Hi, y’all!

This book is my proudest achievement so far, and I just have to tell y’all why I am so excited about it. It’s a book of classic dishes, dedicated to a whole new generation of cooks—for every bride, graduate, and anyone who has a love of a great Southern meal. My family is growing and expanding all the time. We’re blessed with marriages and grandbabies, and so sharing these recipes for honest, down-home dishes feels like passing a generation’s worth of stovetop secrets on to my family, and yours.

I’ve been cooking and eating Southern food my whole life, and I can tell you that every meal you make from this book will be a mouthful of our one-of-akind spirit and traditions. These recipes showcase the diversity and ingenuity of Southern cuisine, from Cajun to Low-Country and beyond, highlighting the deep cultural richness of our gumbos and collards, our barbecues and pies. You may remember a few beloved classics from The Lady & Sons, but nearly all of these recipes are brand-new—and I think you’ll find that they are all mouthwateringly delicious. It is, without a doubt, a true Southern cooking bible.

I sincerely hope that this book will take its place in your kitchen for many years to come, as I know it will in mine. Here’s to happy cooking—and the best part, happy eating, y’all!

Best dishes,
Paula Deen

Paula Deen
By Sher
I don't normally buy items for a policical statement but this time I have. Paula has freedom of speech and I have the power of the buck. Today I bought this book AND a box of cheerios (in support of their ad that contains a mixed race marriage). Time for American to grow up beyond the age of ten years old, get over the polical correctness crap and get on with life.

Apologies TO Paula Deen
By Kris
Like the last reviewer (Sher) I have purchased this book in support of Paula Deen, who has been made a scapegoat by the American public. What really gets me is the hypocrisy behind it all! We've all made mistakes, stuck our foot in our mouths, said things we wished we hadn't, wishing we'd lived up to our better selves. I don't care if she is a public figure, she's human for God's sake! We are all "public figures" in the sense that we have a circle of influence that affects the larger world and we don't really know how that influence ripples out to affect strangers. Since there seems to be a double-standard for the use of the "N" word, maybe we need a rule book on its use: e.g., whites can't use it because they have to be politically correct at all times, blacks can use it among themselves, wealthy film producers can use it and make lots of money (they get a free pass). What? No rule book? That's silly? Well then, why don't we just nix the word and be a little kinder to one another!

Also, I loved the Cheerios mixed race commercial, and I think Sher had a great idea: I'm going to buy Cheerios as well - AND donate a bunch of boxes to the local food bank!

It's About Time!: 10 Smart Strategies to Avoid Time Traps and Invest Yourself Where It Matters, by Carolyn Castleberry

Award-winning reporter Carolyn Castleberry brings workable solutions to help women discover and apply the right strategies for time management in their lives, freeing them to invest themselves in what really matters.

American women are in a time crisis. They are doing more but enjoying it less. Fueled by both internaland external pressures, they run from task to task without pausing to ask themselves, “Do I really want to do all this stuff? Why can’t I get a handle on managing my time?” How can they find true time balance in their super-charged,over-scheduled lives?

Carolyn Castleberry co-host of ABC Family’s Living the Life, has not only asked herself these questions, but has interviewed countless accomplished newsmakers over the years. Determined to bring workable solutions to women, she commissioned a national survey of women. Roughly half of those surveyed felt busier than they did five years ago (50 percent), don’t feel there’s enough time to get everything done (45 percent), and say they don’t have enough time for themselves (43 percent). One in three women (34 percent) described themselves as overwhelmed.

This book delivers proven, effective strategies for time management. First, it offers women a chance to take a selftest to see where they fall on the “time-balance scale,” a tool to assist the reader in diagnosing her time-management style in order to apply the right strategies and biblical principles to fit her needs. Once diagnosed, readers discover the unique factors standing in their way of effectiveness. They explore the time traps to avoid—those habits, decisions, and disempowering thoughts and words that literally steal time. Then with smart, biblical strategies in place, readers discover how to select their true priorities and invest their talents, careers, and selves in living to do what really matters.

Time Crunched

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.

-- ECCLESIASTES 3:1 NIV

As a young woman, I took time for granted. Not anymore. Some of us understand intuitively that time is our greatest gift -- ours to invest for a lifetime. For others, like me, it takes a defining moment to realize that moments, hours, and days are all we have -- a defining moment followed by a complete shift in life priorities. It may be losing a loved one. It may be giving up on a dream. For me it was having two healthy babies and losing two babies, one in the second trimester of pregnancy. For years I had been a career woman and wasn't even sure I had time for kids. Time was all about me. But having and losing children -- struggling for the dream of motherhood I hadn't even realized was hidden deep within me -- caused me to reevaluate my time in a big way. More on my story in a moment...as we say on TV.

First let's talk about you. After all, it's about time. Yours. In decades of television and radio interviews, I've heard one consistent theme: American women are in a time crisis. "There's just not enough time," everyone seems to say. We're doing more but are less satisfied. Fueled by both internal and external pressures, we run from task to task without pausing to ask ourselves, Do I really want to do all this stuff? Am I investing my life where it matters? How do we manage to find the time to balance our supercharged, overscheduled lives?

To prove that I wasn't just imagining this time crisis, I commissioned a national survey on women and time (go to www.carolyncastleberry.com for the full scoop on how we put this together, who we interviewed, and verbatim comments from our participants). Sure enough, in an online survey of three hundred women, we found that 74 percent of them weren't happy with how they spent their time. That's three out of four!

Half of our group felt busier than they did five years ago (50 percent); nearly that many didn't feel there was enough time to get everything done (45 percent) and said they didn't have enough time for themselves (43 percent). Here's another finding that confirmed what women are saying -- one in three women (34 percent) described herself as overwhelmed. Listen to what some of the women said are their greatest time traps:

"Too many demands on my time from people who do not consider that I have other things to do"

"Too many activities at one time as a single mom"

"Expecting too much from myself"

"Letting others tell me how things should be done"

"Lack of ambition or drive to get things done"

"I just have a lot going on. I am a full-time everything."

