You've Come a Long Way, Baby

Having enjoyed and learned a lot from retail expert Paco Underhill's previous two books, Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping--Updated and Revised for the Internet, the Global Consumer, and Beyond and Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping by the Author of Why We Buy, I was pleased to see he has another book out. Despite the cringe-worthy title, I wanted to give Underhill the benefit of a doubt. In What Women Want: The Global Marketplace Turns Female-Friendly, he makes the observation that women do a lot of shopping and not just for clothes and food. They have a say in big ticket items like cars and houses and appliances. Many women are not even married, they work for a living, and buy their own houses, cars, and appliances. Hear me roar.

It's a sure bet that Underhill didn't write this book for women at all. He uses awkward phrasing, making it sound as if he's reporting anthropological findings about a colony of exotic specimens with quaint shopping habits. He shies away from the word "woman" most of the time, opting for "female" and "female of the species."

His major finding is that women like things clean. Clean stores, clean hotel rooms, clean restrooms. Here's a flash for you retailers out there - men like things clean too.

There are some useful nuggets in the book, if you're willing to wade through frequent speculations that women like curvy surfaces as opposed to more manly straight edges. For instance, in the chapter about hotels, Underhill notes that women are more concerned with security than men are. That means that a woman may not appreciate it when the clerk at the reception desk calls her by name several times as she checks in, so that everyone in the lobby knows her name. Good advice.

Unfortunately, you have to put up with a lot of generalizations and spurious factoids, such as "In general, females find it much easier to orient their way around if they can look at a 3D map." Here's a mysterious observation on parking lots in the Netherlands where - "Perhaps because of biological imperatives ... females are more comfortable positioning themselves - and their small cars - over something rather than within two defined lines. Men, owing to their own biology ... are more at ease navigating their vehicles in between a target."

I'd like to think that Underhill did actual research to come up with his advice, maybe some surveys and questionnaires, gathering statistics and such, but if he did, he doesn't mention it. We just have to take his word for it that "Reading ... has always been a more traditionally female passion than a male one. It's sedentary, meditative, personal. It's passive (I mean that as a compliment)..."

To be fair, Underhill makes generalizations about men too, as if men don't care if their hotel room or store restroom is clean, or that men are only about specs and power and don't care at all about convenience and comfort. Most of the improvements Underhill suggests would be as appreciated by men as they would be by women. Clear instructions, thermostat controls in hotel rooms, clothes that fit, who doesn't want those?

So very disappointing

I love Paco's work. I'm a Paco fan. His company and insights are remarkable. This book, however, is far from insightful...except for his observations related to Best Buy.

I preordered the book and waited in expectation for the day it arrived. I kept reading page after page wishing a golden gem would appear. "Why We Buy" is a great book with solid research that support his findings. This is a wandering, unorganized, pointless collection of thoughts that would be concluded by anyone who spends a day with their wife or close female friend.

Paco's and Envirosell's work deserves a better representation than this random collection of thoughts...

My wife, knowing that I'm a huge Paco fan, read the book before I could get to it. It took her less than a casual day's reading and she concluded that the introduction is more valuable than the actual content.

Women want: 1)cleanliness, 2)control, 3)safety, 4)you to be considerate...Now, stop there. The essence of the book has now been shared. Avoid the wandering remainder of the book.

disappointed

Paco Underhill is a retail anthropologist. He studies, for example, traffic patterns inside grocery stories. He's the kind of guy who's responsible for why milk is at the back of the store, what appears on the end caps of each aisle, why some cereal goes on the bottom shelf and some on the top ... It's fascinating stuff. In fact, two of my favorite books are his previous ones, Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping--Updated and Revised for the Internet, the Global Consumer, and Beyond and Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping by the Author of Why We Buy.

This book has some of that in it. For example, he does well taking us around hotels, electronics stores, casinos, and clothing stores, and all with a special eye to female consumers. For example, ever think of a drug store as the female equivalent of the much more markedly male convenience store? Makes a lot of sense.

Unfortunately, the rest of the book comes nowhere close to these passages, or to his other books. Instead, what we get are rambling musings, with no real data to back them up. These cover areas that aren't suited to his retail approach - houses, kitchens, bathrooms - as well as others that might be - gyms, farmer's markets ...

Now, I would have been fascinated by what his research told us about these topics. And, yes, he's an interesting guy, a great writer, and certainly knows whereof he speaks. But, in the end, it's really mostly just musings.

Actually, the overall impression I got with this effort was that Underhill may have simply been "phoning this one in." The research is lacking, the writing is (though well done) perhaps a little too cute, and some things are repeated over and over (the supposed appeal of cleanliness and curves to women, for example).

