Top Tips For Fussy Eaters

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN Most children adore cooking, and tasks such as squeezing fresh orange juice and cracking eggs are well within the capabilities of a young child. It's amazing how being involved in the planning and preparing of a meal can stimulate a child's appetite. Cooking is also a great way of bonding with children -- spending quality time shopping for ingredients and actually making the recipes together can be a fun task for everyone involved.

It's a good idea to ask your child to invite over a group of friends, choose a menu, and get them to prepare their own lunch or supper (younger children will need a little adult supervision). Not only are they more likely to eat something they have a hand in preparing, but they are also measuring ingredients, keeping track of time, etc., all without noticing.

It's also fun to organize a cooking birthday party. Sit down with your child and choose a selection of party recipes such as Animal Cupcakes, Focaccia Pizza, My Favorite Gingersnaps, and Vegetable Kebabs. Group the children in pairs to prepare the food. I've organized many cooking parties for my children, and they were so popular that many of their friends ended up doing the same for their birthdays.

EAT TOGETHER Eating with the whole family whenever possible can really make a difference. Personally, I think that taking the focus off your child's eating and having lots of social chat at the table is helpful. Avoid using mealtimes to assert your authority. If there is a lecture to give, choose another time.

My children are teenagers now, and on a Friday night we always try to have dinner together and take turns telling one another some of the good and bad things that happened to us during the week. Sometimes children don't realize that bad things happen to adults, too, so it doesn't matter whether it's trivial or important -- dinnertime is a time for communicating and getting to know one another. It can soon become a regular family ritual. Children are more likely to open up to you if you are open with them, and it's good bonding time.

REWARD SCHEMES In a recent survey, 25 percent of mothers said that they dread mealtimes, and nearly 50 percent admitted they resort to bribery to get their children to eat up. Sticker charts usually work best once your child reaches two and a half. Keep portions absolutely minuscule (your child can always ask for more and will get a sense of achievement for finishing his or her meal), and at first give a sticker for just trying the food. Your child could have a yogurt as a reward for trying his or her main course. The treats for completing a sticker chart should not be unhealthy foods (e.g., sweets), as this gives the wrong message. Ideally, they should be small and affordable (you may be doing sticker charts for quite a long time!). Make the charts yourself, perhaps using pictures of your child's favorite things (tractors, fairies, etc.) to decorate it. You could even download pictures from the Internet for your child to color in to make the sticker chart with you. Try to keep them short for this age group so that the first one is relatively easily attainable and teaches your child the purpose of these charts.

Another useful reward scheme, for slightly older children, is to fill an empty jar with small objects such as dried pasta shapes. One pasta shape is awarded for eating a meal or trying something new (or any other good behavior). Start with a small jar and let your child put the pasta in him- or herself. A small present or treat (e.g., family trip to beach/football game/Rollerblading in the park) is the prize for filling the jar so that the lid does not fit on.

Encourage your child to make an "Eat Up" book. Buy a scrapbook and get your child to stick in the packaging or a photo of the new food that he or she eats. You could find some old food magazines and cut out photos of foods that you would like to get your child to eat and keep them in a shoe box. You could also get your child to draw pictures of the new food. Each time your child has tried or eaten six new foods and stuck them in the book, he or she gets a reward. It might be stickers, jewelry, sports equipment, or a trip to the movies -- choose something that would appeal to your child and isn't too expensive.

MAKE FOOD ATTRACTIVE AND FUN Give small portions -- it's not good to overload your child's plate. Also, children generally prefer smaller pieces of food, so it's a good idea to make foods such as mini burgers with baby potatoes, small broccoli florets, and mini carrots. They also like eating from small containers, so use ramekins to prepare individual portions of foods. You can also make a batch and freeze them.

Attractive presentation can make the difference between your child's accepting and refusing food. Whole fruit may not get eaten, but thread bite-size fresh fruit onto skewers or straws and it immediately becomes more appealing.

Children also like to assemble their own food, so you could lay ingredients out in bowls and let your children fill and fold their own wraps or choose their favorite toppings for their homemade pizzas.

BLIND MAN'S GRUB If you have a little "junk food junkie" who refuses to try anything new, play a game in which you blindfold your child and give her several foods to taste, some old favorites and some new, and see if she can identify what they are.

HEALTHY JUNK FOOD Create your own "healthy junk food." Make pizza bases using mini bagels, English muffins, focaccia bread, or pita bread and let your child choose his or her favorite toppings. Make burgers using good-quality lean beef -- and I have my own delicious version of chicken nuggets, for which you marinate the chicken in buttermilk, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and lemon and then coat in bread crumbs and Parmesan.

START AS YOU MEAN TO CONTINUE Start your baby off on fresh baby food rather than jars of processed food with a shelf life of two years. If they are used to a variety of fresh flavors early on, children are much less likely to become fussy eaters when you try to integrate fresh foods into family meals.

Once a child's palate has become accustomed to the intense sweetness of refined sugary foods, it is harder for him or her to appreciate the more gentle natural sweetness of fruit. If you want your child to enjoy fresh fruit, restrict sugary foods.

HEALTHY SNACKS After school is a great time to get your child to eat something healthy, as they generally come home starving. The trouble is that most children dive into the cookie jar or grab a chocolate bar after school. Have something ready prepared on the table. Cut-up fruit on a plate is much more tempting than fruit in a fruit bowl, and children like raw veggies with a tasty dip. It's quick and easy to make delicious wraps, pita pockets, or pasta salads, and it's a good idea to have a low shelf in the fridge from which children can help themselves to tasty healthy snacks.