How Do You Feel About Your Time?

Whether or not you are also a "full-time everything," how do you feel about how you are investing your time? We asked the participants in our survey to tell us how much they agreed with several statements that measure perceptions in these four important areas impacting time management:

• Outside Pressures

• Attitudes

• Smart Strategies

• Time Wasters

A significant proportion of women felt stress and dissatisfaction about time management. Based on these attitudes toward time, we identified five groups of women, each with distinctive characteristics. Chances are you'll see yourself in one of these "time groups" -- which range from women who felt overwhelmed when it came to time management (34 percent) all the way to those who were very organized and comfortable with their ability to effectively use their time (26 percent). The remaining 40 percent felt they needed some help in managing time and had specific challenges that keep them from doing so.

If you're looking for your basic, how-to-do-more-stuff time-management book, this isn't it. Instead, we'll look at the real reasons we're not investing our time the way we want to. You'll be able to identify the traps that are robbing you of your greatest asset. But here's the big difference between this book and many others: in these pages, we'll go way beyond simple strategies for time management because our results showed that a woman's relationship with time isn't determined by what she does or how much she is able to accomplish. Rather it's determined by how she feels about what she does. It involves your own relationship with time -- your personal scale of balance -- which is unique to you and is directly related to this key question: are you investing your life where it matters to you?

That's why this book won't focus on checking off more items on your to-do list. (Who needs that?) We won't be trying to get more done. (Oh, doesn't that feel good?!) In fact, in some cases you may find that the key to healthy time investment is doing less! (That's me.)

What Do We Want Anyway?

Interestingly, only one in four women had a clear idea of what really mattered to her and how to achieve it; in other words, goals. Only 22 percent of the women we surveyed felt they had an effective system for managing time, and only 27 percent had well-defined goals. That's close to the number that reported being happy with how they were investing their time on this earth. These are the women we call our Balanced Group, and we'll learn a great deal from them.

We also found that women fit into four other basic categories: the Overwhelmed (put me here for much of my life), the Procrastinators, the Pressured, and the Self-Stressed.

You Know Who You Are

The good news is there are solutions for all these groups, even if it's one baby step at a time. And my guess is that when you look at the list -- Overwhelmed, Procrastinators, Pressured, and Self-Stressed -- you intuitively know where you fit. Something inside tells us that somebody is causing all these time pressures or, dare I say, that we are the problem in our own lives. First, let's visit the four segments of women we found in our survey. Later in the book we'll address specific strategies to take back time for all of them.

The Overwhelmed

Women in this first group typically answer to the label of either Superwoman or Single Mom. Here are some more of their cries for help:

"I have entirely too much stress because I don't seem to have enough time and money to invest either one properly."

"I am not disciplined enough to stay on task; too many uncontrollable things demand my time...mainly my nine children!"

"I have too much on my plate at once."

Oh boy, I can relate! We may not have nine children (God bless you, dear soul!), but most of us have way too much on our plates at once. The Overwhelmed are the ones who feel the most unbalanced and out of control when it comes to time management. These women believe they have no time for themselves and that time pressures are constantly accelerating. They believe they cannot exercise control over their time. They feel helpless:

"I am unable to set goals."

"I am feeling overstressed and overwhelmed by the demands on my life. And I have a feeling of tiredness much of the time."

"I think that I feel overwhelmed by the quantity of what has to get done and when it has to get done by."

It's easy to see why many of the Overwhelmed women feel so out of control. This group tends to be younger and includes the highest number of single parents. For these women, just surviving each day appears to be the top priority. Because I was once constantly overwhelmed, my first ten strategies to take back time will begin with you, my friends (see chapter 3). Plus, I'll throw in a bonus ten, because we need them so badly.

The Procrastinators

The second group we identified is the Procrastinators. Thirty-one percent of the women we interviewed said they had this tendency. You know her. Maybe she's you. Maybe she's me, as I glance away from my computer screen to a little clutter pile growing on my desk. I'll get to that later. Our well-intentioned Procrastinator makes big plans, has big ideas, and makes a big list of things to do. But something happens along the way:

"I procrastinate. I know something needs to be done at work (I'm self-employed) or around the house, but I will find an excuse to have a friend visit or play with my pets or grandson rather than tackle it."

"I hate school but know it is important if I hope to advance in a career. In effect, procrastinating, homework, and working odd shifts prevent me from managing my time better."

"I hate to grocery-shop, always putting it off until there is nothing in the house to eat."

"I am lazy or there are just too many things going on at the same time."

I love their honest answers. One woman summed up her life in two words: bad habits. Whatever the underlying reason for their lack of motivation, these women had acquired some behaviors that were literally killing their time. Our top-ten smart strategies for our Procrastinator girlfriends (see chapter 4) will target time-stealing habits.

The Pressured

Working moms, this might be you. That includes stay-at-home moms who may also home school their kids and who are working harder than anyone can imagine. You want to talk about pressure? A producer I work with was caught in the "sandwich generation," and at one point her elderly father, two grandchildren, and the children's mother who was recently divorced all lived with her. Could you keep up with that? At times, she couldn't either! Students, career women, you can certainly relate to feeling pressured too. This third group tends to be largely married with children and feels weighed down by external forces:

"People have no idea of all I'm supposed to do."

"Everyone assumes I can do it, since I've done it before."

"My friends call me, day or night, even though they know I'm working."

"If I don't do everything my kids ask of me, I think they won't feel loved or cared for."

"I stay at home with my daughter, who is eight months old, and she is very hands-on at this stage in her life...my entire day is spent just taking care of her.

