Bush administration’s Predator State, which takes advantage of the public sector and undermines public institutions for private profit. Galbraith reports that although most academics have abandoned conservative principles such as free trade, deregulation, and tax cuts for the wealthy, politicians from both parties continue to advance policies that, in reality, have turned regulatory agencies over to business lobbies, allowed the subprime mortgage foreclosures and banking crisis, and created Medicare’s drug plan, which legislates monopoly pricing for drug companies. Freedom to Shop

Recently Bill Maher said: "He could understand why 1% of the voters would vote Rebublican. But he could not understand why the other 49% would vote with that 1%? He said it was like someone came into your house and took everything you had out in a suitcase and you say "May I help you put that in the trunk of your car?"

In "The Predator State" James K. Galbraith has attempted an explanation of this phenomenon. It is, he said, due to the concept of "economic freedom." This may be an older concept than one realizes. I remember it being the motivation claimed for a young woman who had emigrated to the United States from Sweden in the mid-1970s. She had immigrated, I was told, because there was no "economic freedom" in Sweden. "Indeed, the conservative concept of economic freedom actually stands opposed to to any measures that commit the state to raising the standard of living of the broad population. It opposes such ideas as universal health care, free public education, and public subsidies to the arts (sound like Sweden?). It particularly opposes these measures if they are to be financed by redistributive and progressive taxation. Social welfare implemented by democratic decision, as in Roosevelt's New Deal, or Lyndon Johnson's great Society, let alone the Chile of Salvador Allende or Venezuela of Hugo Chavez (both of whom were democratically elected in fair and free elections and ruled according to law), is, to this was of thinking, intrinsically unfree." However, the "free market" regime of Augosto Pinochet brought "economic freedom" to Chile even though he was a brutal dictator. "Economic freedom" obviously has nothing to do with "Political freedom."

"Economic freedom" thus consists in the ability to live one's economic life - and that alone - in a sphere separated from state control. As Milton Friedman defined it it is the "freedom to choose." You could say that it is the "freedom to spend" but to put this idea into perspective, we should call it what it really is: "the freedom to shop."

This idea is so palpably absurd that we are inclined to look past it. It is a perversion of the language to treat "shopping" as freedom. It is easy to scoff at an idea that is so remote from our liberal conception of freedom as bearing the lofty realms of political and social decision taking. However to scoff is a mistake since it is surprising how many people think in this manner and how deeply the concept has penetrated modern life.

The concept of freedom to shop has been extended, insidiously, from its origins in the realm of goods to the realm of carreers where it plays even greater havoc in the use of words. In a "free" capitalist society with private schools and universities able to admit whom they please and charge what the market will bear (have you seen the astronomical cost of tuition these days?), the freedom to choose one's profession becomes, in part, the freedom to become what one can afford to become., The choice is "free" because it's mainly a matter of money. Money, is this respect and from this perspective is a Leveler - not a source of class distinctions but a way of breaking them down. In this respect it is why Milton Friedman, Ronald Reagan and even George W. Bush could present themselves as democratic and even egalitarian "regular guy" forces in America. They did this through an inversion of perception that economic progressives and political liberals never got, but that resonated powerfully with at least part (10-20% ?) of the American public.

A great many people, not merely the rich, accept these ideas: a freedom to shop, a "freedom" to buy a career that you want, the freeeom to merge and acquire. This, of course, liberates them from any standard other than wealth and also from the political process. In this world any policy that reorganizes or constrains the allocation of money beyond the minimum policing required to keep markets honest is in essence and by definition an asaut on freeedom. Even elections are not "free," unless those who have the money are free to buy them (I once saw Mitch McConnel defending the Citizens United case on the basis of "free speech." It might have been my imagination but I got the distinct impression that he had a hard time keeping a straight face).

"What is amazing, of course, is that the meaning of freedom in every normal sense - of speech, association, faith, assembly, and the press - should be replaced by "market freedom." It is amazing the the freedom from fear and from want are also replaced by it. It is amazing the the public role in art and culture and science should be subordinated to it and suppressed by it. It is amazing that any associastion between markets and freedom should have taken such a firm root in so many minds. It is amazing that such nonsense could go so deep, and last so long."

All men are created equal

I must say that this book turned what I believe about the economy on its head, but it also enlightened me about how the economy is connected to fairness and equality. I used to think that our biggest problem was deficit spending, but now I see the biggest problem is fairness. Galbraith, who is the son of the famous John K. Galbraith who wrote The Modern Industrial State, which I read 40 years ago and gave me my first insights into how the economy works, describes how inequity in wages has distorted the market and created an environment not unlike Alice in Wonderland where people disenfranchise themselves by believing that free markets are somehow all-seeing and lead to the greatest possible good. Galbraith makes a case against this hands-off approach to markets and argues that unregulated markets will lurch from one bubble to the next. Crises like global warming will never be dealth with because there is no financial incentive to do so. Planning is the only thing that can save us and will have to involve a serious political battle because the corporations have saturated the media with the belief that the markets work best when left alone, which prescription leaves most of us on the bottom level of the next pyramid scheme while the corporate executives accumulate vast fortunes for themselves at our expense. The writing isn't bad, but it can be a bit hard to see what he's driving at at times. The resolutions he offers at the end make the read worth while. This book came out in Spring of 2008. Given the financial meltdown here in the Fall, the warnings in this book are eerily prescient.