So, deadline? Getting bored? Wanting to turn a quick buck? Nearing retirement age? I don't know. All I do know is how excited I was to see another book by him, and how disappointed I was when I turned the last page.

First-time author Funk defines the term "supergirl" as an over-achieving young woman with a compulsive need to be the best in all areas: school, extra-curricular activities, social networking and, of course, physical appearance. As she and her fellows are discovering, however, the pressure of such all-encompassing ambition can result in exhaustion, eating disorders, emotional problems and screwed up priorities. One of Funk's 100-plus interviewees bemoans that "'when you Google me, nothing comes up. I need to have Google prowess'"; for herself, Funk confesses her chagrin over publishing her first book (this one) at the age of 20 instead of 18. Though such a young writer can't possibly tackle the complex state of 21st century feminism without reading (at the least) precocious, freelance writer Funk has done her research, and her writing is lucid and intelligent. A good deal of unnecessary ranting could have been cut, and brand name fatigue sets in early (one hopes Funk is getting kickbacks from Starbucks). Still, Funk provides some fresh insights, especially for a younger audience brought up on The Devil Wears Prada and the myth of workplace gender equality, encouraging self-awareness, reasonable priorities, and a healthy outlook.

"self help" is an accurate label - feminist is NOT!

I'll write a proper review when I feel like being in a really bad mood by reliving this book. As another reviewer wrote, I and many, many of my friends are considered perfectionist, overachieving women, but this book just isn't for or about us. The author makes sweeping generalizations and says, over and over (usually implicitly, but sometimes explicitly) that only very privileged women can be "supergirls." She says in interviews that this is not true, but her book says otherwise. (She specifically says that low-income immigrants, girls with acne, and girls who don't visit tanning salons CANNOT be supergirls, for example - and that's just the start.) I guess it shouldn't surprise me that the author paints supergirls only in terms of her own experiences, and only interviews others with nearly identical experiences. I also can't understand how the author is minoring in Women's Studies, because so much of it seems blatantly sexist and lacking the insight I've found in even introductory gender studies classes - there is certainly no concept of intersectional feminism in this book, and the author makes no room for dissenting voices on topics as basic as female sexuality. (According to Funk, only men can enjoy casual sex, but women cannot, and yes, Funk can speak for ALL women. And that's feminist how...?)

The editing is sloppy, and although there are a few places where Liz Funk absolutely shines, she pisses me off too often to redeem herself. I have hesitated to publicly write anything negative about this book, because the author herself has published articles on how wrong and mean it is to criticize a writer online - but I feel like this book deals with such an important topic so poorly that I can't be silent, plus, hey, I love talking about literature. The point is for "supergirls" to speak out, isn't it?

This is the only book that has upset me enough to actually keep a reader's journal - I just needed a place to write down all my objections.

To be fair, this book was labeled "Self Help," and I am rarely impressed by this genre. Also, to be fair, despite my privilege, I am not Funk's audience - I have already graduated from college (recently though it was), and I'm not rich enough to read this book. I took out student loans and pay my own bills, my god! I can't be a supergirl!

I hope someone else writes on this topic in a form that can be labeled Gender Studies. I'll wait till then...

Non-fiction chick lit. How groundbreaking.

I snatched this title off the shelf at Border's and shelled out the 15 bucks for it, salivating with excitement to read a collection of stories about women like me, who have sacrificed peace of mind for over-achievements. I, too, have been trying to relax my over-competitiveness and perfectionism "on paper" as I enter my mid-twenties. I was a bit miffed at the pink, girly cover, since not all women are hyper feminine, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she just really likes the color. I was a bit weary that the author's scope may be limited to privileged, upper-middle class, white "good girls," but I thought, surely a book about overachieving women wouldn't be anything like chick lit.

Boy, was I wrong.

Within the first few pages, I had to remind myself that the author was only 19 at the time of writing it, so perhaps she didn't have the most developed perspective on the "Supegirls" issue. Perhaps I misunderstood her definition of "Supergirls." She gets one thing right: that people need to learn to enjoy their lives and not succumb to society's pressures to be perfect. A good lesson for anyone. However, when she began overgeneralizing "Supergirls" as needing to juggle perfect social calendars and being seen at all the right club scenes, I flipped. This is ridiculous. Never have I met a true, over-achieving "Supergirl" who would ever waste her time primping for the male gaze and bar-hopping or wasting a night on the town. True "Supergirls" would be embarrassed to be seen at such vapid venues. They're in their rooms getting ulcers from studying so hard, winning national scholarships, meeting foreign ambassadors, getting fellowships to prestigious programs, Photoshopping their headshots for speaking engagements, picking the perfect business suit colors to garner authority, running way too many nonprofits and organizations, practicing their 10-second personal pitches, and yes, of course, looking put-together as pie. Many of these talented girls happen to be beautiful, as is the case with that rare type of "Supergirl" drive/talent/excessiveness, but I'll be damned if they are out in clubs with babydoll dresses listening to top 40 and drinking watermelon martinis, or whatever the hell those are. And I'll be damned if all of them are colorful skirt-wearing, heterosexual-subscribing, upper-middle class, chick-lit reading, Girl Power enthusiasts. Many of these "Supergirls" are just really successful people who DO need to "stop and smell the roses," as Funk would say. Not hyper-feminized goody goody girly girls.