Reduce snacks between meals to one in the morning and one in the afternoon and make sure they are healthy.

Try to control how much -- and what -- your child drinks between meals and at mealtimes. Try to encourage him or her to drink more water.

YOUR DENTIST IS YOUR ALLY Next time you go, ask the dentist to explain to your child what will happen to his teeth if he eats too many sweets and drinks too many sugary drinks. You can remind him of this the next time he demands the latest sweets he has seen on TV. Limit sweets to once or twice a week.

LET THEM PACK THEIR OWN LUNCH Get your child involved in packing his own lunch box -- that way you will know what foods he finds acceptable. There are some foods children may eat at home but won't eat in front of friends. Also make sure food is easy and quick to eat. Children won't bother with anything complicated because they are usually in a rush to get to the playground. If you give fruit, it's usually best to cut it up or peel fruits such as clementines and wrap them in plastic wrap.

CHANGE OF SCENERY Take food outdoors in the summer and have a picnic. This could just be in the backyard. For some children, a change of scenery works wonders. You could even take teddy bears and spare plates and cups so that the bears can "eat" with you.

In the summer, barbecues tend to be popular with children -- they like hamburgers, drumsticks, or corn on the cob cooked on the barbecue.

It's also fun to play make-believe if children are preparing a meal themselves. Let them create a restaurant in one of the rooms in your house. My children used to love doing this: one would be the waiter, the other the chef.

TRY SOMETHING NEW You are probably frustrated when children refuse to eat something that they have never even tasted. A fear of new foods is known as neophobia. It generally develops at around eighteen months, and babies who would happily accept many foods suddenly become suspicious and reject anything unfamiliar. If your child has a very restricted diet, it is best to give new foods when she is really hungry, let her see other people eating the same food, try to encourage her to eat just a small amount, and give lots of attention and praise if she is willing to try it. If she still refuses to eat it, maybe mix it together with something she likes. For example, if your child likes pasta but won't eat vegetables, try making a lasagne with spinach.

DON'T BE SCARED OF SAYING NO Children are good at inducing parental guilt, but you will make your life difficult if they know that they can twist you around their little fingers. Instead of rewarding good behavior with sweets, encourage children to choose treats such as stickers or comics.

PLAY THE FOOD DETECTIVE GAME Make rejecting unhealthy food into a game -- ask your child to find a drink that contains less than 10 percent juice, and then get him to look for one with the words "pure fruit juice" or "100 percent juice." Ask your child to find you a breakfast cereal that isn't high in salt or sugar by picking a cereal with less t...

Misleading Title
By Veggie Girl
After receiving the cookbook, I opened to two random pages to see what I can do to rescue dinner from the clutches of my SUPER-picky eater. The first recipe was vegetable and cashew-nut burgers. That will absolutely not fly in this house. I may have mentioned that my child is... picky. The next random page had an ingredient list of 16 different items. This does not meet my definition of "quick", as the title claims. In flipping through, I saw several risotto recipes, which are also not quick. The last time I attempted a butternut squash risotto, it took me two hours and my daughter refused to try even one bite of it.

The cookbook has great recipes, just not "quick" recipes that "fussy eaters" "will actually eat".

I don't see much of a difference
By J. White
I have one AK's original cookbooks and have enjoyed using it. I bought this one in the hopes that there might be some different recipes to try with my daughter who has ASD and oral sensory issues and is one heck of a picky eater. I can't say that there is that much difference. And so far my daughter hasn't tried anything that is newer. It could be that maybe I need a different approach and not only different foods.

Whirlwind: The Air War Against Japan, 1942-1945, by Barrett Tillman

Whirlwind is the only book to examine in depth the human drama behind the most important bombing campaign in history. While the air war against Nazi Germany has been covered in-depth by many books, Barrett Tillman, a renowned authority on military aircraft and the air war in the Pacific, is the first to tackle the air war against Japan. For decades, historians and politicians have debated whether or not Japan was on the verge of surrender in August 1945-before the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tillman argues that for all the widespread death and suffering, the bombing of Japan remains a great example of air power's ability to end a long, bitter, and bloody war without invasion. Writing from the perspective of the aircrews and the generals and admirals who commanded them, Tillman examines all aspects of the human drama of the war, combining historical analyses with the words of survivors from both sides of the bomb.

From Booklist
Tillman, who has written many books on WWII aviation, scales from histories of particular types of warplane up to, in this volume, a history of an entire air war. Spanning the American air campaign against the Japanese home islands, which began with the famous Doolittle Raid of April 1942 and concluded with several conventional attacks mounted after the obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Tillman centers on the B-29 bomber as the war-winning weapon. Hampered by technical problems in development, the plane’s effectiveness was also limited by its initial basing in India and China and its operators’ doctrinal fixation on high-altitude “precision” bombing. As Tillman recounts, only when based in the Mariana Islands and commanded by a general (of whom Tillman is a biographer, LeMay,2005) who firebombed enemy cities from low altitude did the B-29 vindicate its fearsome potential. Also recounting attacks by American carrier aircraft and the atomic bombings, Tillman tenders his verdicts on controversies about their strategic utility or justification, and embeds combat experiences in a narrative sure to engross WWII readers. --Gilbert Taylor

The campaign that ended World War II.
By R. W. Russell
Here is the whole story of the aerial assault on the Japanese home islands from 1942 to 1945. There have been other excellent works on various aspects of the campaign, but Barrett Tillman's latest effort encompasses the entire story, covering virtually every mission against the home islands flown by both American and British forces during the war.

