About the Author
Annelise Freisenbruch was born in 1977 in Paget, Bermuda, and moved to the UK at the age of eight. She studied Classics to postgraduate level at Cambridge University, receiving a PhD in 2004 for her thesis on the correspondence between the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and his tutor Cornelius Fronto. During that time, she also taught Classics at a private school in Cambridge. She has worked as a research assistant on a number of popular books and films about the ancient world, and regularly gives talks to schools about Classics in popular culture. Annelise Freisenbruch was the researcher to Bettany Hughes on her critically acclaimed book Helen of Troy (Vintage). She was also a specialist series researcher on the BBC1 docu-drama series Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire, and is currently working on films on Attila the Hun and Spartacus for the BBC. Annelise holds a PhD in Classics from Cambridge University and has worked as a freelance history researcher in the media for the last four years. She lives in Cambridge, where she teaches Latin to middle-school children. Caesars' Wives is her first book.

Finally I am clear on who married who!

Finally I am clear on who married who! She provides extensive genealogies for three sets of Empresses: (I) the Julio- claudian empresses (they were wild!), (II) the others who came after (also interesting characters), and (III) the Christian Empresses before the Empire fell. This is a for real history book, footnotes and all, so do not expect the story to be a soap opera embellishment. The truth is crazy enough--without any embellishment, you have marriages, adoptions, poisonings, maneuvering for succession, adoptions, assassinations, religious insights--all on the grandest scale imaginable--the truth, as extensively researched, is fascinating enough on its own!

Caesars' Wives are much more interesting that the real housewives of TV notoriety

Caesars' Wives is the first book by Dr. Annelise Freisenbruch. The author was born in Bermuda, raised in England and sports a Ph.D from Cambridge University! Not bad for a young woman in her early 30s! Friesenbruch has also done work as a freelance classical historian for the British Broadcasting Company.
Caesars' Wives covers in detailed prose the lives of the most prominent imperial spouses in the four hundred years from the Julio-Claudian emperors of the first century AD. to the end of the Roman empire in 476 AD. Wives discussed include such colorful and murderous wives as Livia who was married to Augustus for over fifty years and their infamous daughter Julia Also chronicled are important rulers from the eastern empire. Especially to be noted are Cleopatra VII the wife of Mark Antony; Berenice the Judean princess who wed Titan and Helena who was the mother of the first Christian emperor Constantine.
The problem I had with the book is there are so many names and dynasties to keep track of it boggles the mind of the historicla layman! This is particularly true as the book nears its 465 page end. It is a well researced book written in a scholarly style. Freisenbruch has done her homework quoting extensively from such ancient authors as Suetonious, Dio Cassius,
Pliny, Ovid, Tacitus and countless others both pagan and Christians.
The book could well be used as a resource in a collegetiate level course on the Roman Empire. Along with information about the women we find good descriptions of changes in fashion, childbirth customs and the role of women in the ancient world. A good book by a fine young classical scholar. Look upon it as "I Claudius" and "Rome" (TV programs on the period covered in this book) put in print and viewed from a female perspective. The book includes illustrations of coinage and portraits of many of the women mentioned in the text.

Unfocused presentaiton

No single book can tell the story of the Roman Empire. The best any one book can do is focus on one aspect and tell the story of Roman Empire through that focus. Through the lives of the notable women of the Empire -- not just those who were married to a Caesar - Annelise Freisenbruch gives us the history of Imperial Rome.
Anyone familiar with the history of the Roman Empire knows that recounting the historical narrative is difficult; many historical figures are known by multiple names and the same name is common to many historical figures. Frisenbruch included multiple genealogical charts to help the reader navigate through the morass of names.

However, Frisenbruch's style of writing adds to the confusion. For instance, in the first paragraph of chapter one, the story begins with Nero and his seventeen year old wife, Livia, running for their lives in a burning forest. In the next paragraph, the text jumps to the political fallout following the assaination of Julius Caesar. This is followed by a comparison of Livia to Cleopatra which is followed by a brief biography of Nero. Nowhere in the chapter does the author take the reader back to the burning forest and how Nero and Livia made their escape.

Similarly, chapter five begins with a discussion two plays about the emperor Titus and his mistress Berenice. These are plays that premiered in 1610! Berenice's story is quite an interesting historical figure; she is even mentioned the Bible. It would have been a lot clearer for the author to recount her story first and then report that in the Middle Ages her life was made into competing plays -- not the other way around. The confusing style continues in chapter eight. That chapter begins with a discussion of a 1950 historical novelization of the life of Empress Helena. As the first Christian Empress, Helena's story is very important not just within the history of the Roman Empire, but the history of early Christianity as well. The reader doesn't need a reference to a book written in 1950s to tell the reader why Helena is important.