The objectification of the female body and the subsequent effect it has on girls (anorexia, bulimia, debilitating low self-esteem, insecurity, etc.) is a HUGE issue, but it is NOT the "Supergirl" issue. Like the "Supermom" issue, it's DIFFERENT from the intellectual/academic/professional overachieving issue. Look at the women winning Fulbrights, personally assisting Obama in their mid twenties, the valedictorians of the Ivy Leagues, the women achieving things NOT on behalf of womanhood, but on behalf of humanhood. In my mind, true "Supergirls" have bigger things to worry about than body image insecurities, as these completely fall to the wayside of academic and professional success. They exist, but they are NOT at the core of perfectionism and over-achievement.

A little more research on Funk revealed that she falls into the collective feminist voice that speaks "Wow, women really CAN be smart, beautiful and successful." Once she, and other new-wavers stop acting so surprised that women can be better-than-average, perhaps this world will be a better place for all humans, regardless of sex or gender.

Funk is clearly bright, but not brilliant with this publication. I was very upset after reading a few chapters and skimming through the rest, because I bought it based on my desire to improve my life by not being such an overachieving stressball myself. I am returning this book to Borders, today. It did not help me, at all. I continue with my struggle to relax and accept myself as not being perfect.

I predict the following types of girls will connect and identify with this book: average, hardworking girls who try REALLY hard to get good grades, get into a decent enough college, LOVE pink, look nice for the boys, are conflicted between traditional roles of women and their achievements, and seem popular on Facebook. They're not movers and shakers. They're really good conformers.

True female geniuses, overachievers, lesbians, rags-to-riches, brilliant rabble-rousers, the ones who are more humanist than feminist? These are only a few demographics that this book completely ignores. I want to hear about more about THESE women. Not autobiographical chick lit. Hyper-feminine women are only a part of the female demographic, especially the over-achieving ones.

Before I close, I'd like to mention that I skimmed some later paragraphs in search of some retribution for Funk, but instantly came across a "you/your" typo, and shut the book for the last time. That was enough for me.

What is a Supergirl?

They're the high school class president with the constantly shiny hair who applied to over twenty Ivy League schools and always brings homemade goods to every bake sale. They're the college girl involved in a million clubs who shows up five minutes before the 8 a.m. class with no signs of her late night out, followed by many more hours of studying. They're the gotta-have-it-all twenty-something who busted her butt in college and is already on the same level as women ten years older in her field.

They're any girl who has packed her schedule, keeping herself busy with volunteer activities, who always manages to look perfect, regardless of how tired, stressed, or anxious she feels.

This is the plight of the Supergirls, the slew of young women who have decided that nothing short of perfection will do. By following the stories of five overachievers from different walks of life, and interviewing almost a hundred more, this book examines the lives of these girls to find out why they feel this need for perfection, and what they can possibly do to avoid the eventual burnout.

This book disappointed me by placing most of the blame on faceless entities such as "societal conditioning," rather than offering more concrete advice to young women who may be stuck in this harmful cycle of achievement and compliment addiction. Regardless, the stories in this book were an interesting foray into the psyche of a population that is often stereotyped and ignored, for the simple reason that "they have it all; how can anything be wrong in their lives?"

About the Author
Denise Coates was born and raised in the Bay Area and Montana. She attended the Washington Psychic Institute, where she was trained to give aura and chakra readings and healings. In 2001 she discovered teachings on the Law of Attraction and has since coached several hundreds of people to happier and healthier lives.

It makes sense AND it works!

I've been following the recent popularity of the Law of Attraction and diligently learned how it works. I was an expert at explaining it to friends and family, but never got around to actually applying it to my life.
Feel It Real is a book that explains that if you actually FEEL the vibration of what you want in your life, the universe has no choice but to deliver it to you. Have you ever had somthing in your life that was "wrong"? How did it make you feel? No very good Im sure. Its this feeling that sets the stage for more of what you done want to be delivered to you. Well, how do you get to feeling good about the things you want? Denise has actually made several games that you can play to raise your vibration and get you feeling good about whats going on in your life. I practiced several of the games in this book to manifest a job. Ive been out of work for months and was really getting down about it. Within 4 days of playing these games (playing them, not working them is important), I got a call back for a job thats near my home and offers a comfortable salary! I got this job and I never thought I would!
So, to say the least, this stuff works! Just be willing to play and have fun!