Economic Reality

I was impressed by Galbraith's understanding of the structure of the American economy. Over the post WW II years, he proposes, the US economy, in each sector, has been dominated by fewer and fewer corporations. Is it accurate to characterize it is a corporate republic?...a corporate state?...or, when behaving badly...as Predator State, as Galbraith does? Eisenhower warned about the military industrial complex. Has this pattern become the default setting for the US economy...and, has K Street insured its perpetuation? Has this spelled the death knell of classical market economics?

Galbraith's answer is affirmative to all these questions....and the events of the last several months expose this long obfuscated economic reality for all Americans to see.

This book presents a big picture thesis...from it, springs Galbraith's conception of economic equality...and a new social contract, somewhere along the lines of his father's book: "The Good Society".

This is a good book and a good read. Its conclusions are inescapable, and very sobering indeed.

Before they passed, both William F. Buckley and John Kenneth Galbraith agreed that something had gone seriously awry in the American economy and politics. This is an excellent book that those, of either party, should be able to grasp...and perhaps, from its conclusions, begin exploring together, some prudent new directions for the nation.

Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and sister to actress Liv, feels she's had a difficult life. Growing up, she disliked her mother and longed for more time with her famous father. After her parents split up, she and her mother lived in New Hampshire before moving to Manhattan, where Tyler was enrolled in several fine schools—only she spent her time hanging out with her buddies getting high on pot, acid, cocaine, Ecstasy, etc. Her father intervened after she suffered a massive overdose: it paid to have a rock star for a dad, she says. Once on her feet again, Tyler was kept therapeutically busy with a lucrative offer from Lane Bryant to model clothing for plus-size teens. Months later she came to visit her mother and found her slimmer and in love. They bonded—but then her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor that proved fatal. Mia Needed a Dad

Steven Tyler is pathetic. And I am/was a fan.

He lets his very young daughter run free backstage at his concerts - enough said.

He won't let her live with him, his new wife, and two children, despite many pleas. Why?

He leaves Mia and her mom in horrible living conditions, while he has more than ample funds. His three other children live the good life.

He leaves Mia in the care of an unstable mother.

His response to Mia's serious abuse of drugs is to assess the close-calls via long distance phone calls, and declare all is well. This even though she describes herself as "going crazy." He doesn't even call 911.

He ignores every cry for help, other than to throw a gold credit card at her, which only buys her more trouble.

He interrogates her boyfriends by asking what drugs they have used. This guy should have turned over the role of dad to someone else.

The neglect and sick parenting must have left this woman with a load of baggage, and are likely responsible for many of her problems which she never explores in this book. As another reviewer says, she gives her dad a pass. She's young. She's got lots of painful emotional work ahead.

She blames her truly sick and justifiably wounded parent, and has yet to face the horrid neglect of her dad. She has a long road of healing to do.

Her many snippets of life advice, coming from a young woman with her history, who hasn't faced her father, would feel arrogant to me, a 52 year-old woman if it weren't so sad.

And yet in an Oprah interview, he says he's surprised she was in so much pain!

A Wonderful book! Bravo Mia!!

I finished this book in one day. Impossible to put down. I received it in the mail, opened the box and that was it- I read the whole darn thing.

It is so well written and it was great to finally hear the truth through a child's eyes. Her truth. Her experiences.

I've heard the story about her sister Liv in both Bebe Buell's bio "Rebel Heart" (which I LOVE) and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". I've heard all the rumors and it is lovely to put the puzzle pieces together. What a story.

I was left sobbing my eyes out in the parts about her mother Cyrinda Foxe dying of cancer. Her perspective was honest and moving.

This is such a good read. You put it down feeling good. Feeling good about yourself and others.
Not to mention the great inside stories about some rock icons.

I love the honesty!

I have mixed feelings about this book. I think it's a great read. It's very intersting and captivating while offering a very candid look at Mia's life. I definitely think it has the potential to positively influence readers in how they live their lives. The mixture of feelings is basically referring to the fact that Mia is brutally honest. While I appreciated her tell most (not all) tale others, as noted by these reviews do not. I think she is incredibly brave to write this book. I also think it's impossible for any reader to say that she complains too much about her mother when they clearly were not around to witness what I would describe as a trainwreck of a parent. Therefore, I would say my review of the book is that it is compelling and honest and I love it.

In this gripping account of an audacious and lethal World War I expedition, Richard Guilliatt and Peter Hohnen depict the Wolf ’s assignment: to terrorize distant ports of the British Empire by laying minefields and sinking freighters, thus hastening Germany’s goal of starving her enemy into submission. Yet to maintain secrecy, she could never pull into port or use her radio, and to comply with the rules of sea warfare, her captain fastidiously tried to avoid killing civilians aboard the merchant ships he attacked, taking their crews and passengers prisoner before sinking the vessels.