Help With Your Daily Schedule
By Irene's Book Reviews
A book about using your time wisely--who can't use a little extra help in the time area? This book helps you see better ways to handle your time based on your personality. Do you put work off or do you take on too much? Either way you will learn ways to improve your schedule. This book is all about how to change the habits that are causing you to waste your time. It also helps you see what priorities should take first place in your daily life.

There are four groups of people and how they handle their time. One group is the Overwhelmed person. This person is taught how to unclutter and delete the projects that do not belong in their schedule. There is also the Procrastinator. This personality is the hardest to get on track. The author does an excellent job at giving examples of ways to get yourself moving! There is also the Pressured person and those who cause themselves stress. Both are explained and excellent ways to improve both schedules are given.

This book is not just an easy read but also offers easy ways to keep yourself on schedule, no matter what your personality!

It's About Time
By Cornsilk
This is an excellent book if you wonder what your individual purpose is. The book helps you discover your passion if you don't know it and gives a lot of useful advice and insightful questions to help you live the life that you believe God has called you to live. We are going to use this book for our ladies retreat because we believe it has useful information for women in every age bracket and walk of life. At the very least it is a good book to have to refer back to occasionally to sharpen your vision for your life and how to fulfill it.

too religious
By tscutie
I wish when I checked out this book in the library I looked at the back jacket cover biography.
Had I done that i would have realized the author was very religious. That in it's own shouldn't matter and should not be a big deal except when a book talking about managing one's time wastes your time interjecting god into every sentence and passages from the bible. I do not believe god has anything to do with why we waste time or how we can manage our time better. Unfortunately, I only got to page 43 becasue I just couldn't take her religious take on how we can organize our lives and be more productive through god.
On page 43 she lists "Strategies to Tame Time Traps" and the first priority/strategy #1 is: Meet with god first who on page 47 she refers to as her CEO.
What a bunch of bull. There are many other books on time management out there, which focus on just that. I will be returning this to the library tomorrow!!!!

From Publishers Weekly
Russell (Dead Broke) walks a fine line between African American romantic suspense and pornography in this melodramatic tale of a misunderstood killer and the clueless woman who becomes his lover. "I don't think I could ever be raped," announces a horny female companion of the heroine, Audra Chandler, after a few drinks in a Miami, Fla., bar one night. "I enjoy dick entirely too much." Later, as Audra is about to enter her apartment, Dean Tyson, dubbed "the Turnpike Cop Killer" on the TV news, threatens her with a gun. Inside, Dean tells Audra he didn't mean to kill the two cops he shot earlier that day. Besides, he was angry at the time because he was trying to reach his seven-year-old daughter, Destiny LeAnn, who'd been molested by the girl's mother's pederast boyfriend. Torrid sex ensues. Is it a case of the Stockholm syndrome or just pure craziness that causes Audra to fall for Dean? Warning: this slick erotic thriller may offend women who have been victims of sexual assault.

Audra

All the local drunken regulars were at the local bar watching a search for a maniac when Kayla shouted out, "I don't think I could ever be raped. I enjoy dick entirely too much." She took everyone's attention away from the television.

"I think everyone heard you," Jackie, her seemingly shy friend said while nudging her.

"I don't care. None of these cheap bastards bought my drinks" -- she got even louder -- "and they never do, so I don't have to act like a lady for anyone in here."

"Yeah, but you never know who's listening," Jackie said, "and hearing you say something like that about sex could plant a bad seed in one of their sick minds."

"So what? I haven't had any in a while," Kayla said and pointed at a man across the bar. "If I planted a seed in your mind, let me know, 'cause you can have it, baby." Everyone around the bar laughed.

I don't know if it was what I was drinking or the fact that I too was longing for sex, but I found myself pondering her statement about rape. I secretly agreed with her. I couldn't see someone having to force me to have sex. I love it. Unless it was the neighborhood crackhead. What puzzles me is how she made the connection between the news story and sex. She was a bona fide freak. We were all gathered at the bar with our eyes glued to the forty-two-inch plasma television watching a tragic story unfold in our backyards -- literally. Some new faces were at the bar because they couldn't get to their houses. The Miami-Dade police had all streets within a ten-mile radius of the crime shut down as they vigorously searched for the maniac who shot and killed two police officers at a routine traffic check. Florida's turnpike was shut down, and police were randomly searching cars entering or leaving the Cutler Bay area. It was a hot mess on a Friday night.

Regularly scheduled television programming had been preempted all day. People were told to stay indoors, and those who lived in the area where the crime occurred were told to stay with friends or family until the situation was completely under control. It was crazy. I left work at five, took the train and a bus to get to my car only to be stuck in traffic for two hours because of some asshole with a death wish. He had to be suicidal, because as soon as they showed his picture on the news, a black man, everybody knew that the police would make Swiss cheese out of him the first chance they got.

"I wonder if they would've done all of this if he shot just the average person," Kayla asked her friend. "Those bastards would be at Dunkin' Donuts." A few of us laughed at that thought. Her ranting was nothing new; she came in all the time. We all gathered at this local watering hole several times a week like Christians meeting for Bible study. She always drank screwdrivers and she was always at the bar on Fridays at six thirty-five. I know because I get there at six fifteen.

I don't know how Sammie's became the hot spot for drinkers. It could be that drinks were always two-for-one, and the characters who walked through the door couldn't be found anywhere else, not even on soap operas. Tonight, a dude we all call Dirty Harry, because he is a white guy who always wears a cowboy hat, was there. I can always count on Harry to be there. It's sad but refreshing to see a familiar face. I also like seeing Anthony, a good-looking brotha who is a manager at some local office. He was better looking before he started having sex with half the women who hung out at the bar. Now he got one of them pregnant. Crystal, the sloppy drunk, has given all the male bartenders head. She always made sure to do a good job, so she expected more than just the two-for-one deal, but she was always too drunk to notice that she was still paying full price.