I love this book. If you need a little help pushing yourself in a more positive direction, this is your book! It has great exercises to do that really dig deep and pushes you to think about your life and the way you view your thoughts, ideas and desires in a different perspective. This is a great book! I would recommend this to anyone!

I have been waiting for this book to be published for about a year now...so needless to say I snapped it right up! First, thank you, Denise for sharing your success system with the world.

Denise gives you "games"(yes, they are fun and easy)to play. She lists step by step, precise actions you can do to raise your "vibration", so that you can "hold the note" of whatever it is your are desiring. I have wanted financial freedom for the last several years. I have read LOTS of book by LOTS of different authors on how to be successful using LOA doing what you love. Nothing has worked, until NOW!!! This book WORKS because Denise lays out all your steps in creating what you desire. She has helped me to change my beliefs about success, hard work and even the time it takes to be successful. I can tell you that I have achieved more with her than I have in the last five years! In 2004, in a remote Aboriginal community in northern Australia, Cameron Doomadgee, a drunk young indigenous man, was arrested and, a few hours later, died in his prison cell. A witness claimed that the six-foot-seven-inch arresting officer beat Doomadgee to death. The officer claimed that Doomadgee fell accidentally and that the extent of his injuries (which included broken ribs and a ruptured liver) wasn’t apparent. Through the story of the manslaughter trial, Hooper lays bare Australia’s institutional racism and the grim conditions of Aboriginal life there. A novelist, she finds a muscular music even when confronting sordid truths. Describing a desolate indigenous settlement, she recalls Aboriginal myth: “beer cans lay by the river’s edge, their red-and-green aluminum shimmering in the sun; a nightmare incarnation of the Rainbow Serpent.”

Critics agree that Tall Man is true-crime journalism at its finest. While Hooper, who admittedly knew little about Aboriginal life before researching the topic, focuses much of the book on the manslaughter trial, she tells a much wider story about centuries of Aboriginal life, government policies, and historic injustices. Thoughtful and compassionate, the book is also fast paced as Hooper becomes immersed in the community on Palm Island, especially in the Doomadgee clan. While she didn’t have access to Hurley, she talked to his colleagues in order to try to understand all perspectives of the story. In the end, Hooper concludes, “I had wanted to know more about my country, and now I did—now I knew more than I wanted to.”

Outstanding Work, But Not Easy Going

"Tall Man," by Chloe Hooper, is a rare bird, indeed, a non-fiction work of passion and power. It is set in Palm Island; an aboriginal settlement in the "Deep North" of Australia, and concerns the death in police custody of the 36-year old Aboriginal Cameron Doomadgee, who was arrested by a white police officer, Senior Sergeant Christopher Hurley, for swearing in his direction; was taken to the police lockup, and was dead 40 minutes later. Doomadgee, who was drunk at the time, had apparently been beaten to death. Hurley, a charismatic and popular cop who had chosen to spend most of his career in the aboriginal precincts that his coworkers wouldn't voluntarily go near, was always the chief suspect. But Hurley was fiercely protected by his own; apparently the thin blue line is universal. He was never convicted of the Aboriginal's death.

Author Hooper is the author of a highly praised 2002 novel, ("A Child's Book of True Crime") that was named a "New York Times" Notable Book of the Year, and was shortlisted for the Orange Broadband Prize. Excerpts from her award-winning investigation of the Doomadgee case have appeared in "The Observer," and "The Guardian Weekly." She lives in Melbourne, Australia, and was asked to write about the Doomadgee case by the pro bono lawyer who represented his family; she spent three years on it, researching the brutal history of Australia's whites, and its native population. Generations of white policymakers did their best to break up Aboriginal families, deprive them of work, and isolate them. The results can be seen only too clearly in Palm Island, colonized by children taken from their families and thrown into dormitories. Hopelessness, anger, violence, drunkenness, drug use, and sadism seem to characterize the community; not very pretty, and she brings it all to the table. This book brings to mind a grim New Zealand movie of some years back, Once Were Warriors, in its depiction of that island's aboriginal community (known as Maori), and its seething rage, drunkenness and violence.