In places, Caesar Wives can be quite informative. When Frisenbruch writes about the symbolism of dress/hair styles or the symbolism found in coins and statues, or the evolving definition of the ideal Roman woman, the storyline is clearer. The text becomes particularly interesting when Frisenbruch's recounts those rare occasions when the empresses - or other female member of the Roman elite - exercised real political power or engaged in philanthropic largesse.

While there is slight feminist slant to her writing, when Frisenbrush writes about coins, dress, power, or philanthropy, she gives a fresh, and well-documented, analysis of the history of women inside the telling of the history of the Imperial Roman. It is unfortunate that this analysis is too often clouded by an unfocused presentation.

Chapter One

Jesus, Jerry, and Me

It was a warm spring evening in Lynchburg, Virginia. Monday, May 14, 2007. My husband, Jerry Falwell, and I drove across town enjoying how the Blue Ridge Mountains stood in timeless majesty against an azure sky, dressed in verdant green trees. Their branches waved in the gentle breeze like a benediction.

"Would you like to go to O'Charley's for dinner?" Jerry said, the usual twinkle of good humor in his eyes. "It's Monday."

"Oh Jerry, I'd forgotten!"

On Monday nights O'Charley's offered steak soup, a new dish on the menu. I'd longed to try it again, but I seemed to think of it only on Wednesday or Thursday or Saturday. Most people wouldn't expect a man like Jerry Falwell, who had so many major issues on his mind, to remember a little thing like getting his wife a bowl of steak soup. But then, most people didn't know my husband.

The crowd at O'Charley's was light as we slid into a booth. Jerry nodded and waved at some people across the room. We'd never met the young woman who waited on us, but after forty-nine years of marriage, I wasn't surprised by my husband's kindness to her.

"Where do you go to college?" he asked.

"I go to the community college," she said with a shy smile.

"Why aren't you at my university?" Jerry asked. "Liberty University."

"My parents can't afford it," she said, shrugging one shoulder.

"If you'd like to go to Liberty, I'll give you a full scholarship."

Her eyes lit like sparklers on the Fourth of July. "Are you serious?"

Jerry assured her that he was serious, and she floated away in a haze of disbelief. She'd had no idea when she walked up to our booth with her pad in hand that her life was about to change forever. But after almost fifty years of marriage to Jerry, I could have predicted it.

Once, some children had knocked a baseball over the fence into our yard. Before giving the ball back to them, Jerry wrote a message on it promising a scholarship at Liberty, and then he signed it. "Wait!" he yelled, chasing the kids down the street. "I want to add that it's a four-year scholarship." So I smiled at the young waitress who tried to be sedate but almost jumped for joy asshe walked away.

Something else stands out in my mind about that evening. I remember that Jerry ate no more than two or three bites of his food. Instead, he seemed content to gaze across the table, his eyes tracing the familiar features of my face in a most unusual way.

It was almost as though he was seeing me for the first time. Or the last. As soon as the thought formed I pushed it aside. Jerry had looked across the table at me for almost fifty years.

Still...he focused on my face.

I savored my soup, aware of his scrutiny. Young people like our waitress often think those of our generation are trite when we repeat such worn expressions as, "Where did all the years go?" But one day they, like the rest of us, will look up, stunned that fifty years could have been so...brief.

That's why, as Jerry watched emotions flicker across my face, I reflected over our life together, and marveled. It had been quite a ride -- not at all what I'd envisioned when I'd married the skinny young man who founded Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Back then, neither of us had any idea where our journey would take us. I, for one, am glad. Timid as I've always been, it is best that I did not foresee meetings in the White House, traveling around the world, protestors, death threats, bomb threats, and a kidnapping plot. God's plan for our lives is so much bigger than anything we can imagine, and though I would have shied away from it had I known what lay ahead, I'm so grateful I did not miss it.

Neither Jerry nor I imagined that God was forging us into instruments He would use to affect thousands of people and the politics of a nation. We were unaware of the tapestry He'd been weaving all along. We just thought we were living our lives.

That's the way God works, but we didn't know that then.

Polar Opposites

I don't think what makes our story relevant is Jerry or Macel Falwell. We were...how shall I say it?...unlikely candidates. You could search the world and have trouble finding two more opposite people than Jerry and me.

