Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story, by Christopher Moore

Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley Dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching back, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her.

Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, Indiana, Tommy (to his friends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen-turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful undead redhead walks through the door...and proceeds to rock Tommy's life -- and afterlife -- in ways he never thought possible.

Amazon.com Review
Here's something different: a vampire novel that's light, funny, and not at all hackneyed. Between scenes of punks bowling frozen turkeys on the graveyard shift in a supermarket, or snapping turtles loose in a loft and gnawing on designer shoes, this novel has comic charm to spare. But it also packs an appealingly downbeat message about the consumer culture: Becoming a vampire has given the twentysomething heroine "a crampless case of rattlesnake PMS"--a grumpy mood in which she realizes that she can dress to the nines as a "Donner Party Barbie" and still end up disillusioned and unhappy, just another slacker doing her own laundry and watching sucky TV 'til the sun rises.

From Publishers Weekly
Horror, farce and adolescent fantasy mix with uncertain results in this latest offbeat novel from the author of Coyote Blue and Practical Demonkeeping. Attacked on her way home from work in San Francisco's financial district, sexy redhead Jody wakes up under a dumpster and gradually realizes that she has transformed into a vampire. Needing a safe place to hide from daylight and her attacker as she masters her new powers, she turns to Tommy, a 19-year-old aspiring writer from Indiana whom she's just met. Becoming lovers, the two get an apartment together where Tommy avidly studies the mysteries of both vampires and women. But Jody's vampire mentor, Elijah Ben Sapir, who's leaving blood-drained bodies all over the city, has it in for Tommy?as do the cops, who suspect the young man of the killings. With the aid of both the rebellious young misfits he works with and an eccentric homeless man, Tommy aims to vanquish Elijah Ben Sapir in order to save his beloved and himself. Moore's seemingly off-the-cuff narrative and plotting fail to deliver on an imaginative beginning. Despite offering some amusing moments, the author gives little depth to his motley cast of characters and wavers awkwardly between fable and satire.

From Library Journal
Tommy Flood, a teenaged Jack Kerouac wannabe, leaves his home in Indiana to search for his artistic muse and some adventure. What he finds is Jody, a beautiful redhead who has recently been transformed into a vampire and is trying to find a way to cope with her new "life." Together they go on a giddy romp of San Francisco, dealing with the occasional corpse, some suspicious cops, and a nasty old vampire. They also discover some surprising truths about morality, love, and the mechanics of vampirism along the way. A note to vampire fans: Anne Rice this isn't. Filled with oddball characters, clever dialog, and hilarious situations that are Moore's (Coyote Blue, LJ 1/94) trademarks, this delightful tale deserves a spot on all popular fiction shelves. Highly recommended.

Not exactly your Transylvania Vampire
By Jonni Gill
The first of this trilogy sets the tone of the story. First of all, it is "A Love Story" with a very unique premise. This is a funny book, as are all of Moore's books and quirky as usual. What "violence" there is, is not violent, but necessary to set up the events of how the main character finds herself in the position she's in, and weaves a thread to bring about the next two books in this trilogy. It is an easy read and flows right along in its storytelling. So many great characters and situations. You never can tell where one event will lead to the next, but if you are a Moore fan, you will see little references to characters in other of his books. It's a treat to run across them and takes you back to that particular book and story reminding you of how quirky Moore's writings are. This is a fun trilogy to read and you will wish he would write sequel. But no doubt he will bring them back in another book somewhere down the road. Have fun reading this. I did and couldn't wait to share with my "fiends", I mean friends.

Bite Me was a sequel?
By I. Vining
I actually read the sequel before I read this book, but even knowing the ending it was fun. I have enjoyed Christopher Moore's style. The characters are believable. I enjoy the style where many of the characters are "everyday people" , and not doctors, lawyers, millionaires, actresses, or super sleuth detectives, but people you might meet on any large west coast city (San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, etc.) street and not think too much about it. It is an enjoyable romp, for adults when the desire to escape a day of mundane stuff. You can read Bloodsucking Fiends and think okay my life could be worse my significant other could be a vampire.

Good enough
By Rob B.
This is a vampire farce full of witty and entertaining dialogue. I gave it three stars because parts of it could have used a bit more action to liven up the plot. Even with that slight flaw, this book is still well worth the read.