"Tall Man" is an outstanding piece of work, but is surely depressing reading. In addition,it's not easy keeping all those aboriginal family names straight; I wished for a chart that helped identify them. Furthermore, most Americans don't know much about Australia; the few pictures given in the book that might help us, are printed on the same paper stock as the text, and are therefore of very poor quality. Then you've got to wander to the last page of the Acknowledgments in back to find their captions. Moreover, while I'm discussing pictures, the author frequently describes the Aborigines' "dream paintings" to us, several times to do with "the tall man." But these dream pictures have been gathered for exhibits in museums and art galleries all over the world, and their catalogs are surely available. And a cousin of mine, Osa Brown, put together a collection of these pictures in book form for a New York museum. So, pictures of these dream paintings can be found, and I believe they should have been included in the book, to allow readers to see what the writer was describing to us. I know I seem to be asking for more/better pictures a lot recently, but this is one book that really cries out for a photo gallery.

Chloe Hooper combines gripping narrative with harrowing reportage to convey an act of violence in a land of stunning brutality. When an Aboriginal man dies in custody on an island off Australia's Queensland coast, the event becomes national news after a pathologist renders a flippant report and the white police want to write off the event, so the locals riot. It has been a long time since a book has moved me as deeply as this book does.

On Friday, November 19, 2004, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, at the end of his second year in the Aboriginal settlement at Palm Island, arrested Cameron Doomadgee for cursing at him and another officer. Doomadgee was drunk at ten in the morning. Forty minutes later, Doomadgee was dead, with injuries consistent with a massive car crash. Hooper tries to reconstruct those forty minutes, and the legal wrangling that lasts for nearly three years afterward.

In Hooper's heartrending language, Palm Island mixes the worst aspects of an Indian reservation, a penal colony, and Hell. Though Hooper conducts her reportage with the help of Doomadgee's family, her frankness creates a world of moral compromise, stunning melding of honorable and shameful traits, and a people wracked with generations of pain and abjection. There is enough in this book to stun and appall anybody of any social or political point of view.

Sergeant Hurley comes across one moment as a sterling lawman who builds bridges between white government and poor black Aborigines, then as an evasive, angry bigot. Cameron Doomadgee is a loving father and leader, and at the same time a chronic drunk with a brutal temper. The trial to see who was responsible for what drags out an entire province's buried racism as well as its higher ideals. Australian frontier justice is swift, sure, and unforgiving.

The story unfolds in a way comprehensible to world audiences. Comparisons to the Wild West and the American Civil War make the story of a crime on the far side of the planet feel as close as my own history. But this very clarity is also what makes this book such an impactful read. I can imagine having a beer with Chris Hurley, or a friendly dust-up with Cameron Doomadgee; and I can imagine having to choose sides when one dies in the other's custody.

Hooper unflinchingly depicts the story's participants as they are, with the glory and pain intact. In reading this, I was struck by one question: how different is this from America? Looking at suffering urban blacks or reservation Indians, and the way people who look like me deny that anguish while crushing those who dare rise up, I have to confess, maybe not much. But does that make the present culpable for the crimes of the past? I can't say.

This is a very important book. People of good conscience and confident values should read it, regardless of their politics or background. It is packed with harrowing truths and hard-eyed views of the highs and lows of human nature, a story that is as moving as it is terrifying, as uplifting as it is appalling. I couldn't put it down. I don't ordinarily advocate in reviews, but I will make an exception here: drop everything else and read this book, right away.

A Story of Humanity, Diminished

It's impossible to read this book as an American and not be drawn to the sense of parallel worlds. You can't help but recall similar issues here and the impact of well-meaning missionaries on the American Indian population, the injustice, suppression and the inhumane treatment of black slaves and their struggle for civil rights.

The world of the Aborigine people of Australia unfolds in the author's tale. She came to Palm Island to document the trial surrounding the 2004 death of Cameron Doomadgee, but she found herself looking at the world of the indigenous people of the continent with new eyes.

Their plight becomes a character in Hooper's book, as real and detailed as the people she is surrounded by. The pervasive alcoholism, physical abuse of women, violence, distrust of the white authorities, mysticism and racism are palpable and place the death of Doomadgee squarely in the context of the world he lived in.

Like her assignment that should only have taken weeks, the actual murder was more than just about a white cop and a dead 'blackfella'. It was a symptom of a much bigger problem. One officer she interviews comments that the environment he lives in, among the indigenous people he is supposed to protect, has left him with the knowledge that he is a racist - and he knows enough to understand that his humanity has been diminished for it.

The horrifying thing is that the events in Tall Man didn't occur last century, or the one before. It was five years ago. Several times while reading this book I had to remind myself that these events were shockingly recent. Several things I read with a sense of disbelief that such things were still possible in a developed country.

Hooper's narrative isn't preachy, or dramatic, but understated and observant - it simply is what it is, and often it offends our sense of justice and humanity. But it seems that is exactly the target she was aiming for.