I was a prim and proper lady who'd been raised in the arms of a hardworking, protective Christian family. Jerry used to say that, in my family, failing to pay a tithe was akin to murder. Though it was a bit of an exaggeration, he had a point.

In my home on Christmas morning, no one unwrapped a gift until the Christmas story had been read from the book of Luke. We never listened to any music except Christian music. We did not watch movies, and alcohol was forbidden. I was the youngest of three daughters with a younger brother on whom we doted. I was timid and hesitant about life, a trait that would progress with the years.

Jerry was the son of a bootlegger. His father was an agnostic and his grandfather an avowed atheist. His father shot and killed his own brother in self-defense. He was a shrewd businessman who made a small fortune, while drinking himself to death.

Jerry and his twin brother, Gene, were the youngest of five children in the Falwell family. Their mother, a quiet Christian woman, was a saint in the midst of a rough and rowdy family of Southern rebels.

I spent my younger years committed to Christ and to His church. Jerry had grown up without such commitment. Over the years his mother pressed him to go to church. For a while he accommodated her, but most Sundays Jerry walked in the front door and slipped out the back when no one was looking.

Throughout our marriage I was shy, fearful, and ever certain that none of Jerry's wild ideas would work. Jerry believed that anything was possible through prayer and hard work.

So you see, our story is not relevant because of who we were, for we were polar opposites, ordinary people with ordinary weaknesses, whose lives intersected with Jesus. Our story is relevant only because it reveals what God can do with two ordinary, if unlikely, people who dare to say yes to Him.

The Bible says that the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men (1 Corinthians 1:25). Somehow, Jesus took us -- weak, foolish vessels that we were -- and confounded the wisdom of the world.

Our story is about Jerry, Jesus, and me, and what happened when our lives intersected.

In the Beginning

Jerry continued to gaze at my face while I ate my soup and pondered our differences. Why I was the one who had ended up sharing his life, I'll never know. I wasn't a fearless defender of human rights, after all. I felt ill-suited for life in the limelight. But strange as it might seem, I was the one God and Jerry chose. I guess they saw something in me -- the skittish little girl born on October 4, 1933, to Sam and Lucile Pate -- that I didn't.

What was it? Perhaps in part it was the heritage of faith, love, and integrity that I received from my parents. My father, Sam Pate, had been raised in a Christian home in Alum Creek, West Virginia. Although he was one of the smartest men I've ever known, Daddy completed school only through the third grade. Back in those days, you could teach school if you finished fifth. A lean man with brown hair and warm eyes, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, at the age of eighteen and found work.

A coworker invited him home for the weekend and Daddy met -- and lost his heart to -- a pretty young woman he saw sitting on the front step of the house next door. Her name was Lucile Donald and, of course, she became my mother.

A Supernatural Intersection

I was twelve years old when I gave my heart to Jesus. Six years later, still riding the wave of His love, I was swept into my first encounter with the man who would forever change my life. The stage for our meeting was set when the little Baptist church we attended sent a few families, including ours, to plant a new church -- Park Avenue Baptist. The new church had a cheery wooden sanctuary and two pianos, one on either side of the platform. My friend Delores Clark played one piano and I played the other. We also played for the pastor's early-morning radio broadcast.

During those years, I did not lack for male attention. But my pastor's young brother-in-law, Julius, was the most persistent. A handsome young man, he was pursuing a career as minister of music. Although my parents were very strict about my relationships, my mother adored Julius, and I was flattered when he proposed to me. The truth is that I was more interested in the concept of marriage than in its reality. When Julius slipped an engagement ring on my finger, I knew I wasn't ready to leave my happy family to make one of my own.

I don't want to hurt his feelings, I thought. I can always give it back to him later.

I didn't mind being engaged, but I had no interest in getting married.

One Sunday night in January 1952, wearing my sparkling engagement ring, I dressed for church in a black velveteen dress with white trim. The sanctuary, which held three hundred people, was filled almost to capacity. Delores and I were playing hymns when ushers brought three teenage boys to seats in the front. I noticed that one of them in particular, although skinny, was quite handsome.

His name was Jerry Falwell.

The Man Behind the Media Image

O'Charley's had begun to fill with the evening crowd and I stopped eating my soup long enough to say hello as friends and acquaintances passed by. Still watching my face, Jerry leaned against the padded booth, looking for all the world like he, too, was remembering the first time he saw me back in 1952.