When I first learned that this book was in the works, I initially thought that it was going to be another lengthy tome on the B-29s that carried the vast majority of the bombload against Japan. Instead, I was pleased to see that Tillman has included the entire story, from the Doolittle raid barely 3 months after the Pearl Harbor attack to last photoreconnaissance sortie over Japan after the surrender in 1945.

While the B-29 saga is not the entire book, the plane's development, deployment, and operations are nonetheless thoroughly covered. Tillman doesn't hold anything back on that score, since the B-29 story was mostly one of failure until General LeMay made a drastic, almost bizarre change in mission tactics months after the first bomb fell from a Superfort. The advent of nighttime low-level firebombing by massed B-29 formations literally changed the campaign from one of failed expectations to stunning success.

Some reviewers have given Tillman's other aviation history books low marks because of his somewhat casual writing style and his bias towards nonstop action as opposed to a more scholarly approach to the subject. It would be regrettable to see that here as other reviews accumulate, because it's Tillman's unique style that makes Whirlwind a truly great read. If you want scholarly history on the bombing of Japan or any other element of World War II, voluminous references abound. But most of us are not scholars and care little for scholarly research. Tillman knows that and writes to the audience that appreciates a historical narrative told in a manner that captures and holds the reader's interest from cover to cover. Whirlwind excels in that category while delivering its subject matter with clarity and thoroughness.

The Whole Story, at the Last Minute
By Check Six
When I saw the first ads for this book I thought that somebody MUST have covered all allied air operations over Japan in one volume before--but apparently not. At least I couldn't find it. In that regard alone, Whirlwind fills a gap in military/naval/aviation history that has existed for 65 years.

It's understandable that most of what's been published focuses on B-29 missions from China and the Marianas. But Tillman does an excellent job of merging all the air forces that flew over the Japanese home islands, and the often overlooked US Navy, Marine Corps and British units receive much deserved attention. The background chapters describing the evolution of army and naval aviation are thorough without being excessive, and the author does an especially good job describing the individuals who produced operating doctrine and procedures as well as influencing the hardware: aircraft and ships.

Probably the least known aspect of the Japanese air campaign is covered in a short appendix: Army and Navy operations from the Aleutian Islands to the Kuriles. The book would not have suffered much from omitting that section, but it's definitely enhanced by the inclusion of the "Empire Express" missions.

The photo section is interesting in itself: a fine variety with good quality reproduction.

It's obvious that Tillman knows his subject, and he reports its sacrifice and horror chillingly, as in a memorable passage describing the March 1945 fire bombing of Tokyo. We can be thankful that he and other "last minute" historians are recording such stories while there are still some WW II veterans to relate their tales. A quick look at the contributors shows that many are already deceased, so this book probably could not have been written in another five years.

Scholarly, readable and definitive
By Walter J. Boyne
Author Barrett Tillman has produced a welcome reminder of the efficacy of air power in Whirlwind. The most authentic and interesting presentation yet of the powerful 1945 air campaign in which true air power was realized for the first time, Whirlwind achieves every author's aim by being both scholarly and immensely readable. In telling the story of the U.S.A.A.F.'s pell-mell growth first to maturity and then to ascendancy in the skies over Japan, Tillman combines history in painstaking detail with the warm human drama of the conflict. One unusual, difficult but very valuable contribution is the care he takes to present both the American and the Japanese points of view at every level, from combat crewmember to commander.

The author covers all aspects of the air campaign against Japan, from Jimmy Doolittle's famous strike through the searing power of General LeMay's intensive fire-bombing campaign and le coup de grace of two atomic bombs. The accounts of the remarkable results from the B-29 aerial mining campaign are a welcome addition to the book, reminding us again of just how versatile the big Boeing bomber proved to be.

Tillman pulls no punches, laying out in detail just how destructive the bombing raids were but also reminding us of what a dreadful enemy the Japanese military proved to be with their heartless slaughter of captured airmen and their demonstrated intent to use every able civilian to repel an invasion. There is much to be learned from this book about World War II, and perhaps even more on the proper conduct of warfare at the present time, when the exercise of air power seems to be shelved in favor of futile attempts to win hearts and minds.

Great book
By Happy reader
As a physical therapist, I was initially interested in reading the book to learn more about the F.A.S.T. treatments, but since reading the book I thought it was thorough and to the point regarding health and injury. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about fitness/health no matter what their level of education.

Muscle Medicine is written mainly in layman's language and easy to understand.
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book mainly because I wanted to learn more about "frozen shoulder" (my condition) and how to prevent other injuries in the future. I was pleased that the book was written mainly in layman's language, making it easy to understand. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't more on my specific condition (only 2 pages). There is quite a lot of general information and exercises on how to prevent some conditions, and there are specific exercises to do for shoulder health, etc. I guess I was hoping for even more. Overall, it's a very good book and I haven't seen anything quite like it for the general public.

THE SECRETS OF THE TUDOR COURT SERIES IS
"RICH AND LUSHLY DETAILED, TEEMING WITH PASSION
AND INTRIGUE," SAID ROMANTIC TIMES. NOW TALENTED
KATE EMERSON CONTINUES A SAGA AS DRAMATIC
AND SEDUCTIVE AS THE COURT ITSELF.

