Raja Shehadeh is a passionate hill walker. He enjoys nothing more than heading out into the countryside that surrounds his home. The earlier forays are peaceful affairs, allowing our guide to meditate at length on the character of his native land, a terrain of olive trees on terraced hillsides, luxuriant valleys carved by sacred springs, carpets of wild iris and hyacinth and ancient monasteries built more than a thousand years ago. Shehadeh's love for this magical place saturates his renderings of its history and topography. But latterly, as seemingly endless concrete is poured to build settlements and their surrounding walls, he finds the old trails are now impassable and the countryside he once traversed freely has become contested ground. He is harassed by Israeli border patrols, watches in terror as a young hiking companion picks up an unexploded missile and even, on one occasion when accompanied by his wife, comes under prolonged gunfire.

Amid the many and varied tragedies of the Middle East, the loss of a simple pleasure such as the ability to roam the countryside at will may seem a minor matter. But in Palestinian Walks, Raja Shehadeh's elegy for his lost footpaths becomes a heartbreaking metaphor for the deprivations of an entire people estranged from their land.

Having argued numerous land-claims suits, Shehadeh removes the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from political terror headlines and recasts it as a battle that encompasses countless environmental issues. The very nature of community is challenged here, as are the most basic questions of land ownership. He laments the Oslo Accords and expresses acute disappointment with the PLO leadership’s acquiescence to settlement development in exchange for political power. Raja Shehadeh's writing brings the land of Palestine to life. Excellent. I could not put this book down. Everyone who cares about the mideast should read this book. As other reviewers have said, What a tragedy that this landscape is disappearing.

On a positive note, this book is a real treat to the senses. The beauty of the land comes to life. very, very good!

Deep, captivating, personal look at the conflict in Palestine

None of the dozens of books I have read about Palestine approaches this in its depth and thoughtfulness. This is not a history of who did this, and who did that. Rather it is a personal story about the connection of one Palestinian man to the fast changing natural landscape of the land he inhabits. This could be read as a travel book documenting journeys into the Biblical landscape. What makes it deeper than that is the inner journeys the author is not afraid to share with us as he takes us on the walk. The book is informed by Shihadeh's decades of knowledge of the land, as well as his legal experience in defending it. It is a small book that is very heavy in content, thought, and feeling.

The story evoked memories of my hikes as a youngster. I recalled the hills and wild flowers and drinking out of holes in the rocks. The destruction of the natural beauty of the land is a tragedy.

Introduction

I'm an expert on religion. It's what I do.

In fact, I'm probably one of the most religious people you know. I write religious books, do religious broadcasts, speak at religious conferences, and teach in a religious graduate school...where I teach religious students to be more religious and how to teach other religious people to be more religious.

(A friend of mine says that religion is for people who don't want to go to hell, and the Christian faith is for people who've already been there.)

While I am an expert on religion, I'm not an expert on God. Nobody is.

God confuses me, and when it comes to what he's doing, why he's doing it, and why it hurts so much, I'm long on questions and short on answers. Paul asked the rhetorical questions: "Who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been hiscounselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" (Rom. 11:34-35 esv).

The answer is, of course, "Nobody here!"

That doesn't mean that I don't know anything about God. He has, for some reason I've never understood, called me to be his servant and friend. For some reason, he has asked me to talk about him to others. I wouldn't do it for anybody else but him. I have too many sins and too many doubts, and I'm way too cynical about myself and about lots of other things.

That's why it was such a surprise when I was asked to write a book on prayer. The original publisher made the proposal and offered a fairly large cash advance to write it.

I laughed at him.

(I didn't laugh at the advance because I'm so spiritual. The advances and royalties from all my books go to Key Life Network, the ministry with which I'm associated. Not only that, they aren't that big anyway. Howard Books, take note.)

"You're kidding," I said, pointing to my library shelves filled with books on prayer. "We don't have enough books onprayer?"

"Plenty," he responded, "but they're written by experts."

He thought he was making a joke (well, maybe not), but his words were the only reason a flawed, sinful, and sometimes wrong old preacher like me would ever write a book on prayer. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I realized there really was a need for an honest book on prayer written by someone who wasn't an expert but was a "man of prayer."