Our waitress brought hot rolls baked a deep golden brown just the way I liked them. As I buttered my bread, I paused to study his face. The thing that still amazed me after all these years was how many of the media portrayals had painted a bizarre public persona of Jerry that most of the world believed to be true. Wonderful, touching story from a loving wife

I just read Macel's book, and I am compelled to write just a little bit about it. Her book is about Jerry and her life with him. It is an oddly connected set of vignettes, lots of chronological mixing, different perspectives and different people -- I guess I would never call it great literature but it does tell a terrific story in a moving manner. I could not put it down until I finished it.
Here is a guy from my area and era and the gal he married. The book tells stories of his imbroglios and accomplishments from a very personal standpoint, but it also includes the "other side" in some instances, such as evidenced by an article by Larry Flynt about his odd relationship with Jerry. There are many different opinions about this guy, but this story is a love story by Macel about her man, and her view is what you would expect. However, through her telling you cannot escape feeling the excitement that must have pervaded every fiber of this man's body, and the boundless energy that drove him to accomplish what few of us would ever dream of! He and his family visited many foreign lands, dined with and entertained countless dignitaries (including Presidents), and Jerry built an enormous university, leaving it debt free when he died! What a fantastic life.
I looked for errors all through the book, but found only one suspect where the word was "from" and I thought it should have been "form", but even that was questionable. Turns out that Macel was an English teacher... Surprise, she graduated from Liberty University!
I recommend this book highly to all those who would like to see the inside story of one of the truly great men of our generation.

A good book, A good Man

I bought the book because I herd so much haltered from the media I wanted to know why.

I now know why. Jerry Falwell devoted his life to one thing, to telling everyone he could about the love and salvation of Jesus

He did it well, and he did it with no hidden motive. This is impossible to understand if you don't know Jesus. They tried everything to make him mad, to find him out, to uncover his weakness and he just kept smiling and telling them about the love of Jesus. There was nothing to uncover, he said he cheated no one, and he didn't, he said he hated sin but loved the sinner, and he did love them. He said he cared about people and when they checked carefully it turned out that he cared about people. That made them mad.

The true story of a great Christian American

I highly recommend this inspirational story of the life and legacy of Dr. Jerry Falwell. It is truly a blessing that Macel Falwell has chosen to share the true story of this great Christian American. The Godless, hate filled left has distorted the great works of Dr. Falwell, but the reality tells a different story. We in America (especially Christians) could use a few more Jerry Falwells today, as we face a moral & spiritual crisis greater than ever before.

I have now purchased almost all of Nancy Pickard's mysteries. She tells a great mystery story - with many twists that keep you turning the pages. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good, juicy mystery with great characters.

Not bad.

I actually liked this book better than Nancy Pickard's book "Bum Steer". The plot doesn't really lead the reader to a point where you can solve the mystery. I actually thought I had solved it twice. But it is pretty interesting anyway, although almost impossible to solve based on the clues. It also contains some bad language so sensitive readers beware.

This is a great mystery that will leave you puzzling over murders as well as hundred-year-old missing corpses. So many clues leave you guessing and then surprized in the end! I highly recommend this as well as all the Jenny Cain mysteries!!!

Greatest Guide to A Healthier Home

I've been using green products (Shaklee) way before the word "green" became a popular addition to our vocabulary and yet I still have learned so much more after reading Sloan Barnett's book. She has done so much for us with the amazing amount of research and love that went into writing this treasured book. Everyone should have a copy of this in their home.

disappointed :(

I was really excited about this book but was very disappointed with it. It is not a total waste, there are good tips in it but it seemed too much like a way to sell Shaklee products for her husband. I don't deny that Shaklee has good stuff, but most of the options she gave were to use various shaklee products. Not all of us want to buy Shaklee and so I was disappointed that she didn't have more options. She seems a little too uppity and soccer-momish, too. I guess I'm a little too crunchy for this book :) I didn't relate well to it and though there is some good stuff inside the book, I know I can find better. I got it because my daughter has asthma and wanted to learn more. It's not a total waste but keep looking!

Clean Green Tips for a Healthier Planet and Life

Over the past year, there have been dozens of books on the green theme published, and Green Goes with Everything: Simple Steps to a Healthier Life and Cleaner Planet, by Sloane Barnett, is the newest. Barnett does her research and presents a good primer to get anyone started on a healthy, toxic-free life.

My biggest complaint is Barnett's obsession over non-toxic cleaning products and cleaning the home. On one hand, I get it--her son, Spencer, had an asthma attack at age three that landed him in the hospital. (Spencer gets better once the toxic cleaning products are removed.) The other source of her obsession is what is a bit annoying--her husband is CEO of Shaklee products, which are non-toxic household cleaning products.

