BBC, Fox News, the History Channel, Sky News, and Comcast. An active film critic, he has written over one hundred articles on film for Kino, Americas, Variety, and the New Orleans Arts Review. He lives in Jefferson, Louisiana. While he has been seen performing over one hundred of them in theater and film, Michael is primarily heard, having recorded well over five hundred full-length books. Questioning the standard narrative of Stalin's Great Patriotic War.

This is a thought provoking book. Many of the earlier reviews are excellent and together provide an excellent summary of the main material covered in the book.
John Mosier starts with a strong, unconventional, contrarian and likely controversial premise: Stalin's and the Soviet's accounts of the Great Patriotic War are not to be trusted because of their systemic and pathological distortion of facts and the desire to create additional myths on the merits of Stalin's brand of socialism. Mosier argues that many Western military historians have not been sufficiently critical in their assessments and have relied too heavily on highly questionable Soviet sources of information on casualties and strategic and tactical accounts of major engagements. Mosier makes his case through detailed recounting of casualty rates and equipment loss rates. The astonishing disparity in casualties between the Wehrmacht and the Soviets seems to support this basic contention. The Soviet forces according to Mosier were poorly equipped, poorly trained, poorly maintained, poorly coordinated and, for the most part, poorly led. By comparison, Mosier sees the Wehrmacht as well equipped, well trained, well maintained, well-coordinated and, for the most part, well led.
In Mosier's view both Hitler and Stalin were totally ruthless, but Hitler's war strategy was more coherent while Stalin's was incredibly wasteful of lives and material. Mosier makes a strong case that Hitler's direction of the Eastern Front and his focus on strategic targets, notably the Baku oil fields, as opposed to major cities was militarily reasonable. The facts on the ground seem to support Hitler's notion of a war of attrition - it simply didn't happen fast enough and it could not be sustained once Hitler moved resources to the Western Front. Mosier argues that Hitler perceived the Allies as more of a threat to his ability to wage war than were the Russians presumably because of the relative proximity of the Ruhr and industrial areas to any Allied invasion and the sheer distance and his reasonable perception that the Soviets could be defeated readily if the Allies were thrown back. Hitler gambled and lost.
My major criticisms of the book are Mosier's awkward writing style, the repetitiveness of the arguments, the frequent sidetracks and the absence of maps especially for major battles like Kursk.
All in all, it is a thought provoking read that forces the reader to reassess what he thinks he knows about the true nature of Stalin's and the Soviets' contribution to defeating Hitler.

Very useful new historical amplifications

This is clearly a book for specialists, as is indicated by the many comments of those who have obviously studied WW II in Eastern Europe in great depth. I am not expert, and my past study is rusty. It does seem, however, that many of the author's ideas have great credibility and benefit greatly from information available since the fall of the Soviet Union. I have always believed that if Germany had breached the Leningrad Moscow Stalingrad line, they could have won the war. Stalingrad was a near miss, due to Paulus not being among the great German generals. It is fascinating that Kursk was allegedly not won because Hitler pulled his punches due to fears of Allied activities in Western Europe. Something else: if Germany was on the ropes after 1943, why did Russians suffer such massive casualties all the way into Berlin in 1945? Carried forward from past histories is the truth that Russia might well have lost except for massive support from the west--especially a flood of trucks (only 10-14% extra can easily turn the tide in war). And, maybe the T-34 was not as great as advertised. I have believed for many years that, like Waterloo, WW II in Eastern Europe was a "very close thing." The author might be entirely correct that accurate history before the fall of the Soviet Union was difficult, and perhaps subject to too great an acceptance of Stalin's propaganda during and after the war. Of course the average American today sadly doesn't know the difference between WW I and WW II, and I'm sure this excellent book will not be a best seller because of its very specialized nature--made more difficult for beginners for the reason I gave it only 4 stars: extreme paucity of maps, lists and charts--vital to understanding military history. Finally, there was some suggestion that the author is too sympathetic to Germany, but I think his admiration is for the military greatness of Germany's armed services in WW II rather than any political point of view. One of the great tragedies of history is that evil is not necessarily incompetent.