Pretty, flirtatious, and ambitious. Nan Bassett hopes that an appointment at the court of King Henry VIII will bring her a grand marriage. But soon after she becomes a maid of honor to Queen Jane, the queen dies in childbirth. As the court plunges into mourning, Nan sets her sights on the greatest match in the land...for the king has noticed her. After all, it wouldn't be the first time King Henry has chosen to wed a maid of honor. And in newly Protestant England, where plots to restore the old religion abound, Nan may be the only one who can reassure a suspicious king of her family's loyalty. But the favor of a king can be dangerous and chancy, not just for Nan, but for her family as well...and passionate Nan is guarding a secret, one that could put her future -- and her life -- in grave jeopardy should anyone discover the truth.

Based on the life of the real Anne Bassett and her family, and drawing extensively from letters and diaries of the time, Between Two Queens is an enthralling picture of the dangers and delights of England's most passionate era.

From Publishers Weekly
Emerson's second in her Tudor court series (following Secrets of the Tudor Court: The Pleasure Palace) begins with Jane Seymour's death after giving birth to a son, Edward, and follows the fortunes of one of her maids of honor, Nan Bassett. Concerned about her position now that her queen is dead, Nan catches Henry VIII's eye almost at once, a dangerous position for a young maid. When her family becomes embroiled in treason and scandal, it is all she can do to stay alive and must balance the desires of a king with the desires of her heart. As in her first Tudor novel, Emerson skillfully crafts a strong heroine who maintains careful command of her sexuality and her independence. Nan's behavior is as brave as it is scandalous for the time, and Emerson makes readers appreciate the consequences of Nan's choices. An in-depth view into the later years of Henry's court with the charismatic king gone to seed, makes him a character, in Emerson's capable hands, to be feared and in some ways pitied. (Jan.)

Secrets of the Tudor Court: Between Two Queens by Kate Emerson
Historical Romance-Jan. 5, 2010
4 stars

Between Two Queens is an interesting peek into the Court life of the Tudor reign as seen through the eyes of the brash and young Anne Basssett. Nan Basset was a real person and Kate Emerson does a wonderful job of bringing her to life.

From the moment Nan Basset is chosen as a Maid of Honor to Queen Jane she hopes to use her position to find a young, wealthy and well-connected husband and further the ambitions of her and family. But her plans are thrown into turmoil when Queen Jane suddenly dies after giving birth. Nan is left adrift, she no longer has a post and she struggles to find a way to stay at court, the seat of power. But her drive is derailed with the attentions of King Henry VIII and constant intrigue that keeps her on her toes. Can Nan find love and navigate her way through court while still helping her family?

This was a fascinating look into the Tudor Court that felt real and alive. Greed and power drive much of the action in this story as the characters try to find favor with either the King or Queen. It is really a tale of a young woman's coming of age. Nan is determined to have a life away from her overbearing mother. But when she first arrives she is unprepared for the danger, intrigue and excesses of court life. Nan quickly learns and is soon planning and manipulating her way through the often malicious court life.

This book sometimes did feel a little like an autobiography although the author does an excellent job of making Nan more accessible. I often had the feel of reading a Philippa Gregory historical but for me it lacked a little of the emotional connection I've had when reading Philippa Gregory's stories.

Although I did find the story absorbing, the one weak spot for me was that I never really warmed up to Nan. Nan's self absorption and cunning made for good reading but I never felt very sympathetic towards her. It would have been nice if she rose above some of the actions of the other court players and was not so devious or self-centered but I believe the author showed her actions to demonstrate the reality of Tudor Times and the need for survival.

If you love historicals, (especially books by Phillippa Gregory) and thrill at dangerous intrigue this is a solid book you will not want to miss!

Don't Judge The Book By It's Cover
By Barbarino
This is the first novel I've read by Kate Emerson and I found myself pleasantly surprised by the story and the writing. I have to confess I am one who often judges a book by it's cover and I didn't care for this one. So, if you have a similar reaction I would urge you not to judge this book by it's cover.

I enjoyed this story and appreciated that the author included a family tree, two maps and a list of historical characters as resources for her readers. It's clear that Emerson has done her research on the period. I thought she did an excellent job of illustrating the politics in King Henry VIII's court and wove interesting bits of historical information into the narrative as well.

I would caution readers that there are spoilers written into the descriptions of the historical characters in the back of the book. So, if you are like me and don't want to know how the story ends until you read it you may want to post-pone reading that portion until you've finished the book. I also liked the way Emerson started each chapter with a passage from actual letters from the period that were about the historical figures in this story.

I know some readers might not care for the ambitious nature of the heroine's character but I think that it was a realistic portrayal of how many courtiers behaved. I thought the story was well paced, well researched and compelling. At first I wasn't sure I was going to be able to relate to the heroine because of her affection toward King Henry and I was concerned that the author was going to paint a picture of Henry VIII that would be inconsistent with everything else I've read about the man. But I thought she did a very good job describing the danger of being in King Henry's favor and painted a consistent portrait of the man himself.

While some readers will think it a negative to be compared to Philipa Gregory I have to say that this reminds me of 'The Other Boleyn Girl' and 'The Boleyn Inheritance', both of which I enjoyed. It also reminds me of 'Innocent Traitor' by Alison Weir and it made me want to read 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel.

engaging historical
By A Customer
In 1637 sixteen year old Anne "Nan" Bassett crosses the Narrow Sea from Calais, France to Dover, England along with her older sister Catherine. Nan wants to join the court as a maid of honor to Queen Jane Seymour. Surprisingly King Henry selects her to become a member of his wife's entourage.