Now, Barnett is not alone--there are entire books written about how to clean your home and with what products. I just think too many--including Barnett--go on and on about cleaning and non-toxic products--just DO IT and move on to more important subjects. really--cleaning the house is not rocket science...

The first three chapters are devoted to the subject of a non-toxic home. In chapter one, we learn "the real dirt on clean." The chapter discusses the probable toxins in our home and what is "scary" vs. is "safe" dirt.

Chapter two informs about the dangerous cleaning products in our home.

Chapter three is about alternative safe cleaning products. This is where we hear how wonderful and superior Shaklee products are. A bit too info-commercial for my tastes. Barnett does offer some simple handmade cleaning solutions and non-toxic household cleaning products that Shaklee doesn't manufacture. The reality--most of the "alternative" non-toxic cleaning products work just fine.

Chapter 4 is about non-toxic body care products. Hair color, deodorant and other unsafe products are discussed and safe alternatives are provided.

In chapter 6, Barnett explains how to eat organic while buying smarter and cheaper and what chemicals to avoid in food.

Chapter 7 discusses clean water. Good advice on how to make your tap water safe and to avoid the extremely wasteful throwaway bottles.

In chapter 8, a broader look at how to keep the air in ones home clean is discussed. Barnett writes about fireplaces and stoves, cabinets, furniture and upholstery and mattresses--all stuff that outgasses and degrades the air quality. She does a good basic job of this, but for an comprehensive guide to all facets of furniture, walls, floors and more, a great companion to this book is: the award winner, HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Chapter 9 covers energy in the home and Barnett provides easy ways to save on energy in the home.

There are resources at the end of the book for many green products.

Can't wait to read book four!

WHISPER NO LIES is book three in Cindy Gerard's Black Ops series and it's a series I'm addicted to. The two main characters of this book were introduced in the last book, TAKE NO PRISONERS. Crystal Debrowski is best friends with Abbie Hughes who is now married to Sam Lang. Crystal and Johnny Reed met when he was tailing her over a previous assignment. Things will heat up again when Crystal runs across a dangerous proposition that puts her dead center in the middle of a foreign sex-slave ring.

Although the scenario is a little too far-fetched at times, the banter as well as the passion between Crystal and Johnny well makes up for any flaws. I found myself laughing out loud throughout this book.

Each book does stand on its own, but I'd still recommend this series to be read in order. Each new book builds upon the last one. Here's the series so far:

2. Take No Prisoners (2008)
3. Whisper No Lies (2008)
4. Feel the Heat (2009)
5. Risk No Secrets (2010)

These are fast-paced with lots of action and passion. It's a romantic suspense series that isn't too serious and the ending leaves me with a smile.

No disappointment here!!

As the next book in this series it was worth the wait. Crystal and Johnny keep you on the edge of your seats. She is a woman with a definite attitude. She is strong where it counts and has a soft spot for him. Crystal says no to the wrong guy--he kidnaps her and then she is in over her head. Johnny and the boys come to the rescue big time. She shows all the guys that she is more that just a pretty face with a hot body attached. Hot love scenes and kick butt guys make this a great read. If you haven't read the first two, you won't be behind but bet you order them next!!

Cindy Gerard Just Gets Better and Better!

I've been a Cindy Gerard fan for years now and this has to be the best book she's ever done. Whisper No Lies is one of those books I will not only recommend to friends, I will be buying this Black Op Series for gifts!

Johnny and Crystal drew me in in book 2, so I knew I was in for a treat with the third installment. As usual, Ms. Gerard didn't disappoint.

If you've never read Cindy's romance novels, you are in for a wonderful, thrilling ride with this series!

"As I write this note, things don't look good in the Middle East. I'm not sure when you're reading this, but I assume that things still don't look good in the Middle East, because they never really do."

The author Gregory Levey at the age of twenty-five-years-old and not even an Israeli citizen found himself sitting alone at the State of Israel's seat at the United Nations General Assembly. An important vote was about to take place, and he not only didn't know which way to vote on the resolution... he didn't even know what the resolution was!

This humorous and almost satirical yet somber situation was all set in motion innocently enough when Greg became bored in his second year of law school. The author being Jewish and a Canadian citizen going to school in New York decided to volunteer to serve in the Israeli army. After he signed up on-line for the army he still had a number of months ahead of him until he had to report to Israel. Unwilling to accept the monotonous months of waiting ahead he decided to apply for an internship at the Israeli Mission to the United Nations. What follows could provide enough fodder for a full season of hilarious sitcom material. As Greg followed up on his application, over and over again, without any positive results, he showed dogged determination and made yet another phone call to yet another person who told him to fax his resume directly to her. After still no response Greg gave up on the whole idea and left for Christmas break.