DEAD MEN

Every story has a beginning. Mine is in Washington, D.C., in 1969.

Washington, D.C., in the sixties, seventies, and eighties was one of the poorest places in the country. Murder was common. Crack cocaine was just getting its start. Life expectancy for kids was worse than in many third world countries. The politicians were corrupt, homelessness was at its peak, and even lawabiding people viewed the police as the enemy.

But to me, it was home.

I won't say I was unaffected by the poverty and crime around me when I grew up. It's not like I lived on a safe cul-de-sac around the corner from the ghetto, either: three people died at different times in my front yard before I was nine. But to me, D.C. wasn't the life-sucking hellhole it was for a lot of people. And the big reason for that was my mom.

FAMILY

I was born January 18, 1969.

For some strange reason, the date is a big controversy in the wrestling world. At some point very early in my career, someone wrote a story somewhere saying that I had been born in 1966. That year seems to have stuck with a lot of people for some reason. There have been other dates published, too. There have been so many, in fact, that when I give the right date, some people think I'm lying about my age.

I swear to God, it's like it's a big deal.

Just last week some guy told my girlfriend I was lying about my age, that I wasn't really thirty-eight, that I was forty-two. Maybe he was trying to pick her up, I don't know.

I don't lie about my birth date -- I try not to lie about anything, but especially not that. It's no secret that I came to the business really late. I was almost thirty when I got into wrestling. That's real old for a wrestler starting out. I never lied about my age then, so it would be really crazy to lie now. And if I was going to lie about my age, I wouldn't say I was thirty-eight. I'd knock at least five more years off.

I have a sister, who was born about a year later than I was. Our parents weren't very original when it came to naming us. I was named after my father, David Michael Bautista. I'm Dave Junior.My sister was named after my mother, Donna Raye Bautista. She's a junior, too. It made it easier for people to remember our names.

(I spell my name Batista for wrestling, but on my birth certificate it has a u after the first a.)

My father was born in Washington,D.C., but his family was from the Philippines, and as a wrestler I've always felt a strong bond with the fans in the Philippines because of that family connection. His father, my granddad, was in the army; he didn't talk much about what he did, but I know he was in World War II and was wounded or hurt in some way. The family legends have him down as a hell-raiser when he was young, but I don't know much more than that.

I always heard that he was a real ladies' man, and that he got into some trouble in San Francisco when he was younger. Supposedly he was running numbers for gangsters and did something for which, for some reason or another, they wanted to kill him.Whatever it was that he did, trouble chased him out of town and he came east.

Those bad days were long gone by the time I came along, and he never told me about them, even though I was his favorite and he wasn't afraid to show it. On the contrary: he used to brag about it.

According to the family stories, my grandfather would never really hold any of my cousins or me when we were babies. He wasn't the nurturing type. But then one day my mom had to run to grab something burning or something like that and she just threw me in my grandfather's arms. His face lit up. By the time she came back to get me, he and I had bonded somehow. From that day, I was his favorite grandchild. I still remember him asking how much I loved him and holding my hands out to say, "This much!"

When he died in 1988, it just broke my heart. He's buried in Arlington Cemetery, an honor reserved for men and women who have served our country.

My grandfather had a bunch of jobs in the Washington, D.C., area, but I only knew him as a barber. He had his own shop in Oxen Hill, Maryland, an old-fashioned place with four chairs in it. He had to be one of the most popular guys in the neighborhood. Everybody knew him. You'd go into a McDonald's with him or just walk down the block and everyone would say hello. He was very friendly and very well liked.

He was also a very generous grandfather. When I was around six or seven, we lived real close to the shop, maybe a few blocks away. I'd go into the shop and sit in his chair, just hanging out. He'd give me lollipops all day. My cousin Anthony, who was a little older than me, would stop by, too. Sometimes, my grandfather would give us a few bucks and we'd go to Toys "R" Us. It was right across the street.