When Jane dies in childbirth, Nan leaves the court to move in with her cousin, the Countess of Sussex. Henry not forgetting the élan of Nan orders her back to the court when he marries again and again. With intrigue everywhere inside Henry's court, Nan falls in love, but to survive she must give away her child as her family is no haven since they are caught up in Cromwell seditious activities.

The latest secret at King Henry's court (see Secrets of the Tudor Court: The Pleasure Palace) is an engaging historical starring a maid of honor who keeps her head by keeping her head in crisis. Based on a real maid of honor, Nan is a terrific heroine, but in many ways the aging monarch steals the show as the King seems to obsessively need to prove his manhood as he goes through a few more wives following the death of Jane. Fans will relish Kate Emerson's strong historical tale of life and death at King Henry's court.

—The New York Times

“Falk’s mix of anecdotes and biz tips is a page-turner.”
—Sports Illustrated

“A lot of people don’t like David, but he’s the best at what he does. He understands the market; he understands the players. He’s a brash, arrogant, egotistical, aggressive negotiator, which is good, because when you have someone represent you, you want him to do that.”

During his career, Falk has represented more NBA first-round draft selections, lottery picks, Rookies-of-the-Year, and All-Stars than anyone else in the athlete management business. In 1985, he negotiated Michael Jordan’s ground-breaking deal with Nike--the most successful endorsement relationship in history--and in the process coined the nickname “Air Jordan.” Falk negotiated the highest contracts in NBA league history for Patrick Ewing in 1985 and Danny Ferry in 1990. He also negotiated professional sports’ first $100 million contract in 1996 for Alonzo Mourning as part of an unprecedented free agency period in which FAME changed the entire salary structure of the NBA, negotiating over $400 million in contracts for its free agent clients in a six-day period.

In 1998, Falk sold FAME to SFX Entertainment, serving on SFX’s Board of Directors and in the Office of the Chairman. As Chairman of SFX Sports Group, Falk oversaw the acquisition of a dozen sports agencies that enabled SFX to represent approximately 20 percent of MLB and NBA players. Falk stepped down as Chairman in 2001 to pursue other interests. In January 2007, Falk re-launched FAME and currently serves as its Founder and CEO.

I'd Rather Have a Good Enemy than a Neutral Friend, and Other Lessons from Chairman John

In many ways, my career started when I met John Thompson, Jr.

Having grown up in a very modest background, I could never have imagined that I would meet and deal with high-profile individuals as diverse as senators and congressmen, even a president or two, not to mention superstar athletes, entertainers, and chairmen of many of the most influential corporations in America. But without question, the most influential person in my life -- other than my mother, who passed away when I was twenty-seven -- has been John Thompson.

The fact that John played such an influential role proves that hard work and commitment to excellence can be matched, if not trumped, by circumstance and good fortune. The twists and turns that brought us together were certainly not in the game plans either of us had crafted for our careers. That John became my first and, for many years, only coaching client is ironic, given the wisdom and guidance he has provided me over the years.

I had aspired to be an attorney since the age of ten. In fifth grade, a friend named Greg Mallow wrote in my autograph book that I should become a lawyer because I was "a good arguer." Joseph Weber, my maternal grandfather, was an immigrant who frequently served on grand juries in New York. Pearl Weber, my mother, dreamed that I would one day become a Supreme Court justice. Despite these strong influences, my only role model for being a lawyer was Owen Marshall of the eponymous television series in the 1970s. I had absolutely no idea what being a lawyer was all about when I graduated from Syracuse University in 1972 and not much clearer of an idea when I graduated from George Washington University Law School in 1975.

During my first two years of law school, I worked part-time for the Bureau of Land Management at the Department of the Interior and at the Washington, D.C., office of Sidley & Austin, a prestigious Chicago-based law firm. In Washington, the joke is that one out of every twenty-five males over the age of twenty-five is a lawyer. It seemed to me that most of them had an Ivy League background that I clearly lacked. At Sidley I was determined to overcome my lack of pedigree by sheer determination. Initially it seemed to be working as many of the younger partners entrusted me with legal research projects. But when the summer came, I was relegated to being a messenger when two "summer clerks" who were recruited from the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania arrived. If I had a chip on my shoulder about my lack of Ivy League pedigree when I interviewed for clerkships in law school, after the snub at Sidley it grew into a block. When Donald Dell finally allowed me to work -- for free -- at Dell, Craighill, Fentress & Benton, which was the law firm part of the sports agency ProServ, in the summer of 1974, I was committed to overcoming my lack of nurture with my compulsive nature.

At the end of that summer, Donald hired me as a part-time clerk. As a full-time law student, I was permitted to work twenty hours a week. My lack of personal pedigree and ProServ's surroundings better informed my approach. Donald Dell was a Yale man with a University of Virginia law degree; Lee Fentress went to Tulane and Virginia Law; Frank Craighill attended North Carolina and Virginia Law; and Michael Cardozo, the associate, was the grand-nephew of Supreme Court justice Benjamin Cardozo and a Dartmouth and Virginia Law School grad. I probably worked an average of sixty hours a week and went to school just enough to graduate. Later on, when I attained some success, I probably developed a reverse exclusionary discrimination against Ivy League types. Obviously it takes all types, but one of the questions you might ask about a player who grew up wealthy is whether that player is hungry enough to do what it takes. The need to achieve doesn't always come from pure economics. With the background I had, I knew I never wanted to make a living with my hands.