After he returned to New York in January he got a strange call from a man named Yaron from Israeli security. This led to many, many, phone calls with varying degrees of time between each clandestine call, with questions that ranged from "what side of the street did he live on?" to questions about the Jewish summer camp he attended as a child. Finally an interview was set up with Israeli Ambassador Mekel. The first thing the Ambassador said was: "You look perfect on paper, so there must be something wrong with you." During the interview the Ambassador told Greg there is no internship program but offered him a deputy speechwriter job on a part-time basis, because the regular speechwriter was going to be leaving and if everything went well he could take over fulltime. "Greg accepted the offer, but told him that as a Canadian, he was not eligible to work in the United States. The Ambassador shook his head before he even finished the sentence and said, "I can hire anyone I want. We'll just change your status from student to DIPLOMAT!" "So that was it. From the U.S. State Department's point of view, Greg was going to be an Israeli Diplomat, even though he wasn't an Israeli citizen." Greg had come in the hope of getting an internship and walked out as an Israeli Diplomat.

From there Greg starts writing speeches for Ambassador's in New York and gets noticed by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's staff in Israel, and as a favor writes a speech for the Prime Minister. While working in the Mission in New York he takes a vacation in Israel and takes a course in "combat firearms". He subsequently takes another vacation and goes to Israel and takes an "intelligence and counterintelligence" course, and as part of an assignment has to go undercover as "Joey Shmeltz". He then gets invited to come to Israel and work on Prime Minister Sharon's staff. From there on out the author provides a never before seen "outsider's" view of the "inside" of the tumultuous stress that Israeli's face daily as a people and as a nation with a smattering of rye humor along the way.

too young for his job

In his Author's Note, Gregory says that he wrote his tale of his failure (he doesn't call it that of course) in the service of the Israeli Government because "sometimes it's the comic details that best reflect the gravity of the larger picture." And he certainly wrote a hilarious, page-turner or a sad book. But it was sad for me at least because it was so obvious that Greg just didn't get it.

For years Greg worked for a country whose people and institutions are in profound transition. (And who are not at all sure they want to transform.) The transition is from a kibbutz-style country, a family; to a bureaucratized state with attendant civil institutions. From a big family where the cab driver gives the Prime Minister advice to a place where autonomous individuals take official rules and the arbitrary hierarchy those rules impose very seriously indeed. For years Greg worked (and even lived) in a place that only has the trappings of a bureaucracy but no actual bureaucracy--and for years he didn't see that.

At one point he tells his fiancée that Israel is a big family. But I never got the sense that he stopped to think what that might entail. In a family, you don't have a bureaucracy or rules. In a family, if a bunch of kids want a treat, they just stampede to the grown-up handing the treats out and the loudest ones get it first. In a family, if you want to get hired you don't follow formal protocol; you call someone. As Greg had to in the end call someone to get his job in the Mission.

But Israel, the state, can't just be a family. Because so much attention is directed at it, it is being forced to change. To become more bureaucratic. More like "a regular country". Or at least its civil institutions are undergoing that transition. It is a profound and painful transition--and one that many Israelis around Greg were not at all sure they wanted. That is why Israelis elected Ariel Sharon, a man renowned for his ability to do backward planning (i.e., decide on the goal he needs and on all the little steps needed to accomplish that goal) and that is why there was such a huge hole when Sharon was no longer there.

But Greg missed all that. He was too busy being frustrated; too busy being too young; too busy falling back on comfortable ideological assumptions. And so he failed to do the job he was hired to do: explain the improvisation-in-transition that is Israel to the rest of the world. The tale of his failure makes for a hilarious book that left me feeling very sad for this nice Jewish boy who takes rules so seriously. And when I finished the last page, I remembered that at the beginning of the book, Greg relates how Ambassador Mekel told him, "You look perfect on paper, so there must be something wrong with you."

There was. Greg was too young.

Levey bites the hand that feeds him

I could see why Greg Levey's book would be interesting to someone who hasn't spent much time in Israel and doesn't know much about the country. For someone who knows a little about the country, though, less than 25% of the book is particularly entertaining.