As we all know, the spirit of alcohol temporarily delays good judgment, so people around the bar go home together all the time, and then, "lo and behold," things are never the same again. You'll see Jamal and Tamika chatting it up week after week, then all of a sudden she'd rather stand up if the only seat at the bar is next to him. That's the result of the two-for-one special and a lonely Friday night.

I have also gotten caught up. The men of Omega Psi Phi used to stop by after some of their frat meetings on the first Saturday of every month. At times, it would be only four or five of them and other times it would rain purple and gold everywhere. The eye candy was sweet, and they would behave like dawgs, barking and hopping.

However, there was one guy in particular who caught my eye. I had nicknamed him Mr. Suave. He was very charming and I would have to change my underwear every time I saw him walk through my door. It was orgasmic. His essence just reeked sex. His dark brown chocolate eyes would stare at me from across the bar and would tell me just what he wanted. I hoped to God that he knew he could have it.

One glorious night seven months ago, it all came to fruition when I left my cell phone on the bar and went to the restroom. I returned to my phone and noticed a text message: "What color panties are you wearing?" It was from a number I didn't recognize.

"You have the wrong person," I replied.

Another text came in: "I beg to differ, Ms. Low-Cut Pink Shirt."

I glanced around the restaurant and bar in search of someone who knew me. "Who is this?" I asked.

"Answer my question and I'll answer yours."

I already had four tequila sunrises and probably needed to take my butt home, but oh, no. I wrote back, "Black...lace...thong."

"You look delicious."

"LOL! C'mon, for real, who is this?" I asked playfully.

"One of the bartenders said that you call me Mr. Suave." Before I could pick my mouth up off the floor, another message came in: "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Darryl."

I couldn't believe that we were talking...texting...or whatevering. "Hi, I'm Audra."

"Nice name, but I'd rather continue calling you what I've called you in my mind for weeks."

I couldn't even look up at him. I just stared at my phone. "What's that?" I typed.

"Sexy as hell," he wrote to me again. "May I call you that?"

"Sure." I blushed and finally glanced over at him. He wasstaring at me.

"May I join you?" he asked.

I could already feel my lower lips throbbing. "Yes, you may," I typed, fighting to be polite.

Darryl was six one or two, athletic build, dark chocolate, with striking and unique features and perfectly aligned pearly white teeth. He was handsome, smooth, and sexy. He was wearing khaki slacks, a beige shirt, and a speckled brown tie. I wondered how long I could wait before that tie was dangling in my face as he sweated on top of me.

He came over and sat next to me. We talked, and I blushed as the right corner of his upper lip curled when he smiled. I had a feeling we'd be lying naked somewhere together before midnight. Now, I don't make a habit of sleeping with strangers. But this guy had captivated my mind for weeks without ever speaking a single word to me, so I had to be honest with my body.

I didn't resist him that evening or any other evening since then. Darryl takes full control during sex. He doesn't "let" me do anything; he tells me what he wants me to do and I do it. I have these naughty fantasies of being forced, so he is perfect. He spanks me and likes me to call him Daddy. I love it! He roughs me up and puts it down hard-core like he is overdosing on Viagra pills.

Whenever we were done drinking, talking, and flirting, we were naked. As we spent time together outside of each other's bedrooms, he recognized a good woman in me. Darryl was 75 percent what I was looking for in a man. He was goodlooking, independent, employed, and educated, and we were sexually compatible. Problem? That other 25 percent. He had a girlfriend, a fear of commitment, was as selfish as a three-year-old with no siblings, and could express his feelings only when he was drunk. We've been together seven months now, and for the last five months he's been making up excuses for why he can't leave his girlfriend yet encouraging me to hold on. "It'll be just me and you soon enough. I'm working on it. Just let me do what I have to do, but don't leave me," he kept saying. The minute I found myself believing him I knew that I was playing myself.

It was now after eleven and the bar was crowded. Everybody seemed to be there except Darryl, who had promised he'd meet me for drinks. It seemed the more often we saw each other in private, the less I saw him at Sammie's, which told me that he was probably "relating" with some other chick who is normally in there. I sent him several messages throughout the night asking him to come over, until he finally wrote back to say he wasn't on his way and didn't know what time he would be. I text-messaged him back, "Fuck you."

"Here you go, Henry." I handed over my bill and forty dollars. "Keep the change." I headed out the door. The night air was awesome, but that's every night in Florida. I was feeling all the drinks I had and desperately wanted to be cooped up under a man tonight -- my man, or at least the one I was sharing. Damn, I was angry. My vibrator would hit the spot, but not like him.

I couldn't cry to my best friend, Casey. She'd say, "As I've said a million times, fuck Darryl. Call somebody else. I don't know why you waste your time with his ass anyway, he doesn't even like black women. He's not gonna leave that Spanish chick for you. Can't you see that?"

She's right, but I would never tell her that. I was faithful to Darryl because I hoped that someday he'd choose me. I ignored the fool he was making out of me every day. I went into our relationship knowing about his girlfriend. I thought I could handle it since our relationship was purely sexual. But now that I've turned the page and fallen for him, I get physically ill when I know that they're together. However, all it takes is for him to tell me he loves me. Then my heart is tranquilized and I'm willing to wait another day.

On my drive home, Casey called. "Wow, you answered! Let me guess, Darryl is nowhere to be found?"

Of course, I w...

No.... I'm sorry...
By Jason Frost
OK, only real talk allowed here. After reading `Fly on the Wall', I was on hot pins and needles waiting for `Bedroom Bully'. After the heat in that book I just knew this one was going to be the same. Unfortunately, it was not. The sexual scenes were hot but the one thing that kept throwing me off was the plotline. I know when you read fiction you must willfully suspend your disbelief in the "real world" or you won't enjoy yourself. To be honest, that is THE reason I read fiction; I want to be taken away to a fictional world. But too many things in this novel made me go, "no freaking way" and "you gotta be kidding me".