The Wolf thus became a huge floating prison, with more than 400 captives, including a number of women and children, from twenty-five different nations. Sexual affairs were kindled between the German crew and some female prisoners. A six-year-old American girl, captured while sailing across the Pacific with her parents, was adopted as a mascot by the Germans.

Forced to survive on food and fuel plundered from other ships, facing death from scurvy, and hunted by the combined navies of five Allied nations, the Germans and their prisoners came to share a common bond. The will to survive transcended enmities of race, class, and nationality.

It was to be one of the most daring clandestine naval missions of modern times. Under the command of Captain Karl Nerger, who conducted his deadly business with an admirable sense of chivalry, the Wolf traversed three of the world’s major oceans and destroyed more than thirty Allied vessels.

About the Author
Richard Guilliatt has been a journalist for 30 years and is the author of the book, Talk Of The Devil – Repressed Memory and the Ritual Abuse Witch-Hunt (Text Publishing, Australia, 1996).  Born in the UK, he was a feature writer at The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, before moving to New York in 1986 to work as a freelance writer. His work has appeared in many leading newspapers and magazines including The Independent, The Sunday Times Magazine, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times. He is currently a staff writer at the Weekend Australian Magazine in Sydney.  In 2000 he won Australia’s highest award for magazine feature writing, the Walkley Award. 

Peter Hohnen studied history and law at the Australian National University and was a partner in a prominent Canberra law firm for twenty years.  A commander in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve for two decades, he was posted to Cambridge University in 1999 to study the law of the sea and the laws of armed conflict as a visiting fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law.  On his return to Australia he was awarded a Masters Degree in Law from ANU in 2002.  He has been an independent legal consultant to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and has made several contributions to the Australian Dictionary of Biography. His great-uncle, Alexander Ross Ainsworth, was chief engineer aboard the steamship Matunga when it was captured by SMS Wolf in August 1917.

During WWI the Germans realized the value of menacing British commercial shipping lanes in the South Pacific. They sent the raider Wolf, disguised as a merchant ship, to lay mines and sink enemy vessels near English-controlled ports. Nearly 800 captured civilians lived aboard the ship during its fifteen-month voyage. The Germans took prisoners for two reasons: to adhere to ancient maritime traditions forbidding the murder of civilians and to avoid disclosure of the Wolf's secret mission. Michael Page meets the double challenge of credibly delivering British English and the many German names and words. twas a fine read. He sailed 'round the world with a sense of honor, the least I could do is proclaim him a sense of honor of his own. On some levels this book delved into areas that I expected yet on other areas it surprised me with going into areas of humanity that I wouldn't of thought of as being a part of this journey.

Focuses on the Human Dimension

When its High Seas Fleet was unable to break the Royal Navy's blockade in 1916 and unrestricted submarine warfare risked sparking war with the United States, the Imperial Germany Navy decided to use disguised merchant raiders (Hilfskreuzer) to attack Allied shipping on the high seas. The merchant ship Wachtfels was chosen for endurance, not speed, and she was armed with concealed 5.9-inch guns and duly commissioned as the raider SMS Wolf. This book, by authors Richard Guilliatt and Peter Hohnen, chronicles the 451-day voyage of the Wolf in 1916-18 which destroyed about 110,000 tons of Allied shipping. In many respects, this is a fascinating and well-written piece of history, which delves in considerable detail into a chapter of the First World War at sea with which few readers will be familiar. However, the emphasis in this book is on the human story - particularly the privations of the prisoners taken from captured ships and the Wolf's Captain Karl Nerger. Readers expecting more military detail and insight will find these details often shoved to the background in favor of descriptions about what the prisoners were eating. Yet even though I was quite familiar with the Wolf's cruise - having written a book on German Second World War commerce raiders - I still learned a number of new pieces of information that the authors had unearthed in their diligent research. Overall, The Wolf shines a spotlight on an obscure corner of the First World War and a style of conduct in warfare that now appears almost quaint.

The Wolf is divided into twelve chapters and has four appendices (the Wolf's specifications, a list of ships mined or sunk, a by-name list of the Wolf's crew and a list of the Wolf's prisoners). The book also includes two maps, a very nice cutaway diagram of the ship itself, 16 B/W photos and a 5-page bibliography. Although much of the book is reliant upon post-war memoirs by German officers and former prisoners, the authors have included research from other archival sources to fill out the rest of the Wolf's story. The book focuses very heavily on a few characters, such as the captured Cameron family, Captain Nerger and his Leutnant Rose, and much of the cruise is seen from their perspective. However, many of the other prisoners are simply annoying, such as the alcoholic Mabel Whittaker or Gerald Haxton (whom the authors continually refer to as the "secret lover of novelist W. Somerset Maugham"). Who cares? Many readers would have preferred that the authors allow the Germans to throw these prisoners into the cargo hold, slam the hatch shut and forget about them, instead of returning every few pages to their whining about not having whiskey and soda aboard the raider. The authors also diverge onto a few characters, such as Carl Newman, who were neither prisoners or crew members. Newman was a ethnic German who lived in Australia as a fisherman but was jailed under suspicion that he was aiding the Wolf somehow by surreptitious meetings off the coast. Newman's story is tragic but barely related to the Wolf and it would have been more pertinent to discuss some of the Allied officers involved in hunting for the Wolf. Throughout the book, Allied efforts to counter the Wolf are discussed rather haphazardly and focus more on what the Allied media was saying, rather than naval intelligence.