A friend of mine told me once that he thought God had called me to be a teacher so that others could say, "If Steve can do it, anybody can!"

Anybody can!

That's the reason for this book. It's from a man (me) who has been there, tried that, and is telling you about what he discovered.

One of the good things about a publisher's publishing a rewrite of a book (as Howard Books is doing) is that the author gets a reality check. I've often said to conferences and congregations, "Half of what I just taught you is wrong. I'm just not sure which half. So you're going to have to do some checking for yourself."

That's not true with this book.

I've made some changes here and there. I've expanded the book with some things I've learned since I wrote the first one. And I've added some of your own prayer stories. But, believe it or not, I haven't discovered anything majorly wrong with the first book.

So, if you've read the first one, you don't have to buy this book. The first one still works.

Uh...erase that. Buy the book. Key Life needs the money.

John Owen, the seventeenth-century Puritan theologian, wrote that we should have mutual communion with God and in "total giving up of ourselves to him, resting in him as our utmost end...[that we] walk together in a covenant of peace."

Does that make you feel guilty?

Mark Harris, in his book Companions for Your Spiritual Journey, writes, "Being a Christian means setting out on an inner journey -- a journey of following Jesus. Along the way we learn to obey him and imitate him. Above all we become his intimate friends, and our lives are transformed by that friendship."

How does that make you feel? Still guilty?

A. W. Tozer wrote: "The universal Presence is a fact. God is here.... And always He is trying to get our attention, to reveal Himself to us, to communicate with us. We have within us the ability to know Him if we will but respond to His overtures. We will know Him in increasing degree as our receptivity becomes more perfect by faith and love and practice."

On the other hand, if you do feel guilty and at the same time wish you knew the reality described in the above quotes but have had your hope destroyed so often that you hesitate to go any further, don't stop reading.

I understand, and I think I can help. I've been there, done that, and still wear the T-shirt on occasion. Let me begin by telling you my story.

A number of years ago I came to the awareness that God wasn't very real to me. Perhaps that would be no big deal to you, but for me it was very important. You see, I was a pastor and my job was God. I was the leader of a congregation, and those people looked to me for information about God that was something other than hearsay. God was what I was about -- and God was someone with whom I was not on familiar terms.

Don't get me wrong. I had long before this time determined that my faith was true. I had gone through a period of agnosticism and doubt and would not have remained a pastor had I not discovered the theological and doctrinal truth of the things I taught and believed. The Christian faith had become true to me in the same way the multiplication tables were true, and once I had seen the truth, I couldn't "unsee" it. But have you ever been comforted by the multiplication tables? Have you ever tried to find hope in a doctrine?

I knew a lot about God, but I didn't know God in anything other than the most superficial way. I had come to believe that the Bible was true, that Jesus Christ was truly the Son of God, that the Resurrection really happened, and that Christ would come back to clean up the mess. That in itself is no mean thing. Once we discover those truths, there are certain implications about those truths that we ignore only at our peril.

If I find out that two plus two equals four instead of five or three, there are certain implications of that truth for my life, my grocery price list, and my checkbook. Just so, if we discover truths in the spiritual and theological realm, there are also implications. I did my best to live out those implications. I wrote books on the implications. I lectured and preached on the implications. I knew that the Ten Commandments were from God and were not the Ten Suggestions. I knew there was a right and a wrong way to live, and I tried to live the right way. If God had revealed himself in Christ, then there were certain implications to be garnered from that truth: meaning and hope and forgiveness. If God was not a monster, then I could trust in his truth and act on his Word. The discovery of the truth was a major gift of grace in my life, and I will be eternally grateful for it.

However, I was only a tourist describing a country I had never visited. I was convinced that the country was there, I had read the travel brochures, and I had worked hard at learning the language of that country. I had even met people who lived there, and I had listened to everything they said about the country. The problem was that I had become an expert on a country I had never visited.

Do you know the story about the young man who wanted, more than anything in the world, to be a lion trainer? He read books on lion training, he talked to lion trainers, and every chance he got, he visited the zoo to look at the lions. Then one night he decided to test his knowledge. After the zoo closed, he climbed over the fence and into the lion section of the zoo.

