Vivacious thirty-seven-year-old Anna K. is comfortably married to Alex, an older, prominent businessman from her tight-knit Russian-Jewish immigrant community in Queens. But a longing for freedom is reignited in this bookish, overly romantic, and imperious woman when she meets her cousin Katia Zavurov's boyfriend, an outsider and aspiring young writer on whom she pins her hopes for escape. As they begin a reckless affair, Anna enters into a tailspin that alienates her from her husband, family, and entire world. In nearby Rego Park's Bukharian-Jewish community, twenty-seven-year-old pharmacist Lev Gavrilov harbors two secret passions: French movies and the lovely Katia. Lev's restless longing to test the boundaries of his sheltered life powerfully collides with Anna's. But will Lev's quest result in life's affirmation rather than its destruction? Exploring struggles of identity, fidelity, and community, What Happened to Anna K. is a remarkable retelling of the Anna Karenina story brought vividly to life by an exciting young writer.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, August 2008: With her fresh reinvention of Anna Karenina, Irina Reyn finds her tragic heroine in the Russian-Jewish immigrants of New York's outer boroughs. As in the Tolstoy, an impetuous woman wasting in a sterile marriage succumbs to a destined-for-disaster love affair with a dashing young man, and is bitterly condemned by a society fraught with hypocrisy; like citizens of19th-century Russia, modern-day Bukharians don't take kindly to wifely infidelity. With an ear for witty dialogue and a knack for imagery both sharp and sensuous, Reyn gives a pixel-perfect depiction of Anna's world. Those caught in her undertow are equally multidimensional, most with their own struggles between loyalty to self and longing for community acceptance. Even those who haven't experienced Tolstoy will be rapt. --Mari Malcolm
From Publishers Weekly
Set among early 21st-century Russian Jewish immigrants in New York City, Reyn's debut beautifully adapts Anna Karenina's social melodrama for a decidedly different set of Russians. Anna, 30-something with a string of bad relationships behind her and a restless, literarily inclined soul, is wooed into marriage by the financial stability and social appropriateness of Alex K., an older businessman with roots in her Rego Park, Queens, community. As Anna chafes at her unromantic life, trouble hits in the form of David, the hipster-writer boyfriend of her sweet, naïve cousin, Katia. The furiously flying sparks between Anna and David provide cover as Katia is quietly pursued by Lev, a young Bukharan Jew who, like Anna, is a dreamer whose relationship with the émigré community is fraught. Reyn's Anna is perhaps even harder to sympathize with than Tolstoy's original, but Reyn's sparkling insight into the Russian and Bukharan Jewish communities, and the mesmerizing intensity of her prose, make this debut a worthy remake. Lev's and Anna's divergent trajectories and choices illuminate how perilous the balance between self and society remains. (Aug.)

“Very good,” said the critics, though some showed signs of wariness. Reyn writes beautiful, articulate prose, and every critic enjoyed reading about the world of Russian-Jewish immigrants. The caveats appeared when reviewers compared Reyn’s Anna to the classic model. Nineteenth-century Anna was crushed between the laws of society and her personal desires; today, a passionate affaire du coeur would end in a lazy afternoon jaunt down to divorce court—assuming the lovers in question were married to begin with. Reyn does use the conventions of immigrant culture to throw up cultural hedgerows in Anna’s path, but as the Christian Science Monitor remarked, “There were times while reading What Happened to Anna K. where I wanted to grab Anna by the shoulders and yell, ‘Get a job already!’”

Stunning Modern Re-Telling of Anna Karenina
By E. Rothstein
I am a huge fan of Tolstoy's sweeping saga of unbridled passion gone awry, and I was fascinated to see how Irina Reyn would modernize the story without losing any of its romantic impact. Thankfully, in Reyn's hands, the story of a present-day Anna K.in New York finds new life and astonishing emotional depth. Reyn wisely sets Anna in the vibrant Russian community of Rego Park in New York, and gives the reader an insider's look at this incredible immigrant community. Reyn's Anna is restless, passionate, literarily inclined, and an utter failure at relationships - until she meets Alex K., a successful older businessman whom she marries (to the delight of her mother's Russian yentas). Anna revels in the luxury of fur coats, Henri Bendel perfume, and the penthouse apartment Alex buys for them. But it is not long before Anna's restless nature gets her into trouble... Reyn manages to paint Anna without sympathy and yet we still feel for her when she succumbs to passion, leaving Alex and her son to be with her lover. The ending is every bit as tragic and heartfelt as Tolstoy's version, but all the more chilling because it is possible to imagine the real Anna passing you on her final day in New York. Gorgeously written, humorous, and emotionally mature, "What Happened to Anna K." is a novel not to be missed.

Sadly Dissappointed
By Sparkle
I was so anticipating my journey with Anna K through New York. I approached this piece knowing not to compare it to Tolstoy and it still came up short. I just wasn't lead to care about Anna and the other characters. I wanted to, but these scenarios were happening all over town, with too little emotion.