My opinion of Karl Nerger and his crew did change considerably with this book. Heretofore, Nerger was regarded as virtually the epitome of the sea corsair and his crew the cream of the Imperial Germany Navy. While these authors do continue to depict Nerger's humane side, he comes across as less than daring and his aloofness from his crew contributed to a serious deterioration in morale. After a year at sea, Nerger's crewmen were often involved in drunken and violent incidents, one of which nearly sparked a mutiny. Nerger's decision to keep over 700 prisoners on board - over three times what the prisoner hold was designed for - seriously reduced the efficiency of his ship, consumed resources such as food and water at an alarming rate and created endemic morale problems. As the author's discuss, the presence of women prisoners aboard a ship with men who have been at sea for over a year caused real problems and Nerger seemed oblivious to it all. During the Second World War, German raiders made greater efforts to transfer prisoners to auxiliary ships or drop them off on isolated islands, but Nerger seemed obsessed with their potential to give the Allies information about his ship's activity (which they did through other means, including a message in a bottle).

Most readers should enjoy this book, with its in-depth characters and periodic adventure (including two prisoners who try to swim to an island), although specialist readers will not learn much about strictly military issues. The cruise of the Wolf belonged to a different era of warfare, where enemies could still act with a certain basic human decency toward each other and the combatants respected non-combatants (and to a lesser degree) neutrals.

The WOLF goes on the hunt.

This was a quite successful raider! In both world wars, the merchant raiding ships that Germany sent out to terrorize the oceans did a spectacular job, but very few ever returned to port, especially with the enemy navies being so close. But the WOLF, a raider of over 5,700 tons, departed Kiel, Germany, in November of 1916 and returned to Kiel in February of 1918. I ordered this book because the reviews talked about the ship and all, but not completely about it's exploits, so I had to read all about it and finished the book just today.

Captain Karl Nerger kept the WOLF at sea for 444 days and traveled more than 64,000 miles in one unbroken voyage, equivalent to nearly three circumnavigations of the earth, without pulling into any port. He traversed three of the four major oceans and evaded the combined navies of Britain, France, Japan, Australia, and the United States, while carrying out a military mission that sank or damaged 30 ships, totaling more than 138,000 tons. When he returned to port, he had lost only a handful of crew and prisoners and had maintained extraordinary discipline on a ship crowded at times with nearly 750 men, women, and children.

You'll read about how one young, little girl, the daughter of one of the prisoners, became the darling of the German ship, how exceptional treatment was given to many of the prisoners, and how one enemy cruiser passed to within a mile of the WOLF and it's battle-ready crew at their stations, awaiting the order to fire, and the cruiser passed on without even seeing them! You'll hear about the storms they encountered, the minefields the ship laid out, and the consequences of those mines, some of which weren't even recovered for decades. One mine was even found on the shores of New Zealand in 2008!

I also read a lot about the reactions given about the raider by the people of Australia and New Zealand, which had very little navy support during the entire crisis, and the authorities believing the mines to be laid by German-born citizens in the coastal areas, not to mention the little support of Japan's navy, which was in the area, despite one of their ships going missing, which was the only ship to actually try to fight the WOLF. One Spanish ship that was captured also tried to make it back on the dangerous return trip to Kiel, but ended up being detained by authorities in neutral Denmark.

Towards the end of the book, after the WOLF arrived in Kiel and the crew went on leave to their families, I was eager to know about the fate of such an extraordinary raider that made it back intact. Not much is said about the topic, except that the WOLF was handed over to the French for reparations after the war, and she did a successful trade merchant career under their merchant marine for at least 12 years before she was scuttled in 1931. Why and where she was scuttled is uncertain, but I would like to hear more about this subject.

A great book! And it was told by a crew of such brave men who faced so much dangers!

Rehash of "Be Yourself" and just plain bad advice

Most of the book seems to be a rehash of the pick-up books that recommend you just be yourself and not act creepy. This, of course, is one of the two major types of "how to pick up women" books. The other is the "outsmart 'em", "use them before they use you" contemptuous approach.

And telling men not to twitch, have bad breath or dirty clothing, etc., shouldn't be necessary. Really, that's just padding the book. If the answer is "It's not padding. You'd be surprised how many men don't follow these suggestions", I still think that someone who needs to be told this isn't going to be helped by the book. I can't imagine anyone saying, "I have to bathe before I go out to a bar? And wear clean clothes, too? Huh! I never knew that! Thank you, Dr. Z!"