The next morning they found some bones, bits and pieces of clothing, and a torn-up book on lion training.

My experience with the Lion of Judah was not dissimilar. I had gone about as far as I could with the book. I was tired of knowing a lot about the Lion. I wanted to know the Lion.

But the difference between my experience and the experience of the boy in the story was that I knew that lions could be quite dangerous. I knew enough about my subject to know that one doesn't go flippantly into the presence of a lion. Lions are not to be treated casually.

But there was more than fear that came from my knowledge of God and the truth he had revealed in Scripture. There was a longing.

I can remember the longing. I would be teaching the truths I found in the Bible and would look at the congregation and see people who were deeply moved by those truths.

Sometimes I even saw tears. I didn't understand that. I would wonder what was wrong with those who cried. One doesn't get emotional about truth. Truth is just truth. One doesn't shed tears over the multiplication tables.

You say, "Steve, you're a hard man."

You have no idea how hard. But I was not so hard that I failed to see in those tears a reality that simply was not my reality. When you don't have something or you're faking it and you meet the "real thing," it can be devastating.

So I got on my knees and I prayed. I knew the words and the formulas. I had learned those words from books, from my tradition, and from my experience. But this time I put aside the words and was honest before the Lion. I prayed:

Father, my sin is more real to me than you are. I believe that you have asked me to teach your people, to lead them, and to be their pastor. You have been gracious to me, and I have no complaint. If you...

This man knows Jesus

I like Steve Brown for a lot of reasons, but the main one is this: it is evident that this man knows Jesus. And I don't mean that he knows a lot about Jesus. Brown spends a lot of time with Jesus, one-on-one. And that's exactly why this is the best book I've ever read on prayer. It's not a "how-to guide;" nor is it dry theology. Instead, Brown shares with us his relationship with Jesus in hopes that we will be encouraged.

Short Chapter-by-Chapter Summary:
1. "Pr...more I like Steve Brown for a lot of reasons, but the main one is this: it is evident that this man knows Jesus. And I don't mean that he knows a lot about Jesus. Brown spends a lot of time with Jesus, one-on-one. And that's exactly why this is the best book I've ever read on prayer. It's not a "how-to guide;" nor is it dry theology. Instead, Brown shares with us his relationship with Jesus in hopes that we will be encouraged.

Short Chapter-by-Chapter Summary:
1. "Prayer is simply the communion, the communication, and the contact between the creature and the Creator. It is the expression of a relationship between two persons.... Prayer is what happens when the soul cries out to its Maker" (p. 8).

2. "It isn't our sin that causes God to be far away. The vicarious atonement of Christ takes care of sin. But stiffness-now that will kill your prayer life every time" (p. 25).

3. A successful prayer life requires commitment. It needn't be long. Structure and accountability help.

4. Childlikeness: "There is joy is resting in One who is in charge. When was the last time you giggled and didn't care what anybody thought?... When we are in relationship with God, there is a childlike joy in knowing that we are accepted and cherished - no matter what. That's what it means to be childlike, and rel prayer reflects that kind of joy" (p. 82).

5. "Intimacy with God...is the ultimate goal of the life of every believer" (p. 93). You want a deeper prayer life for the intimacy, not power, not "getting better." You must be called to it, be patient, and be flexible.

6.Find quite place, use centering prayer (imagination, word recognition), take off the mask, acknowledge, adore, worship, and praise. Meditate. Listen.

7. "God didn't design prayer so that you would get better.... God didn't design prayer so that you would be holy.... God didn't design prayer to make you more like Jesus... God designed prayer because he likes you and wants to spend time with you" (p. 143).

8. "There is a major element of prayer that most of us miss, and that element is laughter - a free, joyous, wholesome, hardy laughter.... Thoughts on "Approaching God" by Steve Brown

Prayer is a subject many of us wish we were better at. It is a journey and it is about a relationship with God. Steve Brown addresses this topic in a way that is very understandable and user friendly. He brings a perspective that we can grasp, appreciate, and identify with. I found it to be very informative, inspirational, and personally beneficial. Did I really need this book? Would it be worth reading????

I ordered the Book - and am glad I did !

One of the main reasons it appeals to me is... I don't really like reading. So it had to be a style that was
reader-friendly.