Much of the story is that Israelis are Israeli: simultaneously warm and rude, bureaucratic and disorganized, very serious about security and lax about everything else, and always always late. But you can find that out by walking into any Israeli government office to get a visa renewal or a tax exemption. Or from any of Efraim Kishon's books or films from the 1960s, which are far funnier. Levey tells many of the same anecdotes that everyone who has ever lived in Israel tells with humor, but he coats them in bitter outrage. Incidents are told in proportion to his irritation rather than humor: 3 pages cover a co-worker's obsession with baked potatoes, as if there were no eccentric co-workers outside Israel. Likewise "the worst person you'll ever meet" in Levey's eyes is an irresponsible and rude bureaucrat. Inshe allah that should be the worse person any of us ever meet.

Yes, we get it: Levey's sense of humor isn't good enough to allow him to tolerate the frustrations of Israel. He gives only one positive anecdote: workers donating part of their paychecks to help a co-worker with cancer whom none of them know.

Levey's experience taking security courses in Tel Aviv is a side of Israel that most people wouldn't have see, as are those seen from inside the government, though those are sparse. The best of those anecdotes are: Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom holding a meeting in his underwear and whose poor command of English necessitates that the sentences in his speeches be no longer than six words; Raanan Gissin telling Swedish diplomats the reason he was extremely late was that he had ordered from abroad a new pen and had to pick it up at the post office; ABBA's song Dancing Queen blasting on infinite repeat as Gissin did a media interview and drove on the sidewalk; nameless prime minister office bureaucrats leaking intentionally meaningless information to the press who struggle to decypher it.

The worst part of the book is the author's bitterness and ingratitude. At the beginning of the book Levey makes clear that Israel's informality and disorganization allowed him to be hired in the first place. Throughout the book, he interacts with high-ranking authorities and is repeatedly given opportunities beyond his rank and seniority, culminating with a relaxed and informal conversation with the prime minister who tries to find common ground with Levey to the point of asking if they have a mutual acquaintance. Instead of being touched by the informality of even the Prime Minister, Levey seems almost offended by the "tribal" nature of that question. Israel's informality gave him tremendous opportunities, and yet the book is unmercifully critical of the informality in virtually every respect in which the informality does not benefit him personally. The bottom line may simply be that Levey does not want to belong to a club that would have him as a member. He may not like it, but he belongs. I never heard of Levey before picking up this book at my public library's new books shelf, but I do know at least one person mentioned in his book from my college's Hillel and I'm sure that will be true for many readers.

Initially I wanted to write all about how Levey's political opinions seem knee-jerk, shallow, and naively one-sided, even when I agree with his conclusions, but that seems almost beside the point; the book isn't even good story-telling, much less political analysis. Like him, I favored the withdrawal from Gaza, but I'm surprised at his naivite to say that it was "the only hope for peace" and any opposition must be blinded by religious irrationality. As Kassam number 10,000 lands in Beer Sheva, it's now clear to everyone that there were strategic reasons to oppose withdrawal.

A Great Book on the Idea of American Cities

This is the fifth book of Witold Rybczynski's I have read and they just keep getting better. I admire the man for his calm discussions on so many aspects of architecture and cities (I find his book on Palladio: The Perfect House, most satisfying). For the professional architect or architectural historian, much of his discussions might seem basic stuff, but I find them instructive, clear and insightful. For anyone interested in the history of buildings in America, the idea of city life in Western Culture or even in the idea of what "home" means (forget Bill Bryson's book, At Home, Rybcynski's 1980s book on Home far surpasses that one), this is the author for you. His writing is consistently outstanding: clear, precise and tempered with the wisdom gained over many years of observing the subjects he discusses.

Great review of the history of city planning in the US

I found this book to be well organized and concise. As an architect that was in school during the city planning conversations of the 1960s, reading Makeshift Metropolis now has been a good review and an opportunity to reassess some of the notions that were prevalent then. Things have clearly evolved. Planning is more like being engaged in the trenches than organizing the pieces on a game board. Witold has done it again, bringing accessible understanding of a complicated issue to anyone who is interested in learning.

Excellent comparisons on planning ideas

This book presents the emergence of ideas regarding city planning and how they were refined over time. Present planning concepts favor more use of private sector entrepreneurism than many past planning theories considered.

Lewis Mumford is noted by the author as having ideas of regional planning that still resonate as he theorized the coming reality of sprawl spreading to exurbs. Jane Jacobs is noted as correctly foreseeing urban neighborhood vitality, but not with a steady middle class as Jacobs saw, but with wealthier results and more mobile newcomers. Frank Lloyd Wright correctly forecast urban decentralization. All together, these and others' planning ideas helped shape applicable theories today.