It was funny. For a while we had a regular little scam going, me and my cousin. We'd buy the toys and play with them; then, after we got a little tired of them, we'd break them and take them back.

"This toy's broken," we'd tell them.

So they'd take them back on exchange and we'd get more toys.

Anthony and I were close while we were growing up, very close. He was my only male relative in my generation, and for a while I lived with him, his sister, and their parents. So that made him the closest thing I had to a brother as a kid. He could be a bully sometimes, like any older brother. Nothing too serious: he would tease me until I cried, things like that. But I still loved him. I always looked up to him and wanted to be like him.

Unfortunately, he died a few years ago in a terrible car accident. It really shook up the family. I still miss him.

LESBIAN AND DEMOCRAT

My mom's father, Kenneth Mullins, was in the service, too. He was in the Marines during the Korean War and got both the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Both of my grandfathers were men to look up to and feel proud of, because of their service to our country.

I was never very close to the Greek side of my family, mostly because my mother wasn't. But she still tells the story of how when I was born, all of her Greek relatives came over to visit. They started yelling when they saw me: "He's Greek! He's Greek!"

They were all happy and proud, pointing out this and that facial feature that they said was due to Greek genes.

Of course, the Filipino side of the family was there, and they got pretty upset. They claimed I looked more Filipino than Greek.

My mother calls herself the black sheep of her family. She was always a lot more liberal than her parents: Granddad was a conservative, she was a left-wing Democrat. After she and my father separated, she fell in love with a woman. At some point, her father caught her in bed with another woman, which was how he first found out that she was a lesbian. I think she may regret that a little bit, but she and her dad have gotten closer over the years, and I know there's a lot of love between them now. She still jokes, though, that she did two things that disappointed her father: told him that she was a Democrat, and told him that she was a lesbian.

"Of the two, being a Democrat was far, far worse," she says. "Not even close as far as he was concerned."

My mother's sexual orientation was never an issue for me. She made it clear that she loved my sister and me, and there was never any doubt in my mind about that.

THE GONG SHOW

My father was a different story.

He and my mom had been high school sweethearts and got married right out of school.They were both really young. I don't know exactly what happened, but it seems clear to me that my father wasn't ready to be a father. They did try, on and off, to get together and get back together. Some of those attempts were halfhearted. But I don't really remember them sharing affection, hugging or kissing or anything like that.

I remember us all watching The Gong Show together. That was about the extent of family togetherness for my mom and dad.

In all the years after my parents split up, basically since I was able to walk, I never felt that my father supported us.

My mother says now, "You can't get blood from a stone."

I don't know about that. It seemed to me he was making a pretty good living at the time, and we just lived in a dump.We had nothing. I always felt something was wrong with that.

We recently talked for the first time in, let me see, over ten years. But it was really awkward. I felt as if I'd been forced into talking to him. Things are still hard between us. I don't really think he ever wanted to be a father. He told me recently that he never knew how to be a father. That was fuckin' obvious. But he could have taken a better shot at it.

He said it made him sad that we hadn't talked in a long while and didn't have any contact. I told him that it didn't make me sad. I didn't miss him. The reason I didn't miss him was that I never really felt like I had a father. I knew he was there, I knew he was my father, but I grew up without the feeling of having a father around. My mother played the role of mother and father, and she was what I knew and what I was used to. He was just never there. I really didn't miss him in my life because he was never there.

Made me a fan of WWE all over again

I've been a big fan of wrestling ever since I was a little kid. I grew up with characters like Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and The Undertaker. When the guys I grew up with slowly started to fade away I lose my interest in the WWE. For me, the new guys just didn't have the same "it" factor as the ones I grew up with.

It wasn't until the WWE started releasing books from their stars that my interest started to build again. When I was a kid there was no difference between the character these guys played on TV, and the person they were at home. I would've never dreamed that one day I'd be watching a TV show about Hulk Hogan...his wife....AND his kids?? No way.