The text is well written, engaging, and humorous, and the audio production, too, is of stellar quality, with actress Karen Ziemba giving each character a distinct personality. During a career that started in the mid-1980s, Jance has honed her talent for writing entertaining, accessible mysteries that readers can zip through in a weekend. That’s certainly the case with her latest Ali Reynolds novel, a lightweight mystery about fortysomething Reynolds, a magnet for trouble, who apparently just wants to get on with ordinary life. The suspense part comes in the form of one Peter Winter, who introduces himself as the novel opens, quickly revealing that  his favorite pastimes are identity theft and bludgeoning women who visit his Web site, Singleatheart.com. When Ali’s contractor is suspected of murdering his wife, Ali’s loyalty to him kicks in and, predictably, her support and her curiosity compromise her own safety as well as that of others she holds dear. Characters introduced previously are accorded a bit more definition here (especially Ali’s mother, who proves that, as well as being pushy, she’s just as resourceful and brave as her daughter). Consider this as mostly a pleasant diversion for backyard or beach rather than a thrilling page-turner. --Stephanie Zvirin

The Web Stalker

We often hear of the dangers from predators lurking on the internet. Now, prolific mystery writer, J.A.Jance, has written a nicely chilling and satisfying tale of a psychopath stalking women on the web. He uses a web site, singleatheart.com, that attracts married women looking for sex with someone besides their husband. Ex-TV journalist Ali Reynolds (You may have met her in Jance's Hand of Evil, Web of Evil, and Edge of Evil.) becomes interested when the wife of the building contractor restoring her house is brutally murdered. Naturally, the husband is suspected, but Ali does not believe it. She starts snooping, finds the web site, and innocently draws the attention of the psychopath. After that, the story plunges into breathtaking suspense, as the murderer decides that Ali is a threat, and he must find her and kill her. It comes to a great climax in a thoroughly enjoyable story.

disappointing work from a very good author

JA Jance is one of the authors whose books I buy in hardcover as soon as they come out. I follow and look forward to both her Joanna Brady and JP Beaumont series. When heard that she started another series, this with Ali Reynolds, I couldn't wait to try it out.

This is the last in that series I'll read. I expect detectives, police, rescue workers and so on to approach trouble. I can even deal with an intellectual non-professional like Miss Marple or the title characters in the current TV series Numbers and Mentalist working along with the door-bangers and gun-carriers to solve the mystery. However, I just can't buy into a retired newscaster stumbling upon mayhem and murder, then being better focused and smarter than the law enforcement professionals.

In addition to all that, the underlying plot line is quite plausible, but Jance focused more on the involvement of the characters with each other than on the mystery. Other authors, such as John Harvey in Lonely Hearts (ISBN-10: 1932859446) did a much better job with the same concept.

This book took me through a long plane ride. If I had had the ability to put it down and switch to a different book, I would have.

I enjoyed this mystery novel. From the beginning, things start getting tangled up to the point where you wonder if the mystery is ever going to be solved. Finally, things do start getting untangled and the "bad guy" gets his due. J. A. Jance, an author new to me, keeps things moving and kept me turning the pages. I'll definitely take a look at her other novels.

"If only you'd been born pretty," Tina Greene said as she glanced at her daughter's reflection. "Or with only one flaw. Like a big nose. That we could fix."

"As it is, we must suffer with my moderate unattractiveness," Megan told her mother, going for sarcasm so no one would know how she really felt. Well, most people could guess, but her mother would take the words at face value. To do otherwise would mean giving thought to another person -- something Tina Greene never seemed to do.

"I suppose 'moderate' covers it," Tina murmured as she reached for a brush and eye shadow. "On a good day. If only you were more like your sister. Leanne's only thirteen and she has boys calling here all the time."

Dateless, Megan thought grimly. Eighteen and dateless. "Too bad there's not a recovery center you can send me to. You know, to get over being ugly and not having a boyfriend."

Tina nearly frowned. "Are you being smart with me?"

"No, Mom," Megan said in her most innocent voice.

"There was that one boy. I forget his name. Didn't he end up in prison?"

She refused to answer on the grounds that it was true. Her only boyfriend had been arrested. It wasn't his fault -- at least that's what she'd heard. But then she'd also heard Travis had killed someone. She wasn't sure what was the real story.

"You didn't even go to your prom," Tina said. "I could have set you up with someone, but you'd rather sit home by yourself. Do you know how embarrassing that was for me? My daughter not going to the prom?" Tina turned in her chair. "Do you go out of your way to make my life difficult? Does it bring you joy to make me unhappy?"

Megan stared at her mother. She'd read about a study that said babies were more likely to look at attractive faces than unattractive ones. If that was the case, she probably hadn't slept much as an infant. Her attention would have been riveted on her mother's perfect face.