After I graduated, Donald finally hired me as a full-time associate for the princely sum of thirteen thousand dollars a year to work eighty to one hundred hours a week. I eventually became Donald's assistant, or chief of staff. I read his mail, attended many of his meetings, and received great exposure to the various parts of the business, from marketing to legal. But we were very different people. Donald operated by seat-of-the-pants instinct and intuition. I am extremely logical. I wanted to have a well thought out argument when I presented my position. Donald preferred to leverage his power. He would read and think for five minutes on the plane flight to a negotiation. From my perspective, he would wing it while I was always a nut about preparation. I loved the intellectual stimulation that came from trying to change an existing model, or making an impact on that model by analyzing the research and applying a measure of creativity to the results. That approach eventually defined groundbreaking deals for Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Juwan Howard, Danny Ferry, Alonzo Mourning, and dozens of others in the 1980s and 1990s.

John Thompson had been an all-American at Providence College in 1964. He ended up playing two seasons for the Boston Celtics, backing up Bill Russell in one of the more racially divided cities in America at the time. When John became Georgetown's coach in 1972, I was finishing my first year of law school.

Because salaries were so modest, even for the world champion Celtics, John lived in the home of a Boston couple named Harold and Mary Furash. They had no children and John became the closest thing they had to a son. I had met Harold a few times through Leon Frank, my future father-in-law, and Harold had told John about me.

John and I met for the first time in 1980 when John Duren was going to be his first player selected in the NBA draft. We made a presentation for ProServ to represent Duren and his teammate Craig Shelton. Both of them selected us, and we got the next big Hoya star, Sleepy Floyd, who became the No. 13 pick in the 1982 draft.

The Georgetown connection became a cornerstone of our basketball practice. Donald Dell and Frank Craighill had a longstanding relationship with Dean Smith at North Carolina, but I was never going to have a power position in that dynamic. Smith wanted to talk "CEO to CEO" and he insisted on Donald doing the deals for North Carolina's rookie players. For me, Georgetown represented an opportunity. Not only had John turned the program into a major college power, but the connection allowed me to move away from tennis. While I liked working with tennis players like Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith, I loved basketball. It also felt more comfortable because I grew up in an environment much closer socially and economically to basketball players than to tennis stars.

John boosted my career at ProServ by viewing me and promoting me, even to my boss Donald Dell, as an asset and talent independent of the company. But he also challenged my assumptions about people, race, success, and just about every other aspect of life. You always know exactly where you stand with John. He is wont to say "I'd rather have a good enemy than a neutral friend." This is one of the many lessons I have taken from our friendship. Only the depth of compassion and loyalty he extends to friends matches John's unshakable integrity.

Our personal histories no doubt helped John and I connect. My mother was the youngest daughter of immigrant parents and she became a teacher. She constantly urged me never to settle for second best: "Always shoot for the stars."

John's father was hardworking but uneducated, and his mother, though educated, could only find work cleaning houses in their segregated Washington, D.C., neighborhood. In his book Big Man on Campus, Len Shapiro writes that John's mother had a similar message for her son: "You can do anything you think you can. It's all in the way you view it. It's all in the start you make, young man. You must feel that you are going to do it."

The fact that we were both outsiders may be what drew us together -- John, a black man in the very white fraternity of major college coaches, and me, a Jewish kid with a mutt's pedigree. In any case, unlike Coach Smith at North Carolina, John Thompson preferred dealing with the underdog. At the time, we had a policy at ProServ that we would not represent coaches. I effectively created the rule because I was uncomfortable when coaches came to Donald asking him advice on their shoe deals or coaching contracts. Donald, either out of friendship or ego, really wanted to help them, but I was concerned it could adversely affect our ability to recruit players. My emphatic position was that if we helped the coach at Maryland, then the coach at Virginia might get upset. I thought we had to be neutral. Donald reluctantly heeded my advice and it became corporate policy.

That all changed in 1982 during a lunch with John. Like other coaches, he would ask me questions about business matters. While I was happy to provide some insight, I told him, "John, I would love to help you with these things, but you know we have a policy against representing coaches." Typical of him, John said, "I don't give a damn about your policy. I'd love you to represent me." He said this with such vehemence that I was floored. For one of the first times in my life, I had nothing to say. I was tongue-tied and all I could get out was "Well, okay. I'd love to do it." After my impassioned argument to Donald against representing coaches, I broke the policy.

The arrangement also allowed John to break from the rest of the Big East coaching fraternity. Dave Gavett, then the Big East commissioner, negotiated group deals for the coaches for product endorsements. A coach might get $3,000 to $4,000 as part of supporting a Big East official basketball deal, or something similar. I signed John with Wilson for $25,000 a year, which infuriated the other coaches and in turn delighted John. He wanted to be his own person and fel...

Too much self-aggrandization
By J. Liu
David Falk was undoubtedly one of most influential agents ever, and a pioneer that redefined the salary structure of the NBA. He doesn't, however, need to tell us every two pages. His accomplishments speak for themselves (and were much more substantial than I even originally thought), but he comes off terribly insecure with the endless self-promotion.

I've always been a huge NBA fan, and recently have become to appreciate the history of the game more. Plus, I love hearing little inside stories and backroom whisperings among people who are part of the NBA -- these little tidbits really enrich my appreciate of players, teams, and the game. Falk surely has thousands of such anecdotes, and when he chooses to share them, the book is phenomenal.

Instead, he spends far too much time self-promoting and glossing over complex questions when they might to lead to further questioning of David Falk. It's easy to tell when he takes too much credit for something -- he'll briefly mention a tremendous accomplishment where he plays a small part and leaves out the details the reader wants that David Falk either isn't a part of or doesn't know.