Willing suspension of disbelief is one thing, having me believe the impossible is another. Yes, there were a number of very funny scenes in this book and yes, there are a few hot sexual scenes. However, the plotline that glued them together was peppered with one "what the heck" after another. This book was good enough for me to have finished it, it wasn't so bad that I won't read anything else by Trista, but I cannot recommend it.

Great Read!
By L. Cox
Could you have sex with a fugitive let alone fall in love with one. Well enter the world of Audra Chandler, while waiting for her so called boyfriend Daryl at a local bar she hears of the infamous "turnpike killer". Not really scared of the idea of a fugitive on the lose she she heads home after finding out that Daryl will not be joining her. Upon entering her home she is approached by whom she at first assumes is Daryl until she feels the gun pressed against her side.

Dean Tyson is on the run after shoot two police officers after being pulled over and verbally assaulted by one of the officer. the shoot out never would of have had Dean been in his right stated of mind but after finding out that his 7 year old daughter was being molested by her mother's new husband all common sense and logic went out the window. After ditching his car and running around aimlessly he needs a place to rest and wrap his mind around everything that as happened in the last couple of hours. He sees Audra entering her apartment and their story begins.

This is a modern day love story and Trista did a phenomenal job of bring the heat. Audra and Deans sexually attraction basically leaps of the pages. Ms Russell tells a drama filled story of forbidden love. How far would you go for the one you love? I gave this book five stars I was captivated from beginning to end and loved every minute of it.

"A SEXY, SEXY READ!!"
By Blessed One
This is the first book I have read by Trista Russell and it was a pretty good read.

[NO SPOILER ALERT!! READING THIS REVIEW WILL NOT SPOIL THE BOOK FOR FUTURE READERS!!]

Trista did an excellent job at painting pictures of the characters for her readers. I was able to get a good visual of the characters as I read along. As an avid book reader, I understand that is not always easy to do. The author also does an excellent job at keeping the attention of the reader. The plot was interesting. Although it was a bit 'out there' it was not beyond belief. As I read along, I thought to myself, "this COULD happen." That made a difference for me. The sex scenes had me exhaling and saying, "oh my!" The rationale of Dean Tyson was reasonable, considering why he was on a rampage, but the author did go a bit far with the racist cop.

RECOMMENDATION: If you like sexy, erotic suspense, then GET THE BOOK!!! Russell handles her own in the 'arousing sex scene' department. This book will have you wishing a 'turnpike killer' would greet you at your door....OMG!!! Without a doubt, it was a page turner. I read the book in a day, and found myself having to harnace my eyes' desire to jump over to the next page before I actually read to it. That is a huge compliment to any author.

On the flip side, there is a reason why I am only able to give this title 4 stars. Although it was a good read, the storyline was a tad bit far-stretched. At times, I was concerned that it would become too unrealistic, but Russell managed to keep me grounded. The end of the book began to lose me a bit. The main character, Dean Tyson, began to do things that were contradictory to the picture Russell had been painting of the character for the entire book. It was a bit confusing. It was almost like Russell ran out of steam or was getting pushed by the publisher to finish the title. The end left much to be desired.

I try to make it a habit for read others' reviews on a title, to help me take a definitive stance in my own review of the title. I am happy that I read this book, and I am excited about reading more of her works. After reading the other reviews, "Fly On The Wall" looks like it needs to be my next read. Keep a look out...reviews will be coming for that title, as well.

COMMENDABLE JOB TRISTA...4 STARS FROM ME!!

[And Trista-Girl, thank you for making Dean out to be built like an "real man" because I hope most of us know, most men are not equipped with the tools of a 'perfect looking stripper'. And in most cases, big is not best. The "just right" and realistic size of Dean Tyson is just what we need...realistic and "just right!"]

Introduction

I Wrote This Book

for Four Reasons

1. Because We're Never Too Young or Too Old to Learn Life's Greatest Lessons...and the Time Is Always Right

I was a teacher for thirty-five years and loved virtually every minute of it. I had the best of all worlds -- I taught kids in a public high school, adults in a Jesuit university, and spoke often to children at the elementary- and middle-school levels. I discovered long ago that regardless of age, people are eager to learn when it means understanding life more deeply and living it more fully. The letters and e-mails I receive from young children, teenagers, and adults confirm this on an almost daily basis.

Saint Ignatius Loyola, one of the world's greatest educators, once said that we only learn when we're ready to learn. In my lifetime, I've never experienced a period like the present in which so many people are not only open to learning, but also to re-examining their values and priorities. After enjoying a sustained period of unprecedented technological and economic advancements, our world has been shaken. The "dot-com" phenomenon imploded; the stock market and the economy took a nose dive; the events of September 11, 2001, both grieved us and reminded us of our vulnerability; and the corporate scandals of 2002 further shocked and dismayed us.

As one who's studied and taught history for many years, I know that tough times ultimately bring out the best in us. When people start asking questions about what's really important, they usually find the right answers. I'm pleased and honored that my book is helping the process.

2. Because They Don't Teach "How Life Works" or "What Is Essential" in School

Our schools, for the most part, do a great job. From first grade through graduate school, they offer a multitude of courses which result in increased knowledge and valuable skills. But there's something missing in the curriculum. We don't teach our students about life itself, about how it works or about what's essential. Never has there been a greater need for that.

We need someplace other than the proverbial "school of hard knocks" to acquire the right tools for succeeding in life. We need help in developing the attitudes and skills necessary to establish satisfying relationships, to set and achieve personal goals, and to enjoy feelings of self-worth.

As an educator, I felt this need for many years. But my pleas fell on deaf ears. Administrators were more concerned with test scores and budgets. Helping our students develop into good human beings didn't seem to be the school's responsibility. So I wrote this book to fill a void, to help us and our kids understand what's important, what good character is, and what it means to be successful in life.