What was so great is that its like a conversation Steve Brown is having with his readers. He isn't talking
AT YOU. Its like he's sitting down and talking with you. And the book has some bits of humor.
I enjoyed the Book. After you read it, you know that in the future you will want to READ IT AGAIN.!

Understanding the University

What do Cal Ripken, Houdini, Edison, J. Pierpont Morgan, Churchill, Bismarck and Job have in common? Their qualities, combined, are what Steve Trachtenberg tells us are essential equipment for a university president. He shows why this is so in a book filled with wisdom, humor and numerous ideas about what university education means, needs, and gives back to students, their parents, and society. It's a graceful and fascinating work about one of our greatest American institutions.

Particularly enjoyable are the autobiographical elements of Trachtenberg's upbringing and experiences, which are skillfully interwoven with his discussion of the figures and problems, joys and perplexities of university life and governance. His candor about himself, and his insights into the basic issues faced by universities, give this book an authenticity and reach that will make reading it a valuable and memorable experience.

For parents who want to know for what they're paying a university, for students who want to know why they should spend important years of their lives there, and for everyone who wants an authentic view of what a university is like from the inside, and also to learn from and be amused by encounters of an interesting person with the world, this is a splendid book.

Insightful, Witty, and Disappointing!

"BMOC" offers several helpful suggestions for university leaders (also hospital administrators): 1)You shouldn't make everyone mad at you at the same time. 2)Your message should be uplifting rather than blatantly critical. 3)Avoid introducing more than one idea at a time. 4)Try to build a community constituency. 5)Improving the overall image of a place is important. 6)Maintaining perspective can be important.

He also openly admits to some frustrating weaknesses in university administration - eg. faculty ability to premptorily veto change (eg. schedules allowing faster graduation, hiring competent, but contrary scholars) - especially those in the arts and humanities; tenure; lack of an enforceable retirement age.

Trachtenberg, however, fails to face the biggest problem in America's colleges and universities - rapidly rising costs. He's aware of the opportunity to save money through increased class size, but weakly supports it. Research offers important contributions to both students and the world. However, Trachtenberg fails to mention that most is worthless - eg. how useful is the nth analysis of a literary work, hair-splitting analysis of factors affecting business success that pale in comparison to successful strategy, continual reinventing the wheel in public education while promising improvements that never materialize, etc.? Then there's increases in administration, decreases in teaching hours, shortening the school year, high dropout rates, and the approximately 50% of graduates unable to find jobs that require a college education.

Finally, there's the problem of erroneous content. Part of the problem involves the previously referenced worthless research. Similarly, higher educators promulgate an infinity of unfounded personal biases - eg. an Ivy-League professor telling new congressmen and senators on TV that the Smoot-Hawley tariffs signifanctly worsened the Great Depression. (Look at the data!)

Ego and Enthusiasm

University presidents are notoriously egotistical. Trachtenberg is no exception. Granted, he is likable in a grandfatherly kind of way and he seems more grounded in everyday realities and common concerns and a folksy kind of wisdom than most university presidents and so he has the ability to articulate the challenges facing higher education to a general public better than most. But like most university presidents he is assigned the unenviable task of having to defend an institution that is becoming more and more difficult to defend.

If there was such a thing as disinterested knowledge then the university would not have to defend itself but knowledge is political and so the university's mission is a politicized one. The traditional university was a place where students were versed in a tradition-bound curriculum; the clearly defined mission of the university was to create an educated class to assume leadership for a clearly defined society with clearly defined values and objectives. But as the world becomes more democratized/liberalized/globalized it also becomes less unified, and common values and objectives can no longer be assumed.

Trachtenberg thinks of himself as a social and political liberal, but he, like many university presidents, is a cultural conservative. He defends the tradition-bound idea of the university. What he doesn't see is that in defending its traditions, he is also defending a certain set of practices that have traditionally served a certain social class: his social class. His anecdotes are amusing but also telling. He received his values from an upper middle-class father and his educational life was not an interruption so much as an extension of that upbringing. Situated as he is in a position to benefit from these practices, he sees no reason to alter them or adjust them to new social and political realities. Trachtenberg is very fond of the fact that the university has a 700 year old history and that it remains one of the few constants in a changing world. But to remain relevant the university has to be responsive to social and political change and any institutional history will show that the university is not only a place that registers and critiques social and political change but a place that periodically undergoes changes of its own. The biggest change in the university in the last one hundred years is that scholars no longer conceive of knowledges as fixed things, rather scholars conceive of knowledges as flexible and evolving entities in rapidly evolving times.