Then there are the obvious observations, such as "Hot women tend to be more promiscuous than other women." I don't know if I agree with that, but, assuming it's correct, if someone is reading this book, it's because he wants to know HOW to approach women, not which ones to approach. It's only half an answer to say, "The hot women are the most likely to sleep with a man." The answer to that is, "And the hot women only want the hot men. So what am I supposed to do?"

What isn't a rehash, padding or obvious is just plain bad advice - and it isn't even consistent with the "just be yourself and don't act creepy, and women will like you" approach.

For example, she suggests you hang around women's shoe stores or clothing stores (that's creepy, isn't it? Unless you're going to use the transparent, "It's for my cousin/niece/sister" dodge).

She also recommends ploys such as waiting until you see an attractive woman check the price tag on a dress and, with a sad look on her face, put it back on the rack. Then you go over to her and buy her the dress! Now, that's setting a bad precedent. Not to mention that you might have to buy a lot of expensive dresses before you get a date out of it!

about the "good" doctor

It amazes me how stupid society can become over something as basic,and in the grand scheme of things,shallow as eye candy.For all the five star positive reviews posted over this "PHD" and her book of "professional advice," allow me to shed some light on this woman as the psychoanalyst fails to honestly psychoanalyze herself.

1.-She married a criminal defense attorney for the mafia soley to obtain her green card.

2.-In the numerous times she has been to court over past marriages and lawsuits,a judge has been quoated as saying her testomonies are "less than truthful."

3.-She has posed nude with both her elderly mom (YUCK!) and her sister.... I don't know how in the hell they do things in Ukriane,but ladies,would YOU want to pose nude with your mom or make out with your sister?Hmmm... did her study in psychology touch the subject of incest?

4.-Although in one chapter of her book she says the answer to the question of "does size matter?" is a definite,overwhelming "no";she can still be found on infomercials at three and four am on various cable channels for "male enhancement" tablets.In another words,if the price is right,she's willing to throw the ethics of being a doctor out the window.

5.-Like so many "original" revolutionaries before her,she has come out and attacked -insert negative tone of voice here- Western ideology;specificaly in regard to Catholicisim.Even going so far as to say that St. Thomas Aquinas and other doctors of the Church were bisexual and had guilt complexes. It's very noble indeed to attack the dead as they are unable to defend themselves. On an added note,let's put the shoe on the other foot with this one--- Dr. Z,real name Nika Victoria Zdrok, boasts being both a Playboy playmate and Penthouse pet of the year. So you are going to demonize a religous belief and all who follow it,but you are going to justify multi-billion dollar industries like Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt that thrive off of addiction and insecurity?

6.-In the few adult videos that she has made that are heterosexual;they are all smothering,face-sitting,degrading and dominating.In some instances telling the viewer how "worthless" and "pathetic" they are and they could never get a woman like her because she is "too good" for them.Yeah...Vicky Z doesn't have any issues with men.None whatsoever.

7.-If you are willing to shell out two grand,you can look online and see that she is willing to be "very open-minded";by the hour of course. In another words she is a high class whore.Oh,but she's got a degree...

People need to pull their heads out of their butts and understand that this person is a con artist,user and manipulator.It's how she has always gotten by and will continue to do so until time takes it's toll as it always does and the eye candy loses it's flavor.

Comfort Food For Men

The main focus of this book is to reassure the male readers that there are beautiful women out there who will be attracted to any kind of physical or psychological anomaly. The message that resonated from the book seems to be a few short tips on how to meet women, sometimes by treating total strangers as higher class citizens, coupled with the reassurance that there's someone out there for everyone, no matter what your looks, interests, career, or personality. And if you're looking for a specific woman, you should find out her hobbies and her past boyfriends and reinvent yourself to match them. She tells readers to keep trying; a rejection is simply a sign of a bad fit rather than a honest testimony of the person's approach. This is a good book for reassuring people who feel hopeless after their last break up, but not a good resource for a person who's wondering why their past relationships have not held on. Dr. Z seems to tell readers the same kinds of things a relationship counselor picked out by your ex-wife would say.

By the way, did anyone else notice how many of the good reviews cited 'easy to read' as one of the pros of this book?

She probably wrote the book with good intentions. Or maybe she wanted to jump on the recent bandwagon of best-selling pickup books. But honest or not, this book was written for men to find women, from a woman's experience. Although she has a PhD in Psychology, her suggestions are not based on medical research. Although she references popular pickup artists, her ideology diverges from theirs. When deciding whether or not to buy this book, you should remember that she writes based upon her own experiences, expectations, and desires. I assume she has never tried any of the things suggested in this book to pick up other women. She only knows what has worked for her in the past and what her friends have told her. No girl imagines to meet her ideal man during a random conversation in the street who shares none of her interests and is the opposite of her physically and mentally. Most women I know tend to throw in the words "...and he was just so sweet..." somewhere when describing how they met their husband and men--that's how this book wants you to be.