Through some combination of good genes and great luck, Tina had been born beautiful. Stop-traffic, is-she-really-human beautiful. Dark hair that fell in perfect waves, big green eyes and clear, pale skin that practically glowed. It didn't sound all that amazing in words, but in person, Tina was goddess material.

To this day, guys were constantly staring. Men came on to her every time she went out. As her eighteen-year-old daughter, Megan thought it was gross. And depressing. Worse, her baby sister was nearly as pretty. Megan, instead, was the smart sister.

Smart and funny, she reminded herself. She had substance. That's what her dad said. They were the regular ones in the family. Tina and Leanne were shallow and narcissistic, but they loved them anyway because she and Dad had substance.

"What is that you're holding?" Tina asked, pointing at the blouse on the hanger.

"Nothing."

"It looks like something. Did you make that? The color doesn't work at all on you. Yellow? Megan, how many times do I have to explain the purpose of clothing? To enhance what you barely have. Or in your case, make it look like more than it is."

Megan glanced at the yellow thrift-store blouse she'd bought for three dollars and basically taken apart and put back together so that it looked like a sexy Chanel design. At least that had been the plan. It was pretty enough, and the fit was perfect, but something was missing. Maybe if she changed the buttons...

"I worked on this in my design class today."

Tina sighed and returned to face the mirror again. "I swear, I don't understand why your father indulges you the way he does. You can take all the craft classes you want, but don't for a minute think you can make a career out of any of them."

"It's not crafts. It's fashion design."

"Whatever. Be realistic. I don't mean to be cruel, but the truth is you're very unlikely to marry well. You simply don't have that much going for you. You'll have to make your own way. You need skills."

The speech was familiar. A variation on the same theme she'd been hearing for years. Only beautiful women got to marry well. Only beautiful women got to have perfect lives. Lesser mortals simply lived in pain and suffering until they were mercifully put out of their misery by death.

Normally Megan could hear the words and let them wash over her without them touching her at all, but not tonight.

"You're wrong," she said, deliberately inviting trouble. "I have talent, and I mean with more than just eyeliner. My teachers say that -- "

Tina rose and tightened the belt on her silk bathrobe. She might have been forty, but she had a body even Megan had to envy. "Your teachers are delighted to cash the checks for the exorbitant tuition they charge at that ridiculous design school. They're going to say whatever they have to so the money keeps coming. Look at yourself, Megan. You're a disaster. Those jeans are cut all wrong, your T-shirt has stains on it. Your hair looks like something cats slept in. I hate you.

The words boiled up inside, but years of practice kept them from spilling out. Without saying anything, Megan left her mother's room and returned to her own.

Her friend Allegra was sitting on the bed, flipping through a magazine. "And?"

Megan tossed the blouse on the floor. "I'm so stupid. No, what's beyond stupid? I got a great verbal score on my SATs. I should know."

Allegra grabbed the blouse and held it to her chest. The buttery yellow shone against her caramel skin. "I love this. You're doing great work."

Megan joined her on the bed and flopped back on the pillow. "Maybe."

"Hey." Her friend poked her in the arm. "What happened to all the excitement? You love design school. You're going to be a great designer and I will be your star model. Let's talk about your collection."

"I'm eighteen and in my first design class. I need to talk about my homework."

"Attack of the Killer Mom?"

"Right to the heart with a quick jab to the creative spirit."

"Want me to call my therapist? I have his home number."

"It's Friday night."

"He's old. Like fifty. What else has he got to do?"

Megan laughed. "I'll be fine."

"Are you sure? Because I can call."

She probably could. Allegra's parents were successful professionals who worried about their only daughter's emotional state. Allegra had been in therapy since she was six. From what Megan could tell, her friend was the most rational, normal, loyal person she knew, but Allegra's parents didn't see it that way.

"I'm beyond fine. I'm in a dimension of goodness that requires me to get up off the bed. We're going to the party."

Allegra groaned and collapsed in a dramatic swoon. Her long, curly hair fell down, covering her face. "No. Please. Anything but that."

"Or we can spend the evening with my mother."

Her friend straightened. "Party it is."

They looked at each other. "We can do this," Megan said.

Allegra nodded. "Oh, sure. I enjoy going places where people will point and stare."

"They don't do that."

Allegra raised her eyebrows. "I've seen them. It's part of my freakishness."

"You're not a freak."

Her friend stood and put her hands on her hips. "Excuse me? How many other girls do you know who are six feet tall and weigh four pounds?"

"You weigh more than that."

But her friend was right -- Allegra was really tall and really thin. And there was something unusual about her face. Huge eyes and wide lips. Cheekbones that seemed on the verge of cutting through skin.

"You have a look," Megan said, meaning it. "One day everyone is going to think you're amazing and want to be just like you."

"Can it be today?"