3. Because Most of Us Need Help in Discovering How Good We Can Be

A few years ago, while attending a conference, I heard a psychologist say that by the time a person reaches the age of eighteen, he or she has been put down more than a hundred thousand times. I don't know how he came up with that figure, but it wasn't surprising. The truth is: we do get put down too much. It starts at an early age, comes from a variety of sources, and continues well into adulthood. In addition, the news media tells us every day what's wrong with the world and its people. This daily barrage of negatives takes its toll. The more frequently we hear something, the more likely we are to believe it.

It's not my purpose to examine why this happens, but simply to point out that it's one of the unfortunate truths about life. I wrote this book because I think we need help in focusing on the other side of humanity. I happen to believe that the overwhelming majority of people in the world are law-abiding, loving, and caring. They just don't get any publicity for it. Being good doesn't make the news. I also believe that most of us sell ourselves short. We have good qualities we're unaware of, have inner resources we haven't discovered, and have opportunities we never dreamed of. I hope this book brings out some positives in a world that seems to dwell on negatives. Finding the good in life can be one of our greatest joys.

4. Because Old-fashioned Truth Never Goes out of Style...Even with a New Generation

About a year before I wrote the first draft of this book, I gave a talk called "The Real Meaning of Success" to a group of college students. I began by pointing out some of the messages we get bombarded with constantly. I wanted them to know that my message would be quite the opposite. So I started by telling them what I didn't have: I had no "secrets" of success, no "magic formula" for complete happiness, no "amazing new techniques" for attaining the American Dream, no "quick and easy" way to become rich and powerful, and no "unique" method for getting everything we want.

Instead, I spoke that day about such time-honored values as respect, kindness, honesty, appreciation, desire, hard work, commitment, and just being a good person. My point was that there's no shortcut, no easy way, and no new method for achieving real success. It still has to be earned.

I was both surprised and pleased that so many of them stayed afterward. One of them said, "You know, you didn't really say anything I hadn't heard before, but you put it together in such a way that it made more sense. You really shed new light on some old truths." Then an elderly faculty member who was standing nearby said, "Thanks. We all need to be reminded about what's really important." Here were a young man just starting college and an older man nearing the end of his career telling me the same thing. Boy, did I love those two! They helped me decide that I had to write this book.

About the 20 Things

Why twenty? There's no profound reason. Probably because thirty is too many and nineteen doesn't sound right. Twenty just happened to be a nice round number that fit with what I had to say. I don't claim they're the only twenty things we need to know, just that they're some of the most valuable. They're twenty things I wish I'd known when I was younger. It wasn't until I was in my late thirties that I figured out how life works. Maybe these twenty things will help someone else who's still trying to figure it out. Actually, we need to do more than simply understand. To know them is one thing; to apply them is quite another. As an ancient Chinese proverb tells us:

I hear...and I forget

I see...and I remember

I do...and I understand

Success Is More

Than Making Money

Success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is in the doing, not the getting -- in the trying, not the triumph.

Wynn Davis

Life's Most Important Discovery

I was thirty-nine when I first understood what it meant to be successful. What did I do? Become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company? Drive home in my first Mercedes? Win the lottery? Take home the grand prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? None of the above. I just made a simple, yet profound, discovery. I discovered how life works and what its essentials are. After years of missing the point, I began to understand what it means to succeed in life and how to go about it. With this discovery came two things that had always eluded me: a sense of inner peace and a feeling of self-worth. And best of all, I began to enjoy life more than ever before.

So what was this great discovery? Is there really a formula for becoming successful? I'm convinced that there is. But you won't find it wrapped up in a nice, neat package and advertised on TV. It's not new, it's not a secret, and there's nothing magical about it. Therefore, it won't sell. It's too old, too simple, and too innocent. But it works.

After years of studying history, philosophy, and psychology, I realized that life and success can be reduced to some fundamental principles that have been around for thousands of years. After following several different paths in search of "the good life," I ended up back where I'd started, and with what I now call old-fashioned truths. As Edward Albee says in his play The Zoo Story, "...sometimes it's necessary to go a long distance out of the way in order to come back a short distance correctly."

Does this book contain the formula? Will you find it within the "20 Things"? I hope so. I honestly believe that if you apply these age-old principles consistently, you'll both understand and experience the true meaning of success. A Swedish proverb tells us that we get old too quick and smart too late. Maybe that doesn't have to happen. Maybe my book will help you get smart earlier than I did. And even if you're older, it's never too late to learn. The smartest people in the world are the ones who know how to be happy.

Success and Money

We can't seem to make up our minds whether money is good or bad. When someone is described as successful, it usually means he or she is wealthy. So it must be good. But they say money can't buy happiness. So it must be bad. Wealthy people contribute billions of dollars each year to worthy causes. So, it's good. But haven't we heard that money is the root of all evil? Now it's bad again. People who aren't rich criticize those who are, but would love to be rich themselves. So, which is it, good or bad?

It's neither. But because we live in a society which so often equates money with success, it needs to be examined. Some of the myths about it need to be clarified, and it needs to be placed in a proper perspective. There are two points I'd like to make about money:

1. Money is not bad

Does it really say in the Bible that money is the root of all evil? No. It says the love of money is the root of all evil. That's quite a difference. There's nothing wrong with money. There's nothing wrong with wanting it, and there's nothing wrong with having it, even in large amounts. The keys are how we earn it and what we do with it. Honestly acquired and well spent, money can be a resource for much good. Can it buy happiness? Whoever said that it can't probably didn't have enough. Actually, it'll buy a lot more happiness than poverty will. I think Pearl Bailey best described it when she said, "Honey, I been poor, and I been rich. And let me tell you, rich is better." It probably is better in most cases. There's nothing illegal or immoral about being rich, but it isn't everything.