There are 3 things you should take from this book however:
1. Notice how many times she uses her friends, almost as personal references, to prove her point.
2. All of her ideas have a pseudo-science name wrapped in an air of mystery.
3. Note how many of the attractive qualities she puts forward are associated with confidence (courage, leadership, bravery to expose one's weaknesses as well as his strengths etc).
These are things that women actually relate to and would be useful next time you're out there meeting new people.

So you can read this book, or you can simply remember to include your friends in your stories to provide validity (and make sure her friends like you too), take up any non-traditional western religion/ideology, and remember that even if you see yourself as an Average Joe with less to offer than 50% of your peers, that still means you're more of a catch than the other 50% of them.

Johnny Ringo is the Man. Everything he writes is awesome. The only trouble he has is picking people to help him write. They are not nearly as good. Because of his writing I’ve added a few songs to my playlist too... esp. Winterbourne (Celtic version). Being retired military it resonates with me.

The King of Denial...too improbable to believe...

Should you read this book? If you are interested in true crime as I am and in particular, interested in reading about murders that take place among family members, then I think you would be interested in reading this book. This is not a great book but it is interesting. It is an attempt to delve into the mind of a father who is hurting and who has an unconditional love for his son. The book is riddled with excuse after excuse after excuse for the murdering son Bart but comes down heavily on the young man who actually pulled the trigger. I, myself, had a lot of difficulty reading this book. I have children who are around the same age as Bart when he commissioned this heinous crime. I am not a forgiving person and so, as I read this book, I was very frustrated and found myself wincing several times (for example, when Bart was about to get married). If one of my children committed a crime of this magnitude against me or his/her siblings, I would hope that my spouse wouldn't presume to speak for me in death - I don't want to go to Disney World early (Kent Whitaker's take on his wife and son's deaths). I'm not sure I'm giving you my Death Penalty opinion or giving a book review. Am I talking about justice or forgiveness? I had to read this book - I will read every book that comes out about Bart Whitaker - a scary person who now regrets his actions (thank goodness for Rudy Rios or a murderer would still be loose). I can only think about his brother Kevin and how he lost his young life due to hate and selfishness (quite frankly, even after reading the book, I'm still not sure why all this happened). As a parent, I did learn a few lessons from this book - for example, don't be too generous with your kids - they may misinterpret your generosity. I wish Kent wrote a more comprehensive book. I wanted to get the whole story - did Bart get along with his mom and brother, how much trouble did he get into, what were his friends like, were drugs involved? This book is not enlightening. It skimmed the surface. It could have been so much better. A far better read is "Shot in the Heart" by Mikal Gilmore, the brother of killer Gary Gilmore. Although Gary did not kill a family member, Mikal Gilmore does provide a well-written story of a dysfunctional family with a killer as a member of the family. I believe all families are dysfunctional - but I wanted to know what caused Bart to do this extreme act of violence. Your jaw will drop and you'll be scratching your head over this one. Although the book was probably terribly painful for Kent Whitaker to write, if I were him, I would have done extensive interviews with all the players - Marshall Slot (the lead detective), Fred Felcman (the prosecutor), Bart's fiancé, Bart's friends, and especially, Bart. A final comment, I would have read this book even if all the review ratings were low, simply because it was written by Bart's dad and I guess I shouldn't forget that the book was really about forgiveness. I do appreciate that Kent Whitaker is donating the proceeds of this book to charity.

wow. i finished this book in 3 sittings. it was impossible to put it down. the unraveling of this story was absolutely an incredible process of unimaginable events. it was hard for me to understand why kent whitaker wrote this book. as i've researched into it, the situation seems that "it is his dog, he doesn't want anyone else to kick it..." Kent has donated every penny of his revenue from this book to charity. wow... i still cannot fathom losing my whole family... his ability to continue to live a tremendous testimony to his faith...

Helps show what makes a person a psychopath

The author of this book has no doubt suffered one of the greatest trajedies that could happen to anyone. The most important word in the book, however, is "I" which may not answer why all people become psychopaths, but explains a lot in this case. The author slings mud at some of the best criminal defense attorneys in Houston, the prosecutor's office, the police and most interestingly his in laws, for whom he relied on for a job for over 30 years. By his own admission he told his son where he could get money to flee the country. Several items are particularly noteworthy-he seems more concerned about never having grandchildren, than having one son dead and one in prison. He shows hardly any compassion for his dying wife who apparently was still alive when she was taken to the hospital. He runs down the Texas prison system ("no Holiday Inn"). His son is a murder and we taxpayers have to pay for ridding him from society so he won't kill anyone else. It is ludicrous how he repeatedly equates himself to David in the Bible. What he doesn't tell us is his repeated failures as a father. A kid growing up who repeatedly broke into school, who had tried to kill his family several times before succeeding, dropped out of college without his parents even knowing about it and who did who knows how many other bad things before murdering his family. Even in the end the author focuses on himself-llok at what a great guy I am for forgiving my son and now I spend my time feeding the poor. We can learn a lot from this book about our society-"I" parents produce "I" kids.