Cultural conservatives, like Trachtenberg, want to slow that evolution and preserve tradition as long as they can. To the Trachtenbergian cultural conservative, multiculturalism and pluralism are only viable once one has mastered ones own culture; but to the progressive "mastery" is more of an ideal than a reality, and a suspicious one at that.

In may seem to a cultural conservative that the wisdom of the ages never goes out of style; but to the progressive one man's wisdom is another man's hokum.

Another significant change that has occurred is that the university is no longer seen to be the sanctuary that it once was (Robert Frost once said of college that it was a refuge from hasty judgement). Nowadays, the university is seen to be a socially enmeshed institution and one just as susceptible to error and misjudgement as any other social institution. This demystification of the university is a healthy thing. For too long the university has flattered itself with utopian fantasies of its own exceptionalism, but it seems that now more and more students see university professors/researchers/scholars not as magnanimous beings hovering over the rest of us but as socially enmeshed players with biases who defend their positions and status with rhetoric, much like lawyers and politicians.

Ideally, the university should be a place that fosters the highest level of social, political, and cultural debate. And universities do, on occasion, host evenhanded debates on lively issues (what counts as knowledge?, who has the right to create knowledge? who has the right to create and distribute information?, does globalization mean westernization?, is it tenable or morally right to divide the world up into western/nonwestern or first world/third world?), but in this democratic age its getting harder and harder for a university to institutionally accredit, legitimize, and defend some positions and not others.

Trachtenberg may think that it is possible to be fair about these things and reasonable, but Trachtenberg speaks with a confidence befitting a man who has always been an insider. Institutional privilege certainly looks different to the outsider, to those excluded from the game. There are new thinkers in the game who do not conceive of the university as a haven of good sense, but as a place that arbitrarly confers status and privilege upon those who can successfully negotiate the codes of this (until recently) closed and secretive community.

And, of course, if one is born male, white, and to the upper middle-class one has much more access to these codes than those not born male, white, and upper middle-class. Not surprisingly, The Big Man on Campus is almost always (there are a few exceptions) a Trachtenberg.

University presidents are certainly not the intellectual luminaries that they once were. Today the university president talks and acts like a CEO concerned more with the bottom line than with the higher aims of the university. As university presidents re-structure their institutions to reduce cost and maximize profits the first thing to go is job security. Trachtenberg has come down on both sides of the tenure issue: on the one hand he is for job security and safety nets, and on the other he thinks that some academics are overpaid and that others should not have received their tenured positions. Throughout the book Trachtenberg does not attempt to hide his disdain for faculty and faculty organizations.

Conclusion: He's a company man.

At 72, Trachtenberg remains enthusiastic, even if he doesn't ultimately offer anything particularly vital or groundbreaking to the discussion of the future of the institutional humanities. Like many senior professors he seems to be sustained by ego alone (Trachtenberg offered his speechwriting services to Colin Powell a few years back, and his next book, which is a continuation of these meditations on educational matters, is addressed to the president of the USA). He's a talker alright, but like many elder academic statesmen faced with an uncertain future he has little more to offer than the usual conservative prescription: retrenchment.

The world may become more diversified everyday but, if Trachtenberg has his way, the university will stay just the way it is for another 700 years.

These are the subjects people beg me to address, and I am ready and willing to do so. I have the answers for all of the financial questions you, your parents, and your kids have about getting rich and staying rich. Don't be intimidated -- I'll explain everything in layman's terms, not in the Wall Street gibberish the professionals use to scare you into relying on them instead of using your own judgment.