I thought there were maybe 5-6 things that I cared to learn after reading this book (and an added appreciation/understanding of who David Flak is, but probably not the same way he thinks of himself). I think that made this a worthwhile read, despite the fluff.

David Falk Loves Himself (and nobody else)
By J. Bond
This is the most boring, self centered book that I have ever read. Just read one chapter and throw the book away..better yet borrow it from a Library and save the money.

Falk takes credit for everyone and everything that is successful in pro basketball and leaves all faults to others. His attacks on the late Abe Polllin of the Washington Wizards shows a man with an mean spirited ego who can not abide in other people's opinions and actions.

If you enjoy fiction, you are better off reading a Harry Potter book..you will learn more.

the bald truth
By hoops fan
One of the worst written book ever -- makes the case for always using a ghost writer... Grammatical errors, jumping around from topic to topic without introductions, and really no coherent theme are just a few of the problems. Even so, Falk comes off as self-centered and shallow.. Yikes, what a waste of money this book is.

French Milk, by Lucy Knisley

Through delightful drawings, photographs, and musings, twenty-three-year-old Lucy Knisley documents a six-week trip she and her mother took to Paris when each was facing a milestone birthday. With a quirky flat in the fifth arrondissement as their home base, they set out to explore all the city has to offer, watching fireworks over the Eiffel Tower on New Year's Eve, visiting Oscar Wilde's grave, loafing at cafés, and, of course, drinking delicious French milk. What results is not only a sweet and savory journey through the City of Light but a moving, personal look at a mother-daughter relationship.

From Publishers Weekly
For her 22nd birthday—and her mother's 50th—Lucy Knisley and her mother went to Paris. For more than a month, they toured the City of Lights from their fifth arrondissement flat, exploring museums and cafes, taking photographs, eating pastries and drinking French milk, which Knisley says is sweeter than its American counterpart; she compares it with the influence we take in from our mothers. Knisley's first book is unquestionably a travel journal first and foremost: Lucy-the-writer is so close to Lucy-the-subject that at times the story lacks background and emotional complexity. But as a travel journal French Milk shines. Knisley's photographs from the trip punctuate sketches of her daily adventures and musings about graduating from art school, first love and having an adult relationship with her mother. Best of all are Knisley's portraits of home at the beginning and end of the book, which capture her childhood home and college life lovingly but with clear eyes. Knisley's cartoony drawings are pleasingly clean in one panel and tellingly detailed in the next. A word-of-mouth hit when it first came out in a self-published limited edition, French Milk will remind readers of their own early trips to Europe and of traveling in their 20s. (Oct.)

Too much food, too little insight into anything
By Reader
The illustrations are cute (kind of --- the author doesn't even look like the character in the drawings), but all she seems interested in is food, food, food... Pages and pages of goat cheese and foie gras and fondants... it gets old pretty quickly. Yes, we get it: you went to Paris with your mom and had great food and bought cool stuff every day. But this is not the Paris I want to see. The 'moving, personal look at a mother-daughter relationship' to which the back cover refers is nowhere to be seen --- the only things you learn about the mother are what she eats and the purses and coats she buys. And reading an overprivileged kid's whinings about missing sex and her boyfriend when given the opportunity to spend six weeks in Paris also got old fast.

"How am I going to get used to anything other than this unbelievable milk?"
By S. Fishburn
There were two books I was delighted to come across this month (the other one was Winter in Taos by Mabel Dodge Luhan). The first one, French Milk by Lucy Knisley, is an 193 page graphic journal, small-format, mostly drawings (with handwritten captions) and about 4 dozen full-page b & w photos. It encompasses a little over a month spent living in an apartment with her mum in the bustle of Paris right after Christmas the year the author (a comic book artist from Chicago) turned 22. It was first published in 2007. The travel details are just darling; there is a surfeit of delicious food described and illustrated, and flea-market finds and book reviews abound! Lucy is a bit self-absorbed and hormonal, but she realizes it, cracks (visual) jokes about it, and moves on (sort of).
Another reviewer suggested she would love a Knisley New York City travelogue. That would be cool, but NY has been done alot - how about a little volume about living and working in Chicago? Ms. Knisley?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Today, F. Scott Fitzgerald is known for his novels, but in his lifetime, his fame stemmed from his prolific achievement as one of America's most gifted story writers. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," a witty and fantastical satire about aging, is one of his most memorable stories.

In 1860 Benjamin Button is born an old man and mysteriously begins aging backward. At the beginning of his life he is withered and worn, but as he continues to grow younger he embraces life -- he goes to war, runs a business, falls in love, has children, goes to college and prep school, and, as his mind begins to devolve, he attends kindergarten and eventually returns to the care of his nurse.

This strange and haunting story embodies the sharp social insight that has made Fitzgerald one of the great voices in the history of American literature.