Actress, playwright, screenwriter, and iconic sex symbol Mae West was born in New York in 1893. She created a scandal -- and a sensation -- on Broadway with her play Sex in 1926. Convicted of obscenity, she was sentenced to ten days in prison. She went to jail a convict and emerged a star. Her next play, Diamond Lil, was a smash, and she would play the role of Diamond Lil in different variations for virtually her entire film career.

In Hollywood she played opposite George Raft, Cary Grant (in one of his first starring roles), and W. C. Fields, among others. She was the number one box-office attraction during the 1930s and saved Paramount Studios from bankruptcy. Her films included some notorious one-liners -- which she wrote herself -- that have become part of Hollywood lore: from "too much of a good thing can be wonderful" to "When I'm good, I'm very good. When I'm bad, I'm better." Her risqué remarks got her banned from radio for a dozen years, but behind the clever quips was Mae's deep desire, decades before the word "feminism" was in the news, to see women treated equally with men. She saw through the double standard of the time that permitted men to do things that women would be ruined for doing.

Her cause was sexual equality, and she was shrewd enough to know that it was perhaps the ultimate battleground, the most difficult cause of all. In addition to her extensive interviews of Mae West, Chandler also spoke with actors and directors who worked with and knew the star, the man with whom she lived for the last twenty-seven years of her life, as well as her closest assistant at the end of her life. Chandler (Not the Girl Next Door: Joan Crawford) draws on her interviews with the 86-year-old Mae West, known for her "risqué brand of humor," in this chatty memoir. West carefully constructed and guarded the image of her personality as a woman who enjoyed sex at a time when "skirts had to cover ankles." She contended she was "never vulgar. The word for me was suggestive." West (1893–1980) craved the spotlight from a young age and had been a success in vaudeville, where she began to write her own material. Diamond Lil Without The Sparkle

In the opening pages of Charlotte Chandler's new biography of Mae West, She Always Knew How, the author inadvertently tips off readers that they may be getting diluted goods. In regards to granting Ms Chandler's interview request West is quoted, "I'm saturated, I'm not promoting anything or selling anything, so I don't have any reason."

When excerpts of the interview were originally published in the February 1984 issue of MS magazine, the short article's snappy editing made for fascinating reading. Presented in this expanded form, the conversation seems to drag (no pun intended). That Chandler in fact conducted this interview is not in question. She has authored many acclaimed biographies of cinematic luminaries, but it's the exceedingly talkative nature of the material presented here that raises the question of what West actually said, and what Chandler interpreted as what she said, interwoven with comments made about West by other subjects the author interviewed over the years. Arranging this data into coherency may account for the large amount of elapsed time since the interview and the publication of this biography, some thirty years later. While it is improbable that Chandler has attempted to pull the wool over the eyes of readers, it appears West succeeded in pulling the wool over her eyes.

The fact that Chandler does not state a time frame, or how long a duration of time she interviewed West is troubling. Born Lyn Erhard, no personal facts about Chandler are available, and she appears to be somewhat of an enigma. Perhaps this is why she can relate to a personage such as West who had no problem rearranging the facts of her life to suit herself, or the listener at the time.

West certainly warms up talking about her favorite subject - herself, and it is wonderful to hear her voice throughout this book. However, to the informed Mae West fan, this voice is somewhat muted and self serving rather than being reflective. For example, when the subject of one of West's lovers is brought up, he is simply referred to a "D." Guido Deiro and West were in fact married and ample proof lies deposited in Envelope 7, Miscellaneous Letters, and Legal Documents in the collection at the Center for the Study of Free-Reed instruments at the City University of New York, Graduate Center. Years earlier, In 1911, West married Frank Wallace without obtaining a divorce. No mention is ever made of West being a bigamist.

Although West scored numerous successes in vaudeville and on Broadway, she suffered many setbacks as well, but these are conveniently overlooked and glossed over. Any biographer worth their salt having done background sleuthing would be aware of the ups and downs of West's long and varied career. As a result the uninitiated reader would believe that West's career was smooth sailing and everything was sunshine and roses. Far from being the truth, West was toughened by the assaults of critics and the resiliency she developed ultimately made her successful, yet little of that struggle is revealed or acknowledged on either part here.

In her search for validation and add credence to her angle on West, Chandler has hitched her wagon to Tim Malachosky, the last of a long line of "personal assistants" to Miss West. Malachosky spent eight years rendering unpaid secretarial services to West and his utter devotion to looking after her needs is beyond reproach. West in turn, was grateful to have him as part of her entourage. However, in a somewhat misguided effort, Malachosky has attempted to rewrite West's history in regards to diminishing the role of the other young men she befriended in the last two decades of her life, placing himself in a more prominent position than is his due. By sheer good luck of being the last fan having close contact with her at the time of her death, he came into possession of many of West's personal items. In his dogged determination to sanitize the importance of Mae West's contribution to the sexual revolution of the 20th century he has kept papers that he deems "Miss West would not like others to see" locked away in his personal archives, and Chandler's book suffers for it.