But what about my judgment? You want to know where my advice comes from, and I don't blame you. Most of what I know about making money I learned in my years on Wall Street, first as a broker at Goldman Sachs, advising the wealthiest of the wealthy about all these lifetime issues, and then as the manager of my own hedge fund, Cramer, Berkowitz & Company. I've had a long love affair with stocks, but stocks are only one of many tools, albeit the most important one, that we're going to use to create lasting prosperity for you and your family. I know better than most people the difference between having money and not having it, or having it and having a whole lot of it. I'm a self-made multimillionaire, and I'm going to share with you the lifelong disciplines that made me rich and have kept me that way.

As I said, I made my own money. I've also been poor. In fact, I wasn't just poor; I was homeless and destitute. In 1978 I spent six months living in the backseat of my Ford Fairmont while I worked as a homicide reporter for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, unable to afford even rent money. By 1979 I had moved up in the world: I was living in the most spacious corner of my big sister's studio apartment in New York City. I was the last person in the world anyone was ever going to ask for financial advice, but even then I was diligent and self-disciplined about money. I may have skimped on the auto insurance and skipped on the rent, but I still put $50 a month into the best mutual fund I could fi nd, Fidelity's Magellan Fund. I have always been fascinated with mutual funds and managers, and I am going to tell you all about which ones you need and which ones you should avoid. I know what it's like to need money and not have it, and ever since those early days I have lived in desperate fear of poverty. Living out of my car with barely enough money to get by convinced me that I had to become rich, that no amount of money was too much, and that I would have to do it with more than just my meager paycheck. I would have to parlay that paycheck into something much bigger, using whatever financial resources I could get my hands on. I spent twenty years single-mindedly pursuing greater and greater sums of money until well past the point where more money made a bit of difference. I know it's possible for anyone to get rich and stay rich because I did it myself and I'm no different from any of you.

Like most things in life, getting rich and staying that way take a lot of hard work, a lot of knowledge, and a little bit of good advice. There are many ways to get your hands on a whole lot of money, though few of them can be called easy. You can invest in the right stocks, get a high-paying job, start your own business, or inherit the money, to name just a few. But there's only one way to make sure your newfound wealth leads to long-term prosperity: you have to use your money to make more money, and you need to do it the right way. It's hard work, and it takes diligence, but in this book I've already done a lot of the work for you. No, I don't have six easy steps to financial security, nor do I have three magic habits that will make you a millionaire, and I can't tell you the financial secrets of the superrich because as far as I know, they're just as feckless with money as ordinary people. People who promise that they can make you truckloads of cash and help you keep it as long as you follow their simple five-point program aren't telling you the whole story. Easy steps turn out to be not so easy, and advice that seemed great in theory turns out to be next to useless in practice. I suspect that many of these people have never made a dime except in book sales! I read a ton of these personal finance guides because every time someone writes a new one, which seems like every five minutes, the publisher comes to me to pen the introduction and give it my seal of approval. Many of these books are well-written, some of them by terrific people, but they generally don't tell you what you need to know. I swear, more books have been written about creating and keeping wealth than any one person could read in a lifetime, but I have yet to find a single one that actually tells you, in detail, what you must do during every stage of your life to develop enduring wealth and ensure that you never have to worry about your money again. So I decided to fix that problem by writing this one.

For most people, there are few things that are more confusing and frustrating than trying to manage their finances. I can't tell you how many people I've spoken to who agonize over trying to pick the right mutual fund and end up giving up, their money still in a checking account, because the decision was too hard and reliable information was too scarce. If you're looking for a financial plan, it's easy to get a broad outline, but very hard to fi nd anyone who will give you specific, detailed advice. But that's exactly what I'm going to do. Others are more than willing to show you the forest: save money, pay off your credit card debt, contribute to your 401(k), start an IRA. But no one will identify the trees, where the money is actually grown. How should you manage your IRA? What, specifically, should you own in your retirement and discretionary accounts? Which of the most popular mutual funds available in your 401(k) plan is the best place to put your money? I'll even recommend the best mutual funds, using all the data available as I write this book.

Too many books about money go wrong because they try to offer timeless advice. There's no such thing as great timeless advice. The really useful financial information is time-sensitive. ...