2. Money isn't all there is to being successful

During the 1980s, we constantly read and heard about how many people were becoming millionaires...and how many millionaires were becoming billionaires. Some of the most celebrated among them went to prison. Ivan Boesky, one of the financial wizards of the day, even went so far as to say, "Greed is good." He said it a few months before being indicted by a federal grand jury. He was willing to say in public what many were feeling in private: success and wealth are synonymous.

Now we look back on the quest for wealth in the 1980s as being somewhat mild. That was just a warm-up for the dot-com and stock-market meteors of the 1990s. We learned on an almost daily basis who the new "instant billionaires" were, and countless people were risking their health, relationships, and resources to join the ranks. And all too often, ethics and some of our most cherished values took a backseat to wealth and the accompanying lifestyle.

The corporate scandals, still unfolding as I write -- at Enron, Arthur Andersen, Tyco, Xerox, WorldCom, and others -- are perfect examples. At Enron, for instance, the company and its executives were on top of the world. But they were toppled because of the way they got there. Their empire now lies in ruins. And because of what Newsweek magazine called "executive avarice" and the "greedy, go-for-broke ethos" of the corporate world, thousands of innocent employees and investors lost their jobs and much of their life savings.

This is what happens when we lose perspective on money. Life gets distorted. It wasn't just those who went to prison in the 1980s or went bankrupt in the 1990s and the early 2000s who lost themselves in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Many of those who made large amounts of money legally and managed to hold on to it were still coming up empty. The Tom Peters Group conducted extensive interviews with thousands of business executives during this period. Almost half of them said that despite years spent striving to achieve their financial goals, their lives seemed "empty and meaningless." Sixty-eight percent of the senior executives interviewed said they had neglected their family lives to pursue professional goals.

These are people who had money, property, power, and status. Why weren't they happy? Because having those things is not the same as being successful. They'd lost sight of what was essential. They got addicted, becoming slaves to big money and the things that go with it. In the process, they damaged their own lives as well as the lives of others. Success is more than making money. To overemphasize its importance is to cheat ourselves out of the other things that make life so much more interesting, meaningful, and rewarding.

What Does It Mean to Be Successful?

The great philosopher Thomas Carlyle once wrote, "Let each become all that he was created capable of being." I can't think of a better definition of success. Life challenges us every day to develop our capabilities to the fullest. We're successful when we reach for the highest that's within us -- when we give the best we have.

The quote at the beginning of this chapter says that success is in the doing, not in the getting. I can't emphasize that point enough. Life doesn't require us to always come out on top. It asks only that we do our best at each level of experience. This is what successful people do in some of the most important areas of life:

• Successful people accept life as it is, with all its difficulties and challenges. They adapt to it rather than complain about it. They accept responsibility for their own lives instead of blaming or making excuses. They say YES to life in spite of its negative elements and make the most of it, no matter what the circumstances.

• Successful people develop and maintain a positive attitude toward life. They look for good in others and in the world, and usually seem to find it. They see life as a series of opportunities and possibilities, and always explore them.

• Successful people build good relationships. They're sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. They're considerate and respectful. They have a way of bringing out the best in other people.

• Successful people have a sense of direction and purpose -- they know where they're going. They set goals, accomplish them, and then set new goals. They accept and enjoy challenges.

• Successful people have a strong desire to learn: about life, the world, and themselves. They see learning as a joy, not a duty. They continually enrich their lives by learning new things and improving themselves. They are always discovering, always growing.

• Successful people are action-oriented. They get things done because they're not afraid of hard work, and they don't waste time. They use it in constructive ways. They don't get into ruts or become bored because they're too busy looking for new experiences.

• Successful people maintain high standards in their personal conduct. They know that honesty is one of the main ingredients in the character of a good person. They are consistently truthful in both their private and public lives.

• Successful people understand the difference between existing and living, and always choose the latter. They get the most out of life because they put the most into it. They reap what they sow. And they enjoy life to the fullest.

Our Potential for Real Success

In our society today, large numbers of...people never fulfill their potentialities. Their environment may not stimulate such fulfillment, or it may actually stunt growth....Our strength, creativity, and growth as a society depend upon our capacity to develop the talents and potentialities of our people.

John Gardner

I kept this quote posted in large letters in my classroom for many years. It served as a reminder for both me and my students that there's more of us to be realized. John Gardner was a former secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, the founder of Common Cause, and the author of several books. He wrote in Excellence that too many of us never fully develop because of influences in our environment. I agree. We simply get blitzed with too many messages that don't have anything to do with real success. We're urged to look for the quick fix rather than to look inside at our own resources. If we don't look, we don't find, and our capabilities remain hidden. We end up seeing limitations instead of possibilities.

But there's a positive side to all of this. Once we're aware of it, we can do something about it. That's why I had another quote posted next to Gardner's:

The good news is that the best season of your life can be ahead of you no matter what your age or circumstances -- if you choose to make it so -- because 90 percent of your potential is not only untapped and unused, but also undiscovered. That's not just good news, it's incredible news!

Tim Hansel

Tim Hansel is an adventurer, speaker, author of six books, and a man who daily squeezes everything he can out of life. He's also a former colleague and a dear friend. When we taught a psychology class together several years ago, we constantly urged our students to look inside -- to discover what was good about them and to recognize how much potential they had. We encouraged them to be more and do more. Surprise! They were eighteen years old and had never heard things like that before.

About a year later, I began to issue the same challenge to my students at the University of San Francisco. Most of them were in their thirties and forties, some older. Guess what? They'd never been taught anything about their potential, either. At the end of a great class discussion on it one evening, a forty-seven-year-old woman seemed to sum things up when she said, "You know, you're right. We spend too much of our time just going through the motions. We don't seem to realize our potential." But as Tim reminds us in his quote, it's good news that so much of us is still undiscovered. That's one of the main messages in this book. Whether we're young or old, whether we have a ninth-grade education or a Ph.D., we can always learn more about our potential for becoming the persons we were meant to be. If we look inside, we'll find all the resources we need for real success.