Sharp eyed readers familiar with Malachosky's 1993 self published pictorial to Mae West will notice that Chandler has devoted several pages in her new book reprinting whole passages directly from that publication. Malachosky's lavishly illustrated coffee table picture book is a lovingly assembled tribute to West, but was dogged by spelling mistakes and atrocious grammar which Chandler has cleaned up considerably for inclusion here. Revealing little new insights into West, Malachosky's comments reveal a lot about him and his attempts to act as a censor as to what fan letters and photographs West was exposed to.

West encouraged her young male fans to come up and see her and in fact Malachosky was present during one occasion when West hilariously conducted a verbal lesson on fellatio, much to his consternation. None of this is mentioned and Malachoksy is adamant that few visitors were ever invited to visit her Ravenswood lair. This flies in the face of a long list of guests that included Burt Reynolds, Elton John, John Phillips, Ian Whitcomb, Paul Williams, Van McCoy, along with an army of others.

West's lover and defacto common law husband, Chester Rybinsky, AKA Chuck Krauser AKA Paul Novak is dealt with in a very one dimensional manner. Novak unquestionably loved and adored West but had much more going for him as a well rounded individual with interests of his own than what Chandler presents here. As well, Mae's love/hate relationship with her sister Beverly is somewhat glossed over. According to Dolly Dempsey, long time West confident, the two sisters' tumultuous relationship harkens back to their early years living in a Brooklyn tenement when young Beverly broke her ankle and there was no money to have it set properly. The resulting club foot and guilt and anger over that incident, made for a lifelong bitter sweet bond between the two sisters.

Despite the score of other Mae West biographies that have been published over the years, Chandler's examination of West's life and career is refreshing and welcome in that we hear Mae West in her own voice. Sadly little of the famous West wit and sparkle surfaces in their conversation. The reader can't get over the feeling that what Chandler offers the reader is a lack luster and pale imitation, paste if you will, of what Diamond Lil stood for, and was about.

At Face Value...

Unfortunately, this book does not grab the reader, at any point. It is an 86 year old Mae West talking about anything and everything, yet saying nothing profound. It is breezy afternoon banter and minor recollections. And this is coming from a HUGE Mae West fan! I can safely say I have read every single book on Mae West, I even have her likeness tattooed on both arms! So you can take my word for it, when I say this book is almost unreadable.

For one--Charlotte Chandler did no reseach what-so-ever. There are endless factual errors, both in what Mae West says throughout and what others said in regards to her, but Chandler questions nothing. She just goes with the flow--so this becomes somewhat of a FICTIONAL book. You don't know, unless you have seriously studied Mae West, what is true and what is extreme "grande embellishment" (i.e. false recollection).

Tim Malachosky, despite popular belief, was not Mae West's "personal secretary for 10 years" and I have in my possesion a SIGNED letter by him acknowledging this. It was considerably less time, not to mention West had several guys tend to her mail, set up folding chairs for her guests, etc. The letter goes on to reveal that Malachosky was selling copies of West's 'Mae West on Sex, Health and ESP' book mere WEEKS after her death in 1980, at $10 a pop. And if we choose to believe all that he states in this latest book, combined with Chandler's slant--then Mae West was a normal elderly lady, innocent, pure, extremely ladylike and may well have had butter-scotch candies at the bottom of her purse, to hand out to crying babies! NOTHING could be further from the truth, and Chandler would have discovered this, had she talked to those much closer to Mae West (several of whom are still alive and only in their 50's and 60's).

The truth? Mae West was fascinated by sex and good looking men all her life. She adored a good lurid story by her younger friends and would sit with rapt attention as she listened (and then told a few of her own!). A detailed account of someone's trip to Beijing would have bored her to tears and she would have said so. She was, in fact, very much like her screen character, just a little more "subtle" in her delivery and body language. She was a PASTICHE/ a characature of a 'lady.' She was a New York 'broad' who knew how to put on the 'lady act' in certain company (non-intimates) and also knew when she could be herself (with true intimates). She made fun of this in 'Goin' To Town', as she was well aware of this transparent transformation, and how humorous it truly was.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I feel it's necessary. I am not entirely sure Mae West even said much of what is quoted in this book. In short--I feel Chandler may well have made a lot of it up because she quite possibly didn't have enough material for a book. As other reviewers have pointed out, "Why now? Why 30 YEARS later"? Chandler claims to have RECORDED these conversations. In this case--let's see a double CD set released to prove it. Now THAT would be a massive seller! The grammar does not sound like West, the weeping in front of Chandler is highly unbelievable, the endless chatter about Elvis and Marilyn Monroe is not customary of Mae West (who liked to keep the conversation centered around HERSELF) and...well...the list is endless.

In all other books about Mae West, one comes away with the 'feeling' of Mae West. When you finish this (which is no easy task) you may well feel nothing at all.