New Topics for Cramer

In Stay Mad for Life, Jim Cramer addresses a whole range of financial issues that he hasn't dealt with on his Mad Money TV show and in his prior books. He takes a step back from his primary focus of teaching his viewers and readers how to select individual stocks and presents his approach to broader issues of personal financial management that one deals with from cradle to grave. In this sense the book deals with quite basic topics such as avoiding or getting out of credit card debt (about nine pages), creating and following a budget (about twelve pages) and obtaining health and disability insurance. These topics may seem elementary, even boring compared to the topics of Jim's earlier books, but are issues that people of limited financial experience need to learn about.

On the topic of retirement planning he talks about the advantages and disadvantages of 401(k) plans and of traditional and Roth IRAs. He likes 401(k) plans for their employer-dollar-matching feature but dislikes their limited choice of offered funds and their associated expenses. He advocates funding your 401(k) only up to the point where you've reached the maximum employer match. Beyond that he strongly advocates putting additional retirement dollars into an IRA where the range of choices of investments is so much broader.

In the category of family finance he advocates getting your children interested in investing as young as possible and lists six stocks that you might want to buy just one share of for your child that might pique their interest. That same chapter covers college and home financing.

In his prior books Jim has created lists of rules for investing and he does so again in this book. These twenty rules came from distilling his experience with the investments he makes for his charitable trust that he often mentions on Mad Money. For example one of these new rules that I've found myself prone to violating is "Don't quit when you get back to even". If you've taken on a position in a stock and if the price then drops significantly, it's easy to feel so grateful if/when it comes back up to your break even point, you bail out with a small profit. Jim contends that if the fundamentals of the stock are still good, hang in there with it for additional upside.

In the next to last chapter, Jim really hangs himself out on a limb by selecting five sectors that he thinks will be strong for the next five years and climbs even further out on that limb by naming twenty stocks that he thinks will do well over that time frame. I'm a subscriber to his Action Alerts e-newsletter where Jim announces the buys and sells that he plans to make for his charitable trust. At the time of this review, 16 of the 20 stocks are presently held by the trust and the other four are stocks that Jim has mentioned many times on Mad Money.

In the final chapter Jim makes what must be a major concession for him since he's such a strong advocate of selecting and holding individual stocks. At several places in the book he recommends that if you really aren't willing or able to devote the time and effort to individual stock selections (remember - his tough homework rule is one hour per stock per week!) your next best choice is a low cost passive index mutual fund such as the Vanguard VFINX. However if you REALLY want to invest in an actively managed mutual fund, Jim has conducted research and come up with a list of 13 recommended funds. In doing this research he looked at historical fund performance for the seven-year period 2000-2006. He gives especially heavy weight to fund performance in the three down-market years 2000-2002. He also emphasizes the importance of the fund manager and considers only funds where one manager ran the fund.

I recommend the book for those wanting a good (strongly opinionated) survey of the major issues of personal finance. For those not so interested in basic personal finance, just skip the first five chapters and read the final four chapters which stand on their own and will be of interest to the regular followers of Jim's books and TV.

Cramer's Track Record Better Than Comedian's

I've been a fan of Jim Cramer's for years, read this particular book several months ago, and think it's great advice for anyone trying to make sense out of the baffling world of investing.

The message Cramer delivers is really quite simple: Be patient, be consistent, and don't fret over short term bear market fluctuations. Investing is for life; consequently, rather than panic over our current fiancial plight, look for opportunities to buy low, and once you do, hang onto them for life.

In recent weeks, Cramer's credibility has been challenged by someone with tremendous credentials in comedy, but I've yet to see any of his expert advice on investing anywhere.

Jon Stewart, or the executives in charge of his mock news comedy show, decided the stock market collapse should be blamed on someone, so they decided to target Jim Cramer. After all, he made some sort of recommendation that didn't pan out, so in a country that loves to pick on high profile people who make mistakes; Stewart thought he'd ridicule Cramer on national television. After all, it would be good for ratings.

I don't really believe Stewart thinks Cramer is bad at what he does for a living; however, his disregard about damaging a good guy's reputation for the sake of a ratings point seems classless.

I'd suggest to anyone interested in building long term wealth to buy this book. I'd also suggest we focus our attention on the root cause for the current economic meltdown; for example, the general lack of productivity in big business, thanks to the questionable leadership tactics of many CEOs in Corporate America.