Now that I'm a little older and understand the difference between the characters they play in the ring, and the real person they are, I've gained a new level of respect for the men and women of the WWE.

When Batista first came to the WWE he was all but entertaining. Since then I've watched his character grow and become World champion on numerous occasions. I had no idea he was releasing a book, and at first I was a bit skeptical about reading it because in the ring Batista isn't known for his overwhelming personality.

I gave in and purchased the book on Mon 10/22, and I've already finished it. Dave Batista (or Bautista)is actually an interesting, fairly deep guy with a lot of stories to share about his less than perfect past. His stories about growing up, bodybuilding, and life on the road actually had me laugh at loud at some points.

What I really enjoyed was that while Batista obviously had help in writing the book, at no time did I feel like I was reading someone else's words. The entire book made me believe that he actually sat down and wrote this which I can't really say about a lot of other biographies I've read. The book is candid, revealing, and very interesting. Personally, I couldn't put it down, and I would highly recommended it to anyone who's looking for an interesting book they can finish in a few days.

Even if you're not a fan of wrestling, the stories of Batista's life before he entered the ring are worth the purchase alone.

Excellent Bio of a Great Wrestler

I've never read any of the other books from any of the other wrestlers before, but I'm very glad I decided to get this one. I never knew all the difficulties and hard work it takes to be a wrestler, plus reading about Batistas personal struggles made it even better of a book to read. You really get the experience of this mans life and becoming the Animal. If your a fan of Batista or even just a fan of professional wrestling, this is one book to get.

a refreshingly original take on modern vampires in urban fantasy

Ciara Griffin is a con artist paying her way through college with her cons. Now however, she's trying to put that reputation behind her and start working a real job. Marketing intern to the owner of a local radio station, WMMP, sounds like just the ticket she's looking for. However, upon starting work, she learns her employers have a few surprises for her.

WMMP is floundering and Skywave, a giant communications company is trying to buy them out. WMMP has an eclectic late night lineup, covering each decade for about the 1940s/50s through the 90s and Ciara is in for the shock of her life when she learns a little secret the DJs are keeping. They are all vampires, permanently stuck in the years in which they were turned.

Ciara's has a brilliant marketing concept - revamp the station, changing the name to WVMP "The Lifeblood of Rock and Roll and have the vampires hide in plain sight, telling everyone they are vampires. After all, everyone knows vampires aren't real so no one will believe the truth. Unfortunately a local band of ancient vampires are none too keen on revealing their secret, ready to put an end to the radio station once and for all. Now, along with her new vampire friends, including one very hot DJ she'd love to get to know better, Ciara is neck deep in the Wicked Game to pull off the greatest con of her life.

Wow! Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready is a refreshingly original take on modern vampires in urban fantasy. From her unique concept on vampire society to the lively rock and roll radio station, this book is a breath of fresh air. The stakes are high as Ciara, and in turn the readers, learn why the radio station is so crucial to the vampires' survival. Add in not one but two groups of potential enemies in the form of vampire cult leader Gideon and The Control (a black ops military organization protecting good vampires and destroying bad ones) and tensions mount as circumstance grow more dire for Ciara and company.

I completely loved the idea of vampires stuck in their former "Life Time," making them unique from many other books out there, and even completely different from each other in the universe Jeri Smith-Ready has created. After all who can't appreciate the novelty of having a hippy, a Goth, and a grunger mixing it up with a classy 40's African American gentleman, a 50s/60s greaser, and a Rastafarian. Talk about lots of opportunity for amusement! As if that wasn't enough, I loved the characterization of the vampires, with more than one of them having developed some type of OCD behavior after their turning. I laughed out loud more than once over the antics. Watching a vampire trying to organize CDs and retrieving a whole container of spilled pencils being two of the more memorable scenes.

While all of the vampires and humans at WVMP are crucial to the story, the real star is Ciara. She has distanced herself from her con artist parents and is trying so hard to overcome her past. So it is rather ironic that the only way to save her life is to stage the biggest con she's ever tried. Ciara's heart of gold shines through even in the face of temptation and I can't help but lover her for her irrepressible spirit.