The U.S. has undergone relatively unplanned development, which is something Jacobs woud defend. Many of the primary factors determining how development occurs are decided by private developers rather than a few city planners. Planners strive to set and meet general goals of keeping cities livable and economically viable, safe from crime, diverse, and environmentally responsible. Economic decisions determine what people are willing to purchase. This had led to clashes between those desiring consistent urban design and those who want unique architectural designs. A major clash develops when the desires of what people wish to purchase may not be in the best interest for others, or the best for the environment.

Public parks are unique to North America. Most European cities, by contrast, have areas for visual viewing of gardens, flowers, and tended plants.

The public sector has often sought to work in conjunction with the private sector. An example of this is the Brooklyn Bridge Park where piers, parks, and housing are simultaneously under construction.

Much of current planning evolved from past ideas. Charles Mulford Robinson supported keeing cities looking nice visually. He favored cities adorned with trees, public art, clean streets, well lit streets, limited outdoor advertising, and height limits on buildings.

Ebenezer Howard led a movement that created Garden Cities. There are parks near cities. Many continue existing.

Le Corbusier called for tall buildings designed for practical use. He also favored bringing parks and nature close to cities. He argued for keeping apart the different centers of activities, such as shopping areas, main government buildings, sports stadiums, cultural and arts centers, etc. Zoning would plan this accordingly.

Jane Jacobs was very critical of urban renewal. She argued that residents and not bureaucrats should determine what residents wanted. She also believed cities should not be art but should concentrate on allowing people to live their lives,

Lewis Mumford agreed with Jacobs on her views against urban renewal plans but disagreed with her on her criticisms of planning for urban parks. Mumford believed good architecture and design were worthy goals while Jacobs did not see these as proper planning laws,

Patrick Geddes supported Howard's plans for parks and urged for additional conservation and ecological preservation. He was active in getting Scotland more involved in establishing parks and helping the local biology. Le Corbusier took favorable note of the efforts of Geddes.

Frank Lloyd Wright realized that automobiles had taken away the need for a city with a concentrated center. His predictions of decentralization were confirmed with the growth of suburbs. His prediction that cities would is wrong as cities have found ways to revitalize.

The Garden City movement of Ebenezer Howard resonates even thought none have been created since the 1930s. This is because many of those that were created remain and continue to be popular.

Herbert Gans observed that many people have various ideas on how their city should develop. We live in an entrepreneurial economic system. Martin Meyerson noted that there should be public support for planning goals in order for them to be enacted.

William Manning prepared a master plan for Harrisburg. It turned a swamp into a lake and created parks, gardens, and a pedestrian bridge. His Riverfront Park remains an attraction.

The Burtham and Bennett master plan for Chicago led to a lakefront park. Much of the rest of their plans did not materialize. Their ideas did influence the actions of planners and developers.

San Francisco created Fisherman's Wharf to attract tourism. It was not an urban renewal plan. Similarly, private developer James Rouse renovated Quincy Market in Boston as an attraction for tourists and well as nearby residents. Other commercial developments that attract tourists include Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco, South Street Seaport in New York, Navy Pier in Chicago, and Bayside Marketplace in Miami.

Some new buildings are so uniquely designed that they are affected by the Bibao Effect. This means they are immediately declared an iconic building. This is also called the Bilbao Anomaly since this rarely happens,

Penn's Landing in Philadelphia took decades to develop. Its large size required large and stable investors who could weather market cycles. There was a master plan with a grand plan the entire areas. What may have made more sense would have been to develop it in smaller sections. By comparison, the Brooklyn Bridge Park had clear public good and private development goals that are materializing.

The author notes public participation is important when developing large urban projects.

Suburban growth has happened more quickly than urban growth in most regions except for in seven areas where the cities outgrew their suburbs, The seven cities that did this are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Cleveland, and Norfolk.

Most downtowns are about four square miles and are walkable by 20 minutes from the downtown center to its edge. It is the attraction of shopping on foot that keeps downtowns competitive with suburban malls. Thus, downtowns can't expand in size. 90% of people who live downtown are single. Downtown residents are 0,3% of the population.

Most urban development occurs piecemeal. The author notes that marketplace decisions are not always the most accurate means to decide development. Still, the larger number of people involved in these decisions likely make their plans better than those of a few city planners. The author notes historical information should not be a deciding factor but that knowledge of past experiences and outcomes can help guide current actions.