From Publishers Weekly
The impending release of a movie version starring Brad Pitt has made this humorous tale, formerly among the least known of Fitzgerald's short stories, a hot property. DeFillippis and Weir's adaptation preserves the original's straight-faced tone describing the career of a man who begins life in his 70s and grows progressively younger. If bystanders find this more than curious, they usually are just irritated at Benjamin for not behaving like other people. He himself is surprised as his body morphs, but is always open to new possibilities; his good-natured adaptability gives the social satire a gentle edge. Readers should, of course, look up Fitzgerald's original, but there's much to enjoy in this handsome little hardbound book. Cornell's sepia watercolor panels are especially clever at showing physical and emotional changes as Benjamin moves backward through life while America rolls forward for 70 years. A useful, gracefully written afterword by Donald G. Sheehy, professor of English, completes the volume nicely. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—In antebellum Maryland, the Button family is gifted with a wizened newborn whose physical age seems to grow ever younger over time. The scholarly afterword to this meticulous volume mentions the recent film adaptation of Fitzgerald's Jazz Age story, but it would be a mistake to assume that this volume has been created simply because of the media tie-in. It is a strikingly literal adaptation, re-creating dialogue, narration, and even chapter breaks with an assured and deliberate hand. While Fitzgerald's light tone is well preserved, it is the artwork that is the most striking, despite what could be construed as a dour use of gray and sepia. It is highly evocative, with an excellent use of facial expression to moving and comic effect. As the story obviously must address the particulars of physical age, Cornell depicts not just the transformation of Benjamin's face, but also his changing poise and confidence with well-rendered body language. While a thoroughly fine work, the lightly funny, softly satiric material will not produce peals of laughter, and the subject matter may strike teens as more unusual than engaging. Still, this is a work of quality that should find a small but appreciative audience.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

From Booklist
One of Fitzgerald’s (until recently) lesser-known stories, this satire follows the life of a man born as a septuagenarian who progresses through life backwards, becoming younger and younger each year. Here, the story is reproduced as a graphic novel, with sepia-toned art that lends itself to the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century time period. While this effort is admirable for the fact that it has Fitzgerald’s original text nearly intact (save some abridgement for the sake of dialogue), some of the time-sensitive satirical elements may not resonate with young readers. Still, growing old by growing young holds a certain universal curiosity, and extends the appeal of this to readers other than Fitzgerald fans or those looking for new entry-points into classic literature. Of course, the big-budget movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt will only amplify interest. An afterword provides some context for this work in the whole of Fitzgerald’s oeuvre, and offers a nicely ironic aside to his agent in which he despaired that it was unlikely this story “will ever bring me any movie money.” Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

My curiosity was satisfied with this rather peculiar tale...
By Andrew Ellington
I am not a huge fan of short stories, because it never fails that by the time I find myself invested in them I have reached the last page. Same can be said for `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', a rather delightful little story that is engaging, interesting and very rewarding. Yes, this is a short story, so I'm going to say this straight off; you may not want to invest your money in this version. I actually purchased another version from Amazon that has a few short stories for less money, so try you hand at that collection instead of this singular novel.

But, I wanted to take the time to review the story, because that's what these reviews are all about right, the work itself and not the packaging.

`The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' is a peculiar tale of a man born at the end of his life and has the rare opportunity of growing young, living his life in reverse as it were. F. Scott Fitzgerald states at the beginning of this story that it was inspired by a statement made by Mark Twain, that the best things in life happen at the beginning and the worst at the end. With `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' Fitzgerald plays the cynic, exploring how living life in reverse can be seemingly beneficial yet ultimately devastating.

Benjamin is born a brittle old man with a cane (not literally, but he needs one) and a full mind, and as the year's progress his relationships with those around him shift for various reasons. First he is at odds with his devastated parents who are ashamed of him, but as he grows to meet his father in age they become like brothers. He meets and falls in love with the young Hildegarde, who is attracted to the `older' Benjamin, only to marry her, grow younger than her, and drift apart from her. He takes over his fathers business and prospers because of his newfound energy, yet his youth begins to destroy him as his own son becomes his elder and is thus ashamed of the very sight of his father.

There is a moment within `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' where the elderly Benjamin (in mind, not in physicality) is attending kindergarten and is lamenting over the fact that the other children can talk about what they want to be when they grow up, a prospect that Benjamin will never see.

This to me captures the very point of this story.

Yes, this is a short story of a few pages and it moves rather quickly through Benjamin's life, but it is also written with such rich detail that one never feels jaded. I do wish that this had been written as a full length novel, for it surely has the potential to be one of the most refreshing and moving pieces of literature ever written. It is wildly original (although Fitzgerald himself has mentioned that he has read this prose elsewhere) and it is absurdly poignant. Yes, `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' has such a deep-rooted importance, for when you strip away the preposterousness of the prose there is a moral that is so humanly real we can feel it in the very pit of us.

We have all heard the phrase `the grass is greener on the other side' and this novel is the perfect answer back to that statement, for it proves that we shouldn't always be wishing for something we don't quite understand, because once we have it we may realize it is far from desired.

Beautiful book design, but what's inside?
By Stephen L. Powell
Tales of the Jazz Age (Penguin Classics Hardcover) does not contain the original contents of the 1922 book of the same title. This edition contains the following eight stories.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Head and Shoulders
The Cut-Glass Bowl
The Four Fists
May Day
'O Russet Witch!'
Bernice Bobs Her Hair
The Lees of Happiness

Of these stories five are also included in Flappers and Philosophers: The Collected Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald (Penguin Classics Hardcover). If you're buying these books as a book collector (like me) you'll want both titles because they are gorgeous editions. If however you're not intending on buying both I suggest purchasing Flappers and Philosophers instead as it has the majority of these stories plus many more.

AVOID THE "TIMELESS CLASSICS" EDITION
By J. A. I.
Avoid the Timeless Classics edition. It is a mess. Far from being "carefully formatted" it is in fact full of typos and odd formatting choices that distract and detract from the enjoyment of Fitzgerald's stories. If you wish to save money just download the free version which is certainly no worse than the awful Timeless Classic edition.

If you want a better file try one of the more expensive editions.

If anyone at the "publisher" (or at Amazon) cares I would appreciate a refund on this ebook or a free download of a better edition.