I so thoroughly enjoyed my extended visit to WVMP in Wicked Game and I can only hope Jeri Smith-Ready has more stories planned about those loveable vampires.

What would you do for a job?

Ciara Griffin has always lived for the con. Now she's trying to get her life straight and get a job in sales and marketing. A local radio station, WVMP, offers her a job, but there's a catch: the DJs are all vampires. These aren't ordinary vampires, however. Each DJ is stuck in the "Life Time" in which they died. Now a huge corporation wants to buy out WVMP. Will Ciara be able to play the con of her life in order to save WVMP? And what about her growing attraction to vampire Shane McAllister?

Jeri Smith-Ready is simply a master at creating vibrant characters, full of life! Ciara is a delight, with her old "con" nature tugging at her. Her wicked side constantly wars with her desire to do the right thing, making her all too human and very likable. Shane, too, has his darker side that he struggles against. Jeri Smith-Ready excels at showing growth in her characters as they encounter conflicts, both internal and external, and this is evident in WICKED GAME. Ciara and Shane will have to overcome their own inner struggles, as well as the threat of the corporate takeover, if they hope to succeed.

The tone of WICKED GAME is crucial to its success. The story has its darker moments as vampires are not portrayed as simply glamorous and sexy beings. No, Jeri Smith-Ready shows us their allure as well as their darker, blood driven side. However, there are touches of humor interspersed to keep the tone from becoming too intense. And who can resist a book that refers to humans as "sunnysides"?

WICKED GAME is a very clever twist on the vampire theme and one that left me hungering for a sequel. Jeri Smith-Ready has created a world populated with characters that I want to see more of. Regina, David, Jim... there are just so many avenues left to explore with all of these characters that I can only hope more books are on the way! If you haven't read a book by Jeri Smith-Ready, WICKED GAME is an excellent place to start as this is an author who consistently delivers quality stories.

Though entertaining at times, this book just didn't do it for me

Ciara Griffin is a con artist who is trying to put the past behind her. Ciara parents were two professional swindlers who taught her everything she knows. But now that her mother's behind bars and her father has disappeared, Ciara just wants to be like everyone else. She performs one last con--a big one--to get her enough money to pay for college, and then decides to become an honest woman. It's with this in mind that Ciara goes to an interview for a marketing internship at WMMP (which sounds disturbingly like wimp to her jaded ears). It seems that Ciara's past makes her a prime candidate for the position, but before she can start the job the general manager gives her some required reading that might help her get to know her coworkers a little better--and help her decide if she can hack it (no pun intended). The required reading is a field guide to vampires. Long story short, vampires are stuck in the life time in which they died. Time is basically standing still for them, and it can be difficult to adjust to modern times. Each of the DJs at WMMP is so good at what they do because they are still frozen in the time period of the music they play. Like Monroe, an African American who died in the 40's and has a blues program, or Shane, a grungy rocker who died in the mid-90's with a penchant for Nirvana and angst.

Ciara is initially skeptical and dismissive--she was raised on scams and she knows one when she sees it. But when one of the DJs (Shane) proves just how real vampires are by biting her, Ciara comes face to face with the harsh reality that everything is not as it seems. And when the station is threatened from a buyout by a corporate giant (think Empire Records (Remix! Special Fan Edition)), it's up to Ciara to come up with another con to keep them in business. Revamping the WMMPy name, Ciara comes up with WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock n Roll. She plans to out the DJs for what they are--vampires--and use this gimmick to convince listeners that this is why they're so in tune with the music they play. Her plan is a hit; at least until some other vampires decide they don't like having their truth broadcast over the airwaves. Suddenly Ciara, and the DJs, have more to worry about than preventing a takeover, they have to worry about keeping themselves alive.