They'd met in second grade, when Allegra had moved to the neighborhood. She'd been introduced to the class, and a boy had loudly said the new girl was as ugly as Megan and they should sit together. They did, and a friendship had been born. One bound by time and love and exclusion.

"I'll see what I can do," Megan told her. "But we are going to that party."

They'd been invited. At least as much as anyone was ever invited to a big, loud party at the beach. Getting out of the house seemed like the best way to forget how much her mother had hurt her.

Megan felt twisted inside. She knew in her head it was because she'd finished high school and was ready to start college. She was nearly grown up and sometimes, being free and an adult sounded impossibly wonderful. But other times, she wanted to crawl back in bed and hug her teddy bear.

"Come on," she said as much to herself as to Allegra.

She opened her closet and flipped through the clothes Allegra had left behind on her many sleepovers. She paused at a short red skirt, then tossed it over her shoulder.

"That," she announced. "With the tank top you have on."

"I'll be naked."

"You'll be sexy."

"I'll trip and everyone will see my panties."

"Walk slowly and make sure your underwear doesn't have holes."

Megan pulled out the dress she'd finished over the weekend. The sateen cotton had a sheen that made the really dark green look almost black, but when it caught the light, it flashed with color. The dress was simple and fitted, with skinny straps, but the last six inches of the skirt had a really tight pleating that had nearly killed her to get right. It had come out perfect.

"That's so hot," Allegra breathed. "Can you make me one like it?"

Megan flushed with pleasure. "Sure. We'll go buy fabric tomorrow."

They dressed, then tried to decide on makeup. A lot? A little? It was hard to know what to do. Megan made it a point never to listen when her mother tried to teach her.

"Mascara," Allegra said finally. "And lip gloss."

"Right. We'll be fabulous."

Her bedroom door burst open and her baby sister strolled in. "Mom's sick," Leanne announced, plopping on the bed.

"Get out, rodent," Megan told her.

Sunset Bay: A nice story.

It's all about love and family interrelationships. There are some difficult feelings within a couple of families. Teenage love is split apart by domineering parents but ten years later the teens are adults and get together by a chance meeting in Las Vegas. The conflicts within the family and with others make the sorry interesting. I liked the book.

Susan Mallery's latest book, Sunset Bay, left a lot to be desired. If the ending hadn't been so HEA I wouldn't even say it was a romance. The beginning starts out in a flashback where we meet Megan, Travis, Leanne, the parents, and Allegra.

I felt very disconnected from Travis (being a "white knight" doesn't automatically account for believability, especially as he's 29...grow up), and while Megan had emotional overload going on, I just couldn't see the love. Her constant perfect life overload got old fast. Allegra wasn't really needed for the story acting more of a sidekick that could justify someone pleading with Megan to give a relationship with Leanne a shot than a lifelong best friend. The parents are nightmares wallowing in selfishness and completely one dimensional.

The one character I actually liked was Leanne, the snotty beloved brat from the flashback. But at present day, she's a struggling actress making poor decisions, who suddenly is sympathetic. Leanne's first scene as an adult was awful, and IMO didn't justify anything other than a pathetic rant to her future love interest. And Leanne's "romance" with was unbelievable, rushed and ridiculous. Adding to the confusion is that in the 10 year flashback Leanne is 13, but in the present an adult at 25. WTH?

After the great Marcelli trilogy (I don't count Marcelli Princess as that was a huge pile of crap) to this...what a come down. I've loved Mallery's stories since the mid 90's, and in these last few years the quality has drastically nosedived. This was more a depressing chick lit that a romance. Instead of buying this book, go out and find a copy of Prince Charming, MD which is very similar to this book (without all the drama) but better.

When Megan Greene was younger, all she wanted to be was a designer. Able to design and sew garments worthy of runways, Megan's dreams slowly faded over time. Now she is an accountant with a fiancé and a great relationship with her father. Her sister and mother don't cross her mind very much; their relationship with Megan was strained years ago. Megan was never pretty enough for her mother and while her sister never rubbed her nose in the fact that Megan was not loved as much as she, their sisterly bond was strained almost beyond help. When Megan's safe, ie, boring, life unexpectedly falls apart, she returns to her hometown to confront the past. And her past includes Travis, the boyfriend she was never fully able to stop caring about.

Megan and Travis deserve their happy ever after. Despite the fact that years separated them, they still loved each other. Despite the face that seemingly every single person was against their love, they found the time to learn to trust again. Turmoil, gut wrenching heart ache, blatant lies - all of these made each character that much stronger. Throw in humor and sensual love scenes and I was in reader heaven.

Susan Mallery delivers with Sunset Bay. I laughed and got tearful. I smiled and got angry. I loved every single word of this enigmatic and skillfully written romance!