Cramer's smart, but he can't prevent ineptitude in major corporations from happening; and he shouldn't be blamed for it, either; by a comedian, no less.

An interesting novel

Stay Mad For Life is a great financial education experience. This book covers many issues that are never discussed with most people. I wasn't familiar with the different types of disability insurance, and I didn't know the best way to take advantage of retirement plans. However, the first part of the book did seem repetitive about some points, and I did find the last four chapters much more interesting. But, since nothing in the first half of the book is mentioned to students in high school or college, I think it is important information as well.

I enjoyed the way Cramer presented his twenty stocks of the future. I thought it was fun and clever, almost like he was on the Price is Right and was presenting a showcase. Additionally, since I don't do very much homework, I was glad that he presented mutual funds and other investment ideas that he recommends for people who don't have time to pick individual stocks. That is what I like about his novels, he tells how to do something, rather than what he has already done. I found this novel very helpful, if less interesting than his previous novels.

As a journalist in Mexico’s capital from 2007 to 2010, Hernandez collected experiences and impressions for this collection of essays largely about the city’s youth subcultures. Some pieces diverge into discussions of the general features of Mexico City, such as its smog and its plague of kidnapping, but Hernandez, not long out of college, chiefly immersed himself in the haunts and attitudes of 20-year-olds. Down and Delirious

You think you live in the coolest city in the world? Well you don't, unless, of course, your name is Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez has been living in Mexico City for the past three years and in Down and Delirious in Mexico City he takes us on a dizzying tour of the city. A city so crowded with people (8.84 million and counting) that it is, literally, sinking into the ground, surrounded by volcanoes, perpetually shrouded in smog and historically steeped in violence that, even today, it cannot escape. Hernandez takes us with him on a religious pilgrimage to the Virgen de Guadalupe on her feast day, inside exclusive parties in the city's burgeoning fashion scene and punk rock parties in surrounding neighborhoods that end in full on rumbles. Down and Delirious in Mexico City describes a city that is, at the same time, dangerous, exciting, violent, modern, historical, spiritual and restless. Hernandez's background as a journalist serves him well here whether he's at a protest march in support of emos or randomly catching the daily flag ceremony that demands solemnity from the people passing through the Zócalo. This book will make you wish that you lived in Mexico City and glad that you don't.

Read (and visit) if you dare...

Being a native of this mega dynamic city, I was curious to read what someone who only lived there for a few years before writing about it had to say. In all honesty, it is an excellent expresion about the city. I always found it impossible to describe my city to people abroad, to the point where I completely gave up trying to, simply because people have certain projections based on what they hear and see in movies and media, and no matter how much detail you describe, the box into which the city (and country) has been put is too thick to break down. I find that Mexico is particularly hard to describe because of its proximity to the U.S., it is overshadowed, yet it it is culturally so distant, and very much misunderstood outside the country. Brazil or Panama are probably not as shokingly surprising to first time visitors as Mexico City is. Likewise Mexico is seen very differently in the rest of the world than it is in North America, mainly because of the migration issue. I recommend the book, better yet as you are traveling in the former Tenochtitlan metropolis. It will put some things into perspective, which, unless you plan on living there, you will not have time to personally experience. Viva la capital!

Short and enjoyable-

I am an American who lives in Mérida, Mexico and I bought this book as I am considering moving to Mexico City. I did not want a guide book, but rather a book that speaks more to cultural issues and what it is like to LIVE in Mexico City. This book delivered. Though it is not particularly deep nor philosophical, I found it to be a good starting point about the city and it's people. And for those like me, who want to read more, the author gives some references in the form of blogs, websites and books that he used as secondary materials. The book does tell much about a wealthy person's way of life. The first-person narratives are about the author's interactions with punk rockers, emos, fashionistas, partiers and the like. But it is written by a young man who is just starting out. It reflects his experiences and what he was interested in and had access to, not what you or I might want. The book drags a bit, here and there, and some chapters had me saying, "So what?" but overall I enjoyed it.

It takes courage to live and work in another country and to write about it. And to me, that made this an inspiring book. All in all, I feel like I have a much better feel for Mexico City and my next trip there will be greatly enriched by Down and Delirious in Mexico City. I look forward seeing what else this author comes up with in the future.