Wicked Game was funny at times, but as a whole it just didn't do it for me. I just couldn't always generate the interest it took to read another page. In fact, I put it down several times while I read other things and only came back to it because I'm a person who finishes what she starts. I can't exactly pinpoint what it is that didn't work for me. I liked Ciara more than a lot of other romance heroines. I admired the fact that she knew when she was having a TSTL moment, and made the reader aware of it as well. It was a lot easier to tolerate than some simpering whiner who complains when bad things keep happening. And I liked Shane as the romantic interest, though I wished Ciara would quit stringing him along and make up her mind already. I think it's probably just that this book wasn't fast paced enough for me. Things moved slowly, and by the time there was a little action I couldn't really work up the motivation to care. Still, this book wasn't awful by any means. It had a lot of music trivia and some snappy dialogue, but it didn't balance out the uneven pacing and slow moments. I'd read another book by Jeri Smith-Ready, but I wouldn't pass this one on to a friend.

Years later I was looking through a box of memorabilia and noticed a silk-screened playbill of the musical Carousel, May, 1964, which listed me as a stagehand. The lead actress was Diane Hall. Something connected and I remembered that Diane Keaton's name was once Hall, (hence, Annie Hall). I confirmed with her that she was in that production. Neither of us remembers meeting the other, yet we must have worked in proximity. More evidence that I was a wallflower. Decades later, we ended up "making love" on the floor of a movie set on Father of the Bride.

On the Kennedy Assassination
One Friday in 1963, I had finished a class and was about to drive to Knott's Berry Farm for the afternoon shows when I saw a clump of agitated students across the campus. I asked someone what was going on. "They're saying that the president's been shot."

I drove across town to Knott's and punched radio buttons. I could hear the scheduled programs clicking off and being replaced by live broadcasts. Assassination seemed so ancient and inconceivable, I was sure that someone would soon correct the erroneous report. President Kennedy died that day and I didn't know that news could be taken so personally by a nation. Sitting backstage, watching the Birdcage's black-and-white TV drone out the increasingly grave report, we were all mute. We assumed the performance that night would be canceled, but as show time neared, word came down that we were going on. We couldn't fathom why; we believed no one would show up, much less enjoy us. I still can't explain the psychology, why the very full house that night was able to roar with laughter. The obvious must be correct: our silly show was providing some kind of balm that soothed the ache.

In 2003 I hosted the Oscars on the particular weekend that the United States invaded Iraq. The news was grim and just hours before the show I flipped on the TV and saw a report, subsequently proven false, that our captive soldiers were being beheaded. I quickly turned the TV off, sick. I knew, from my experience forty years earlier with the Kennedy assassination, what my job was, and I harbored a secret knowledge that the audience would laugh. I also felt that soldiers who might be watching would be tuning in to see the Oscars and all its hoopla, not a cheerless comedian doing what he doesn’t do best. I decided to acknowledge the circumstances early in the show and then get on with the jokes. The academy had announced that the show would "cut back on the glitz." I walked out for the opening monologue, took a look around the stage at the dazzling, swirling staircases, mirrored curtains and polished floor, and simply said, "I'm glad they cut back on the glitz." It got a laugh of relief and the show could go on.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a quarter century since Steve Martin packed the props and walked away from a stunningly successful turn in stand-up. His career as a popular actor, a critically lauded writer (Shopgirl), and a dramatist has since flourished, of course. But readers hoping for vintage Martin can get a quick fix with Born Standing Up. While the memoir may not be as salacious as fans expect or as riotously funny as an arrow through the head, Martin writes with the wisdom of experience (don’t miss a remarkable meeting with Elvis Presley after a 1971 show) as he recounts his development into one of the most popular and original comedians of his generation.

Not A Hollywood Tell-All But Rather A Sneak Peek Into The Hard Work Roller Coaster of a Professional Comedian

I bought the audio version with the e-version and it felt as if he walk speaking specifically to me. It gave it a much more intimate feel. I highly recommend the professional reading addition.