To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life.

Robert Louis Stevenson

THE DEFINITIVE, AUTHORIZED ORAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE AMERICAN ICON The winner of every major national literary award, the preeminent novelist of his generation, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, a movie director, politician, pugilist, antiwar activist, hipster, philosopher, and enfant terrible, Norman Mailer has been maligned, loved, hated, belittled, idolized - but never ignored. This sweeping biography captures the legend's extraordinary life and career in his own fascinating words and in vivid accounts by his famous peers, friends, enemies, wives, lovers, and family members. Mailer is an extraordinary tapestry, a portrait of an era as well as a man - as protean as the subject himself and just as overflowing with life.

From Publishers Weekly
Based on interviews with more than 200 people, this gigantic book is not so much biography as a skillful compilation of multiple versions of events in the life of Norman Mailer. Not surprisingly, we are reminded that Mailer is often competitive, belligerent and drunk in public; on the other hand, in private he can be courteous and considerate. "Reading this book is an exciting, irresistible experience," PW stated.

Alas, Poor Manso
By Christopher Busa
I read Manso's oral biography when it first came out in 1985, smitten by the matrix of competing testimony that somehow balanced out the extremes, and made Mailer seem alive, animated with ambiguity, endearing in his flaws, and audacious in his ambition. Now, in this new edition, Manso has added an afterword, detailing the breakup of their friendship and working partnership. He has lost all sight of Mailer as a subject of biography. In sixty pages of unfocused anger, he attacks the very people who were crucial to Mailer's life since Manso's account ended. He gives us a picture of the great author as a desearate to keep his name before the public with a series of what Manso calls "non-books," ignoring the accomplisments of key books written after their breakup, including Gospel According to the Son and the Castle in the Forest. He badmouths Mailer's biography of Picasso as a plagiarism of John Richardson. His screed is especially mean-spirited toward the very people Mailer drew around him in his last years: Larry Schiller, J. M. Lennon, and his wife Norris. Toward Norris, he is most poisonous, willfully distorted each positive attribute into a hideous caricature. I felt a flush of shame pass across my face, shame that Manso should fall so low as to rage against the man he so admired. In the afterword, Manso also belittles Provincetown Arts, the magazine I edit, saying that I rejected an excerpt for his 2002 book "Ptown: Art, Sex, and Money on the Outer Cape." Indeed, I did, but not, as Manso said, because I wanted to make cuts unacceptable to him, but rather because Manso came over to my house and demanded that I put his name in a banner across the logo on the magazine's cover, saying that Vanity Fair did so when his Brando book came out. The cover feature that year was Sebastian Junger, author of the Perfect Storm, and Manso said, "I'm as famous as Junger--I want equal billing!" Mailer's egotism posseses charm, Manso's arid self subsists on its own festering bile.

Good
By A Customer
I'm a fan of oral biographies, of which this is one. I like the immediacey of collected interview quotes, so like the way this book was presented. It's an interesting look at Mailer's life. The bit that impressed me most, was the example of the liberal elite giving a free pass to Mailer for committing a violent crime because he was one of theirs. When Mailer stabbed his wife, sending her to the hospital for a good stay, and himself to an insane asylum, the New York liberal elite pretty much excused Mailer for his behavior! The cocktail party talk about Mailer in Fifth Ave apartments was that Norman must have been a little upset, etc. He was in their clique so it was okay! It was a total duplication of the liberal elites' excusing of Bill Clinton's raping Juanita Broaddrick (read Christopher Hitchens' book NO ONE LEFT TO LIE TO for more on that). Hitchens interviewed three women who independent of each other said Bill Clinton raped them. But the liberal elite excuses Bill Clinton because he's one of theirs! I can't help but think that being a member of the liberal elite is like being the member of a cult. Anyway, it's stuff like this that makes Manso's biography of Mailer worth reading.

Notes of a Displeased Groupie
By Ted Burke
Author Peter Manso published a highly readable oral history of his then-hero and mentor Norman Mailer in the '80's titled " Mailer: His Life and Times". Manso, a good writer in all other respects, has republished the book with a lengthy afterword in which he repays the insult Mailer had paid him when it turned out the biography displeased him greatly. Mailer and Manso were close friends during the eighties, with Manso admitting as much that he was , more or less, Mailer's acolyte. The pair even shared a beach front house in Provincetown , Rhode Island. Mailer had written to the local paper ""P.D. Manso is looking for gold in the desert of his arid inner life, where lies and distortions are the only cactus juice to keep him going." Ouch, that hurts. But what puzzles me is that Peter Manso has seemingly nurtured the hurt for over thirty years and now takes a few too many pages to give his account, share gossip, insult Mailer friends. The aggrieved author seems less a wounded innocent than a gold digger . The lesson, I suppose, is that one ought not live with their heroes. I'd agree that Manso's Mailer biography is a fascinating read as far as it goes; it's hard to go astray when you've a group of interesting people giving an intimate account of a singularly intriguing and often brilliant personality like Mailer. But based on this, Manso's introduction to the new edition just sounds like sour grape he wants everyone to take a sip from. The problem with having heroes who embody every virtue and ambition one wants to cultivate for their own is that heroes will betray you, intentionally or otherwise. I've no idea what went on between the two men while they occupied that beach front property, but it's very possible Mailer had other things he wanted to do besides listen the sound and sight of a dedicated fan- boy sucking up; perhaps Manso crossed over from being a mere acolyte and exhibited a malignant sycophancy. Or maybe not; Manso would have served himself better getting over a three-decade old slight and finessed his remarks a tad more. It was Mailer's particular genius to make himself , as subject, fascinating in ways a reader wouldn't have suspected. That same talent isn't Manso's. Would that he merely republished his worthy oral history and gone onto another book.