The book itself is a collections of stand-up memories and developmental notes on how Mr. Martin began his professional career as an onstage performer. It goes through a bit of the highs and low without going for the cheap "tell all" trash of sex, drugs, and back room deals that seems more like a low class ploy to sell books. What little there is of that in the book is quickly and quietly glossed over. He speaks of his career and gives his nuances on how he moved from an unknown to having more fame and less privacy. The professional reading is also punctuated with mini banjo solos.

He does not go much into his movies beyond "The Jerk." Most of his private life is still very much private, although he does go a bit into his relationship with his immediate family. There is not a lot of mentions of other famous people beyond a few tiny mentions here and there. It really is merely focusing on career development without throwing any of his past coworker under the proverbial bus.

For me, he came off as a hard-working professional with a lonely somewhat secluded life that makes me want to reach out and be his friend. However at the same time, it made me know that since his fame that he has erected a wall between his public persona and his private life. I do not see him as capable to have a friendship with the "common" folk anymore, as he will always be unable to trust anyone without expecting ulterior motive, which is a shame.

Steve Martin continues to impress!

Born Standing Up was a joy to read. Another reviewer likened the experience of reading this book to what it would be like if you stumbled upon Steve Martin at a bar and could have an extended conversation with him. I think it's a perfect description! I learned so much but I was left wanting to know more about some topics that he just gave us a teaser. I loved learning about his approach to comedy, and his experience of coming to grips with fame. Steve Martin is a renaissance man and his talent shines through in this book. I enjoyed hearing about his successes and was touched by his thoughtful introspection on his personal relationships. Steve continues to impress even after all these years.

okay; not great

I enjoy Steve Martin but do not consider myself such a big fan of him. Not a big enough fan, at any rate, to read a autobiography of him.

The reason I did read this autobiography was that I had heard that Steve Martin, despite his wild and crazy demeanor onstage, is in fact morbidly shy when not in front of the floodlights, and in fact spends most of his spare time poring over the Greek and Latin classics. I found this rumor to be intriguing enough to warrant picking up this short autobiography.

For an autobiography it is. The dust jacket presents the book as though it were Martin's chronicles of the years he spent as a stand-up comic, and how and why he got into and out of this business.

Sure, the book does that. You won't be left with any questions on that head.

But it's more than that: Martin goes into his family life, his private life, and even his education. So it's really just a short autobiography.

And it's not funny. I don't know if you're expecting it to be humorous writing, but, aside from mentioning jokes, it's pretty straight-faced throughout. Here's a sample:

"The TV also brought into my life two appealing characters named Laurel and Hardy, whom I found clever and gentle, in contrast to the Three Stooges, who were blatant and violent. Laurel and Hardy's work, already thirty years old, had survived the decades with no hint of cobwebs. They were also touching and affectionate, and I believe this is where I got the idea that jokes are funniest when played upon oneself." (p. 18)

All in all, Martin's book is a swift read: he sticks to his plan and the reader is never bored.

I have two complaints:

1. Steve Martin does an awful lot of name-dropping here. So unless you plan on making frequent stops to Wikipedia and YouTube to figure out who he's talking about, you're going to have difficulty with many of his topical references from the `70s. (And I'm from the `70s!)

2. Martin seemed to have some great material on his remote and unsympathetic father. Those are the parts of the book I'm going to remember the most. Take this:

"My father . . . died . . . and afterward his friends . . . . told me how enjoyable he was, how outgoing he was, how funny and caring he was. I was surprised by these descriptions, because the number of funny or caring words that had passed between my father and me was few. He had evidently saved his vibrant personality for use otuside the family. When I was seven or eight years old, he suggested we play catch in the front yard. This offer to spend time together was so rare that I was confused about what I was supposed to do. We tossed the ball back and forth with cheerless formality." (p. 19)

It seems he could have written an entire book about that time.

Anyhow, regarding the Greek and Latin thing, which induced me to read this thing in the first place: it doesn't seem to be true. Martin majored in philosophy at a third-rate California college before switching to English, but that seems to be the extent of it.
